Bette Benton
Elizabeth "Bette" Benton, 70, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, in Sioux City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time.
Mrs. Benton was born June 10, 1927, in South Sioux City, the daughter of Paul and Nora (Hanlon) Saltsgiver. She graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1945.
She married Charles Benton on Feb. 12, 1949.
She was employed as manager of Kwik Kafe Vending, retiring in 1989.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Edwin L. Benton of Rockledge, Fla., and Charles A. Benton and his wife, Cynthia of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Lorre and John Buhler of Rapid City, S.D.; a sister and her husband, Pauline and Warren Gentile of Des Moines, Iowa; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Rose Will and Francine Burchetta.
Jeffrey Lane
Jeffrey Jonathan Lane, 17, of Gig Harbor, Wash., died Thursday, Nov. 27, 1997, of brain cancer.
Memorial services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1997, in Gig Harbor. Arrangements were handled by Haven of Rest Funeral Home in Gig Harbor.
Mr. Lane was born on Feb. 7, 1980, in Omaha Neb. He lived in Sioux City with his parents until 1989.
He was an avid golfer with a hole-in-one to his credit. He was captain of his high school basketball team and a member of the National Honor Society.
Survivors include his parents, Robert and Beth Lane; a brother, Christopher Robert Lane, all of Gig Harbor; maternal grandparents, L.A. "Bud" and Ruth Ann Brockman of Fairfield Bay, Ark.; and paternal grandmother, C. Bernice Lane of Sioux City.

Hannah Rose "Thomas' Aldrich
Hannah Rose "Thomas" Aldrich, 19 months, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. R. David Titus officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. James A. Bruch officiating. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, with a wake service at 7 p.m., with the Rev. Titus officiating. The Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in handling arrangements.
Hannah was born May 21, 1996, in Sioux City.
She was a member of the Sisseton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota.
Survivors include her parents, Carleen Thomas and Mario Aldrich; three brothers, Jordan, Mario Jr., and Jeremiah; three sisters, Kara, Alyssa, and Jayde; all of Sioux City; grandparents, Robert and Carmen Wabasha of Sioux City and J.C. Aldrich of Macy, Neb., and Lita Lenering of Walthill, Neb.; and caretakers, Tom and Sonja Wyant and family of Schleswig, Iowa.
Pallbearers will be Devin and Tirell Wabasha.

Orville L. Thompson
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Orville L. "Buzz" Thompson, 67, of Storm Lake died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at his residence after a long illness.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, with the Rev. Clifton Ellerbeck officiating. Burial will be at a later date. The Fratzke Funeral Home of Storm Lake is handling arrangements.
Mr. Thompson was born Sept. 1, 1930, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Leo and Inez (Long) Thompson. He graduated from high school in Iowa Falls, Iowa.
He married Arlene Jean Hackbarth on Aug. 4, 1950, in Iowa Falls.
He was a cattle buyer and was employed for 18 years with Armour and Company and for 22 years at IBP. He retired in 1985.
He was an active member of the United Methodist church, where he served on the finance committee, and Jewel Masonic Lodge 309 of Storm Lake.
He enjoyed traveling and was an accomplished woodworker and furniture maker.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Jane and Kent Hanstein of LeMars, Iowa; a son and his wife, Dr. Thad Thompson and Dr. Marilyn Wiggins of Odebolt, Iowa; two grandchildren, Grant and Elizabeth Hanstein; and a sister, Valdeva Hermann of Viroqua, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial fund has been established.
Maylou Shaeffer
PARKER, S.D. - Maylou Shaeffer, 89, formerly of Parker, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at Good Samaritan Village Nursing Home in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Christina Catholic Church in Parker. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Centerville, S.D. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday at Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. until service time, Monday at the church.
Mrs. Shaeffer was born Sept. 12, 1908, in Charter Oak, Iowa. She was raised in various Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota towns. She graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls. She graduated from nursing school at Moe Hospital in Sioux Falls.
She married James H. Shaeffer, DDS, on Dec. 29, 1929. The couple moved to Conova, S.D., where they both worked at the local hospital. They resided in Montrose before moving to Parker in 1935.
She was employed as a nurse in Parker. She also served as hostess to her husband for the National Wildlife Association. They were honored by the Parker Community Club for their years of service to the community. He died May 26, 1982.
Survivors include two sons, James of Sioux Falls, and John of Flandreau, S.D.; a daughter, JoAnn Fogelman of Orange City, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Arnold Detlefsen
DOW CITY, Iowa - Arnold Detlefsen, 79, of Dow City died Thursday at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City. Burial will be in Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Sunday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.
Lula Lenz
DENISON, Iowa - Lulela (Lula) Marie Karoline Lenz, 97, of Denison died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at the Denison Care Center in Denison.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial will be in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.
Mrs. Lenz was born July 27, 1900, in Nishnabotna Township, Denison, Iowa, the daughter of W.D. and Anna (Lochmiller) Mundt. She was educated at a rural school in Nishnabotna Township.
She married Frank Lenz on Aug. 22, 1918, in Carroll, Iowa. The couple resided on a farm in Paradise Township, Denison, Iowa, farming until retiring in 1944, and moving to Denison. He died in July of 1979.
She was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, their Ladies Aid and served as past president. She was very active in the church Building Committe and was one of the original organizers of the Ladies Aid Smorgasbord.
She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, sewing and socializing in a game of cards.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Lois and Pat Houston of Denison; six grandchildren, Colette Marsh, Barbara Houston Constance, Sally J. Quandt, Timothy J. Houston, Jane Carstensen, and Anne Garreans; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and two sisters-in-law, Lillian Lenz of Seattle, Wash., and Jane Mundt of Denison.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, John Patrick Houston; twin sisters in infancy; and two brothers, Barney and Reiny Mundt.
Edna M. Newell
ANTHON, Iowa - Edna M. Newell, 94, of Anthon died Tuesday at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Anthon. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.
Vernon H. Larson
LAKE VIEW, Iowa - Vernon H. Larson, 70, of Lake View died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View, with the Rev. H. W. Kramer officiating. Burial, with graveside rites by Homer Hall American Legion Post 66 of Charter Oak, Iowa, will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa.
Mr. Larson was born March 30, 1926, at Charter Oak, the son of Harry and Nora (Olson) Larson. He graduated in 1944, from the Charter Oak High School.
He served in the United States Army, farming on his return.
He married Ruth Bielow on March 30, 1948. The couple moved into Charter Oak in 1960, where he was a custodian at the Charter Oak-Ute School until retiring due to ill health.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, V. Mark and Dawn of Kansas City; son-in-law and his wife, James Craig and Georgia Ford of Omaha, Neb.; three grandchildren, James and Anne Ford, and Matt Larson; four sisters, Alice Smithback of Sioux Falls, S.D., Edna (Clifford) Lee of Onawa, Iowa; Alma (Robert) Glau of Denison, and Bernice (Alton) Hennings of Des Moines, Iowa; and brother-in-law, Vernon Bielow of Charter Oak.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela; his parents; a brother, Roy; and two sisters, Elizabeth and Ruth.
Attendants will be George Crouse, Gale Carstens, Larry Carstensen, David Paa, Jerry Meseck, and Blaine Butler.

STORM LAKE, Iowa - Roberto Rosas Garcia, 25, of Storm Lake died Wednesday at Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake after collapsing at a local restaurant.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Ayotlan, Jalisco, Mexico. The Farber & Otteman Funeral Home of Storm Lake is handling arrangements.

BURT, Iowa - Chrystal Kruse, 68, of Burt died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa.

WAYNE, Neb. - Dean Backstrom, 69, of Wayne died Wednesday in rural Wayne.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery in Wakefield, Neb. The Schumacher Funeral Home of Wayne is in charge of the arrangements.
Richard W. Kerr
DENISON, Iowa - Richard W. Kerr, 71, of Denison died Friday at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison. Graveside services and burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minn. There is no visitation.
Edward Foreman
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Edward Harold Foreman, 74, of Orange City, formerly of Sioux Center, Iowa, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, in Akron, Iowa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Tim Ouwinga officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. The Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center is handling arrangements.
Mr. Foreman was born Nov. 18, 1923, in Maurice, Iowa, the son of Michael and Hattie (Reinders) Foreman. He attended school in Seney, Iowa. He served in the United States Navy on the USS Bunker Hill as an Electrician's Mate Third Class. He received a purple heart medal.
He married Adrianna Bouwman on Sept. 24, 1946, in Orange City. The couple lived in Sioux Center for 29 years, during which he worked at the Sioux Center Co-op Gas and Oil.
He was a member of First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, having transferred recently to First Christian Reformed Church.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Mark of Sheldon, Philip and his wife, Maria of Redding, Calif., and Tim and his wife, Kim of Sioux Center; three daughters and their husbands, Naomi and Bob Miller of Crystal Lake, Ill., Rachel and Dr. Lyle Vander Broek of Dubuque, Iowa, and Debra and Verlyn Rozeboom of Sioux Center; 14 grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Betty and Newman De Haas of Maryland; and a brother and his wife, Marvin and Judy of California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jacob and John; and a sister, Marcia Aalbers.
Pallbearers will be Randy Baartman, Bill Leusink, Nathan Vander Broek, Cory Foreman, Matt Vander Broek, and Brian Zwart.

MARCUS, Iowa - Lenora Lunders, 82, of Marcus died Friday at Heartland Care Center in Marcus.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Monday, with a rosary at 3 p.m., and a wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the Earnest and Roethler Funeral Chapel in Marcus.
