Dorothy M. Brown
Dorothy M. Brown, 85, of Sioux City died Sunday at her residence.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Morningside Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Thomas E. Cates
Thomas E. "Tiny" Cates, 72, of Sergeant Bluff died Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Oakland Cemetery at Sac City, Iowa. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Jack Dodds
Jack Dodds, 79, of Sioux City died Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, at the Coun tryside Retirement Home following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Wesley United Methodist Church, with Dr. Charles Klink of ficiating. Burial will be in Memo rial Park Ceme tery, with mili tary rites con ducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1973. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 9 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Mr. Dodds was born Feb. 19, 1917, in Sioux City.

He married Mary Alley on Oct. 16, 1937, in Mills County, Iowa. She died November 1966.

He moved to West Springfield, Penn. in 1952 and returned to Sioux Ci ty in 1988.

He was employed as a foreman at Jensen and Krage Construction Company and then as a construction paving superintendent for S.J. Groves and Son Construction Com pany in West Springfield, retiring in 1985.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infan try Badge and the European Theatre Ribbon with two Bronze Stars. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge.

Mr. Dodds was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, the Loyal Order of Moose, the Veteran of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Survivors include five sons, Ronald and his wife, Mary, of Port smouth, Va., Richard and his wife, Connie, John and his wife, Melinda, and Robert and his wife, Sandi, all of Sioux City, and Raymond E. of Omaha, Neb.; three daughters and their husbands, Deloris and Richard Larson of Moville, Iowa, Julie and Douglas Dunnick of Mexico City, Mexico, and Kathy and Craig Martin of Sioux City; a brother, Richard Steck of Santa Maria, Calif.; two sisters, Marie Whitesell and Lillian Thomas, both of Sioux City; 24 grand children; 41 great-greandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter and two infant sons.

Pallbearers will be Richard E., Chad and Matthew Dodds, Rob and Glen Snyder and Dan Roupe.

Travis J. Frazier Jr.
Travis James Frazier Jr., infant son of Travis J. Frazier Sr. and Gwen G. St. Cyr, was stillborn Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Calvary Cemetery, with the Rev. F. David Titus, pastor of St. Paul's Indian Mission, officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Ring, pastor of Glad Tidings Lighthouse in South Sioux City, officiating, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Survivors include his parents; three brothers, Mel, Doug and Mac; a sister, Kayla; his paternal grandmother, Violet Frazier of South Sioux City; and his maternal grandmother, Rosalie Thomas of Tomah, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Milton Frazier, and his maternal grandfather, Russell St. Cyr.

Pallbearers will be Stan Torrez and Richard Medina.

Lois J. Grammer
Lois Jane Grammer, 90, of Cheyenne, Wyo., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, at Mountain Towers Health Care in Cheyenne.

Private services will be held in Cheyenne. Burial will be in the family plot in Pleasaton, Neb. The body was cremated. Schrader's Funeral Home of Cheyenne is in charge of the arrangements.

Miss Grammer was born May 1, 1906, in Pleasanton, the daughter of Andrew H. and Bertha F. (Valentine) Grammer.

She attended the University of Nebraska and received a masters degree from Northwestern University. She was a music educator at Morningside College in Sioux City for 30 years. She had lived in Sun City, Ariz, and moved to Cheyenne in June 1990.

She was a member of the All Saints of the Desert Episcopal Church in Sun City, St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sioux City, the Sioux City Symphony, the Phi Mu Alpha music honorary, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Eastern Star.

Survivors include two nieces, Shirley E. Flynn and Carol Shafer, and two nephews, Marshall E. Smith and Thomas Grammer.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Smith, and a brother, Charles A. Grammer.

Glen A. Lowe
Glen A. Lowe, 90, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb. 1, 1997, at a Sioux City nursing home following a brief illness.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Eugene Dollar, pastor of Billy Sunday Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memo rial Park Ceme tery. There will be no visitation.

Mr. Lowe was born May 1, 1906, in Somers, Iowa. He graduated from high school in Somers and attended two years at Morningside College. He moved to Sioux City in 1923.

He married Bertha Henryetta Menard in 1928. They were divorced in 1945 and she died in 1962. He married Bertha Richardson in 1952. She died in 1990.

He was employed as a sta tion operator at First Standard, then later with City Service and Gulf. He moved to Tacoma, Wash. in 1982, then returned to Sioux City in the early 1990s.

He was president of the Service Station Operators for many years and president of the Commencement Ter race Care Center in Tacoma, Wash.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Nancy and Donald Thirstrup of Sioux City; two step children in Tacoma; and several nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister.

Nettie M. Miller
Nettie M. Miller, 78, of Vancouver, Wash., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, in Vancouver.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Park Hill Cemetery at Vancouver. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday at the Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home in Vancouver.

Ms. Miller was born May 5, 1918, in Sioux City.

She had been a waitress and nurses aide in Sioux City until 1969. She moved to Vancouver from Sioux City.

Ms. Miller was a member of the Hillcrest Church of Nazarene in Vancouver. She played the piano at the Evergreen Inn for the seniors. She enjoyed sewing and knitting.

Survivors include three brothers, R.E. Colwell, Rex G. Colwell and Roger E. Colwell, all of Vancouver; four sisters, Ruth J. Mitchell, Emma Lou Desy and Kate Britton, all of Vancouver, and Carol L. Miller of Sioux City; her special friend, Ryan Davis of Vancouver; and several nieces and nephews.

Winnie C. Ponce
Winnie Christine (Moore) Ponce, 82, of South Sioux City died Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Bill Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ponce was born Nov. 30, 1914, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Herschel B. and Jennie (Persinger) Strunk.

She was employed as a seamstress and instructor for Singer Sewing Machine Company in Sioux City. She was also was a seamstress at Sportmans before retiring.

She lived in Onawa, Iowa until 1947, when she moved to Sioux City. She moved to South Sioux City in 1956.

She married Carlos Ponce on June 15, 1963, in South Sioux City. He died Oct. 29, 1996, in Omaha, Neb.

Survivors include two grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Benjamin W. Moore; a daughter, Nancy Butts; a brother, George Strunk; a sister, Helen Hogencamp; and a grandson, Randy Butts.

Lowell G. Bockelmann
HORNICK, Iowa - Lowell G. Bockelmann, 34, of rural Hornick died Monday at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Climbing Hill, Iowa. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery at Smithland, Iowa. Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa.

Maybelle Dykstra
ROCK VALLEY, Iowa - Maybelle Dykstra, 90, of Rock Valley died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1997, at Valley Manor in Rock Valley.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Pioneer United Methodist Church in Rock Valley, with the Rev. Ron Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday at the Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley.

Mrs. Dykstra was born Aug. 12, 1906, in Hull, Iowa, the daughter of Dirjk and Bernadina (Willemsen) Oostenink.

She was employed with Van Wyke and Son, D. Kruelen and John Schuurman general merchandise stores in Hull.

She married John Dykstra on Aug. 6, 1933, in Sioux Falls, S.D. The couple lived in Rock Valley, where she was employed at the Rock Valley Sales Barn as a bookkeeper for 17 years. She also worked part time at the Council Oak Store.

Mr. Dykstra died June 6, 1994.

She moved to Valley Manor on Nov. 19, 1993.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, William, Henry, John, Gerrit and Dick Oostenink, and a sister, Mrs. Jake (Minnie) De Boer.

Leona Mae Gotch
ALLEN, Neb. - Leona Mae Gotch, 94, of Allen died Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church in Allen. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Bressler-Humlicek Funeral Home of Wakefield, Neb.

Benita Marquardt
SCHLESWIG, Iowa - Benita Marquardt, 63, of Schleswig died Sunday at her residence.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Burial will be in Morgan Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Richard A. Rasmussen
CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa - Richard Arthur Rasmussen, 73, of Correctionville died Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rock Branch United Methodist Church in Correctionville, with the Rev. Kent Kastler and the Rev. Dee Ann Klapp officiating. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Barker Funeral Home of Correctionville.

Mr. Rasmussen was born Dec. 27, 1923, in Correctionville, the son of the Rev. Arthur and Blanche Esther (Sadler) Rasmussen. He graduated from Ayrshire High School, Ayrshire, Iowa, in 1941 and attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa.

He married Gladys Brody on Jan. 26, 1945, in Storm Lake.

He was employed as a barber in Sioux City and Storm Lake prior to buying a barber shop in Correctionville in 1946. The couple moved to Kansas City, Mo. in 1953, where he was employed at the Maytag Company for 31 years before retiring because of health reasons. The couple returned to Correctionville in 1984.

Survivors include his wife; a brother, Eugene; and many cousins, whom he cared for as his own children.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Darlene Streff
ALTON, Iowa - Mrs. Darlene (Mousel) Streff, 65, of Slayton, Minn., formerly of Alton, died Sunday at Slayton.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Slayton.

Gerrit E. Vermeer
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Gerrit E. Vermeer, 79, of Quincy, Wash., formerly of Sioux Center, died Saturday in Quincy.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Vander Ploeg Chapel of Sioux Center.

Gary W. Wenham
KINGSLEY, Iowa - Gary W. Wenham, 55, of Kingsley died of throat cancer Monday at his residence.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Kingsley. There will be no visitation. Earnest-Dickison-Michaelson Funeral Home of Kingsley is in charge of the arrangements.

Bill Whittington
HAWARDEN, Iowa - Bill Whittington, 67, of Hawarden died Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997, at his residence.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Associated Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Randy Knuth officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home of Hawarden.

Mr. Whittington was born Aug. 21, 1929, in Hawarden, the son of Harley and Grace (Morey) Whittington. He graduated from the Hawarden High School in 1948. He served in Japan with the U.S. Air Force.

He married Edna Vande Hoef in 1951, in Hawarden.

Mr. Whittington was a member of the Eagles, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Associated Church.

Survivors include four sons, Dennis of Hawarden, Dean and his wife, Andrea, of Black Hawk, S.D., David and his wife, Jennifer, of Boise, Idaho, and Drew of Minneapolis, Minn.; his special friend, Nancy Schiefen of Hawarden; a brother, Richard of Cupertino, Calif.; a sister, Edith Pryor of Roseville, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Amy Jo and Lynn, and a sister, Neva.
