Marjorie E. Griffiths, 95, of Sioux City died Saturday, Jan. 11, 1997, at a Sioux City nursing home.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Morningside Presbyterian Church.
Elvira B. Gunsolley
Elvira B. Gunsolley, 89, of South Sioux City died Saturday at a South Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Omaha Valley Cemtery, rural Homer, Neb. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 7:30 to 9 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City.
Lillian A. Hirsch
Lillian A. Hirsch, 90, of South Sioux City died Friday at a South Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Dakota City. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City.
Betty M. Paradine
Betty M. Paradine, 75, of Sioux City died Jan. 29, 1996, at the Hallmark Care Center.
Mrs. Paradine was born Dec. 20, 1921, in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of Roy and Ruth H. (Weldon) Page. She was raised in Sioux City. She was employed at the Arcadia and Paddock restaurants, the Ray-O-Vac Battery Plant, and the Swift and IBP packing houses. She lived in Omaha, Neb., for many years, until returning to Sioux City.
Survivors include two brothers, Weldon and Nelson Preston of Omaha; a daughter, Ruth Stroud of Fort Calhoun, Neb.; two sons, Preston and Vernon; and grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her step-father, Vernon Preston.
Kenneth V. Yeager
Kenneth V. Yeager, 86, of Sioux City died Thursday, Feb. 6, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Ken Peterson of St. James United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Yeager was born Jan. 13, 1911, at Sioux City, to Theodore and Elizabeth (Robinson). He graduating from Sioux City Central High School and was employed as a printer for the Versteegen Co. He married Mary Wiscup in 1943 at Kansas City, Mo.
He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 580, and the American Legion. He had served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a cook and medic.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Robert and Judy of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1990; his parents and two brothers, Harold and Lowell.
Clarence W. Campbell, 76, North Sioux City, died Saturday; Berkemier Funeral Home.
Elmer "Butch" Petersen, 93, Sioux City, died Saturday; Nelson-Berger Morningside Funeral Home.

LeRoy Barner
WAKEFIELD, Neb. - LeRoy Barner, 65, of Wakefield died Friday at Marian Health Center in Sioux City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wakefield. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Wayne, Neb. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Bressler-Humlicek Funeral Home at Wakefield.
William C. Boote
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - William Charles "Bill" Boote, 64, of Orange City died Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Donald De Glopper officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery at Orange City. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 2 to 3:30 p.m., at the VanEtten-Oolman-VanGelder Funeral Home in Orange City.
Mr. Boote was born Oct. 20, 1932, at Midland Park, N.J., to William and Marie (Juffer). He was raised in New Jersey. He attended Northwestern College at Orange City. He married Ann Van Der Wilt on May 29, 1959, at Orange City, where they made their home. After graduating from Northwestern, he became a sixth grade teacher in the Maurice-Orange City Schools. He retired in May of 1994. He also served as Sports Information Director at Northwestern College for 34 years. During summers, he worked for Farm Bureau Insurance as an adjuster for hail damage to crops.
He was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church and was active in the Northwestern College Raider Rooters. He served in the United States Army during and after the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, David and his wife Karmin of Cedar Rapids, Steven of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a daughter and her husband, Debra and Shane Walter of Luverne, Minn.; four grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Donald and Mae Marie of Wichita, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Gladys V. Huebner
AKRON, Iowa - Gladys V. Huebner, 86, of Akron died Saturday at the Akron Care Center, following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Akron. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Helen J. Kovarna
MERRILL, Iowa - Helen J. Kovarna, 83, of rural Merrill died Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital, following a brief illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Allen Call, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial with graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Liberty Township Cemetery, rural Hinton, Iowa. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Kovarna was born April 10, 1913, at Avon, S.D., to August and Minnie (Kocmich) Kloucek. She married George Kovarna on June 24, 1942, at Dakota City. She farmed with him in Plymouth County and also helped on their dairy farm. He died Aug. 22, 1976, at Sioux City.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Richard and JoAnn of Merrill; a stepdaughter, Darlene Kellison of Lemon Grave, Calif.; a sister, Violet Adams of Sioux City; two grandsons, Dick Lee of Sheldon, Scott of Sioux City; four great-grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jamie; her parents; five brothers, Tom, Bill, Frank, Ed and Emil; two sisters, Emma Placek and Florence Heffernan; three stepdaughters, Josephine Ericsson, Gladys Jahn, and Blanche.
Pallbearers include Gary Adams, Robert Kloucek, Larry, Rick, Steve and Randy Kovarna.
Fannie Kuhl
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Fannie Kuhl, 88, of Sioux Center died Saturday at the Sioux Center Community Health Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. Burial will be in the Memory Gardens Cemetery at Sioux Center. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
Albert C. Olson
SENEY, Iowa - Albert C. Olson, 77, of Seney died Friday at his residence, the result of an apparent heart attack.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Seney United Methodist Church. Burial with military rites will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens at Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Helen Rosburg
LE MARS, Iowa - Helen "Nell" Rosburg, 96, of Le Mars died Thursday, Feb. 6, 1997, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Richard Ries officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Sioux City. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Monday, with a rosary by the Altar Society at 4 p.m., and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., all at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mrs. Rosburg was born March 17, 1900, at Struble, Iowa, to William and Mary "Mollie" (Moran) Nicholson. She grew up and was educated in the Struble area. She married Julius Rosburg on June 23, 1918. They farmed near Hinton, Iowa, until 1946, when they moved to Kingsley, Iowa. He died in November of 1995. A few years later, she moved to Le Mars, where she lived for more than 30 years.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
Survivors include eight grandchildren, Jim and his wife Cindy Lage of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Larry and his wife Jeanette Lage of Sloan, Iowa, Mike and his wife Jodi Lage of Evansdale, Iowa, Rick Lage, Maureen and her husband Kenny Timblin, all of Sioux City, Julie and her husband David Colling of Remsen, Iowa, Bill Lage of Missoula, Mont., Tom "T.J." of Le Mars; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Edith McDougall of Le Mars; and a brother, Don Nicholson of Struble.
She was preceded in death by four children, Patricia "Patsy" Lage, Don, Tom, and Jules; six sisters, Jennie Becker, Mollie Keough, Mabel Mueller, Elizabeth and Evelyn Nicholson, Dorothy Bertram; three brothers, William "Buck", Richard "Dick", and Benjamin "Buzz" Nicholson.
Carl J. Tentinger
LE MARS, Iowa - Carl J. Tentinger, 82, formerly of Le Mars, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 1997, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Jerry Cosgrove officiating. Burial, with military rites by the American Legion Wasmar Post 241, will be in Le Mars Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., and a rosary said by the Knights of Columbus at 7:30 p.m., all at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mr. Tentinger was born May 4, 1914, at Le Mars, to John H. and Margaret (Nemmers). He grew up in Le Mars and attended St. Joseph's Catholic Schools. He married Esther A. Ludwig on May 12, 1947, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Oyens and Le Mars area until 1958, when they moved to Le Mars. He worked for many years as a bookkeeper for various Le Mars businesses, most recently with Meis Seed and Feed, until his retirement. His wife died April 2, 1991.
He was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where he was an usher for many years, the Holy Name Society, an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council 1466, and the American Legion Wasmar Post 241. He also served as treasurer of the Gehlen Band Parents Association for many years. He served overseas in the U.S. Army during WWII.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Mary and Dr. Keevin Franzen of Dubuque, Joan and Bruce Larson of Apple Valley, Minn.; two sons and their wives, Dr. John and Cynthia of Killingworth, Conn., Dr. Charles and Ruth of Stevens Point, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Ben, Sarah, and Martha Franzen, Alyssa Larson, Stephen, William, Abigail, and Madeline; a sister, Marie of Le Mars.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be given in his name to the Gehlen Catholic Schools.
Cornelia Van Batavia
HULL, Iowa - Cornelia "Kelly" Van Batavia, 85, of Hull died Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center at Hull.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Reformed Church at Hull, with the Rev. Verlyn Boone officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery at Hull. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today, with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Kraai-Oolman Funeral Home at Hull.
Mrs. Van Batavia, also known as "Kelly", was born Jan. 14, 1912, at Middleburg, Iowa, to Bert and Jenny (Mouw) Leusink. She was raised in the Springfield, S.D., area. She married Cornelius "Case" Van Batavia at Hull. They farmed northeast of Hull until 1984, when they retired into Hull. He died Feb. 7, 1990, at Rock Valley, Iowa. She became a resident of Pleasant Acres in May of 1995.
She was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she had participated in Reformed Church Women's Ministries. She also served as a foster grandparent at Hope Haven in Rock Valley.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Theodora and Dick Schelling of Sioux Center, Iowa, Sharon and Robert Soodsma of Doon, Iowa; a daughter-in-law and her husband, Phyllis and Wally Dahlseng of Lowry, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Gloria Hyronemus, Darwin Schelling, Kurt Van Batavia, Christal Meyer, Cindy Albani, Darren Soodsma and Justin Soodsma; 15 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Margaret Wesselink of Edgerton, Minn., Geneva Vanderwood of Wenatchee, Wash.; and a brother, Gilbert Leusink of Clinton, Wis.
She was preceded in death by a son, Bert; a grandson, Glenn Schelling; a great-great-granddaughter, Whitney Dirks; three sisters, Grace Schryvers, Pauline Risseeuw, and Irene Vande Griend; and two brothers, Morris and Gerrit John Leusink.
Gary Wakehouse
ONAWA, Iowa - Gary Wakehouse, 44, of Onawa died Thursday, Feb. 6, 1997, at Decatur, Neb., the result of an accident.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Steven C. Hetzel officiating. Burial will be in Belvidere Cemetery at Turin, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. by the Rev. Donald R. Ludwick, at the Pearson Funeral Home at Onawa.
Mr. Wakehouse was born July 5, 1952, at Moorhead, Iowa, to Walter and Julia (Rasmussen). He was raised in Pisgah, Iowa, attended school at West Harrison, Iowa, and graduated from West Monona High School in 1971. He married Becky Phipps on July 16, 1976, at Onawa. He was employed at Stangel Brothers Texaco in Onawa for 13 years and at Sorenson Tire Store for the past seven years. He had served on the Onawa Volunteer Fire Department for many years, was involved with Burgess Hospital Ambulance Service, Bobcat Cart Racing, was a flagman at West Monona football games, and umpired softball games.
He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, where he was confirmed in 1966.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Amber; two sons, Jared and Alex, and Dustin Beckman, who lived at their home, all of Onawa; his mother of Onawa; a brother and his wife, Roy and Janet of Onawa; two sisters and their husbands, Sara and Brian Atwell of Little Sioux, Iowa, Becky and David Vaughn of Castana, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Velma M. Welty
MOVILLE, Iowa - Velma M. Welty, 79, of Moville died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1997, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center, the result of a stroke.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, at the Climbing Hill Church of the Nazarine, with the Rev. Peter Kline and the Rev. LeRoy Struble officiating. Burial will be in Westfork Township Cemetery at Climbing Hill. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the McCulloch Funeral Home in Moville.
Mrs. Welty was born Feb. 2, 1918, near Bronson, Iowa, to Axel and Bessie (Day) Wickstrom. She graduated from Bronson High School and married Lyle L. Welty on March 24, 1937, at Sioux City. She lived near Salix, Iowa, in Tacoma, Wash., for a year, then on a farm near Lawton, Iowa. She had currently been living on a farm in the Moville area for the past 48 years. She worked for a short time in Tacoma. She was a housewife and helped with the chores and running the farm for most of her life.
She was a member of the Climbing Hill Church of the Nazarene, a past board member, and a Sunday School teacher for many years.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter and her husband, Karen and Russ Thompson of Lawton; seven grandchildren, Marilyn Howard and Todd of Oklahoma, Kevin of Moville, Scott and Leslie of Sioux City, Amy Thompson of Olathe, Kan., Traci Inman of Seattle; 12 great-grandchildren, Rhianon, Tyler, George, Nikki, Bryttani, Cecli, Krista, Heather, Amanda, Ashley, Amber, and Tabitha; two sisters, Fern and her husband Ed Dunn of Climbing Hill, Charlotte Johnson of Moville; four brothers, Joe and his wife Blanche Wickstrom of Idaho, Leonard and his wife Vera Wickstrom of Paullina, Paul Wickstrom of Kingsley, Iowa, and Glenn Wickstrom of Scottsdale, Ariz.
She was preceded in death be her parents; a son, Lavern; and a brother, Alfred Wickstrom.
