Eugene Bennett
Eugene Bennett, 75, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 13, 1997, at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Frances Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul-Louis Arts officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Larkin Funeral Home.
Mr. Bennett was born Jan. 20, 1922, in Freehold, N.J., the son of Maynard and Maryette (Clayton) Bennett. He graduated from Freehold High School.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1940, as a supply tech with the 224th AAF. He was stationed in Aquadulce, Panama and the Sioux City Air Base. He also served in the Air Force Reserves.
He married Mary Krokowski on Jan. 1, 1945, in Sioux City.
Mr.Bennett was employed as a masonary contractor with Krokowski Masonary, Krokowski and Bennett Masonary established in 1945, and Bennett's Masonary established in 1971. He retired in 1982.
He was a member of St. Frances Catholic Church and the George Nelson Post of the American Legion in Sergeant Bluff.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Raymond of Sioux City and Gary and his wife, Connie, of Muscatine, Iowa; two daughters and their husbands, Linda and Ron McEntaffer and Mary and Kerry Rygh, all of Sioux City; and 10 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Joshua, Douglas, Samuel, Katie and Joshua Bennett, Paul and Dan McEntaffer and Annah and Michael Rygh.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Raymond; two sisters, Marion Pike and Leona Bennett; and a granddaughter, Emily Bennett.
Pallbearers will be Nick, Douglas and Samuel Bennett and Ron, Paul and Daniel McEntaffer.
Catherine E. Berger
Catherine Eileen Berger, 79, of Sioux City died Friday, July 11, 1997, at Indian Hills Care Center following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Cathedral of the Epiphany, with the Rev. Edward Girres officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Berger was born Feb. 4, 1918, in Marcus, Iowa, the daughter of William P. and Anna L. (Ryan) Collins. She graduated from Holy Name School in Marcus in 1935, and taught country school for four years before attending Western Iowa Tech Community College, where she received her LPN degree.
She married Mike F. Berger in 1940, in Marcus. He died in 1986, in Sioux City. She married William Flanagan in 1990, in Sioux City. He died in 1993, in Sioux City.
She was employed as an LPN at the Cherokee Mental Hospital for one and a half years, St. Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City for 10 years, the Spencer, Iowa, hospital for 12 years, and then at St. Luke's Home Health for five years.
She was a member of Cathedral of the Epiphany, the Catholic Daughters of America, the Eagle's Auxiliary 77, the Disabled American Veterans, and the Siouxland Senior Center.
Survivors include three sons, William and his wife, Carol, of Wheaton, Ill., Michael of Lincoln, Neb., and James of Wilmington, N.C.; four daughters, Patricia and her husband, Harlan Witte, of Pender, Neb., Margaret McBride of Denver, Colo., Mary Jo and her husband, Randy Leuenhagen, of Sergeant Bluff, and Michaeleen and her husband, Don Leiting, of Sioux City; and five sisters, Billie and her husband, Herbert Horacek, of Grand Island, Neb., Vi Waggoner of Linn Grove, Iowa, Betty and her husband, Bob Seggerman, and Vonnie and her husband, Percy Means, all of Marcus, and Sister Mary Donard of Dubuque, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Joe; three brothers and two sisters.
Pallbearers will be Bill Barrett, Joel and Marc Berger, Percy Means, Bob Seggerman and Herb Horacek.
Memorials in her name may be directed to Cathedral of the Epiphany Trust Fund.
Charlotte Frazier
Charlotte (Jenkins) Frazier, 68, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 13, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Shelley Aakre, chaplain at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center, officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 9 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Mrs. Frazier was born Oct. 7, 1928, in Le Mars, Iowa. She lived in Le Mars for six years, then moved with her family to Portland, Ore., for three years. She then returned with her family to Sioux City.
She married Paul B. Frazier on Sept. 12, 1955, in Luverne, Minn. He died March 19, 1997, in Sioux City.
She was employed as a nurse's aide for 16 years at St. Vincent's Hospital in Sioux City.
She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the American Legion Auxiliary Duane M. Nelson Post 1981 and was a past member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Chapter 54.
Survivors include two daughters, Janet and her husband, Bob Stears, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Mary Ann Morey of Sioux City; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Leona Strope of Estacada, Ore.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Paul Jr.; a son-in-law, Herbert Morey Jr.; three brothers and a sister.
Lila L. Harward
Lila L. Harward, 69, of Sioux City died Monday at Indian Hills Care Center following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wesley United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. and a prayer service at 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Alverin H. Hauser
Alverin H. Hauser, 74, of Sioux City died Monday, July 14, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Merrill Muller, pastor of Riverside United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Hauser was born July 23, 1922, in Sioux City, the son of Alfred and Lena (Ferdig) Hauser. He attended Sioux City schools.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a bosuns mate during World War II in the European Theater.
He married Patricia Boni on June 16, 1945, in Sioux City. He married Evelyn Eppstein on April 8, 1978, in Sioux City. She died in May 1996.
Mr. Hauser was employed as a service tech at Sears for 31 years.
He was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church, the Church of All Nations, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Iowa, the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 54, the American Legion 64, the United States L.S.T. Association, the L.S.T. Chapter of Iowa, the Triangle Lodge 643, the Sioux City Scottish Rite Bodies, the Sioux City York Rite, the Abu Bekr Hospital Dads, the Mizpah Shrine 13, the Silver Chapter 548, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the High Twelve Founders Club 1.
Survivors include three sons, Danny and his wife, Debra, and Ronnie, all of Sioux City, and Ruben and his wife, Denise, of McCook Lake; three daughters and their husbands, Mary Anne and Richard Towns, Bonnie and Garry Comstock and Patsy and Gary Anderson, all of Sioux City; a stepdaughter and her husband, Jean and Larry Pridie of Sioux City; 15 grandchidlren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two brothers and their wives, Ruben and Bonnie of Iowa City and LeRoy and Kathy of Menahga, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents. a granddaughter and two infant brothers.
Memorials may be directed to the Shrine Hospital Dads.
Elizabeth J. Huot
Elizabeth J. "Betty" Huot, 76, of Sioux City died Sunday at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Augustana Lutheran Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery at Salix, Iowa, at a later date. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Bennie Ivener
Bennie Ivener, 90, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 13, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Congregation Beth Shalom, with spiritual leader James Sherman officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Ivener was born Nov. 10, 1906, in Sioux City, the son of Ike and Mary (Orlikoff) Ivener. He attended public schools and graduated from Nettleton Business College.
He married Lucille Didier.
He was co-owner of the Ivener Packing Company in the 1930s and owned and operated the King of Trails Steak House and Cabins in the 1950s. He was a farmer, a cattle buyer and a businessman.
Mr. Ivener was a member of United Orthodox Synagogue and B'nai B'rith. He enjoyed the outdoors.
Surivors include four sons, Barr, Kent and his wife, Michele, and Kirk and his wife, Rosalie, all of Sioux City, and Lance and his wife, Dorothy, of Omaha, Neb.;a daughter and her husband, Lynne and Ray Buus of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother and his wife, Max and Francys of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister and her husband, Eva and Ben Zollotuchen of Las Vegas, Nev.; 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Alex, Archie and Tom; and a sister, Goldie Kipperman.
Memorials have been established for the Jewish Federation.
Shirley M. Jacobson
Shirley M. (Tainter) Jacobson, 73, of Arlington, Texas, formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday in Arlington.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Private family burial services will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Vincent H. Wilson
Vincent H. Wilson, 66, of Leavenworth, Kan., died Saturday at Cushing Memorial Hospital in Leavenworth.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the at the Davis Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth. Burial will be in Leavenworth National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
Keith B. Weaver, 85, of Sioux City died Monday; Larkin Northside Funeral Chapel.
Armella M. Bloomquist
RANDOLPH, Neb. - Armella Marie Bloomquist, 67, of Randolph died Saturday at her residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Frances Catholic Church in Randolph. Burial will be in St. Frances Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with a rosary conducted by the Christian Mothers at 3 p.m., at the Johnson Funeral Home in Randolph. There will be a parish rosary at 7:30 p.m. today at the church.
Herbert C. Groon
ALCESTER, S.D. - Herbert C. Groon, 80, of Alcester died Monday, July 14, 1997, at Morningside Manor Nursing Home in Alcester.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church in Alcester, with the Rev. Richard Luttman officiating. Private family burial services will be prior to the memorial service. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Wass Funeral Home in Alcester.
Mr. Groon was born Oct. 11, 1916, near Akron, Iowa, the son of J. Henry and Sophia (Fickbohm) Groon. He attended rural school.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1945 to 1946, where he worked on B-51, B-52 and AT-6 aircrafts.
He married Ardes Ekle on Aug. 23, 1942, in Las Vegas, Nev. In 1947, the couple moved to the Norway Center, S.D., area and farmed until 1971. She died Oct. 29, 1967. He married Velma Fickbohm on Feb. 14, 1971, in Alcester. The couple made their home in Alcester, where he was employed at various jobs including driving a school bus.
He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, where he was an elder and a youth counselor.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Marlene and her husband, Jim Fedderson, of Marshall, Minn., Carol Vojtisek of Wahpeton, N.D., and Joyce (Fickbohm) and her husband, Cal Hubregtse, of Lennox, S.D.; five sons, David Groon of Sioux Falls, S.D., Steve Groon and his wife, Deb, of Volga, S.D., Robert Fickbohm and his wife, Barb, of Fremont, Neb., Delmar "Fudd" Fickbohm of Rapid City, S.D., and Douglas Fickbohm and his wife, Ann, of Yankton, S.D.; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Emil and Irene of Arlington, S.D., and Gerald and Marcella of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and four sisters, Bernice Johnson of Vermillion, S.D., Alvera and her husband, Richard Rosgaard, of Rock Valley, Iowa, and Melvina Aashei and Elaine and her husband, Albert Olson, all of Canton, S.D.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Darlene Klostergaard.
Pallbearers will be Ken Carlson, Art Peterson, Oscar Larson, Charles Hall, Bob Kroell, Morris Sommervold and Elmer and Walt Haltkamp.

Wilson O. Lyons Jr.
MACY, Neb. - Wilson O. Lyons Jr., 50, of Macy died Sunday, July 13, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Alfred W. Gilpin Community Center in Macy, with Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Wolf Jr. in charge. Burial will be in Omaha Indian Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Wilson Lyons Sr. residence in Macy. Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Lyons was born May 3, 1947, in Winnebago, Neb., the son of Wilson and Nellie (Walker) Lyons Sr. He attended Winnebago High School.
He married Maxine Crowe in October 1975, in Dakota City. He was employed as a meat cutter and a custodian at Casino Omaha, until retiring because of poor health.
Survivors include his father of Macy; two stepsons, Laurence Crowe of South Sioux City and Bruce Crowe of Walthill, Neb.; a brother, Donald of Macy; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and a sister, Lucinda Mae Lyons.
Milton T. Macy
VERMILLION, S.D. - Milton Talbott Macy, 95, of Vermillion died of an aortic aneurysm Saturday, July 12, 1997, at the Dakota Medical Center in Vermillion.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Vermillion, with the Rev. Steven Perry officiating. Burial will be in Bluff View Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m., at the Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion.
Mr. Macy was born April 6, 1902, in Mount Vernon, Iowa, the son of William E. and Sarah (Talbott) Macy. He moved to Burbank, S.D. with his family 1910. The family moved near Vermillion in 1915. He attended Burbank, S.D., schools.
He married Francis Wince on Feb. 1, 1922, in Vermillion. She died Oct. 6, 1988.
The couple farmed near Vermillion until 1926. He was then affilated with the Ford Motor Company. He was in partnership with H.A. Benson as Macy-Benson Motor Company from 1938 to 1952. He retired from the Macy Implement dealership in 1969.
He was a member of United Methodist Church, the Incense Masonic Lodge 2, where he was active in degree work. He was presented the State Knight Templar Cross of Honor in 1982. He was a past master of the Incense Lodge, a past high priest of the Vermillion Chapter 2, a past commander of the Vermillion Commandery, a past worthy patron of the Juno Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, a chaplain and past noble grand of the Vermillion IOOF Lodge 3. He was also a member of the Clay County Historical Society and the Vermillion Senior Citzens Center.
Survivors include two sons, Marshall of Phoenix, Ariz., and Delmar of Sterling, Kan.; a daughter, Sara Donna Jensen of Fort Dodge, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gene, and a granddaughter, Linda Macy.
Memorials may be directed to either the Vermillion Senior Citzens Center, the United Methodist Church, the Incense Masonic Lodge or the Historical Society, in care of the Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home.
Clarence M. Remington
RANDOLPH, Neb. - Clarence M. Remington, 75, of Randolph died Saturday at the Osmond General Hospital in Osmond, Neb.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. John's Lutheran Church in Randolph. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery at Norfolk, Neb. Johnson Funeral Home in Randolph is in charge of the arrangements.
Larry Slagter
MARCUS, Iowa - Larry Slagter, 73, of Marcus died Sunday, July 13, 1997, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus, with the Rev. Shelby Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Marcus-Amherst Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the F.I. Goodburn American Legion Post 517. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Earnest and Roethler Funeral Chapel in Marcus.
Mr. Slagter was born Nov. 25, 1923, in rural Marcus, the son of John and Augusta (Lindgren) Slagter. He graduated from Marcus High School in 1943.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946.
He married Elsie Cuthrell on June 24, 1951, in Marcus.
Mr. Slagter was the owner and operator of Larry's Bowling Alley from 1950 to 1965. He was also a painter and was employed with Marcus Oil and the Marcus School District. He retired in 1986.
He was a member of Faith Lutheran church and the F.I. Goodburn American Legion Post 517. He enjoyed bowling and golf.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Trudy Slagter and Neil Gluckman of Fort Collins, Colo., and Valerie Slagter/Eickholt and Richard Eickholt of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Eliot and Rhea Gluckman and David, Spike, Scott and Tammy Eickholt; a brother and his wife, Robert and Jane Slagter of Canoga Park, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph and Arthur; and a sister, Margaret.
Lowal E. Spaulding
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Lowal E. Spaulding, 100, of Storm Lake died Sunday, July 13, 1997, at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with the Rev. David Swinton, pastor at United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. conducted by the Jewell Lodge 309 A.F.&A.M. of Storm Lake, at the funeral home.
Mr. Spaulding was born April 14, 1897, near Cushing, Iowa, the son of James Henry and Laura (Brown) Spaulding. He attended Battle 3 School and graduated from Cushing High School.
He married Florence Elizabeth Neville on Dec. 15, 1922. The couple lived on the Spaulding farm until 1960, when they moved to a farm near Pierson, Iowa. In November 1960, they retired and moved to Storm Lake. She died Aug. 30, 1979. He entered the Methodist Manor in April 1987.
He was a member of the Alpine Masonic Lodge 471 of Holstein, Iowa, the Camara Club, the Chit Chat Club and a card club.
Survivors include his nieces and nephews, Elaine Wimp of Bloomfield, Iowa, Norma Hilker of Texas, Joyce Nolan of California, Charlotte Bengford and Roger and Frank Neville, all of Odebolt, Iowa, and Beverly Kolbe of Sac City, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clifford James and Bruce John.

Colleen Van Engen
SIBLEY, Iowa - Colleen D. Van Engen, 47, of Sibley died Sunday at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Van Engen Acerage in Sibley. Burial will be in Holman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Walton, Roste and Vogel Funeral Home in Sibley.
Mitchel G. Westra
HULL, Iowa - Mitchel Glen Westra, 18, of Hull died Sunday, July 13, 1997, at the Osceloa Community Hospital in Sibley, Iowa, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Ashton, Iowa.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Reformed Church in Hull, with the Rev. Verlyn Boone officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the church. Kraai-Oolman Funeral Home in Hull is in charge of the arrangements.
Mitchel was born March 17, 1979, in Sioux Center, Iowa, the son of Wesley Glen and Brenda Elaine (Vander Veen) Westra. He was raised in Hull. He graduated from Boyden-Hull Community High School in 1997, where he participated in band, jazz band, swing choir, choir, cross country, basketball, track, and baseball. He was a member of the homecoming court and served as prom king.
This summer, he played on an all-star basketball team in Australia. He had planned to attend the University of Sioux Falls. He was employed at B&M Construction and had worked at the Pizza Ranch in Hull.
He was a member of First Reformed Church, where he was active in the Church Youth Fellowship.
Survivors include his parents of Hull; two brothers, Dustin and Nathan, both at home; maternal grandparents, Albert and Sonia Vander Veen of Lynden, Wash.; a great-grandmother, Gertrude Vander Veen of Lynden, Wash.; and his special friend, Kelly Van Veldhuizen of Hull.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Sam P. and Gert Westra.
