Phyllis Bauer
Phyllis (Shupe) Bauer, 54, of Sioux City, formerly of Hornick, Iowa, died Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Eastside Baptist Church in South Sioux City. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Albaton, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Wood Funeral Home in Sloan, Iowa.
Earl S. Beermann
Earl S. Beermann, 81, of rural Dakota City died Tuesday, July 29, 1997, at a South Sioux City nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Salem Lutheran Church in rural Dakota City, with the Rev. Nathan Houfek officiating. Burial will be in Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.
Mr. Beermann was born Oct. 17, 1915, in rural Dakota City, the son of Charles C. and Mary C. (Bobier) Beermann. He married Edith DeVore on March 11, 1939, in Beatrice, Neb. He farmed in the Dakota County area, until retiring in 1978.
He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, where he was recognized as one of the oldest members and a former member of the Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Roger of Dakota City; two daughters and their husbands, Carole and Harold Holmes of Papillion, Neb. and Diane and Larry Schwerin of Harbor Heights, Fla.; a sister, Marjorie Maris of Kerville, Texas; two grandsons, Jim and Bryan Holmes; a great-grandson; and a sister-in-law, Eleanore Beermann of Dakota City.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Loy and Charles; and two sisters, Vera Larson and Ora Morgan.
Pallbearers will be Jim and Bryan Holmes, Rick Claassen, Tom Reed, Dave and Chuck Beermann.
A memorial has been established at Salem Lutheran Church.
Lester W. Burdick
Lester W. Burdick, 89, of Sioux City died Monday, July 28, 1997, at the Countryside Retirement Home following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Alex Washington officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service at 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Burdick was born Dec. 17, 1907, in Sioux City. He attended Sioux City schools. He married Christine Mogensen on Feb. 26, 1938, in Sioux City. She died Aug. 9, 1988.
He was employed by the Sioux City Fire Department from 1940 until serving in World War II. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Wright in the South Pacific during the war. Following his discharge, he returned to the Sioux City Fire Department until retiring in 1970 as an assistant chief.
He was a 46 year member of the Triangle Masonic Lodge 643, where he attained the rank of Senior Warden, and the Retired Fireman's Association.
Survivors include a niece, Judy Crawford; five nephews, Jim Cochran, Bud Burdick, Don, Gene and Richard Mogensen; and several other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
Memorials may be directed to the Siouxland Historical Railroad Association.
Albert L. Gunn
Albert L. "Fuzzy" Gunn, 68, of Hement, Calif., formerly of Sioux City and Dallas, Texas, died of cancer Tuesday at a Hement nursing home.
There will be no services. The body will be cremated. Burial will be at a later date in Logan Park Cemetery in Sioux City.
William G. Harder
William G. Harder, 83, of Sioux City died Wednesday at his residence.
Private family graveside services will be held at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Geneva G. Holmes
Geneva G. Holmes, 82, of Sioux City died Wednesday, July 30, 1997, at a nursing home in Whiting, Iowa.
Private family graveside services will be Saturday in Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Roger D. Graf officiating. Nelson-Berger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Holmes was born Sept. 13, 1914, in Blencoe, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Maude (Stevens) Swesey. She married Oliver W. Holmes on Feb. 27, 1932, in Blencoe. He died Feb. 14, 1985.
She was a member of Morningside Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Sandra and Richard Weaver of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Kimberly Coppey, Scott Weaver and Kathy Davis; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter; two brothers; and four sisters.
Verlie K. Kluender
Verlie K. Kluender, 74, of Sioux City died Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Geraldine M. Mycka
Geraldine M. Mycka, 88, of Sioux City died Monday, July 28, 1997, at the Countryside Retirement Home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. James A. Bruch officiating. The body will be cremated following the service. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a rosary at 4 p.m. conducted by the Catholic Daughters of America and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Mrs. Mycka was born July 23, 1909, in Malvern, Iowa, the daughter of Roy H. and Della G. (Carter) Miller. She came to Sioux City in 1926, from Maryville, Mo. She graduated from Central High School and attended the National Business Training College in Sioux City.
She married Toney F. Mycka on Sept. 11, 1930, in Sioux City. He died Nov. 20, 1981, in Sioux City. The couple were prominent restaurateurs from 1931 to 1968, best known where the Homestead Cafe and Toney's Fine Foods Restaurant.
She was a member of the Cathedral of the Epiphany Church, the Catholic Daughters of America Ava Marie Court 269, the Girls of 68 and a former member of the Sioux City Boat Club. She was a member and volunteer of the Senior Citizen Center, a volunteer for the Democratic Party, and at Marian Health Center.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Robert and Sally of Dakota Dunes and Michael and Marlyce of Des Moines; two daughters and their husbands, Mary Ann and Henry Nasternak of Buffalo, N.Y. and Patricia and William Staempfli of Salem, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Toney F. Jr. and Richard "Dick"; two brothers, William F. and Roy H. Miller Jr.; and a sister, Roberta Conway.
Pallbearers will be Richard, Bob Jr. and Toney Mycka, David Nasternak, William Staempfli, and Craig Miller.
Martha M. Smith
Martha M. (Thompson) Smith, 96, of Sioux City died Wednesday, July 30, 1997, at a Sioux City nursing home following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. David Fechner, pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Smith was born Oct. 29, 1900, in Hoodriver, Ore. She moved to Sioux City in 1918. She was employed as an operator for Bell Telephone in the 1920s. She married Joseph Smith on April 7, 1924, in Elk Point, S.D. He died March 4, 1987.
She was a longtime member of Rebeckah's, where she held the office of treasurer.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Jack and Arleen of Sioux City; a daughter, Doris Johnson of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
Pallbearers will be Bruce Smith, Carl Johnson, Dennis Pick, and Jim Mayo.
Burdell Friedrichsen
DENISON, Iowa - Burdell Friedrichsen, 67, of Denison died Wednesday at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.
Annie Hup
STEEN, Minn. - Annie Hup, 92, of Steen died Wednesday at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, Minn.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Steen Reformed Church. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the fmaily present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Roste Funeral Home in Hills.
M.G. Robeson
MOVILLE, Iowa - M.G. "Trix" Robeson, 84, of Moville died Tuesday, July 29, 1997, at the Indian Hills Care Center in Sioux City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Kingsley, Iowa, with the Rev. John Crosswhite officiating. Burial will be in Kingsley Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. conducted by the Kingsley Cosmos Lodge 470 A.F. & A.M., at the Earnest-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley.
Mr. Robeson was born Oct. 1, 1912, in Washta, Iowa, the son of Ralph and Stella (Anderson) Robeson. He was raised in the Grand Meadow, Iowa area and attended Grand Meadow School.
He married Eileen Turkington on Sept. 23, 1936, in Sioux City. The couple farmed in the Grand Meadow, Kingsley, Marcus, and Pierson, Iowa areas. He then operated the Case Implement Dealership and the rollerskating rink in Kingsley. In 1951, he began farming in near Moville, retiring in 1975. They wintered in Arizona and Texas. He entered the Indian Hills Care Center in February 1996.
He was a member of the Kingsley Cosmos Lodge 470 A.F. & A.M., the Sioux City Consistory, the Abu Bekr Shrine and the Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Pat and his wife Lynnette of Moville and Gary of Sioux Center, Iowa; three granddaughters, Kelly Salker, Heidi and Brandee Robeson; three brothers and their wives Byron and Winifred, Keith and Jan, all of Oregon, and Boyd and Marge of Wichita, Kan.; two sisters, Lola Buss of Phoenix, Ariz. and Lavonne and her husband Howard Sadler of Cherokee, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Leona Robeson.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold.
LaVonne Stevenson
SPENCER, Iowa LaVonne Stevenson, 65, of Spencer died Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Warner Chapel in Spencer. Burial will be in North Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will begin at noon today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Peter Weyer
HAWARDEN, Iowa Peter Weyer, 74, of Hawarden died suddenly Tuesday, July 29, 1997, at his residence.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Byron Shafer officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be Friday, with the family present from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Mr. Weyer was born Feb. 14, 1923, in Weeringerward, Holland, the son of Klaus "Nick" and Maria Johanna (Arends) Weyer. He came to the United States and the Lebanon-Hawarden area with his family in 1927. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Hattie Mae Lambertson on May 7, 1947, in Hawarden. The couple lived in Hawarden, where he was employed at J.C. Penneys and the Council Oak Grocery before becoming a self-emloyed carpenter.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a usher and Deacon for many years.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Nick of Rapid City, S.D. and Jerold of Hawarden; five daughters, Laurene and her husband Alen Brown of Akron, Iowa, Mary Ann and her husband Lee Geveshausen of Beresford, S.D., Carolyn and her husband Don Bertram of Little Rock, Iowa, Beverly Weyer of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Patricia Trevathan of Little Rock; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bernard of Hawarden and Frank of Greenwood, Ark.; and a sister and her husband, Jessie and Lynn Kissinger of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Tim Brown.
James W. Williams
ONAWA, Iowa - James W. Williams, 59, of Onawa died Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday in Onawa City Cemetery. There will be no vistation. Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa is in charge of arrangements.
