Timothy J. Brown
Timothy J. Brown, 36, of Revere, Mass., formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, May 31, 1997, at a Boston, Mass., hospital following a brief illness.
The body was cremated, and services with burial will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery in Sioux City.
Mr. Brown was born August 6, 1960, at Sioux City. He attended Heelan High School in Sioux City. He has lived in the Boston area for about the last six years.
Survivors include three brothers and their wives, Jim and Julie and Bill and Dianne, all of Sioux City, Bob and Marsha of Norfolk, Neb.; two sisters and their husbands, Cathie and Garry Eacker of Scottsdale, Ariz., Susie and Bob Gilbert of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin I. and Geraldine P. (Clark) Brown.
William R. Irwin
William R. Irwin, 80, of Sioux City died Saturday at Holy Spirit Retirement Home following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 9 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Julia L. Jensen
Julia L. Jensen, 89, of Los Gatos, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, at San Jose, Calif., following a lengthy illness.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Graceland Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Paul-Louis Arts of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church officiating. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Jensen was born Jan. 8, 1908, at Clinton, Iowa, to Charles F. and Bertha (Dean) Dyer. She was raised in Clinton and has lived in Minneapolis, Minn.; California; and Sioux City. She married Howard L. Jensen May 12, 1927, at Sioux City.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Betty Dyer of San Jose; nephews and a niece.
She was preceded in death by her husband and three brothers, Thomas, Kenny, and Marvin Dyer.
Arlo Van Buskirk
Arlo B. Van Buskirk, 86, of South Sioux City died Thursday, May 29, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. David Liewer officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery at South Sioux City. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home. Visitation will continue from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday, with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at the church.
Mr. Van Buskirk was born August 12, 1910, at Newcastle, Neb., to Ralph and Ida (Trenn) Van Buskirk. He was a professional boxer in the 1930s. He married Josephine A. Flammang August 16, 1933, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Kingsley, Iowa. The couple moved into Kingsley in 1933, and to South Sioux City in 1952. He had farmed, worked in packing houses, and was a maintenance employee at Gordon Memorial Hospital in Sioux City and St. Michael's School and Church in South Sioux City. He retired in 1972.
He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City, and was an avid bowler.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Lawrence of South Sioux City; seven daughters, Arla Jean Bossow and her fiance K.R. "Tiny" Sexton, Carol and her husband Nick Simon, all of Sioux City, Celene Brooks and her fiance Randy Klein of Dakota City, Mary Jo and her husband Vern Mayberry, Barbara and her husband Corky Zastrow, Joan and her husband Tom Zastrow, and Deanna and her husband Bill Engel Jr., all of South Sioux City; two brothers, Dwain of Whittier, Calif., Ralph of Yakima, Wash.; a sister Viola Nairn of Remsen, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son; a daughter; a brother; and six grandchildren.
Pallbearers include his grandsons, Michael and Travis Van Buskirk, Kevin and James Johnson, Paul Harbaugh, Blake Simon, Bill Hattig, and Ronnie Bobier.
Le Roy "Bud" Carlson, 75, Sioux City, died Saturday; Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.
Steven Ankerstjerne
ONAWA, Iowa - Steven John Ankerstjerne, 43, of Onawa died Thursday, May 29,1997, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Donald R. Ludwick and the Rev. Earle Potts officiating. Burial will be in the Onawa City Cemetery. Visitation, with the family present, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.
Mr. Ankerstjerne was born Nov. 14, 1953, at Onawa to John and Lila (Chapin) Ankerstjerne. He lived in Onawa most of his life, graduating from West Monona High School in 1972. He married Vernice Gloyer of Whiting Oct. 6, 1972. They had two children. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, nature, family and friends. He spent most of his adult life trucking over the road, most recently with Weinrich Trucking of Hinton, Iowa.
He was a founding member of the Tri-River Archery Club, and was affiliated with the First Christian Church in Onawa.
Survivors include his wife of Onawa; a daughter, Charity Marie of Onawa; a son, Travis John of Onawa; his parents of Onawa; his father and mother-in-law, Vernon and Lenora Gloyer of Whiting; two sisters and their husbands, Sandy and David Beechy and Sherri and Doug Johnston, all of Blencoe, Iowa; a brother, Scott of Onawa; his maternal grandmother, Ellen Chapin of Whiting; and a special family friend, Dwight Harms.
He was preceded in death by a daughter; his maternal grandfather, Walter Chapin; and his paternal grandparents, Martin and Chris.
Robert D. Bjerkaas
IRENE, S.D. - Robert Dale Bjerkaas, 58, of Irene died Saturday at his residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Irene. Burial will follow in the Meldal Cemetery, rural Irene. Visitation will be from 3 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Hansen Funeral Home in Irene.
Maynard Dykstra
SHELDON, Iowa - Mr. Maynard Dykstra, 77, of Sheldon died Friday at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon. Burial will follow in East Lawn Cemetery at Sheldon. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Monday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.
Leo J. Hickey
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa - Leo J. Hickey, 74, of Spirit Lake died Thursday, May 29, 1997, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake, with the Rev. James Quitno officiating. Burial will be in South Walnut Cemetery, rural Graettinger, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake.
Mr. Hickey was born Feb. 27, 1923, at Osgood, Iowa, to Michael and Leota (Baker) Hickey. He attended school in Osgood and Emmetsburg, completing his freshman year of high school. In March of 1943, he entered the Armed Forces, serving with the Headquarters Battery 37th Division Artillery in the South Pacific until his discharge in 1945. He married Barbara Stephen Dec. 28, 1946, at Graettinger. The couple farmed in the Graettinger area and then southwest of Estherville, before making their home in Spirit Lake in 1960. In 1961, they moved to their home on Big Spirit where he ran the North Shore Boat Livery for five years. He also worked for Consumers Lumber and for several building contractors before starting his own business. He was a carpenter for 25 years, and more recently did maintenance work at Sunrise Elderly Housing in Spirit Lake for 14 years. The couple had four children, and enjoyed fishing and travel. They wintered in Ft. Meyers, Fla., from 1985 to 1993, until ill health prevented them from doing so.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Leo Joseph Jr. and Mary Jane of Boone, Iowa; a granddaughter, Christine; four sisters, Mary Margaret Lammers of Graettinger, Pearl McDonald of LeRoy, Minn., Jo Flint of Ruthven, Iowa, and Delores Higgins of Seattle, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; a brother; two sons, Ronald Lee and Albert Michael; and a daughter, Rebecca Sue.
Ralph T. Hoogland
IRETON, Iowa - Ralph T. "Bud" Hoogland, 69, of Ireton died Saturday at the Valley Manor Nursing Home in Rock Valley, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ireton. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Ireton. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Ireton.
Cecil R. Hunter
ROSALIE, Neb. - Cecil Robert Hunter, 88, of Rosalie died Friday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Walthill, Neb. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery at Walthill. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Viola M. Kruse
PAULLINA, Iowa - Mrs. Viola Magdalena Kruse, 92, of Paullina died Friday, May 30, 1997, at the Orange City Hospital in Orange City, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Primghar, Iowa, with the Rev. Gerald Zeman and the Rev. Clem Currans officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Primghar. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today, with the family present at 7 p.m., a Scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary, all at the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Paullina.
Mrs. Kruse was born Oct. 27, 1904, at Dubuque, Iowa, to Hubert and Catherine (Koltes) Schueller. She moved to the Primghar area as a small child, receiving her education in Primghar and graduating from Primghar High School in 1922. She then taught country school for six years in Baker Township, O'Brien County, Iowa. She married Otto Kruse Feb. 15, 1928, at Primghar. The couple farmed in the Paullina area for many years until 1959, when they retired and moved into Paullina. He died April 26, 1982, at Cherokee, Iowa. She remained in the family home until moving to Wide View Rest Home in Paullina in September of 1992.
She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Primghar, and the Guild of the church.
Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Mary K. (Burmakow) and Claude Whited Jr. of Marcus, Iowa, Irene and George Schueller of Dubuque, and Leona and Vernon Ricke of Sheldon, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Hibbing of Paullina and Mrs. Orlena Engler of Dubuque; a brother, Herbert Schueller of Primghar; and a sister-in-law, Cecelia Schueller of Dubuque.
She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Gregor Burmakow; two great-grandchldren; and a brother, Loren Schueller.
Elsie Lucht
AKRON, Iowa - Elsie Lucht, 82, of Akron died Saturday at the Akron Care Center following a brief illness.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Union Creek Lutheran Church, rural Akron. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Lela M. Nafe
PIERSON, Iowa - Lela M. Nafe, 84, of Sioux City, formerly of Pierson, died Thursday, May 29, 1997, at Countryside Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Meadow Star United Methodist Church, rural Washta, Iowa, with the Rev. John Battern and the Rev. Martha Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Grand Meadow Cemetery, rural Washta. Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at Earnest-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa.
Mrs. Nafe was born August 28, 1912, at Grand Meadow Township, rural Pierson, to Ellis and Jeanette (Duncanson) Diller. She graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1930. She attended Iowa Falls College for two years, and taught at rural schools for many years. She married Carl Nafe Nov. 21, 1939. He died in 1982. She worked at Pierson School and the Wild Rose Cafe for several years. She also worked at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City for 10 years.
She was a member of the Meadow Star United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Harvey of Houston, Texas; a daughter and her husband, Carol and Harold Schoenherr of Sioux City; a grandson, Dan Schoenherr; a granddaughter, Becky Meyer; a great-grandson; a sister and her husband, Lola and Walter Maas of Norfolk, Neb.; a sister-in-law, Elma Klingensmith of Washta; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis, and a sister, Lula.
Tim Umscheid
GREENVILLE, Iowa - Time Umscheid, 37, of Scenic, S.D., formerly of Greenville, died Thursday at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, S.D.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Warner Chapel in Spencer, Iowa. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery at Greenville. Visitation will begin at noon Monday at the funeral home.
