Paul J. Dugan
Paul J. Dugan, 75, of Sioux City died Sunday at the Casa De Paz.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Berkemier Funeral Home and will resume at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church.

Alice M. Fisher
Alice M. Fisher, 88, of Sergeant Bluff died unexpectedly Sunday, March 16, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Paul Samuelson, pastor of Sergeant Bluff United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Fisher was born Oct. 22, 1908, in Centerville, S.D., the daughter of Swan and Christina (Christensen) Bertelsen. She attended Centerville schools.

She married William B. Fisher on Oct. 10, 1936, in Sioux City. The couple moved to Los Angeles in 1941, where they operated a catering service. They returned to Sergeant Bluff in 1984. Mr. Fisher died Feb. 29, 1992, in California.

She was employed as a clerk with Kresge's and J.C. Penney.

Survivors include a sister, Lillian Kirchman of Sergeant Bluff; a niece and her husband, Jennell and Ron Cook of Sergeant Bluff; and many other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ervin and Harvey; and a sister, Mabel Bertelsen.

Melvina A. Kunkel
Melvina Ann Kunkel, 94, of Sioux City died Sunday, March 16, 1997, at the Matney Westside Manor.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Bruch officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at the Berkemier Funeral Home and will resume at 6:30 p.m., with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church.

Mrs. Kunkel was born March 7, 1903, in Clyde, Kan., the daughter of Felix and Leah (La Jesse) Girard. She moved to Jefferson, S.D. as a child. She attended Jefferson schools. Her family later moved to North Sioux City.

She married Harold Kunkel on April 26, 1941, in Dakota City. The couple made their home in Sioux City. He died Feb. 16, 1985.

She was employed at Armour Packing Company for many years and then at Briar Cliff College until her retirement.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Ladies of La Salette.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Charles and Rose of Sioux City; three brothers, Harvey and his wife, Odella, of Sioux City, Emil of North Sioux City and Isadore and his wife, Bernice, of Akron, Iowa; two sisters and their husbands, Irene and Everett Clay and Beulah and Darrell Brown, all of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ila French, and 12 brothers and sisters.

Marcella K. Michael
Marcella K. Michael, 86, of Sioux City died Sunday, March 16, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael Catholic Church, with the Rev. Lawrence McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Vis-itation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mrs. Michael was born Jan. 8, 1911, in Sibley, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond and Rosa (Gratz) Rowe. She was raised in Sibley and moved to Sioux City in the late 1920s.

She married Charles E. Michael on Sept. 25, 1934, in Sioux City. He died Feb. 9, 1984, in Sioux City.

She was employed at the Bridgeway Cafe, the Restaurant at the Chicago-Northwestern Depot. She owned Marcella's Cafe from 1959 to 1963, then worked for the Silver Steer Cafe until her retirement in 1976.

She was a former member of St. Casimir's Catholic Church and a member of St. Michael Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Gregory and Carmen of Hinton, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Rosella and Ken Zentz of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Bernadine Rowe of Sioux City, Alvera Deloney of Los Angeles, Calif., Delores Rios of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dorothy Jordan of Omaha, Neb.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Vincent and Bud Rowe, and a sister, Martha Gunsolly.

Pallbearers will be William Walker, Gregg, Tom, Craig and Jason Michael, Scott Barto and Mike Muecky.

Vikki Mieras
Vikki Mieras, 47, of Lancaster, Texas, died Monday at her residence.

Texas services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Rhoton Funeral Chapel in Carrollton, Texas. Visitation wil be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Rhoton Funeral Home. Local services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Vincent N. "Vince" Raml, 72, of Sioux City died Sunday; Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Richard V. Tope, 80, of Sioux City died Monday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Bernice J. Belz
HARTLEY, Iowa - Bernice Jeanette Belz, 93, of Hartley died Monday at Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Warner-Baumgarten Funeral Home in Hartley.

J. Ila Bonderson
EMERSON, Neb. - Jeaneva Ila Bonderson, 90, of Emerson died Saturday, March 15, 1997, at the Heritage of Emerson Nursing Home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson, with the Rev. Don A. Wilken officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 3 to 5 p.m., at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Emerson.

Mrs. Bonderson was born Dec. 27, 1906, in Oakland, Neb., the daughter of Swan and Ellen Person. She graduated from Oakland High School in 1925 and received her teaching certificate from Nebraska Wesleyan College in Lincoln, Neb.

She taught at rural Oakland area schools, Emerson town school and later substituted in Sioux City schools.

She married Elmer Bonderson on Aug. 9, 1936, in Oakland. They lived in Sioux City, then moved to rural Emerson in 1951, where they worked on the Bonderson family farm with his brother. The couple retired in 1971 and built a home in Emerson, where they lived until moving into the Heritage of Emerson in 1989. He died in 1990.

She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson, where she was active in the choir and adult church classes and the First Baptist Church in Sioux City.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Dr. Loren and Mahrokh (Targhibi) Bonderson of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Roxana and Parsa.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Eric Roland Person, and a sister, Ellen Fern Miller.

Catherine E. Dineen
JACKSON, Neb. - Catherine E. Dineen, 83, of rural Ponca, Neb., died Sunday at a local nursing home in South Sioux City.

Funeral Mass services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Sioux City. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Larkin Northside Funeral Home. Visitation will resume from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, with a rosary recited by the St. Patrick's Rosary Society at 4 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at the church.

Vera E. Guntren
LE MARS, Iowa - Vera E. Guntren, 96, of Le Mars died Monday at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a rosary said by the St. James Altar Society at 4 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the Feuerstein Funeral Home.

Bud Hanson

CONCORD, Neb. - Bud Hanson, 75, of Concord died Monday at Providence Medical Center in Wayne, Neb.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Concordia Lutheran Church in Concord. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Schumacher Funeral Home in Laurel, Neb.

Edwin J. Matz
HAWARDEN, Iowa - Edwin James Matz, 79, of Hawarden died Sunday, March 16, 1997, at his residence.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden, with the Rev. Karla Kirkeby officiating. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Matz was born Nov. 10, 1917, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Leo and Elenore (Kubiak) Matz. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Brazil.

He married Marie Severson on March 14, 1940, in Chicago. The couple made their home in Dodgeville, Wis.

He farmed and later owned and operated a restaurant. He then was employed as an electrical worker. He moved to Hawarden in May 1994.

Mr. Matz was a member of the Electrical Workers Union.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Ronald and Verna of Sedalia, Mo., and Rodney and Jan of Hawarden; a daughter and her husband, Marilyn and Burnell Oates of Orlando, Fla.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a half brother, Donald, and a half sister, Eileen.

Memorials may be given to Boys Town in Omaha, Neb.

Lillian E. May
SHELDON, Iowa - Lillian E. May, 83, of Sheldon, formerly of Ashton, Iowa, died Sunday at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ashton. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a rosary said by the Catholic Daughters of America at 4 p.m. and a Scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Vander Ploeg Funeral Home of Sheldon is in charge of the arrangements.

Frank J. Prokop
PENDER, Neb. - Frank J. Prokop, 79, of Pender died Sunday, March 16, 1997, at his residence.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's The Baptist Catholic Church in Pender, with the Rev. James Kramper officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Pender. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. and a rosary at 7:30 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus, at the Ben Stalp Funeral Home in West Point, Neb.

Mr. Prokop was born Jan. 11, 1918, in Thurston County in Nebraska, the son of Frank and Frances (Urbanec) Prokop. He was raised in the Pender area and attended District 37 country school and graduated from Pender High School in 1936.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Gladys Abendroth on Dec. 24, 1949, in West Point. The couple farmed near Pender.

Mr. Prokop was a member of the American Legion Post 55 of Pender and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6928 of Pender and was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus of the St. John's The Baptist Council 11810.

Survivors include his wife of Pender; three sons, Kenneth and his wife, Shirley, of Wayne, Neb., Duane and Gary and his wife, Maria, all of Pender; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Ronnie; and four brothers.

Richard D. Shepherd
WASHTA, Iowa - Richard D. Shepherd, 74, of Washta died Friday, March 14, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Barker Funeral Home in Correctionville, Iowa, with the ev. Michael Gruhn officiating. Burial will be in Sunset View Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Ervin Powell Post 283 of Washta. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Shepherd was born Feb. 20, 1923, in Washta, the son of Louis and Esther (England) Shepherd. He graduated from Washta High School in 1942.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942, where he received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1945, where he served for 21 years, retiring in 1964.

He married Ilene Tellman on Dec. 30, 1967, in Sioux City.

He moved to Sioux City and was employed at Younkers from 1964 to 1967, then worked for Wells-Fargo from 1967 to 1974 and Bower Construction from 1974 to 1985. He retired and moved to Washta in 1985.

Survivors include his wife of Washta; a stepson, Bill Tellman II of Sioux City; a stepdaughter and her husband, Julie and Dana Christophersen of Maple Grove, Minn.; and two stepgrandchildren, Dana Henry II and Agena Ilene Christophersen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, Paul Ritts.

Wm. Vincent St. Cyr
WINNEBAGO, Neb. - William Vincent St. Cyr Sr., 66, of Winnebago died Sunday, March 16, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Native American services will be this evening at the Native American Church in Winnebago. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Native American Church Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Winnebago Veterans Association. Visitation will be from today until 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Native American Church, with Mr. Warner Earth officiating.

Mr. St. Cyr Sr. was born June 30, 1930, in Sioux City, the son of Esther B. (Hensley) St. Cyr-John and William Wilbur St. Cyr. He was raised in Winnebago.

In 1950, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Korea. He helped to create the Nebraska Platoon with other Nebraska Veterans. He was discharged in 1952 as a sergeant and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with a bronze star and the United Nations Ribbon.

He married Ida Mae Saunsoci of Macy, Neb. on May 19, 1952. The couple moved to Englewood, Calif.

In 1960, he began his acting career. He returned to Winnebago in 1978, where he was employed as an emergency technician and community health representative from 1980 to 1982. He also kept active with his acting career, doing educational programs for children in Omaha, Neb.

He was a member the Native American Church and the Screen Actors Guild.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Carey and Joni of Fort Smith, Ark., and William Vincent Jr. and Mia of Macy, Neb.; a daughter, Vincellia St. Cyr of Winnebago; four grandchildren; a brother, Matthew H. Pilcher of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Agnes Blackhawk and Yvonne Reinhart, both of Winnebago; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Qui Qui; three brothers, Levi, Wilbur and Roland; and a sister, Karen.

Pallbearers will be Vincent Hunter, Roland and Ronald Warner, Jay Jacobs, Corey Holiday and Robert Armell Jr.

Alma Strunk
IRENE, S.D. - Alma Strunk, 97, of Irene died Sunday at Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Irene.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in rural Irene. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery at Yankton, S.D. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Hansen Funeral Home in Irene.
