Ruth M. Ahrens
Ruth M. Ahrens, 72, of Warsaw, Mo., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, May 5, 1997, at the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton, Mo.
Services were held Friday, May 9, at Faith Lutheran Church in Warsaw. The Rev. Lloyd Helland officiated. Burial was in Shawnee Cemetery at Warsaw.
Mrs. Ahrens was born Nov. 29, 1924, in Sioux City, the daughter of Alfred and Julia (Zamberlan) Carlberg.
She married Julius Ahrens on Nov. 2, 1946, in Sioux City.
The couple made their home in Neligh, Neb., Sergeant Bluff and Newcastle, Neb. They moved to Jefferson, S.D., where she operated Ruth's Cafe for several years. They moved to Warsaw, where she operated a bait shop.
Mr. Ahrens died in August 1986, in Warsaw.
Mrs. Ahrens was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing and fishing.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Robert and Barbara
Hoffman of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., and Michael and Kay Ahrens of Denton, Texas; three daughters and their husbands, Marie and Dr. Dale Andres of Mason City, Iowa, Lou Ann and Ken Skokan of Belgrade, Mont., and Lisa and John Plybon of Warsaw; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, James and Leo Carlberg, both of Sioux City; and four sisters, Anna Carlberg, Mary Davis and Lucia March, all of Sioux City, and Catherine Gerhardt of Papillion, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church in Warsaw.
Duane H. Dybdahl
Duane H. Dybdahl, 70, of Sioux City died Sunday, May 11, 1997, at his residence following a lengthy
illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church, with Dr. Charles Klink officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Monahan Post 64. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., a Masonic service at 7 p.m. followed by a prayer service, at the church. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Dybdahl was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Sioux City, the son of Aage and Anna (Mathwig) Dybdahl. He attended Sioux City schools and Central High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Monterey.
He married Lavonne Merchant on Jan. 9, 1946, in Sheldon, Iowa.
Mr. Dybdahl was employed with the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years, retiring as postmaster in Sutherland, Iowa, in 1982. The couple returned to Sioux City in 1984.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School for many years and served on various committees. He was a member and past master of the Triangle Lodge 643 A.F.&A.M., a past master of Abiff Lodge 347 in Sutherland and a 33rd degree Mason with the Scottish Rite Bodies. He was a member of the High Twelve Club, the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, where he was hospital transportation coordinator for the Shrine Hospitals, and the Shrine Hospital Dad's Unit, a past patron of Azure Charter of the Order of the Eastern Star and of the Sutherland Order of the Eastern Star. He was the honorary ringmaster of the 1997 Shrine Circus.
Mr. Dybdal was a member of the Postal N.A.R.F.E. and N.A.P.U.S., and the Sutherland American Legion Post 0152.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Susan and her husband, Steve Geddes, of Hinton, Iowa, Sandra Ohl and Carol and her husband, Dennis Johannsen, all of Sioux City; eight grandchildren, Carrie (Ohl) Larsen, Corlie and Douglas Ohl, Scott and Sara H. Geddes and Denise, Danielle and David Johannsen; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lloyd "Stanley".
Memorials in his name may be directed to the Abu Bekr Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund or the Wesley United Methodist Church.
Olive Emmert
Olive Emmert, 85, formerly of Sioux City, died Nov. 8, 1996, at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Neb.
Her body was donated to the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines. Burial will be on May 23, 1997, in the Merle Hay Funeral Home and Mausoleum in Des Moines.
Mrs. Emmert was born Aug. 23, 1911, in Broklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Philip and Madge (Christman) Lutz. She moved to Hawarden, Iowa in 1949 and to Sioux City in 1954. She entered the Heritage of Emerson in Emerson, Neb. in 1986.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce S. Parris of Tucson, Ariz.; a son, Robert M. Schoeppler of Las Vegas, Nev.; and two grandsons, Michael and Matthew McKissick.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur M. Lutz, and her husbands, Robert L. Schoeppler and Edison E. Emmert.
Dale C. Eye
SALIX, Iowa - Dale C. Eye, 56, of Salix died Friday, May 9, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, with the Rev. Bruce Lawler, pastor, the Rev. Raymond Wieling and the Rev. Thomas Nash officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Mr. Eye was born July 22, 1940, in Rockford, Ill., the son of Marion and Marian (Weber) Eye. He was raised in Rockford and graduated from West High School.
He married Clara A. Schockey on Oct. 16, 1965, in Rockford. They moved to Sioux City in 1965 and to Salix in August 1969.
He was a carpenter with the Carpenter's Local 948. He farmed in Salix and owned and operated Clara and Dales Bridal Fashion in Sioux City.
He was a member of St Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He played softball and basketball for local and area teams. He was known as an Elvis impersonator and played drums in some local bands.
Survivors include his wife; six daughters, Debra and her husband, Kip Reinbold, Jacquelyn and her husband, Ricky Miller, Michelle Eye and Donna Eye, all of Sioux City, Lesa Eye of Rockford and Christina Eye of Salix; five grandchildren, Dale Clark II and Alexander Eye, Lori Bakker, Amanda Reinbold and Charlie Vasquez; a sister, Beverly Kurlinkus of Milwaukee, Wis.; and four brothers, Ivan and his wife, Martha, of Rockford, Donald of Dallas, Texas, Harold and his wife, Carolyn, of Houston, Texas, and Tommy and his wife, Betty Fitzgerald, of Rockford.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jeanne Marie; twin granddaughters, Patrisia and Vanessa; a brother, Richard; and a sister, Sandra.
Pallbearers will be Larry Marryman, Tim Worrell, John Swift, Angelo James, Leo Cooper, Doug Wiggs and Mark and Dale Clark Eye II.
A memorial has been established in care of the family.
Wayne E. Knight
Wayne E. Knight, 80, of South Sioux City died Sunday, May 11, 1997, at a South Sioux City nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. David Fechner, pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Cowie Church Post 307 of South Sioux City.
Mr. Knight was born Oct. 6, 1916, in Hartley, Iowa, the son of Fred and Ida (Scarborough) Knight. He came to Sioux City with his family as a child.
He married June Stewart on March 10, 1942, in South Sioux City. The couple lived in Sioux City until three years ago, when they moved to South Sioux City.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was employed by Burlington Northern Railroad for 35 years, retiring as a switch foreman in 1976.
Mr. Knight was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and the American Legion Monahan Post 64.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Douglas of South Sioux City and Alan and his wife, Debra, of Sioux City; two sisters, Golda and her husband, Ray Beeman, of Sioux City and Gladys Koon of Covina, Calif.; two grandchildren, Chad and Amanda Knight; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry, and a brother, Willard.
Memorials in his name may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church or the Big Sioux Chapter of the Alzheimers Association.
Kenneth A. Pierson
Kenneth A. Pierson, 80, of Sioux City died Sunday, May 11, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home, with Kathy J. Olson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Pierson was born Oct. 24, 1916, in Moville, Iowa, the son of Calvin E. and Jennie (Smith) Pierson.
He married Viola M. Kellogg on Aug. 2, 1941, in South Sioux City.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 through 1945.
Mr. Pierson was employed by Sioux Transportation Company Inc. for 26 years, retiring as a dock foreman in 1980.
He was of the Methodist faith and ws a member of the Teamsters Union Local 383 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 54.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Kenneth E. and Joanne of Sioux City; two daughters and their husbands, Jeannie and Dave Sears of Sioux City and Chris and Larry Evans of Chicago, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchidlren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Steven; two brothers, Glen and Bill; a granddaughter, Teresa Sears; and an infant grandson.
Pallbearers will be Dave Sears, Doug Olson, John Hooks and Steve, Ron and Randy Pierson.
Lorna Poling
Lorna Poling, 75, of Sioux City died Sunday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Cresent Park United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. and an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m., at the Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Mildred A. Schmidt
Mildred A. Schmidt, 75, of Sioux City died Friday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.
Gerald J. Smit
Gerald J. Smit, 75, of Lee's Summit, Mo., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, May 5, 1997, at the Life Care Center in Overland Park, Kan.
Services were held Saturday, May 10, at Our Lady of Presentation in Lee's Summit. Burial was in Olivet Cemetery. Sheil Colonial Funeral Home in Kansas City, Mo., was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Smit was born Feb. 25, 1922, in Sioux City. He served in the U.S Army. He had lived in Macon, Mo. and moved to the Kansas City, Mo. area in the early 1950s.
He was employed with the Missouri Department of Transportation for 35 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mary M. Smit of Overland Park, Kan.; two sons, Jan of Colfax, Wis., and Steve of Collierville, Tenn.; a sister, Jeanette Smit of Sioux City; and six grandchildren.
Robert Beck
SPENCER, Iowa - Robert Beck, 74, of Spencer died Sunday at the Spencer Municipal Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Mary A. Broderick
WALTHILL, Neb. Mary Alice Broderick, 83, of Encinitas, Calif., formerly of Walthill, died Sunday at Encinitas.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Walthill. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. There will be a rosary at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Munderloh Funeral Home in Walthill is in charge of the arrangements.
Jean Brunsting
BOYDEN, Iowa - Jean Brunsting, 84, of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Boyden, died Monday at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Reformed Church in Boyden. Burial will be in Sheridan Township Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Boyden is in charge of the arrangements.

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa - Louise Agnes Essman, 90, of Rock Rapids died Monday at Lyon Manor Nursing Home in Rock Rapids.

VERMILLION, S.D. - Regina Girard, 76, of Vermillion died Monday at the Dakota Hospital in Vermillion.

HARTLEY, Iowa - Freda Gonnerman, 92, of Hartley died Saturday at the Baum-Harmon Hospital in Primghar, Iowa.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Hartley. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Warner-Baumgarten Funeral Home in Hartley.
Deloris Harlow
WORTHINGTON, Minn. - Deloris Harlow, 76, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Worthington, died Saturday, May 10, 1997, in Mesa following a lengthy illness.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Worthington. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery at Worthington.
Mrs. Harlow married Ivan Harlow in January 1947.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Stephen of Phoenix, Ariz.,and Bob of Tempe, Ariz.; a daughter, Vickie Gronewold of Worthington; a sister, Lois Meins of Mesa; a brother, Fred Nordstrom of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Leona P. Marek
VERMILLION, S.D. - Leona P. Marek, 80, of Vermillion died Monday at the Dakota Care Center in Vermillion.

Susanna M. Mitchell
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Susanna Mathilda Mitchell, 85, of Storm Lake died Sunday at Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery at Alta, Iowa. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Barker Funeral in Alta.
Dr. Hubert Nickolisen
RODNEY, Iowa Dr. Hubert Parker Nickolisen, 75, of Rodney, formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, May 10, 1997, at the Mesa Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz., following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at United Church of Christ in Rodney, with the Rev. Karen Hanke, pastor and the Rev. Gary DeGeest of Chariton, Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in Grant Cemetery. Visitation with the family will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa.
Mr. Nickolisen was born July 29, 1921, near Rodney, the son of Hubert and Anna (Jensen) Nickolisen. He attended school in Rodney and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1938. He received his bachelor degree from the University of Iowa in 1943 and his D.D.S. degree in 1944.
He married Norma M. Niklason on Aug. 25, 1944, in San Diego, Calif.
He served in the U.S Navy Dental Corps. He went on to a residency in Oral Surgury at the University of Iowa hospitals, completing this in 1946. He practiced oral surgery from 1946 to 1984 in Sioux City, retiring to Mesa, Ariz.
He was a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society, the Sioux City Dental Society, the Northwestern District Dental Society and the Iowa Society of Oral Surgury, serving as president of all three associations. He was active with the Midwestern Society of Oral Surgeons, the American Society of Oral Surgeons, and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Society. He was a life member of the Iowa Dental Association and the American Dental Association.
He was affiliated with the Marion Health Center's Department of Surgury and on staff when it was St. Joseph and St. Vincent hospitals. He was also on the honorary staff, Department of Surgery, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center.
He was a charter member of the Sioux City Sertoma Club, the AOPA, the Sioux City Country Club, the Tyrian Lodge 508 A.F.&A.M., and the Abu Bekr Shrine, where he was president of the Sahibs in 1979.
In Arizona, he was a member of the Sunland Village Golf Association and a member of its board of directors. He volunteered as a oral surgeon at St. Vincent's DePaul for the homeless in Phoenix.
He attended First Presbyterian Church in Sioux City and Rodney Church of Christ. He enjoyed the outdoors and flying.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, William B. and his wife, Carol, of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Dr. Robert S. of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; a daughter and her husband, Beth and Carl Domke of Overland Park, Kan.; a sister and her husband, Jane E. and Jim Olson of New Hope, Minn.; and five grandchildren, Todd, Ginger, Trent and Travis Yoder and Chad Nickolisen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

Norbert Ruba
LE MARS, Iowa - Norbert "Nubs" Ruba, 75, of Le Mars died unexpectedly Saturday at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. Burial will be in St. Catherine's Cemetery at Oyens, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Louise Schroeder
WALL LAKE, Iowa - Louise "Lizzie" Schroeder, 101, of Wall Lake died Sunday, May 11, 1997, at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake.
Funeral Mass services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wall Lake, with the Rev. Leo Riesberg officiating. Burial will be in Wall Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary at 8:15 p.m., at the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Wall Lake.
Mrs. Schroeder was born May 3, 1896, near Arcadia, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Caroline (Peters) Aschinger.
She married Frank Schroeder on April 6, 1920, in Arcadia. The couple farmed near Arcadia until 1933, when they moved to a farm near Odebolt, Iowa. Upon retirement, they moved to Wall Lake. He died in June 1993.
She entered Twilight Acres in August 1995. She enjoyed playing cards.
Survivors include four sons, H.F. "Gus" and his wife, Lillian, and Clayton and his wife, Mary, all of Wall Lake, and Darrell and his wife, Thelma, and Norman all of Odebolt; two daughters, Nona Mae O'Connor of Sac City, Iowa, and Marge and her husband, Dale Albrecht, of Wall Lake; 31 grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; 96 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Ardis; two sons-in-law, John J. Heidenreich and Bert O'Connor; a grandchild; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Minnie Schelldorf, Amanda Brockman and Annie Jones; and three brothers, John and Bill Aschinger and Edward Gerstner.
Emma "Tiny" Watson
ONAWA, Iowa - Emma "Tiny" Watson, 99, of Onawa died Sunday at the Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa. Burial will be in Onawa City Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Pearl Wiseman
BROOKINGS, S.D. - Pearl Wiseman, 106, of Sioux City, formerly of Brookings, died Sunday, May 11, 1997, following a brief illness.
Memorial services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Sunrise Manor in Sioux City. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Brookings. Burial will be in Brookings Cemetery.
Mrs. Wiseman was born July 6, 1890, near Sheffield, Iowa, the daughter of George and Lydia Gray. She attended grade school and high school in Sheffield and Benton, Wis. She graduated with a diploma in English from State Normal School in Platteville, Wis., in 1911. She taught school in Praire du Chien, Wis. and Sheffield, Iowa, for several years.
She married Clinton R. Wiseman on March 27, 1916, in Sheffield. The couple moved to Brookings in 1918, where they lived for 58 years, except for one year in St. Paul, Minn. He died in 1976. She became a resident of the Sunrise Manor in September 1976.
She was active in her church, taking part in women's organizations and teaching Sunday School. She was a member of the Brookings Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Gordon and Mavis Wiseman of Lawrence, Kan.; a daughter, Marion Jacobson of Sioux City; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
