Elma May Bass
Elma May Bass, 87, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Friday at her residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Leslie R. Cox
Leslie R. Cox, 74, of Sioux City died Friday at a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m Tuesday at Central Baptist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Shirley E. Daley
Shirley E. Daley, 85, of Sioux City died Friday, May 17, 1997, at her daughter's residence following a brief illness.
Private family services will be at a later date. Becker-Hunt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Daley was born Jan. 7, 1912, at Algona, Iowa, to Myron and Agusta (Lorenz) Hill. She attended St. Lukes Nursing School in Chicago, and graduated when she was 18. She married Robert T. Daley in 1932. The couple lived in Fort Dodge, Iowa; Sioux City; Davenport, Iowa; and San Francisco. He died in June of 1980. She was employed as a registered nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City, St. Joseph Hospital in Davenport, and St. Joseph Hospital in San Francisco. She returned to Sioux City in February of 1997 to live with her daughter.
Survivors include two daughters, Janet Newell of Sioux City, and Linda K. Prozell of San Mateo, Calif.; five grandchildren, James and Robert Newell, Susan Zimmerman, Mike Prozell, and Julie Haymes; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Daryll Hill.
Ruth M. Hauff
Ruth Marian Hauff, 94, of Sioux City died Friday, May 16, 1997, at a local hospital.
A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Merrill City Cemetery, with the Rev. William Steward officating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.
Mrs. Hauff was born May 9, 1903, at Merrill, Iowa, to Jacob and Christina (Schindel) Berner. She graduated from Iowa State University and taught in the Merrill and Cherokee schools. Later she was a full-time mom. She married Dwight Hauff April 25, 1931, at Des Moines, Iowa.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Chi Omega Sorority, Chapter JH P.E.O., and was on the Florence Crittenton Board.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Steven of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a daughter and her husband, Anne and Gary Shaner of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Janet and Ellen Shaner, and Curt and Jerry Hauff.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Urban Berner.
Memorials may be given in her name to P.E.O. Projects @ Family or Grace United Methodist Church.
Gregory J. Madsen
Gregory J. Madsen, 22, of Sioux City died Friday, May 16, 1997, at a local hospital the result of injuries from a construction accident.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel, with Pastor Dan E. Thornton Jr. of Bible Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 9 p.m., at the funeral chapel.
Mr. Madsen was born May 22, 1974, at Sioux City to Paul E. and Mary (Hansen) Madsen. He attended Crescent Park Grade School, Hoover Jr. High School, and West High School. He enjoyed basketball. He was employed as an apprentice plumber with Thornton Plumbing for two years. He married Kristi L. Andersen June 3, 1995, at Sioux City.
He was a member of Bible Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of Sioux City; his parents of Sioux City; two brothers, Grant and Paul Jr., both of Sioux City; and his father and mother-in-law, Ron and Dianne Andersen of Sioux City.
A memorial has been established in his memory.
Eva J. Manning
Eva J. Swanson Manning, 74, of Sioux City, formerly of rural Dakota County, died Friday at a local nursing home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Dakota City. Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present after 7 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.
Donald R. Smith
Donald R. Smith, 79, of Sioux City died Friday, May 16, 1997, at a local hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Whitfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Kretzschmar officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites by Monahan Post 64 of the American Legion, will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Smith was born April 17, 1918, at Salix, Iowa, to Byron and Lillie (Fitzpatrick) Smith. He attended Salix Community Schools. He married Laura N. (Riedesel) Bogue July 13, 1956, at Sioux City. He was a long-time Sioux City resident and worked for Cargill Inc. for 35 years, retiring in 1981. He enjoyed fishing, camping, playing cards, and was an avid walker.
He was a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church, Monahan Post 64 of the American Legion. He was in the U.S. Army during WWII for four years, serving in the European Theater.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, David and his wife Shanon Bogue, and Scott Smith and his fiancee Cindy Hummel, all of Sioux City; two daughters and their husbands, Janice and Rodney Lundy, and Marsha and Marshall Girard, all of Sioux City; a sister, Irene Fader of Abilene, Kan.; nine grandchildren, Clinton, Missi, and Steven Bogue, Cynthia Fuqua, William Cook Jr., Landon-Michael Lundy, Jason Berg, Andrew Smith, and Shyanne Hallmark; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, James and Stephen Bogue; a brother, Claude; and two sisters, Martha Bradley and June Justus.
Richard W. Wise
Richard W. Wise, 71, of Aurora, Ill., formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, May 16, 1997, at Aurora.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Ernest Caltvedt of St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. There will be no local visitation. Christy, Smith & Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Wise was born March 2, 1926, at Sioux City to Elmer and Clara (Irwin) Wise. He was raised in Sioux City and has lived in Aurora for several years. He married Betty Jean (Lewis). He was employed as a silk screenist at Meyercord for 17 years.
He was a member of St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church while in Sioux City. He was also a member of Antique Door Knob Collectors of America.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Bonnie Jean and Thomas Otte of Aurora, and Lisa Ellen and Larry Rybicki of Oswego, Ill.; five grandchildren, Brett, Brian, Carolyn and Rebecca Otte, and Jeremy Rybicki; a brother and his wife, Charley and Evelyn of California; three sisters, Mary and her husband Harold Moberg, Margaret Van Maanen, and Elizabeth Carlson, all of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Eunice and Lois; and two brothers, Robert and Roger.
Dena DeVos
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Dena DeVos, 94, of Sioux Center died Friday at the Sioux Center Community Health Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Covenant Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the Rev. Daniel De Groot officiating. Burial will be in the Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
Josephine C. Harlan
MACY, Neb. - Josephine Cecilia Harlan, 86, of Bosque Farms, N.M., formerly of Macy, died Thursday, May 15, 1997, at her residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Alfred W. Gilpin Community Center in Macy. Burial will be in the Omaha Indian Cemetery at Macy. A wake is being held at the home of Katherine Gilpin in Macy. Native American Church services will be Monday evening at the Omaha Tribal Building in Macy. Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Harlan was born May 30, 1910, at Decatur, Neb., to Samuel Thomas and Louise (Cayou) Gilpin. She married Norman B. Harlan. He died Nov. 8, 1968, at Omaha, Neb. She worked as an aide at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha.
Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie LaZelle Redd of Bosque Farms, and Bernice Harlan Hanley of Tuba City, Ariz.; two sons, Norman B. Jr. of Ignacio, Colo., and Theodore LaZelle of Hominy, Okla.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elsie Gilpin Morris of Walthill, Neb.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Patricia White and one in infancy; seven brothers, Alfred W., Lawrence, Joseph Alan, Samuel Leon, Fred, Francis David and William Valentine Gilpin; and four sisters, Mary Freemont, Adeline Gilpin, Susan Gilpin Grant, and Lucille Gilpin Miller.
Mary A. Leriger
BANCROFT, Neb. - Mary A. Leriger, 93, of Bancroft died Friday at Lincoln General Hospital in Lincoln, Neb.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bancroft. Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery at Bancroft. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at Munderloh Funeral Home in Bancroft. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday at the church.
William Iwen
WEBSTER, S.D. - William Iwen, 90, of Webster, formerly of Battle Creek, Iowa, and Huron, S.D., died Friday at St. Lukes Midland Regional Medical Center in Aberdeen, S.D.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Battle Creek. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home of Battle Creek is in charge of arrangements.
Sharon K. Nelson
JACKSON, Neb. - Sharon K. Nelson, 55, of Jackson died Thursday, May 15, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson, with the Rev. Michael Printy officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Jackson. Visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m. today at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home. The body will then be taken to the church where visitation will continue from 4 to 8:30 p.m., with a rosary at 4 p.m. by the Rosary Society, and a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m., all at the church.
Mrs. Nelson was born March 30, 1942, at Sioux City to Alverno and Ethel (Schroeder) Lanser. She was raised in Allen, Neb., graduated from Allen High School, and moved to Sioux City in 1960, where she lived until 1963. She married Gary R. Nelson August 17, 1963, at Sioux City. The couple moved to rural Jackson. She was employed as an office manager for the State Probation Office in Dakota City, Neb., for 20 years. For many years, she played the church organ at St. John's Church in Willis, Neb., and for St. Patrick's Church in Jackson. She enjoyed camping, collecting antiques, and family.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson, a member of the Church Altar Society, and was a current member of the parish council. She was also a member of the Junior Willis Homemakers Club.
Survivors include her husband of Jackson; two sons, Rick and his wife Sandy of Dakota City, and Robb of Jackson; two daughters, Teresa and her husband Glenn Kasik of Hornick, Iowa, and Tina of South Sioux City; a grandson, Jacob Scott; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers include Lawrence R. Wolf, Darrel Liever, John Kayl, Harlan Stingley, Todd Beacom, and Mike Carlson.
A memorial has been established in her name.
Ryan Willfong
SPENCER, Iowa - Ryan Willfong, 18, of Spencer died Thursday at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery at Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Lois C. Ziegmann
ODEBOLT, Iowa - Lois C. Ziegmann, 70, of Odebolt died Friday, May 16, 1997, at Loring Hospital in Sac City, Iowa, the result of an auto accident.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt. Burial will follow in St. Martin's Catholic Cemetery at Odebolt. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Odebolt. Visitation will also be one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
Mrs. Ziegmann was born Oct. 9, 1926, at Lake View, Iowa, to Harry and Edna (Mauer) Wollesen. She graduated from Odebolt High School in 1944, and married Jack Sommerfeld in 1947. She was employed as city clerk at Odebolt for 20 years. She married Paul D. Ziegmann August 16, 1955, at Carroll, Iowa. She enjoyed sports, gardening, senior citizens events, traveling and working various trade shows with her sons.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt.
Survivors include three sons, Marc and his wife Linda Sommerfeld of Le Mars, Iowa, Craig and his wife Kathie Sommerfeld of Kelly, Iowa, and Neil Ziegmann of Kiron, Iowa; five grandchildren, Tami and Todd Sommerfeld, and Mike, Tina, and Jeff Ziegmann.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her first husband in 1992.
