Jennie E. Blades
Jennie E. Blades, 82, of Sioux City died Thursday at her residence.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Esther J. Gorman
Esther J. Gorman, 91, of Le Mars, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died unexpectedly Tuesday, May 20, 1997, at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Joseph Dillinger officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Ireton, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Gorman was born April 30, 1906, in Maurice, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Matilda (Geuder) Hennrich. She was raised on a farm near Maurice. She received a teaching certificate and taught school in the Maurice area.

She married Glen Keough in April 1932. He died in 1946, in Maurice. She married Francis Gorman in 1948, in Le Mars. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1965. He died in 1978, in Sioux City. She was employed in retail sales while living in Madison, Iowa, Le Mars, and Sioux City. She had lived in Le Mars for the last two and a half years.

She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Thomas and Trudie Keough of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter and her husband, Lynne and Jack Wetzel of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Michael and Theresa Keough, Elizabeth Engle, John Wetzel, Susan Peterson, and John Dallen; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sisters.

Pallbearers will be Jacob, Nicholas, and Jamison Engle, Angela Gray, Lea and Mary Ellen Wolf.

Brownie Green
Brownie Green, 83, of Sioux City died Thursday at her residence.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church. There will be no visitation. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Iva B. Jotzke
Iva B. Jotzke, 91, of Sioux City died Wednesday, May 21, 1997, at her residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Concordia Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Sean M. Smallwood officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Jotzke was born Jan. 19, 1906, in Alexandria, S.D., the daughter of Horace and Flora (Rowe) Carr. She graduated from Allen, Neb. High School.

She married Edward Jotzke in 1940, in Sioux City. He died in 1955, in Sioux City. She was employed by Gordon Memorial Hospital for about 20 years.

She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and the Siouxland Senior Center.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Etta Keil and Agnes Garwood; and five brothers, Everett, Clarence, Joe, Leslie, and Earl.

Hollie M. Knapp
Hollie Marie Knapp, 20, of South Sioux City died Wednesday, May 21, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a heart attack at her residence.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. David Liewer and Rev. Charles Uhlik officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, with a scriptual wake service at 7 p.m., at the church. Becker-Hunt Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Ms. Knapp was born Feb. 8, 1977, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Timothy A. and Jean M. (Showers) Knapp. She moved to South Sioux City in 1980, with her family. She graduated with honors from South Sioux City Community High School in 1995. She was a student at the University of Nebraska, having completed her sophomore year in pre-medicine. She received the Golden Key Outstanding Sophomore Award from the University of Nebraska.

She attended St. Michael Catholic Church. She enjoyed ballet and dance and was a member of the Siouxland Movement Arts from 1983 to 1995. She also enjoyed hockey and golf.

Survivors include her parents; two brothers, Jeff A. and Brian A., both of South Sioux City; her paternal grandparents, Alva and Kate Knapp of Rochester, N.Y.; and her maternal grandparents, Gale and Marie Showers of Atlantic, Iowa.

Pallbearers will be Mark Schmidt, Jack Marshall, Matt, David, and Scott Knapp, and Mark Edris-Knapp.

Theodore Metcalf
Theodore "Ted" Metcalf, 84, of La Porte, Colo., formerly of Sioux City and Hornick, Iowa, died Nov. 19, 1996, at his residence.

Memorial services were held Nov. 21, at First Free Methodist Church in Fort Collins, Colo. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 1997, in Willow Township Cemetery at Holly Springs, Iowa.

Mr. Metcalf was born Oct. 12, 1912, in Holly Springs, the son of Morris and Cleora Metcalf. He was raised in Hornick, Iowa and graduated from Hornick High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Donna L. Sieger on Sept. 5, 1947, in Sioux City. The couple made their home in Sioux City until 1957, when they moved to Colorado. He was employed as a carpenter and contractor with Colorado State University in the Engineering Research Center, until retiring in 1977.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Ginny and Frank of Cortez, Colo.; two grandchildren, Shannon Hutchins and Shane Humphries; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Noe J. Sanchez
Noe J. Sanchez, 63, of Sioux City died Monday, May 19, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Randy Guerdet officiating. Burial will be in Texas at a later date. There will be no visitation.

Mr. Sanchez was born June 2, 1933, in Aransas Pass, Texas, the son of Abraham and Frances (Jimenez) Sanchez. He married Leanna Berryman in 1969, in Tijuana, Mexico.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Terrance of Nashville, Tenn., Christian of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Barry, and Gary, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; three daughters, Maya Sanchez and her husband Jerry of Sioux City, Kathleen Wicliffe and her husband John of Escondito, Calif., and Cynthia Sanchez of The Dells, Ore.; 13 grandchildren; nine sisters, Alma Rojas of Dickinson, Texas, Suzanne Carpentar, Gloria Andeby, Oralia Sanchez, Sarah Roe, Wanda Sanchez, Katie Sanchez, Denise Sanchez, and Cynthia Sanchez, all of Texas; and three brothers, Timothy, Herbert, and Abraham, all of Texas.

Mary J. Tokar
Mary Joyce Tokar, 69, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, May 18, 1997, in Scottsdale.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Paradise Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Scottsdale. Messinger Mortuary and Chapel in Scottsdale is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Tokar was born in Sioux City. She moved to Scottsdale 15 years ago. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and the Friends of the Valley.

Survivors include her husband, Louis J. Tokar of Scottsdale; a daughter, Mary Lou Hess of Tempe, Ariz.; a son, Robert L. of San Diego, Calif.; her father, G. Harold Trafton of Sioux City; and two grandchildren.

Jim D. Petersen, 72, of Sioux City died Thursday; Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Garnet Coil
BATTLE CREEK, Iowa - Garnet Coil, 87, of Vermillion, S.D., formerly of Battle Creek, died Wednesday, May 21, 1997, at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek, with the Rev. Benjamin Ray officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m., at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Battle Creek. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Coil was born Dec. 27, 1909, in Battle Creek, the daughter of Fred and Edna (Deal) Tillotson. She graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1929, then attended Iowa State University.

She married Dwight Coil of Ida Grove, Iowa, in 1932. The couple lived in Ida Grove for five years, before moving to a farm near Battle Creek in 1939. In 1962, the couple moved to a farm near Vermillion, S.D.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Past Matron's Club, and the Ladies Country Club.

Survivors include her husband; five daughters, Connie and her husband Mel Drey of Omaha, Neb., Jeanette and her husband Lloyd Hoppner of Fairbanks, Alaska, Audrey and her husband Bill Namanny of Carroll, Iowa, Linda Larson of Portland, Ore., and Muriel Coil of Flagstaff, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Timothy Drey; and a brother, Lawrence Tillotson.

Mary E. Duncan
DENISON, Iowa - Mary E. Duncan, 87, of Denison died Wednesday at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Burial will be in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a Legion of Mary rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Wayne L. Houchins
MARCUS, Iowa - Wayne La Dean Houchins, 65, of Marcus died Thursday, May 22, 1997, at his residence.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus, with the Rev. Ronald Kramer officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Earnest and Roethler Funeral Chapel in Marcus.

Mr. Houchins was born March 16, 1932, in Ticonic, Iowa, the son of Wayne E. and Opal C. (Lundeen) Houchins. He attended school in Ticonic and graduated from high school in Castana, Iowa. He received his bachlor of science degree from Westmar College, his masters from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo. and his doctorate of psychology from the University of Alabama.

He taught high school at Anthon, Iowa from 1962 to 1968. He taught and was the guidance counselor at Marcus High School. He also taught for 28 years on the college level at Northwest Louisiana State and Southwest Louisiana State. He taught for two years at Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa and one year at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, until retiring and moving to Marcus.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan.

He was an avid bridge player and a member of the LaFayette Louisiana Townhouse Duplicate Bridge Club.

Survivors include his mother of Marcus; a sister, Verdetta Peterson of Marcus; three nieces, Penny Jones, Julie Johannsen, and Vickie Rainboth; and eight grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; and his brother-in-law, Carlyle Peterson.

William Marra
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa - William "Bill" Gerrit Marra, 79, of Rock Rapids died Wednesday, May 21, 1997, at the Lyon Manor Care Center in Rock Rapids.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Rock Rapids, with the Rev. Dennis Nicholson officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.

Mr. Marra was born May 20, 1918, near Hull, Iowa, the son of Teunis and Rena (Dokeson) Marra. He was raised and attended country school near Hull. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Reformed Church in Hull.

He married Anna Bomgaars on June 20, 1940, in Matlock, Iowa. The couple lived in Matlock, Sheldon, Iowa, and Steen, Minn. In 1944, they moved to Rock Rapids. He was employed as a truck driver, retiring in 1988 due to poor health. During his retirement, he worked as a handyman. In Feburary 1996, he entered the Lyon Manor Care Center.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Gerrit and Charlotte of Merrill, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Harriet and Douglas Schemmel of Alvord, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Keith, Kent, Teresa, and Chad Marra, Bradly, Russell, Kurt, and Steven Schemmel, Susan Nagel; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Theodore and Nelvern of Sanborn, Iowa and Clarence and Carol of George, Iowa; two sisters, Dorothy Franken of La Mirarda, Calif. and Irene and her husband Vance Goodfellow of Plymouth, Minn; a sister-in-law, Luella Marra of Wayne, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Wilmar.

Wayne W. Powley
PENDER, Neb. - Wayne Wesley Powley, 69, of Pender died Wednesday at the Pender Community Hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Pender. Burial will be in St. Mark's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Pender.

Ada Schacht
LESTER, Iowa - Ada Belle Schacht, 99, of Garden Grove, Calif., formerly of Lester, died Wednesday, May 21, 1997, at her daughter's residence in Garden Grove.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, Iowa, with the Rev. David Jacob officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery at Lester. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.

Mrs. Schacht was born Feb. 11, 1898, in Lester, the daughter of Joseph and Allie (Hollingsworth) Brucken. She was raised in Lester and attended country school, graduating from Lester Public School.

She married Adolph "Mike" Schacht on March 17, 1915, in Rock Rapids. The couple made their home in Lester. She was a homemaker. He died July 27, 1957. She did sewing and paperhanging. She spent winters in California, until three years ago when she moved to California.

She was a member of Lester Lutheran Church and after it closed, she became a member of Peace Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Hillside Cemetery Circle.

Survivors include a son, Jerry of Rapid City, Iowa; four daughters, Leora Mitchell of Sioux Falls, S.D., Evelyn King of Garden Grove, Alyce Welby of Yankton, S.D., and Corrine Van Fossen of Garden Grove; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Eugene; a grandson, Joey Coakley; two great-grandsons; four brothers; and two sisters.

Nellie Van Oort
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Nellie Van Oort, 93, of Matlock, Hospers, and Sheldon, Iowa, died Tuesday at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 1997, at First Reformed Church in Sheldon. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Vander Ploeg Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
