Ditty Messerlie
Ditty (Swartz) Messerlie, 84, of Dakota City died Thursday, May 29, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Dakota City United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mike Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Mrs. Messerlie was born March 13, 1913, at Madison, Wis., to Edward and Mary (Meyers) Swartz. She married Waldo K. Messerlie Oct. 9, 1937, at Dakota City. He died Dec. 3, 1980, at Yankton, S.D. She was formerly employed at the Dakota City Nursing Home, the Paddock, and retired from the Carousel Restaurant.

She was a memeber of the Dakota City United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ann and her husband John Swick, and Sandra Hulit and her fiance Tom Landers, all of Dakota City, and Jeanette Ramirez of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Walter K. and Wanda of Dakota City; a step-son, Russell of South Sioux City; three sisters, Rose Hogan, Pearl Towne, and Midge Cline, all of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, John Alan Swick, Troy and Tony Swick, Walter Messerlie III, Chad Ramirez, Mike and Bill Hulit, Shawn and Weldon Messerlie, and Frank Barkley.

John E. Mounsey
John E. "Gene" Mounsey, 71, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, May 29, 1997, at his residence.

Services will be Monday at Whitney & Murphy/Arcadia Funeral Home in Phoenix, Ariz. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Veterans Cemetery at Phoenix.

Mr. Mounsey was born May 30, 1925, at Sioux City to Johnny and Emma Mounsey. He married Pauline Rae Anderson in 1958. The couple moved to Phoenix in 1965. He was a retired postal carrier and a retired Navy Chief Quartermaster. He was an avid sports fan and participated in model airplane flying.

Survivors include his wife of Phoenix; two sons and their wives, Steve and Linda of Phoenix, Lee and Teri of Flower Mound, Texas; two daughters and their husbands, Patricia and Major Scott Mounsey-Carpenter of San Antonio, Texas, Jeanne and Jerry Herman of Davenport, Iowa; six grandchildren; a niece and a nephew; and great nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Arlo Van Buskirk
Arlo B. Van Buskirk, 86, of South Sioux City died Thursday at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery at South Sioux City. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home. Visitation will continue from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday, with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at the church.

Steven Ankerstjerne
ONAWA, Iowa - Steven J. Ankerstjerne, 43, of Onawa died Thursday at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Onawa. Burial will be in the Onawa City Cemetery. Visitation, with the family present, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Elmer A. Bentjen
PENDER, Neb. Elmer A. Bentjen, 80, of Pender died Wednesday, May 28, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Walthill, Neb., with the Rev. Clifford Reynolds and the Rev. Walter Behrens officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Pender. Visitation was Friday, at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Walthill.

Mr. Bentjen was born Feb. 9, 1917, in Pender, the son of Charles and Bertha (Winnekamp) Bentjen. He married Harriett Beverly Leinart on Oct. 29, 1939, in Pender. The couple lived in Pender, Elk Point, S.D., California, and West Point, Neb. They then moved to Walthill until 1995, when they moved to Pender. He was employed as a professional spray painter.

He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Pender and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Pender. He enjoyed baseball.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Sandee and her husband Al Mahin, Jamie Bentjen, all of Elk Point, and Bonnie Berg of Winnebago, Neb.; four grandchildren, Scott and Bryan Mahin, Drey Bentjen, and Beth Boyd; a great-grandson; a brother, Melvin of West Point, Neb.; and three sisters, Martha Merry of Thurston, Neb., Ella Smith, and Laura Engelbart, both of West Point.

He was preceded in death by a son, Clark; a brother; and a sister.

Leo J. Hickey
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa - Leo J. Hickey, 74, of Spirit Lake died Thursday at his residence.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. Burial will be in South Walnut Cemetery, rural Graettinger, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake.

Viola M. Kruse
PAULLINA, Iowa - Mrs. Viola M. Kruse, 92, of Paullina died Friday at the Orange City Hospital in Orange City, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Primghar, Iowa. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Primghar. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday, with the family present at 7 p.m., a Scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary, all at the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Paullina.

Lela M. Nafe
PIERSON, Iowa - Lela M. Nafe, 84, of Sioux City, formerly of Pierson, died Thursday at Countryside Retirement Home in Sioux City.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Meadow Star United Methodist Church, rural Washta, Iowa. Burial will be in Grand Meadow Cemetery, rural Washta. Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Earnest-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa.

Oscar Seaton
SPENCER, Iowa - Oscar Seaton, 99, of Spencer died Friday at the St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Warner Chapel in Spencer. Masonic services, by the Evening Shade Lodge 312 A.F. and A.M. of Spencer, will follow. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery at Spencer. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Nolan and Anna Winquist
KIRON, Iowa - Nolan and Anna Winquist, infant twin children of Steven and Jana Winquist of Kiron, died Thursday at the Childrens Hospital in Omaha, Neb., at two days of age.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison. Private burial will be in the Kiron Cemetery at Kiron. There will be no visitation.
