Arnold A. Baron
Arnold A. Baron, 84, of Albuquerque, N.M., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, in Albuquerque.
Memorial services will be at noon Friday, Dec. 5, at Congregation Albert in Albuquerque with Rabbi Joseph Black and Cantor Jaqueline Marx officiating.
Mr. Baron was born Nov. 23, 1913, in Sioux City, the son of Louis and Dora (Ballin) Baron. He was raised in Plankenton, S.D. and Sioux City, where he attended Central High School and Morningside College. He received his B.A. and LLD from the University of Minnesota. He returned to Sioux City, where he practiced law.
He married Sylvia Friedman in 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Senior Lieutenant during World War II. He managed Adel's in Rapid City, S.D. In 1948, he moved to Billings, Mont., where he founded Baron's and became a certified gemologist. He also founded Arnold Baron, Inc., which he moved to Los Angeles, Calif. in 1976. He retired in 1985, and the couple moved to Albuquerque in 1988.
He was a member of Kappa Chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu and the AGS, where he served on their board of directors and board of trustees.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Jaclyn and Judith; a son-in-law, Jeff Schmitt; a granddaughter, Katerine; a sister, Dena Wigodsky of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother-in-law and his wife, Will and Barbara Friedman of Dallas, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be directed to People Living Through Cancer in Albuquerque.
George Baryo
George Baryo, 72, of Sioux City died Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a Trisagion service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Jillian M. Beacom
Jillian M. Beacom, 14, of Sioux City died Monday in Pickstown, S.D.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, with vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Marty M. Buhrman
Marty M. Buhrman, 50, of Sioux City died Sunday, Nov. 23, 1997, in Lincoln, Neb. following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Merrill G. Muller, pastor of Riverside United Methodist Church, officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Private burial will be Saturday at Logan Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Buhrman was born March 1, 1947, in Eugene, Ore., the daughter of Richard M. and Laura R. (Crawford) Gott. She moved with her family to Sioux City as a child. She graduated from Central High School in 1965.
She married Donald F. Buhrman on Dec. 26, 1966, in Sioux City. She was employed as a lunchroom aid at Emerson Elementary School for several years and provided daycare in her home for many years. She enjoyed working on the computer.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Tina Buhrman of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Rick and Ann Gott of Girard, Ohio; a sister and her husband, Laurie and Jose Molina of Sioux City; and two grandchildren, Destiny and Sataya Buhrman.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Rich.
Richard Collingwood
Richard G. Collingwood, 78, of Sioux City died Wednesday at his residence of a sudden illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Riverside United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at Berkemier Funeral Home.
Dorcas E. Haggerty
Dorcas E. Haggerty, 73, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Private services will be held. Cremation will follow the service. There will be no vistation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Haggerty was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Sioux City, the daughter of Elmer and Marjorie (Loring) Jackson. She graduated from Central High School in 1942 and attended the University of Iowa.
She married Russell H. Haggerty on Nov. 26, 1947, in Sioux City. She was employed with Armour Packing Company, Sioux City Credit Bureau, the Sioux City Public School District and the City of Sioux City.
She was of the Methodist faith. She was a member of the P.T.A., 4-H, the Council of Community Services, past president of the Rainbow, the Compassinate Friends and the Easter Seals. She worked with the Polio Foundation and the American Kennel Club. She enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter and her husband, Cynthia and Thomas Karns of Elizabeth, Colo.; and a son and his wife, Jack and Kim of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Leslie A. Haggerty.
Doris O. Jones
Doris O. Jones, 87, of Armour, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, in Armour following a brief illness.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. A.T. Washington officating. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mrs. Jones was born June 29, 1910, in Sloan, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Leota (Thompson) Schultz. She married Delmar W. Jones on March 31, 1950, in South Sioux City. He died Feb. 21, 1985, in Sioux City. She had lived in Sioux City from 1950 to 1988.
Survivors include a son, B.J. Schultz of Wall, S.D.; and a daughter, Ina Kuhlman of Sun City, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by two brothers; five sisters; and a granddaughter.
Helen Olney-Johnson
Helen Olney-Johnson, 85, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with volunteer chaplain Marie Wheeler, of the Cornerstone Faith Center, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home.
Mrs. (Sabasta) Olney-Johnson was born Sept. 25, 1912, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She moved with her family to Sioux City as an infant. She attended school in Sioux City.
She married Sidney R. Olney in 1942. He died in 1962. She married Ronald Johnson in 1979. He died in 1985. She had lived in California and returned to Sioux City in 1980. She was employed as a stock room manager with J.C. Penney Company.
Survivors include a sister, Olga Shpakowsky of Sioux City; two brothers, Tony Sabasta of Carson City, Calif. and Walter Sabasta and his wife Dorthy of Sioux City; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Joe; a sister, Mary; and a daughter, Delores Wood.
Pallbearers will be Steve, Mike and Tim Sabasta and Drennen Bulloch.
Shirley C. Winter
Shirley C. Winter, 78, of South Sioux City died Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Ella T. Zimmer
Ella T. (Houlton) Zimmer, 83, of Sioux City died Tuesday at the Casa de Paz in Sioux City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitaiton will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
James E. Boyer
ELK POINT, S.D. - James E. Boyer, 56, of Elk Point died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Elk Point, with the Rev. Arthur Erickson officiating. Military rites will be conducted following the services. Burial will be at a later date. There will be no visitation.
Mr. Boyer was born Dec. 31, 1940, in Hammon, Okla., the son of Cecil E. and Marjorie L. (Duncan) Boyer. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1987. He received an associate degree in the arts from Pensicola Community College in Pensicola, Fla.
He married Frances Cripe on Dec. 12, 1976, in Corpus Christi, Texas. The couple moved to Elk Point in 1989. He taught applied science and electronics at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City. She died Aug. 10, 1997, in Elk Point.
Survivors include two sons, Joe and Stephan Boyer, both of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Marcia Frederick of San Antonio, Texas and Tamara Palmer of Fort Collins, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Dawn Clarmont of Cheboygan, Mich.; and seven grandchildren.
Peter Duits
ROCK VALLEY, Iowa - Peter Duits, 78, of Rock Valley died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at the McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. following a heart attack that caused a one car accident near Rock Valley.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Reformed Church in Rock Valley, with the Rev. Harlan DeJong officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.
Mr. Duits was born Jan. 24, 1919, in Middleburg, Iowa, the son of Bartholomeus and Johanna (Koerselman) Duits. He graduated from Sioux Center, Iowa, High School in 1938. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945.
He married Jane Eva Wierda on Jan. 1, 1953, in Sioux Center. The couple lived in Hull, Iowa for 1 years, before moving to Rock Valley. He was employed with Iowa Public Service Company, retiring in 1984. She died May 3, 1996.
Survivors include a son, Brian Duits of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Janna and Walt Ross of Mission Viejo, Calif.; two grandchildren, Christopher and Simone Ross; and two sisters, Louise Brieve and Johanna and her husband Claude Dykema, all of Holland, Mich.
He was preceded in death by a son, Randal; three brothers, Dick, Jacob and Bert; and two sisters, Ann Terpstra and Lyde Kalkman.
Esther H. Hansen
PARKER, S.D. - Esther H. Hansen, 96, of Parker died Tuesday at the Hilltop Nursing Home in Parker.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Marion, S.D. Burial will be in Trondhjem Lutheran Cemetery at rural Volin, S.D. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Hansen Funeral home in Irene, S.D.
George J. Hinrichs
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa - George J. Hinrichs, 79, of Rock Rapids died Tuesday at the Extended Care Unit in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids. Burial will be in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Olive V. Slentz
OTO, Iowa - Olive Vivian Slentz, 92, of Oto died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Correctionville, Iowa.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Oto United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Oto City Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, Iowa.
Mrs. Slentz was born April 20, 1905, near Oto, the daughter of John Conrad and Mabel Florence (Moses) Neumayer. She married Roy Earl Slentz on June 18, 1925, in Mapleton, Iowa. The couple lived in the Mapleton, Smithland and Oto areas. He died April 20, 1985.
She was a member of United Church of Christ, where she was active in the Mite Society and taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors, the Oto Birthday Club, past president of the Oto American Legion Auxiliary and the Cemetery Society. She was an accomplished artist and a charter member of the Sioux City Art Center. She enjoyed painting, writing poetry and gardening.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Kenneth Roy and Dorothy of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and Kendell Oliver and Doris of Thomson, Ill.; two daughters and their husbands, Zella Kay and Albert Copley of Mercedes, Texas and Gayla Sue and John Wilson of Anthon; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Opal and Arnold Brandt of Holstein, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three daughters, Karon and Sharon, twin sisters, and La Vonne; a grandson, Alan; three brothers; and four sisters.
John Vust
GEORGE, Iowa - John Vust, 79, of George died Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Tabernacle Baptist Church in George. Burial will be in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present at 7 p.m., at the Bolin Funeral Home in George.
