Margaret Heffernan
Margaret Heffernan, 83, a long time Sioux City civic leader, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas Episcolpal Church, with the Rev. Verdery Kerr officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mrs. Heffernan was born Jan. 23, 1914, in Sioux City, the daughter of Leonard and Lillian Shoemaker. She graduated from Central High School and Briar Cliff College. She taught school in Persia, Iowa and at East High School.
She married Bradford Richard Haakinson who died in an auto accident in 1933. In 1946, she married George Lawrence Avery, president of the Spaulding Avery Lumber Company. He died of cancer in 1960. In 1964, she married Dr. Chauncey Heffernan, a prominent Sioux City physican. He died in 1991.
In 1962, she became the legal guardian of former Iowa 5th District Congressman Fred Grandy, raising him after his parents' died.
She was a member of the Junior League and the Sioux City Country Club. She served on the board of Briar Cliff College. She was chairman of the board for Lehigh Sewer Pipe and Tile in Fort Dodge, Iowa and served as a board member of Spaulding Avery Lumber Company.
She was a respected civic leader in Sioux City and a dedicated patron of the arts. She was associated with the Art Center since its inception in 1938, where she served as a trustee from 1972 to 1982 and became an honorary trustee in 1983. She contributed generously to Briar Cliff College and the Sioux City Art Center.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Sue and Bud Breytspraak of Dallas, Texas and Ann and Henry Royer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three grandchildren, Susan Nelson of Dallas, Texas, Henry Royer of Cooksville, Wis. and Kristin Ulland of Minneapolis, Minn.; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Birdell Kingsbury and Pauline Pelton.
Memorials may be directed to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Briar Cliff College or the Sioux City Art Center.
Gary L. Aesoph
Gary L. Aesoph, 58, of Sioux City died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at his residence following a lenghty illness.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michaels Catholic Church, with the Rev. Lawrence McCarty officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Aesoph was born Nov. 28, 1938, in Faulkton, S.D., the son of Henry and Helen (Sweetland) Aesoph. He graduated from St. Henry High School in Belleville, Ill.
He married Mary Jurgens on June 10, 1967, in Milbank, S.D. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1979. He was employed with Herman M. Brown since 1986.
He was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Kevin and Cheryl of Amarillo, Texas and Jess and Dawn of Albuquerque, N.M.; two daughters, Joellen and her husband Craig Thompson Jr. of Sioux City and Kathleen Aesoph of Vermillion, S.D.; his father and his wife, Henry and Bonnie Aesoph of Milbank, S.D.; five brothers, Dale and Donald, both of Milbank, Jon of Coupeville, Wash., Jim of Watertown, S.D., and Chris of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two sisters, Rheta Kopetsky of Sioux Falls and Jeanne Vogel of Pierre, S.D.; and three grandchildren, Shelby and Dakota Aesoph and Sadie Thompson.
He was preceded in death by his mother and a brother, Thomas.

Naomi L. Ashbury
Naomi L. Ashbury. 81, of Sioux City died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Whitfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Kretzschmar officiating. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery at Allen, Neb. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mrs. Ashbury was born June 2, 1916, in Smithland, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Grace (Rogers) Winterringer. She was raised in Sioux City and graduated from East High School. She married Wesley R. Ashbury on Aug. 15, 1936, in Ponca, Neb. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church and was active in the church.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Janice and her husband Uuno Kanto of Sioux City and Margaret "Peggy" Pearson of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren, David and Michelle Kanto, Perry, William and Theodore Pearson; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother.
Genevieve Christiansen
Genevieve M. Christiansen, 86, lifelong resident of Sioux City, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 1997, in Sioux City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Mayflower United Church of Christ in Sioux City, with the Rev. Elaine Miller officating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Christiansen was born Oct. 2, 1910, in Sioux City, the daughter of Claude and Bessie (Pecaut) Wallen. She graduated from East High School and National Business College.
She married Harvey J. Christiansen on June 2, 1933, in South Sioux City. He died May 10, 1983.
She was employed with Kern Advertising Co., retiring in 1975.
She was a member of Mayflower United Church of Christ, Women's Auxiliary of the Shrine Kanduette, Irena Goodwin Circle and Emanon Bridge Club. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star Azure Chapter 540, president of Oriental Band Ladies, Lady President of Crystal Rhythm Dance Club and an active member of Siouxland Senior Center.
Survivors include a son, Gene R. and his wife Patricia of Arnolds Park, Iowa; three daughters, Kay and her husband, Daryl Gengler of Arnolds Park, Iowa, Virginia Osterholt of Sioux City and Claudia and her husband Paul Baker of Lawrence, Kan.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Janice Iverson of Sioux City; a brother, Jack Wallen of Napa, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Verona Wallen of Sioux City and Helen Hannah of Nevada City; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert C. Wallen.
Rena Friman
Rena Friman, 84, of Sioux City died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Alex Washington officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Friman was born Dec. 8, 1912, in Gas City, Kan., the daughter of George and Bertie (Johnson) Lieske. She moved to Sioux City in 1940. She married Everette Friman in 1952, in Sioux City. The couple owned several taverns in and around Sioux City.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Blanche and Robert Kingsley of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, James and Judi Birkes of Sioux City and Donald and Jeanette Birkes of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Lucile Charlton of Philadelphia, Penn.; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, William Lieske and Wendell Allen; a son, Clyde Birkes; a daughter, Marianne Tieck; and a great-granddaughter.
Robert Harward
Robert "Bob" Harward, 77, of Sioux City died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at an area nursing home following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church, with Dr. Charles Klink officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Harward was born May 19, 1920, in Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS California and was a Pearl Harbor survivor.
He married Lila Boswell on Feb. 27, 1946, in Los Angeles, Calif. She died July 14, 1997, in Sioux City. The couple lived in Sioux City from 1946 to 1967. They resided in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma before returning to Sioux City in 1986. He was employed as a terminal operator with Great Lakes/William Pipeline Company from 1947 until his retirement in 1984.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Connie Harward and husband of Germantown, Md.; two brothers, Ed and Don and his wife Lois, all of Sioux City; two sisters, Alice McMullen of Sioux City and Helen and her husband Bernard Michaelson of Kansas City, Mo.; a brother-in-law and his wife, James and Mary Boswell of Kansas City, Mo.; and three sisters-in-law, Peggy McDowell of Kansas City, Mo., Kay Calas of Carson, Calif. and Edith Harward, formerly of Sioux City, of Omaha, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Pallbearers will be Bob Harward, Danny O'Bryan, Jim Taylor, Gene Sandage, Bernard Michaelson, and Dale "Mick" McCuddin.
Amos R. Hewitt
Amos R. Hewitt, 77, of Sioux City died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. James Pointer, pastor of Sioux City Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Hewitt was born March 13, 1920, in Ocheyedan, Iowa, the son of Walter and Bessie Hewitt. He was raised in Sioux City.
He married Irene Wynn on May 15, 1952, in Elk Point, S.D. She died Jan. 18, 1982, in Sioux City. He was self employed as a commerical hauler for many years and later worked for Soo Tractor Sweeprake Company for five years.
Survivors include two daughters, Gloria and her husband Leon Meyers of Sioux City and Patricia Hewitt of Beaumont, Texas; two sons, Fred and Randy, both of Sioux City; two brothers, Joe of Onawa, Iowa and George of Sioux City; a sister, Darlene Keifer of Onawa; 17 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sons, Sam, Louis and Michael Church; a daughter, Carol Ann Church; and two brothers, Ted "Tick" and Mike Hewitt.
Edward J. Hirsch
Edward J. Hirsch, 75, of rural Dakota City died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at his residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church in rural Dakota City, with the Rev. Nathan Houfek officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.
Mr. Hirsch was born March 24, 1922, in Emerson, Neb., the son of Henry C. and Julia A. (Peters) Hirsch. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Pauline C. Schmit on June 13, 1954, in Emerson. She died July 30, 1996, in Dakota City. He was the owner and operator of Hirsch Awning Company in South Sioux City for 38 years.
He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hirschbach-Watkins Post 10753 of South Sioux City, and the American Legion Harty McNally Post 175 of Jackons, Neb.
Survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Rita and Brock Riley of Dakota City, Jeannie and Jim Mahaney of Hinton, Iowa, Carla and Robert Teager of Blair, Neb., and Cindy and Wayne Berger of Dakota City; a brother, Harold of Sioux City; a sister, Josephine Peterson of South Sioux City; and seven grandchildren, Mike, Brad and Paul Teager, Jason and Jessie Wanderscheid, Jimmy and Justin Mahaney.
Pallbearers will be Charles Young, Charles Rasmussen, Charles Puls, Rick and Steve Hirsch, and Kevin Hansen.
Bernard Sanford
Bernard Sanford, 84, of Sioux City died Saturday at a Sioux City nursing home.
Memorial services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Congregation Beth Shalom. Family burial services will be in Mount Sinai Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Hazel Smith
Hazel G. Smith, 83, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 1997, at a Sioux Falls hospital after a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City with the Rev. Gary Legg and the Rev. Donald Waite officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was born March 11, 1914 in Winnebago, Neb., the daughter of Orville and Gertrude (Ommermann) Shreve. She attended Winnebago and Sioux City schools.
She married Vern B. Smith on Sept. 25, 1929, in Elk Point, S.D. He died Jan. 2, 1993, in Sioux City.
She was a longtime resident of Sioux City before moving to Sioux Falls in 1995. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include three daughters, Marie (Howard) Townsend of Davenport, Iowa, Carol Ann (Bud) Holmes of Sioux Falls and Roberta Stearns of Sioux Falls; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Vern Smith.
Glenn Breiland, 88, of Alpena, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Leighton "Bud" Steckel, 73, of Sioux City died Sunday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Vera Akkerman
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa - Vera Akkerman, 83, of Rock Rapids died Sunday at the Lyon Manor Care Center in Rock Rapids.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Congregational United Church of Christ in Rock Rapids. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.
Marie M. Anderson
WHITING, Iowa - Marie M. Anderson, 83, of Whiting died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at the Pleasant View Care Centre in Whiting.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Church of Christ in Whiting, with Shawn Walden, minister, and Pastor Rusty Hedger officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery, rural Whiting. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa, Iowa.
Mrs. Anderson was born Oct. 5, 1913, in rural Onawa, the daughter of Charles and Eva (Miller) Larson. She graduated from Whiting High School in 1931. She married Howard Anderson on Nov. 19, 1932, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple farmed in the Sloan and Whiting area until his death on Dec. 28, 1982, in Onawa. She enjoyed gardening and canning.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Sally and Jack Valentine of Whiting; a son and his wife, Richard and Karen of Whiting; 11 grandchildren, Steve and Dave Valentine, Cindy Zortman, Lori Cooper, Brenda Abramovich, Robyn Lieber, Renee Butt, Ronda MacClure, Rachel Martin, Rich and Rod Anderson; three sisters, Margie Lee of Sloan, Iowa, Faye and her husband Leon Henkel of Whiting and Jean and her husband Billy Hathaway of Turin, Iowa; three sisters-in-law, Eunice Larson of Onawa, Minnie and her husband Barney Thomas of Des Moines and Dollie Heck of Denver, Colo.; a brother-in-law and his wife, Donnie and Mary of Whiting; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Lucille; and infant brother, Lewis; and a brother, Bud Larson.
James De Ruyter
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - James De Ruyter, 94, of Sioux Center died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the Rev. Brian Steenhoek officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery at 10 a.m. today. Vander Ploeg Funeral Home of Sioux Center is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr De Ruyter was born June 15, 1903, in Sioux Center, the son of Jacob and Altje (Kloek) De Ruyter. He married Jeanette Van Kley on Aug. 20, 1935. She died in 1959. He married Wilma (Van Steenbergen) Vander Ploeg on Aug. 3, 1963. He was a long time merchant in Sioux Center.
He was a member of Central Reformed Church and a former Scout leader. He enjoyed the outdoors and reading.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Carollee and Jim Balloun of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons and their wives, Jim and Carla of Waukesha, Wis. and Larry and Donna of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two stepsons and their wives, Dennis and Luann Vander Ploeg of St. Louis. Mo. and Daryl and Dawn Vander Ploeg of Lake Ozark, Mo.; a stepdaughter and her husband, Judy and Greg Franken of Sun Prarie, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Schutt; three brothers, Le Vinus, George and Arthur James; and three sisters, Mae Balkema, Alice De Ruyter and Martena Gilbert.
Elizabeth Guerttman
SPENCER, Iowa - Elizabeth Guerttman, 97, of Spencer died Saturday at the Spencer Municipal Hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Spencer. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
LeRoy H. Post
FOSTORIA, Iowa - LeRoy Henry Post, 59. of Fostoria died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Burial will be in Baker Township Cemetery at Melvin, Iowa, at a later date. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Sanborn Funeral Home of Sanborn, Iowa.
Mr. Post was born Nov. 3, 1937, near Hartley, Iowa, the son of Gerrit and Kate (Van Ort) Post. He was raised on a farm near Hartley. He attended country school and Hartley High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. Employed as a farmer, he did construction in the western U.S. and was a diver for an oil company in Louisiana.
He married Penelope "Penny" Year on Jan. 25, 1963, in Hartley. The couple farmed near Hartley and Milford. He sold livestock and was the owner of the sale barn at Spencer. He moved to Fostoria 20 years ago. He was employed with the Spencer Brokerage for nine years and Morton Buildings of Spencer.
A member of United Methodist Church, he enjoyed reading.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Peggy Foscaldi of West Hartford, Conn. and Kathryn Rustan of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; two sons, Matthew C. of Excelsior Springs, Mo. and Daniel F. of Fostoria; two brothers and their wives, Harvey J. and Ann of Sanborn and John and Evelyn of Primghar, Iowa; and four sisters and their husbands, Gladys and Conrad Prins, Jeanne and Marvin Olhause, all of Sanborn, Irma and Marvin Jacobsma of Hartley, and Glenda and Dean Schroeder of Pine, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.
Pallbearers will be John Erdman, Ron Kirk, Mike Greene, Frank Krieger, Steve Letcher, and Dan Beddow.
Gerrit J. Schneider
HOSPERS, Iowa - Gerrit John Schneider, 79, of Hospers died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at the University of Nebraska Hospital in Omaha, Neb.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers, with the Rev. Dennis Hietbrink officiating. Burial will be in Newkirk Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the VanEtten-Oolman-VanGelder Funeral Home in Orange City, Iowa.
Mr. Schneider was born June 2, 1918, in Holland, Neb., the son of John and Grace (Helmink) Schneider. He was raised in Nebraska and moved to Boyden, Iowa at the age of 16. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946.
He married Hermina Ruth Hofmeyer on April 4, 1946 in Newkirk. The couple farmed in Boyden and then moved to a farm north of Boyden. In 1954, they began farming near Newkirk. They moved to Hospers in 1982.
He was a member of Newkirk Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory as both elder and deacon, taught Sunday School and sang in the men's choir. He was a member of the church's Men's Brotherhood. He enjoyed fishing and bowling.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Ron and Judy of George, Iowa and John and Lisa of Remsen, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Barb and Gary Van Sloten of Doon, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Sasha Gerken, Jamie, Amber, Tonia, Jonathan, and Nerissa Schneider, Stacia, Ryan, and Cody Van Sloten; a sister, Everdene Doctor of Sheldon, Iowa; and two brothers, Ben of Montevideo, Minn. and Harold and his wife Wilma of Rock Valley, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law, Martin Doctor; and a sister-in-law, Gert Schneider.
Shirley J. Shever
CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa - Shirley Jane Shever, 69, of Cushing, Iowa, formerly of Correctionville, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Correctionville, with the Rev. Consorcia Sanchez and the Rev. Dee Ann Klapp officiating. Burial will be in Correctionville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Barker Funeral Home in Correctionville.
Mrs. Shever was born July 24, 1928, in Correctionville, the daughter of Orville Glen and Irene Fern (Goettsch) Watson. She graduated from Correctionville High School.
She married Robert Gray on Sept. 21, 1946, in Correctionville. He died Feb. 6, 1974. She married Maurice Shever on March 3, 1979 in Las Vegas, Nev. She was employed with the Correctionville News Office for many years.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and enjoyed antiques, crafts and traveling.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Steve Gray and his wife Barb of Moville, Iowa, Mike Gray and his wife Mary and Keith Gray, all of Correctionville; two daughters, Barb and her husband Bernard Katelson of Correctionville and Denice Henderson of Cushing; her mother of Correctionville, a sister and her husband, Ardyth and Robert Heyer of Galva, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father.
