Ex-journalist Goodson dies
Julie F. Goodson
Julie F. Goodson, 70, of Sioux City, a retired journalist and community volunteer, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at her home on Lake West Okoboji of natural causes.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church, with the Rev. Art Bell officiating. Graveside service will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Goodson was born Feb. 3, 1927, in Sioux Falls, the daughter of Herbert and Louise J. (Sammons) Freese.
She moved with her family to Sioux City. She graduated from Central High School in 1945 and received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Rockford College, Rockford, Ill., in 1949. She received a master's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri at Columbia.
She married Raymond J. Goodson on June 3, 1954, in Sioux City.
Mrs. Goodson's family owned the Sioux City Journal for more than 100 years. Her great grandfather, George Perkins, purchased The Journal in 1869, turning it into a daily paper in 1870. She worked at the paper as a reporter and feature writer in the women's department, editorial department, Sunday department and the newsroom.
Her family sold The Journal in 1971. Mrs. Goodson retired from The Journal in 1974. She later was a reporter for the South Sioux City Star.
Before going to work at The Journal, Mrs. Goodson was a copywriter for the T.S. Martin Department Store. In 1954, she was crowned Sioux City's Mardis Grass Queen.
She was involved in a number community activities and was best known for her efforts to save Central High School, where she was a third generation graduate. She helped organize the Castle on the Hill Association, serving as an officer and on the board.
At The Journal, she helped with the newspaper's charity, the Goodfellow Fund.
Mrs. Goodson was a sustaining member of Junior League of Sioux City and served on the boards of the Sioux City Community Theater and the Harriet Ballou New Hope Center. She belonged to the Tri-State Stroke Club, 100 Club, Okoboji Protection Association, the Sioux City Boat Club and First Congregational Church. She was an honorary member of the University of Okoboji.
She was a summer resident of Lake Okoboji and was an avid golfer.
Survivors include her former husband, Raymond, of Montana; four daughters, Gretchen of Houston, Texas, Gayle and Gigi of Sioux City and Ginger of Los Angeles, and three nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

Naomi L. Asbury
Naomi L. Asbury. 81, of Sioux City died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Whitfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Kretzschmar officiating. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery at Allen, Neb. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mrs. Asbury was born June 2, 1916, in Smithland, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Grace (Rogers) Winterringer. She was raised in Sioux City and graduated from East High School.
She married Wesley R. Asbury on Aug. 15, 1936, in Ponca, Neb. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church and was active in the church.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Janice and her husband, Uuno Kanto, of Sioux City and Margaret "Peggy" Pearson of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren, David and Michelle Kanto and Perry, William and Theodore Pearson; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother.
Glenn H. Breiland
Glenn H. Breiland, 88, of Alpena, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at his son's residence in Alpena following a brief illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Allen D. Call, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Sergeant Floyd Post 1973. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Breiland was born Oct. 29, 1908, in Manitoba, Canada, the son of Martin and Margaret (Lee) Breiland.
He married Bonnie Lou Phillips on Nov. 16, 1945, in Sioux City. She died Sept. 6, 1993, in Sioux City.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He attended numerous military reunions throughout the years.
Mr. Breiland was a self-employed truck driver for 54 years, retiring in 1987. He moved to Alpena in July 1997.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Eagles Lodge in Fargo, N.D. He enjoyed horses.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Gary and Geraldine of Alpena; and a sister, Thelma Breiland of Fargo, N.D.
Samantha Hamar
Samantha "Mattie" Hamar, 93, of Valentine, Neb., formerly of South Sioux City and Newcastle, Neb., died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, in Valentine.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Valentine. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Chapel of the Pines of Valentine is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Hamar was born Jan. 16, 1904, in Newcastle, the daughter of Eugene and Anna Wallace.
She married Nels Hamar on Jan. 15, 1920, in Valentine. They farmed in the Martin, S.D., area until 1960, when they moved to an acreage near South Sioux City. He died April 27, 1981. She moved to Valentine.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Darold and Debbie of Hinton, Iowa, Wayne and Vivian of Long Valley, S.D., and Clair and Vera of Jackson, Neb.; a daughter and her husband, Bonnie and Gene Stewart of Valentine; 20 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and 31 great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
George E. Noonan
George E. Noonan, 76, of Sioux City died of a heart attack Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Stephanie Raphael-Nakos officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post 662. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Noonan was born April 24, 1921, in Lyons, Neb., the son of George D. and Pearl A. (Fisher) Noonan.
He married Margaret K. Dungan on March 9, 1948, in Minnetonka, Minn.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a gunner, stationed in Italy.
He was a member of Trimble United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son, George D. of San Francisco, Calif.; two daughters, Margaret A. Slater of Roland Heights, Calif., and Rosalyce H. Noonan of Shakopee, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Elma Mahany of Sioux City and Mildred Noonan of Seattle, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Timmy Kay; a brother, Cecil Noonan; and a sister, Rose Swanson.
Kathryn A. Olsen
Kathryn A. "Muggs" Olsen, 67, of North Platte, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at the North Platte Care Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Joseph A. Dillinger, pastor, and the Rev. George B. McFadden officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Mrs. Olsen was born Oct. 16, 1929, in Duluth, Minn., the daughter of John and Mildred (Nuessle) Coffey. She attended the University of South Dakota and Morningside College. She had lived most of her life in Sioux City.
She married Marven E. Olsen on Sept. 5, 1953, in Sioux City. He died April 16, 1995, in Omaha, Neb.
She retired as vice president of the Culligan Soft Water Company in Sioux City. She moved to North Platte two years ago.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Connie and her husband, Jeff Brittan, of North Platte and Elizabeth Olsen of Omaha; two brothers and their wives, Jerome J. and Ann P. Coffey and John T. and Mary Ann Coffey, all of Sioux City; and four grandchildren, Ann, Conor, Mollie and Colin Brittan.
Pallbearers will be Mark and Paul Coffey, Richard and Greg Ahmann, Robert Olsen and Conor Brittan.
Bernard M. Sanford
Bernard Mitchell Sanford, 84, of Sioux City died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home following a lengthy illness.
Memorial services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Congregation Beth Shalom, with spiritual leader James Chairman officiating. Private burial services will be in Mount Sinai Cemetery. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Sanford was born Aug. 10, 1913, in Aurelia, Iowa, the son of Morris and Esther (Pickus) Skalovsky. He attended Sioux City schools, graduating from Central High School in 1931. He attended the University of Iowa, where he received his degree in chemical engineering.
He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II.
He married Dorothy Potash on March 11, 1972, in Sioux City. She died Aug. 1, 1995, in Sioux City.
He was employed as an independent insurance agent with Sanford Bros. Agency and later with Grandy Pratt Company, retiring in 1991.
He was a member of Mount Sinai Temple (now Congregation Beth Shalom), where he served as treasurer, the Landmark Lodge 103 A.F.&A.M., the Abu Bekr Shrine, the American Legion and a number of civic organizations. He was active in the local insurance industry professional organizations.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Jeff and Cynthia of Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter and her husband, Nancy and Jerald Pullins of New Canaan, Conn.; two step sons, Michael Potash and his wife, Helena, and John Potash, all of Sioux City; a step daughter and her husband, Barbara and Larry Jackson of Richmond, Va.; a brother-in-law and his wife, James and Estie Sherman of Sioux City; his mother-in-law, Reva Chairman of Sioux City; two sisters-in-law, Betty Sanford of Omaha and Elaine and her husband, Everett Evnen, of Lincoln, Neb.; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Theodore.
Memorials have been established in his name with Congregation Beth Shalom and Hospice of Siouxland.
Carroll W. Schubert
Carroll W. Schubert, 74, of Sioux City died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Thomas Geelan, pastor of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Schubert was born Aug. 8, 1923, in Sioux City, the son of George and Anna (Carroll) Schubert. He attended St. Boniface Grade School and Central High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medical technician.
He married Helen Humphrey in 1940, in Pender, Neb. She died June 12, 1986, in Sioux City.
He was employed as a paint salesman for Hansen Glass and Paint and was a painter for Chick Blankenship Painting and Decorating.
He was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of Painters Local Union 214.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Jim and Ginny and Gary and Betsy, all of Sioux City; three daughters and their husbands, Karen and Dick Hagaman and Mary and Jim Adams, all of Sioux City, and Debbie and Jim Marshall of Wakefield, Kan.; a brother, Archie of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters, Irene Davis and Helen and her husband, John Hall, all of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren, Scott, Darrick and Lindsey Schubert, Melinda Vogt, Rhonda and Shelly Adams, Jamie Duncan, Brianne and Allie Marshall and Troy and Todd Hagaman; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers will be Scott and Darrick Schubert, Troy and Todd Hagaman, Scott Vogt and Dale Duncan.
Leighton Steckel
Leighton "Bud" Steckel, 73, of Sioux City died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Merrill Muller, pastor of Riverside United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Steckel was born July 23, 1924, in Oswego, Ill. He graduated from Oswego High School and attended North Central College in Naperville, Ill.
He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal.
He moved to Sioux City in the early 1960s and attended Morningside College.
He was employed with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in the late 1970s.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 64 and the Elks Lodge 112. He was a campaign worker for the Democratic Party and helped organized a cribbage league in Sioux City in the early 1970s.
Survivors include his mother, Ruth Steckel of Tucson, Ariz.; his special friend, Beverly Babb of Sioux City; two sons, Lonnie Steckel of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Tim Herren of Trabuco Caynon, Calif.; three daughters, Ellen Stevens of Lakeside, Calif., and Kim and her husband, Bill Nielsen, and Terri and her husband, Thomas Calvillo, all of Sioux City; two brothers, Jack of Apopka, Fla. and Jim of Tucson, Ariz.; four step children, Kathy Harmon, Kevin Babb, Teresa Krisl and Todd Babb, all of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Jeanne A. Timm
Jeanne A. Timm, 79, of Baton Rouge, La., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 1997, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.
Services were held Monday, Sept. 15, at the Walsh Funeral Home in Baton Rouge. Burial was in Greenoaks Memorial Park Cemetery.
Leora A. Willson
Leora A. (Goddard) Willson, 72, of Sioux City died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William H. Steward officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Mrs. Willson was born Feb. 13, 1925, in Hubbard, Neb. She attended school in Homer, Neb., graduating in 1943. She moved to Sioux City in 1943.
She married Gerald Willson on June 26, 1954, in Nashua, Iowa. He died June 21, 1991, in Sioux City. She was employed with Aalfs Manufacturing for many years, then as a clerk at the Ben Franklin Store in Morningside. The couple owned and operated Willson's Greenhouse.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Esther Circle and the Order of the Eastern Star 502.
Survivors include a daughter, Marshelle Willson of Fulton, Mo., and a brother, James Goddard of Homer, Neb.
She preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Rozella Blair and Izabelle Queen; and three brothers, Milton, Donald and Forrest Goddard.
Memorials may be directed to Grace United Methodists Church.

Donald W. Andersen
HARTINGTON, Neb. - Donald "Don" Walter Andersen, 64, of Hartington died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at his residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartington, with the Rev. Paul Reimers officiating. Burial will be in Hartington City Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5283 of Hartington. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.
Mr. Andersen was born Dec. 18, 1932, in Hartington, the son of Christian Peter and Edna Olive (Joslin) Andersen.
He was raised and farmed near Hartington. He served in the Armed Forces during the Korean War.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Hartington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5283.
Survivors include his mother of Hartington; a brother and his wife, Duane and Mary of Vermillion; three sisters, Marguerite Stage of Laurel, Neb., Nancy and her husband, Garrett Van Surksum, of Sioux City and Beverly Andersen of Omaha; and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Roger Broderseon, Gerry Cunningham, Merlin Evans, Terry Jueden, Arnold Christensen and Wendell Milander.
Violet M. Andriessen
HAWARDEN, Iowa - Violet M. Andriessen, 77, of Hawarden died Monday, Sept. 22, 1997, at Hass Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden, with the Rev. David Tellinghuisen officaiting. Private family burial services of the cremated remains will be in Bluffview Cemetery at Vermillion, S.D. There will be no visitation.
Mrs. Andriessen was born May 14, 1920, in Hawarden, the daughter of Fred and Delphia (Goodrich) Johnson. She graduated from Hawarden High School in 1938.
She married George Andriessen on April 6, 1947, in Hawarden. The couple made their home in Vermillion. He died July 15, 1971. She returned to Hawarden a few years ago.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Kenneth and Patti of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a grandson, Samuel Andriessen; a brother, Richard Johnson; and two sisters, Helen Metzger of Elgin, Ill. and Maxine Wessels of Le Mars, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Strong, and a brother, Clarence Johnson.
Keith Campbell
SHELDON, Iowa - Keith Campbell, 73, of Sheldon died of emphysema Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. John McGuirk and the Rev. James McAlpin officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today, with a rosary at 7 p.m. by St. Patrick's Guild and a Scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.
Mr. Campbell was born March 31, 1924, in Dumont, Iowa, the son of John and Mary (Hughes) Campbell. He was raised in Humboldt, Iowa, graduating from high school in 1941.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, where he flew 35 missions with the 8th Air Force. His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters.
He graduated from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, in 1947, and went on to Georgetown University. In September 1950 he was called back to the service and spent two years in Germany.
He married Mary Alice Fox in 1954, at Algona, Iowa.
He was employed as a bank examiner for the FDIC, the LaSalle National Bank of Chicago and from 1956 to 1961, the Iowa Des Moines National Bank. In 1961, he and R.D. Dixon chartered a new bank in Sheldon and he served as president of the Citizens State Bank for 31 years. He retired from the Iowa National Guard in 1978.
He was a member of St Patrick's Catholic Church, where he served as parish trustee, and a member of the finance committee. He served as president of the Sheldon Chamber of Commerce and on the boards of the N.W. Work Activity Center, the St. Ambrose Foundation and the Sheldon Hospital Foundation, as president of the Iowa Independent Bankers Association in 1975 to 1976, and the Sheldon Country Club. He was an early president of the Iowa Golf Association and was the Iowa Senior Open champion in 1988. He enjoyed golf.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Patricia and her husband, John Shea, of Granville, Iowa, and Kathryn Campbell of Tucson, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Nicki, Andy, Keith and John Shea; a brother, Jack; three sisters, Dorothy Claney, Ruth Dockery and Mary Vander Bie; and 15 nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be directed to the American Lung Association, the Northwest Iowa Health Center or the Home Care Select (Hospice).
Christina Dausel
BATTLE CREEK, Iowa - Christina Dausel, 97, of Battle Creek died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, at the Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek, with the Rev. Benjamin Ray officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Battle Creek.
Mrs. Dausel was born Sept. 27, 1899, in Battle Creek the daughter of Jens and Jensina Kirkholm.
She married Will Dausel on April 20, 1922. The couple farmed in the Battle Creek area until their retirement in 1945. He died Nov. 15, 1973. She had been a resident of Willow Dale Care Center for 15 years.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Ladies Aid, a charter member of the Ladies Country Club, the Senior Citizens Center and various card clubs.
Survivors include three daughters, Marjorie Stephan of Alta Loma, Calif., Marion and her husband, Hillis Lund, of Hemet, Calif. and Whelma and her husband, Paul Kern, of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marie Sorenson of Sun City, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter; a son-in-law; a brother, Jen Kirkholm; and a sister, Annie Fowler.
Pallbearers will be Terry, Dennis, Tom and Jon Kern, Kent Dittmer and Gordon Morrice.
Douglas M. Eckardt
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Douglas M. Eckardt, 43, of Sioux Center died Saturday at Sioux Center Community Hospital.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. today at the B.J. Haan Auditorium at Dordt College in Sioux Center. Private family burial services will be on Thursday. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Covenant Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m., at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
Alma I. Grashoff
AURELIA, Iowa - Alma I. Grashoff, 95, of Aurelia died Monday at the Sunset Knoll Retirement Home in Aurelia.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Aurelia. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Wharton-Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia.
Debra Miller
SPENCER, Iowa - Debra Miller, 46, of Spencer died Monday at her residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Assembly of God in Spencer. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Clifford I. Rabe
SAC CITY, Iowa - Clifford Ivan Rabe, 84, of Sac City died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at his residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Sac City. Burial will be in Odebolt (Iowa) Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.
Mr. Rabe was born Nov. 4, 1912, in Odebolt, the son of Carl William and Effie (McDonough) Rabe. He was baptized and confirmed in Odebolt. He attended Cook Township 7 and Odebolt High School.
He married Grace Ford and later married Louise McFarland.
He farmed and fed cattle with his brother near Lake View, Iowa, until retiring. He had lived in Denison, Iowa. He enjoyed trains and was a skilled carpenter.
Survivors include his sister, Opal McGeachy of Loveland, Colo.; three nieces, Judy Hartsell, Mary Sirovy and Virginia Dobler; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother and sister and a brother, Wayne.
Henry Redinius
ASHTON, Iowa - Henry Redinius, 89, of Ashton died Sunday at the Country View Manor in Sibley, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sibley. Burial will be in Holman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Walton, Roste and Vogel Funeral Home in Ashton.
Eilene J. Sanow
HINTON, Iowa - Eilene Jean Sanow, 68, of Hinton died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at a Sioux City hsopital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa, with the Rev. Larry Fett officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Sanow was born March 3, 1929, in Elk Point, S.D., the daughter of John and Shara Mae (Davis) Beach. She attended country school near Brunsville, Iowa.
She married Leslie Sanow on March 24, 1946, in Le Mars. The couple made their home in Plymouth County. He died Dec. 9, 1990.
She enjoyed horses, collecting dolls and antiques.
Survivors include five daughters and their husbands, Joan and Kenneth Bruscher and Connie and Richard Lalk, all of Le Mars, Barbara and Keith Nicks of Hinton, Roberta and Dennis Lundquist of Sioux City and Tracey and William Lalk of Remsen, Iowa; two sons and their wives, James and Becky of Remsen and William "Pete" and Linda of Struble, Iowa; two sisters, Darlene Van Vorst and Dorothy and her husband, Bud Martin, all of Le Mars; four brothers, John and his wife, Betty, of Le Mars, Mike, Gary and Bobby Beach; two sons-in-law and their wives, James and Mary Nicks of Hinton and Mike and Sally Vander Weide of Spencer, Iowa; 26 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Suzanne Nicks and Bonnie Vander Weide; and a brother, Delbert Beach.
Pallbearers will be Ronald, Donald, Kevin and Mike Bruscher, Jerry Rock, Gregg Pederson, James Taylor and Clynton Sanow.

LE MARS, Iowa - D.J. "Dick" Westhoff, 90, of rural Le Mars died Monday, Sept. 22, 1997, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Garden Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mr. Westhoff was born Nov. 6, 1906, in Grant Township, the son of Dietrich and Gretje (Ludwigs) Westhoff. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended country school in Grant Township.
He married Irene Frerichs on Feb. 7, 1935. She died Nov. 19, 1936. He married Amanda Jelken on March 23, 1941.
He farmed on the family farm.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Louis and Rachel of Le Mars; three grandchildren, Terri Benson, Lora Berner and Keith Westhoff; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Doretta Kruse and Emma Popken.
