Lavinna J. Kobold
Lavinna J. Kobold, 91, of Neligh, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, died Friday at Neligh Nursing Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Neligh. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery near Clearwater, Neb. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Huffman's Snider Chapel in Clearwater. Visitation will resume at 6 p.m. today, with a wake service at 7 p.m., at the church.
Beatrice Johnson
Beatrice Johnson, 79, of Sioux City died Sunday at her residence.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Emma B. Sager
Emma Blanche Sager, 87, of Sioux City died Saturday, April 11, 1998, in Sioux City.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, Iowa, with the Rev. Marvin Mueller officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Sager was born Dec. 18, 1910, in Lawton, the daughter of Fred Hayes and Blanche Myrtle (Joseph) Couch. She was raised in Lawton, graduating from Lawton High School and Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa.
She married Louie D. Sager on May 24, 1941, in Hartington, Neb.
She had moved to rural Merrill, Iowa, and then to rural Hinton, Iowa. She taught school from 1950 to 1978 in rural Hinton and Kingsley, Iowa, and then at Kingsley-Pierson Community School. She moved to Lawton in 1979.
Mr. Sager died Aug. 16, 1984. She entered Sunrise Retirement Center in January 1992.
She was a member of Community Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Women, the Eastern Star of Kingsley and the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Louie E. and Connie of South Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Mary Ann and Paul Niemeier of Lawton, Iowa; two sisters, Georgian Sparr of Lawton and Josephine Frye of Newark, Ohio; five grandchildren, Chadwick Sager, Angela Votek and Felicia, Richard and Melissa Niemeier; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers will be Fred, Jeff, James and Kim Sparr, Don Wohlert and Nick Votek.
Memorials may be directed to either Community Presbyterian Church or the Sunrise Retirement Center.
Abraham J. Ferris
Abraham J. "A.J." Ferris, 77, of Sioux City died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital of complications of a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Ferris was born Oct. 30, 1920, in Sioux City, the son of William A. and Zaher (Sroer) Ferris.
He attended Washington Elementary School and graduated from East High School in 1939. He attended Morningside College, graduating in 1950.
He served in the U.S. Army with the Quartermaster Corps during World War II.
He married Katherine Browning on Dec. 27, 1948, in Sioux City.
He was employed with Nutrena Feeds from 1950 to 1958 as a traffic manager. He then owned and operated Ferris Shoe Repair.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Theresa and Eugene Grove of Schuyler, Neb., and Mari and Richard Radtke of Sutherland, Iowa; two sons, James and his wife, Deb, of Sioux City and Marc of Bronson, Iowa; a brother, Bill of Sioux City; a sister, Glory Majeres of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Richard; and two brothers, Charles and Albert.
Memorials may be directed to St. Luke's Diabetes Center in Sioux City.
Howard C. Mieras
Howard Charles Mieras, 77, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Friday, April 10, 1998, at his residence.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Charles Klink officiating. Private graveside services will be Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Mieras was born May 14, 1920, in Sioux City, the son of Charles and Florence (Steele) Mieras.
He moved with his family to Maurice, Iowa as a child. He graduated from Maurice High School and attended welding school in Sioux City. He returned to the farm in Maurice in 1942.
He married Esther R. VanRoekel on June 2, 1948, in Maurice. He continued to farm until 1951, when the couple moved to Sioux City.
In Sioux City, he was employed with Goodyear Tire Company, T&W Tire Company and later as a mechanic for the city.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where he served on the board of trustees for many years.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Evelyn Ferris of Dallas, Ore., and Dr. Eileen and her husband,Dr. Randy Kohlenberg,of Greensboro, N.C.; a brother, Jason of San Bernadino, Calif.; four sisters, Helen Mieras of Pensacola, Fla., Audrey Lynberg of West Covina, Calif., Nellie Derby of Florissant, Mo., and Rebecca Sirois of San Diego, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Brent, Lisa and William.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marcia Nieras Mahoney.
Pallbearers will be Barry Betsworth, Carmen Bornholtz, Dan Barrett, Mark Wilmes, Tim Rubel and Reno Felecioni.

Paul D. Rysdam

Paul D. Rysdam, 76, of Sioux City died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at a Sergeant Bluff nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home, with the Rev. Emery Killian, pastor of First Christian Church in Sloan, Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Sergeant Bluff Post 1973. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Rysdam was born April 21, 1921, in Hornick, Iowa, the son of Peter and Bertha (Abel) Rysdam. He graduated from Sloan High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in Europe and Africa.
He was employed with Armour Packing Company for many years, retiring from there.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Schull Post 580.
Survivors include a daughter, Paula Hafner of Sioux City; two brothers, Harold and Max, both of Santa Cruz, Calif.; three sisters, Cecil Gay and Virginia Larson, both of Sloan, and Opal Pauk of Story City, Iowa; two grandchildren, Burgon and Rigel Hafner; and his special friend, Helen Kellison of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dale.
Pallbearers will be Burton Baker, Paul Pauk, Bob Gay and John Patterson.
William G. Johnson
William G. "Bill" Johnson, 72, of Sioux City died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, with the Rev. James L. Berka officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Krishen A. Persaud officiating, followed by a Masonic service conducted by Morningside Lodge 615 A.F.&A.M., all at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Johnson was born March 19, 1926, in Redfield, S.D.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
He married Marilyn M. Reynders on June 9, 1973, in Sioux City.
He was employed with the Sioux City Stockyards as a livestock order buyer, retiring after more than 40 years. Following his retirement, he was employed with Wells Fargo at the Terra Centre.
He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Morningside Masonic Lodge 615 A.F.&A.M., the Sioux City Scottish Rite and York Rite Bodies, the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, the Abu Bekr White Horse Patrol and the Little Yellow Dog.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Duggan P. Johnson and Denny W. Johnson and Dorothy Cowles, all of Sioux City; three daughters and their husbands, Cathy and Dick Mowry of Littleton, Colo., and Joni and Corey Noonan and Maggie and Tim Norton, all of Sioux City; and 11 grandchildren, Andrew D., Meggan K. and Joseph P. Johnson, Jessica M. and Erin M. Mowry, Hilary A., Michael P. and Bridget C. Noonan, Jesse M. Cowles and Adam T. and Claire M. Norton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul A. and Vera C. (McBeath) Johnson; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth "Libby" Norton.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
Grace M. Meek
Grace M. Meek, 84, Florence, Ariz., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, April 5, 1998, at a Phoenix hospital following a brief illness.
Memorial services were held Saturday, April 11, at First Presbyterian Church in Florence. Simes Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Meek, the former Grace Albertson, was born Oct. 19, 1913, at Pender, Neb.
She married Seth Meek on Nov. 27, 1937, at Pender. The couple lived in Sioux City for 36 years before moving to Arizona in 1983.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Vern Nelson of Los Lumas, N.M., and Rebecca and Wayne Stamper of Japan; a son and his wife, Richard and Janice Meek of Sioux City; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Lloyd B. Graves
Lloyd B. Graves, 83, of Sioux City died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at his residence following a brief illness.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Graceland Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Merrill Muller, pastor of Riverside United Methodist Church, officiating. The body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Graves was born Dec. 3, 1914, in Sioux City. He attended East High School until he moved with his family to Browns Valley, Minn. The family returned to Sioux City.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in Europe.
He was employed with Graves Brothers Furniture Company for many years and later was self-employed in various retail sales in the Sioux City area.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Shull Post 580.
Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
Irene J. Rohlfsen
Irene J. Rohlfsen, 85, of Beresford, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday at a Sioux Falls, S.D.. hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Prairie View Cemetery at Paullina, Iowa. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel of Sioux City is in charge of the arrangements.
Agnes M. Beyer
Agnes M. (Jochum) Beyer, 74, of Sioux City died Saturday, April 11, 1998, in Silver Spring, Md.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph A. Dillinger, associate pastor, and the Rev. James A. Bruch, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery at Ellendale, Iowa. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. and a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Mrs. Beyer was born Nov. 30, 1923, in Alton, Iowa. She was raised in Alton.
She married Vincent M. Beyer on Nov. 28, 1946, in Alton. The couple moved to Sioux City from Akron, Iowa in 1959. He died June 1, 1977, in Sioux City.
She was employed with Casey's General Store.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and enjoyed flower gardening.
Survivors include six daughters, JoAnn Storer Hansen of Denver, Colo., Joyce and her husband, James Bear, of Aurora, Colo., Nancy Beyer and her husband, Joe Albright, of Minnetonka, Minn., Cindy and her husband, Glenn Scherb, of Kiester, Minn., Brenda Beyer and her husband, Barry Schade, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Lori Beyer of Silver Spring, Md.; four sons and their wives, Ken and Carol of Rock Valley, Iowa, Jim and Sharon of Ponca City, Okla., Rick and Cindy of Sioux City and Randy and Shelly of Blair, Neb.; her mother, Josephine (Block) Jochum of Alton; four sisters, Loretta and her husband, Roy Murphy, of Sheldon, Iowa, Hilda Rolfes of Luverne, Minn., Martha Jochum of Alton and Rita and her husband, Jerome Fischer, of Hospers, Iowa; a brother-in-law and his wife, Bob and Lorraine Fischer of Granville, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Hugo G. Jochum; a sister, Evelyn Fischer; and a brother-in-law, Elmer Rolfes.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Brad, Dustin, Nicholas, Jeremy and Davis Beyer and David Albright.
Montie L. Green
Montie L. Green, 61, of Dakota City died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mike Anderson, pastor of Dakota City United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Green was born May 23, 1936, in Utica, S.D., the daughter of Harold and Valeria (Pixler) Maaske.
She married Henry "Red" Gay on Jan. 28, 1959, in Reno, Nev. He died July 13, 1978, in Dakota City. She married John A. Green on Dec. 31, 1982, in Dakota City.
She was employed as a supervisor at IBP. for 14 years and with the Dakota County Sheriff's Office for one year. She was also employed as a bingo manager at Atokad Park for 10 years. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed golfing.
Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Fred and Wanda Gay of Homer, Neb.; a daughter, Sandra Willems and her finance, Don Coffey, of Sioux City; a stepson and his wife, Michael and Sherry Green of Denver, Colo.; five brothers and their wives, Ken and Tami Maaske, Duane and Patsy Maaske, Bob and Carol Maaske and William and Terri Maaske, all of Sioux City, and Leonard and Cookie Maaske of Bartlet, Texas; a sister, Nina Harder of Sioux City; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a stepdaughter, Lisa Green; and a sister, Kay Knudsen.
Pallbearers will be her nieces, Stormie Westphal, Amber Michaelson, Jeanne Delfs, Cindy Combs and Tena and Melissa Maaske.

Robert E. Mettlin Sr., 76, of South Sioux City, formerly of Sioux City, died Friday at a Sioux City hospital.
There will be no services. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. today at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Omaha Valley Cemetery at Homer, Neb.

CHEROKEE, Iowa - Krista Ann Johnson, 6, daughter of Kevin and Kari Johnson of Cherokee, died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at the University Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, of heart complications.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Church of Christ in Cherokee, with Gregg Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Township Cemetery at Meriden, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. Visitation will resume from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a time for remembering at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. There will be a family prayer service at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Maxine I. Newman
SALIX, Iowa - Maxine Ida Newman, 68, of Salix died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, with the Rev. Bruce Lawler officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m., at the church. Wood Funeral Home of Sloan, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Newman was born April 19, 1929, in Mapleton, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Kathern (Anthony) Schlesis. She graduated from Mapleton High School in 1946.
She married James Newman on Nov. 28, 1950, in Mapleton. The couple lived in Oklahoma before returning to Iowa in 1963. They moved to Salix in 1967.
She was employed with American Airlines and Zenith Corporation and was a waitress before becoming the Salix city clerk. She retired in 1993.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Tabernacle Society and American Legion Smith-Rhodes Post 295 Auxiliary in Sloan.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, James D. and Patricia Zeeb of San Diego, Calif., Jerry and his wife, Shirley, of Salix and Jeff and his wife, Veronica, of Los Angeles; two daughters, Jana Newman Drew and her husband, David, and Jolene Newman Walker, all of Sioux City; nine grandchildren, Ashlee, Matthew and Jocelyn Newman, Joshua, Jessica, Jordan and Jenna Drew and Janell and Jill Walker; and three sisters and their husbands, Louise and Leonard Horn of Paynesville, Minn., Ardis and Leonard Langel of Le Mars, Iowa, and Virginia and Gilbert Hansel-Zimon of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jack Wayne; a grandson, Tyler Newman; and two brothers, William and Robert.
John H. Dose Jr.
DANBURY, Iowa - John Henry Dose Jr., 71, of rural Danbury died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon, Iowa, with Pastor Michael Harman officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion McNiff Post 389 of Anthon. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.
Mr. Dose was born March 23, 1927, near Danbury, the son of John and Elizabeth (Brown) Dose Sr. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith and attended country school in the Danbury area.
He served in the U.S. Army for two years during World War II.
He married Elsie Thiel on June 20, 1948, in Mapleton, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Danbury area.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served in various offices, and American Legion McNiff Post 389.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Margie and Charles Lynch of Omaha, Neb., Sally and Harold Geisinger of Storm Lake, Iowa, Lisa Dose and Dennis Rohlk of Ida Grove, Iowa, and Karen and Russ Wulf of Danbury; two sons, Dave and Donna of Storm Lake and Andy and Jo of Danbury; 21 grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother and his wife, Albert and Loraine of Battle Creek, Iowa; and two sisters and their husbands, Alice and Laverne Botcher of Avoca, Iowa, and Anna and LeRoy Wasmund of Anthon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Jean Dose.

WYNOT, Neb. - Norbert P. Wuebben, 79, of Alturas, Calif., formerly of Wynot, died Friday at Warner View Convalescence Center in Alturas.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church in Wynot. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Wynot American Legion Post 31. Visitation will be from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Neb. There will be a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

GRANVILLE, Iowa - Leo Pottebaum, 94, of Granville died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa, following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, with the Rev. Dan Knipper, his nephew of Waterloo, Iowa, and the Rev. James Tigges of Alton, Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the church. Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Pottebaum was born Aug. 8, 1903, in rural Alton, the son of Bernard and Catherine (Friedmann) Pottebaum. He was raised in the Alton area and attended St. Mary's Academy in Alton.
He then farmed with his father.
He married Hilda Knipper on Sept. 4, 1928, in Dyersville, Iowa. The couple farmed near Granville and retired on the farm in 1957. She died April 14, 1991.
He entered the Heartland Care Center in November 1996.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Le Mars.
Survivors include his adopted daughter and her husband, Clare and Ivan Pottebaum of Granville; seven adopted grandchildren; 17 adopted great-grandchildren; a brother, Martin of Remsen; a sister-in-law, Marian Pottebaum of Marcus; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, Frank, John, William, Anton, Henry and Al; and five sisters, Ann Streff, Sister Mary Leola, Mary Portz, Rose Minten and Hilda Haupert.
Pallbearers will be Gerry Budden, Brad Fear, Jim Homan, Jim Lange, Leon Pottebaum and Glenn Reichle.
