Hazel W. Hawthorn
Hazel Waples Hawthorn, 104, of Sioux City died Monday at Countryside Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Center Township Cemetery, near Castana, Iowa. There will be no visitation. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Patrick J. Riibe
Patrick J. Riibe, 79, of Sioux City died Monday, April 20, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services were held Tuesday, April 21 at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul-Louis Arts of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery at Hartington, Neb.

Mr. Riibe was born March 27, 1919, in Hartington, the son of Frank and Barbara (Manley) Riibe. He attended school in Hartington. He moved to Sioux City in 1933.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1939 to 1946. In 1951, he moved from Sioux City to Hawthorne, Calif.

He married Doris Buchanan on Aug. 6, 1955, in Hawthorne.

He was employed with Aero-Space Corporation in Hawthorne. The couple returned to Sioux City in 1989.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Hawthorne, the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife; a sister, Rita Kirchmeier; a brother, Vincent Riibe; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Patrick; two sisters, Madeline Jueden and Sally Skarnulis; and four brothers, Joe, Gene, Michael and Sylvester.

Frieda H. Lockmar
Frieda Hedwig Lockmar, 94, of Post Falls, Idaho, formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, April 20, 1998, in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, in Memorial Park Cemetery at Sioux City. English Funeral Home of Post Falls is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Lockmar was born Nov. 8, 1903, in Berlin, Germany, the daughter of Walter and Minna (Fritcher) Schulze.

She married Lyman "Bud" Lockmar on April 14, 1928, in Sioux City. He died in December 1977.

She was employed as a receptionist/bookkeeper in the medical profession for doctors in the Sioux City area. She moved from Sioux City to Ione, Ore., where she lived for five years. She moved to Coeur d' Alene in 1991.

She was a member of Morningside Presbyterian Church in Sioux City and enjoyed crocheting and knitting.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Mae Wilson of Post Falls and Barbara Ellen Rose of Edgewood, Md.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Terri Wilson.

Arthur H. Swanson
Arthur H. Swanson, 91, of Sioux City died Monday; Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Virginia M. Flaugh
Virginia Mae Flaugh, 71, of Sioux City died Tuesday at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Cora L. Wilkinson
Cora L. Wilkinson, 66, of Sioux City died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Marvin Mueller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Mrs. Wilkinson was born Jan. 22, 1932, in Sioux City, the daughter of James and Marion (Morgan) Marshall. She attended Sioux City public schools.

She was married in 1968, in Elk Point, S.D.

She was employed as a waitress for more than 40 years at several Sioux City restaurants.

She was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church and the Chicago Cubs Fan Club. She enjoyed baseball.

Survivors include two sons, Bobby and Jimmy, both of Sioux City; a granddaughter, Amber Wilkinson; three sisters, Leshia and her husband,John Bunch, and Doris and her husband, Jack Willson, all of Sioux City, and Bernice Weitz of California; and three brothers and their wives, Dave and Barb Marshall of Sioux City, Robert and Sharon Marshall of California and Harold and June Marshall of Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John and Charles Marshall.

Pallbearers will be Robert, Jim and Jason Bunch, Dave Marshall and Kevin and John Criddle.

Verda Peterson
Verda Peterson, 73, of Sioux City died Monday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Reva Sherman
Reva Sherman, 96, of Sioux City died Tuesday at a Sioux City care center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Congregation Beth Shalom. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Winifred B. Miller
Winifred B. Miller, Cuero, Texas, formerly of Sioux City, died Monday; Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Ethel E. Matthews
Ethel E. Matthews, 90, of Sioux City died Tuesday; Larkin Morningside Funeral Home.

Janice Hanson
EMERSON, Neb. - Janice Mae Hanson, 71, of Emerson died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Cornerstone Assembly Church in Pender, Neb., with the Rev. Ralph Youngman officiating. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery at Wakefield, Neb. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Bressler-Humlicek Funeral Home in Wakefield.

Mrs. Hanson was born July 28, 1926, in Wausa, Neb., the daughter of Ruben and Esther (Windell) Anderson. She graduated from Wausa High School and attended Wayne State College, receiving her degree in home economics in 1953.

She taught school near Randolph, Neb.

She married Melvin Hanson on June 12, 1954. The couple made their home on the family farm.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters and their husbands, Lois and Ray Pirozek of Sioux City, Mary Ann and Kirk Bryne of Wakefield and Sharon and Tom Duff of Breda, Iowa; two brothers and their wives, Harley and Lois Anderson of Wausa and Leon and Dahlonna Anderson of Fort Worth, Texas; and seven grandchildren, Christopher, Amanda and Kayla Pirozek, Rebecca and Daniel Simpson and Andrew and Jonathan Duff.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gary and an infant brother; an infant son, Daniel; and a son-in-law, Jeff Simpson.

Bernard Weyer
HAWARDEN, Iowa - Bernard Weyer, 70, of Hawarden died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at Hass Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Dean Shelly and the Rev. Paul Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.

Mr. Weyer was born April 17, 1928, in Lebanon, Iowa, the son of Nick and Marie (Arends) Weyer.

He married Betty Harkness on Nov. 11, 1945. She died Sept. 2, 1949. He married Myra Doty on Dec. 30, 1953, in Luverne, Minn.

He was employed in the dairy business for 38 years, many spent as the manager, retiring in 1980. In 1981, he began an upholstery shop, which he ran until 1996.

He was a member of Hawarden United Methodist Church. He was a former volunteer with the Hawarden Ambulance and a former member of the Hawarden Library Board.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Sherry Dowling and her fiance, Joe Olander, of Sioux City, Karon and her husband, Gary Smith, of Hudson, S.D. and Kay and her husband, Dennis Moller, of Alcester, S.D.; three sons, Butch and his wife, Sue, and Mark and his wife, Pam, all of Hawarden and Scott of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother and his wife, Frank and Betty of Fort Smith, Ark.; a sister and her husband, Jessie and Lynn Kissinger of Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Hattie Weyer of Hawarden; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Kevin Lynn; a brother, Peter; and his parents.

Vivian Kettelkamp
SPENCER, Iowa - Vivian Kettelkamp, 84, of Spencer died Saturday at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Warner Chapel in Spencer. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery at Ruthven, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Ernest J. Steffen
MOVILLE, Iowa - Ernest Jacob Steffen, 68, of Moville died Sunday, April 19, 1998, in Moville.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville, with the Rev. Michael Kroona officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at McCulloch Funeral Home in Moville.

Mr. Steffen was born Jan. 22, 1930, in Climbing Hill, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Dora (Mundt) Steffen. He graduated from Woodbury Central High School in 1950.

He married Marian Mavis Miller on June 7, 1953, in Moville.

He was a farmer in the Moville area and raised turkeys. He was also employed with the Soil Conservation Commission for five years.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was active in community, civic and lodge activities. He served as a Woodbury County trustee.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Susan and Steve McElrath of Moville; four sons and their wives, Jerry and Bernell, Gary and Terri and Larry and Susan, all of Moville, and Steven and Kim of Austin, Texas; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two sisters, Sylvia Fleming and Dorothy Mansfield, both of Muretta, Calif.; a brother and his wife, Marvin and Beverly of Muretta; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Elsie.

Pallbearers will be Jerry, Gary, Larry, Steven, Jason and Jamie Steffen and Steve McElrath.

Velma J. Poulsen
SPENCER, Iowa - Velma June Poulsen, 81, of Spencer died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer, with the Rev. Tom Dettmer officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. today in Memorial Park Cemetery at Sioux City. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Poulsen was born June 30, 1916, in Dakota City, the daughter of Frederick Walter and Agnes Ellen (Ralph) Beermann. She was raised in the Sioux City area and graduated from South Sioux City High School. She attended National Business Training School in Sioux City.

She was employed as a secretary/bookkeeper for the Bordon Company, the Extension Service and Salem Lutheran Church.

She married Carl F. Poulsen on Aug. 27, 1938, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple lived in Lawton and Bronson, Iowa, and Hubbard, Neb. They started the C.F. Poulsen's Construction Company in Hubbard. They moved to Spencer in 1964, where she continued to work in the family business until 1990.

She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the Eastern Star, where she was a past matron, the TTT, and the Okoboji Women's Club. She was also active in the Republican Party.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter and her husband, Mary Ellen and Robert McKee of Phoenix, Ariz.; four sons, Calvin and his wife, Peggy, Richard and his wife, Gail, and Craig, all of Spencer and Terry and his wife, Jean, of Nashville, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren, Traci Lee, Calvin Christian, Corey Carl, Jamie Lee, Julie Ann, Robert James, Kari Ann and Melissa Mary Poulsen, Sheri Lynn (Poulsen) Reed and Jennifer and Jillian Origer; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lamoyle Warren of Tekamah, Neb., and Ellen and her husband, William Rohde, of Homer, Neb.

She was preceded in death by an infant child; an infant grandson; and six brothers, Ralph, Melvin, Gordon, Walter, Richard and Lowell.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Traci, Calvin, Corey, Jamie, Julie, Robert, Kari, Melissa and David Lee Poulsen and Sheri Reed.

A memorial fund has been established at Bethany Lutheran Church.

Harry H. Bonnema
LE MARS, Iowa - Harry Henry Bonnema Jr., 80, of Le Mars died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars, with the Rev. Gary Landsness officating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mr. Bonnema was born Dec. 10, 1917, near Akron, Iowa, the son of Harry and Dora (Mohlmann) Bonnema. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith and attended country schools.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. Following his discharge, he returned to Iowa.

He married Dollie Wynia on Jan. 23, 1946, in Le Mars.

He was employed as a maintainer operator with Plymouth County for more than 20 years, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., Wasmer American Legion Post 241 and the Pioneer Machinery Club, where he served as president for 30 years. He was one of the original organizers of the Plymouth County Museum and enjoyed collecting tractors and antiques.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Janice Marie and Gary Gauwain of Newbury Park, Calif.; two grandsons, Robert and Kevin Strawder; two brothers and their wives, Marlyn and Joan of Orange City, Iowa, and Gerald and Lou of Bremerton, Wash.; and a sister and her husband, Evelyn and Hilbert Ludwigs of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Orville.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Rassel, Fred and Gene Haring, Dan Bohlken, Garret Havalaar, Gordon Schoellerman and Alvin Lipke.

Esther G. Aalberts
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Esther Geraldine Aalberts, 84, of Orange City died Monday, April 20, 1998, at the Long Term Care Facility of Orange City Municipal Hospital.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Raymond W. Weiss officiating. Burial will be prior to the service in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Mrs. Aalberts was born Nov. 23, 1913, in Maurice, Iowa, the daughter of James Samuel and Wilhelmina (Apenhorst) Duven. She moved with her family to Orange City when she was 6 years old. She attended Northwestern College.

She married Alfred Theodore Aalberts on June 9, 1937, in Orange City. The couple made their home in Orange City. He died Nov. 16, 1986, in Orange City. She entered the Long Term Care Facility in 1995.

She was a member of Trinity Reformed Church and Northwestern College Auxiliary.

Survivors include two sons, Leon and his wife Leon of Oswego, Ill., and James of Zeeland, Mich.; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Harry Tysen of Salina, Kan.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard Duven of Spokane, Wash.; and a sister, Edith Ver Steeg of Tigard, Ore.

Memorials may be directed to the Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation in Raleigh, N.C.

Dorothy S. Anderson
ALTA, Iowa - Dorothy Sophia Anderson, 79, of Alta died Monday at her daughter's residence in Ackworth, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta. Burial will be in Scandianavian Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Barker Funeral in Alta.
