Dorothy E. Triggs
Dorothy E. Triggs, 90, of Sioux City died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home following a long illness.
Services were held Monday, April 19, at Bethany Lutheran Church, the Rev. Arnold Vehling officiated. Burial was in Graceland Park Cemetery. There was no visitation. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Triggs was born July 10, 1907, in Belgrade, Neb., the daughter of Oliver W. and May (Allen) Money. She lived and attended school in Allen, Neb., until 1925.

She married Wilfred S. "Bill" Triggs on Sept. 25, 1925, in Dakota City, Neb. The couple then moved to Sioux City where she had lived since that time. He died Sept. 16, 1950. She was a homemaker for several years and later worked for Younkers.

She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and Jobes Daughter.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Dale Lisle, and Carolyn and Don Kessler, all of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Roger and Martell of Sioux City, and William "Bill" and Jackie of Eugene, Ore.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Allen Money of Fairfield, Calif.

She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Amaryllis Karris, and Elizabeth Bruner; and a great-grandson.

Pallbearers were Lee Kessler, Darin Kessler, Darrick, Lisle, Arron Lisle, Eric Haines, Frank Caporale, and Dan Woydziak.

Reva Sherman
Reva Sherman, 96, of Sioux City died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at the Indian Hills Care Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Congregation Beth Shalom, with James Sherman, spiritual leader of Congregation Beth Shalom. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Sherman was born Jan. 24, 1902, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of Abraham and Sarah (Nathanson) Gilinsky. She was raised in Council Bluffs and graduated from high school there.

She married Philip Sherman on June 11, 1922, in Council Bluffs. The couple moved to Allen, Neb., where they lived briefly before moving to Sioux City in 1927. He died March 14, 1965, in Sioux City.

She was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom, the Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood, Hadassah, one of the oldest members of the Allen, Neb. Order of the Eastern Star and was active in several volunteer organizations. During World War II, she was a "Gray Lady" with the American Red Cross.

Survivors include a son and his wife, James and Estie of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Elaine and Everett Evnen of Lincoln, Neb.; 10 grandchildren, Robert and Richard Evnen, Jaine Graham, Judith Benson, Barbara Jackson, Michael and John Potash, Jeffrey, David and Rabbi Shraga (Steven) Sherman; and 24 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Potash Sanford, two brothers and a sister.

Memorials in her name may be directed to Congregation Beth Shalom, Hadassah or Hospice of Siouxland.

Arthur H. Swanson
Arthur H. Swanson, 91, of Sioux City died Monday, April 20, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Marvin Mueller, of Morningside Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Swanson was born June 1, 1906, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Alfred and Amanda (Sand) Swanson. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1928 to 1929.

He married Dorothy Muth on Dec. 20, 1937, in Hawarden, Iowa. The couple lived in Alcester, S.D. before moving to Sioux City in 1944. He was employed with the Sioux City Transit Department and later as a carpenter, retiring in 1966. He enjoyed fishing and playing horseshoes.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Marilyn and William Bride of Sioux City and Linda and Raymond Daws of Dillsburg, Penn.; a brother and his wife, Leonard and Violet of Akron, Iowa; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Stanley, Herbert and Walter; and two sisters, Elsie Carlson and Antionetta Buum.

Pallbears will be Joaeph and Thomas Bride, William Graber, Brian and Brice Daws and Russell Redsville.

Memorials in his name may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.

Virginia M. Flaugh
Virginia Mae Flaugh, 71, of Sioux City died of Amytrothic Lateral Sclerosis Tuesday, April 21, 1998, in Sioux City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sheryl K. Ashley and the Rev. William H. Steward officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Flaugh was born May 21, 1926, in Edgerton, Wis., the daughter of Ray and Dorothy (McCord) Evans. She graduated from Neligh High School in Neligh, Neb. and Morningside College in Sioux City.

She married Oliver Flaugh in Little Rock, Ark., divorcing in 1976. He died May 23, 1979, in Sioux City.

She had lived in Sioux City for 40 years, with a short term teaching assignment in Alaska during the 1989/90 school year, returning to Sioux City.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Chapter 502 Morningside Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a past Matron, the Daughters of the Nile, the Shrine Auxiliary and the South Sioux City Eagles Club.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Keith and Karen of Marco Island, Fla. and Gregory and Kevin Anne of New Orleans, La.; a daughter and her husband, Deborah and Jack Barger of Hooper, Neb.; five grandchildren, Aimee Brinson, Kathryn and Marc Flaugh, Regina and Dylan Rohde; her special friend, Art Kahler of Sioux City; and two half brothers, Duane Evans of Sacramento, Calif. and Dwight Evans of Camarillo, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Robert Evans.

Pallbearers will be Duane and Dwight Evans, Marc Flaugh, Dylan Rohde, Ward Butcher, Chuck Swan and Jack Barger.

Memorials may be directed to the Amytrothic Lateral Sclerosis Association.

Hazel W. Hawthorn

Hazel Waples Hawthorn, 104, of Sioux City died Monday, April 20, 1998, the the Countryside Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William H. Steward and the Rev. Sheryl K. Ashley officiating. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Center Township Cemetery, near Castana, Iowa. There will be no visitation. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Hawthorn was born July 21, 1983, in Castana, the daughter of Wm. Henry Jr. and Nora (Livengood) Waples. She graduated from Castana High School and Morningside College. She also studied at Iowa State College and the University of Wisconsin. She taught in public schools in Castana, Sergeant Bluff and Sioux City for many years.

She married Horace B. Hawthorn on Sept. 21, 1916, in Castana. The couple lived in Madison, Wis., Ames, Iowa, Akron, Ohio, Castana as well as Sioux City following their teaching careers. He died Feb. 17, 1981, in Sioux City.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Rebekah Circle, Goodwill Auxiliary, American Association of University Women, The Retired Teachers, Morningside Garden Club, Castana Thursday Club, Castana American Legion Auxiliary and the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.

Survivors include two daughters, Miriam Baker Nye of Moville, Iowa and Clarice Watson of Eugene, Ore.; a son and his wife, Duane and Charlotte Hawthorn of Sioux City; a brother, Eldon Waples of Castana; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Violet and Beulah Waples; a brother, Clair Waples; two granddaughters, Barbara and Paulette Hawthorn; and a son-in-law, Dr. John A. Nye.

Memorials may be directed to Grace United Methodist Church.

Verda M. Peterson
Verda M. Peterson, 73, of Sioux City died Monday, April 20, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a sudden illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with Captain Ray Tuttle, of the Salvation Army, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. led by Major Roger Quinn of the Salvation Army, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Peterson was born March 11, 1925, in Hornick, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Mary (Weber) Hanner. She was raised in Hornick and graduated from Holly Springs High School in Holly Springs, Iowa, in 1943. She moved to Sioux City in 1943, where she was employed with the Sioux City Battery Factory for several years.

She married Clifford Peterson on April 2, 1955, in Le Mars, Iowa.

She was a member of the Salvation Army and the Home League Ladies. She was a volunteer for the Salvation Army Corps and played the piano for many of the corps activities. She enjoyed her flower garden and baking.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Dean and Eldon and his wife Paula, all of Sioux City; two daughters, Kathleen and Judy and her husband Gary Gammel of Victorville, Calif.; six grandchildren, Katelyn, Mitchell, Cory, Kelly, Salina and David; a sister, Leona Sander of Sioux City and a brother, Robert Hanner of Hornick.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Shirley.

Memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army Corps.

Winifred B. Miller
Winifred B. Miller, 81, of Sioux City died Monday in Cuero, Texas.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Vistiation will be from 3 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Ethel E. Matthews
Ethel E. Matthews, 90, of Sioux City died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at the Embassy Care Center in Sergeant Bluff.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel M. Greving, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., all at the Larkin Morningside Funeral Home.

Mrs. Matthews was born March 22, 1908, in Vermillion, S.D., the daughter of Samuel and Rebecca (Hemmings) Bursell. She was raised in Chambers, Neb., and moved to Sioux City in 1926.

She married John F. Matthews on April 25, 1929, in Spencer, Iowa. She was employed with Cudahy Packing Company and then in the diet kitchen of St. Joseph Hospital.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Patricia and Trino Calvillo of Sioux City and Donna and Mike Watkins of West Des Moines; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers, Charles, Sam, William, Jack, Alfred, Herbert, Lyman and Fred Bursell; and four sisters, Della Armstrong, Mae Baker, Mary Farewell and Jane Hansen.

Memorials in her name may be directed to the Eduction Endowment Fund for Immaculate Conception School.

Pallbearers will be Patrick and Matthew Watkins, Michael Calvillo, John Staber, Michael Parezo and Richard Hulce.

Charles W. Crawford
Charles W. Crawford, 76, of Sioux City died Wednesday.
Memorial services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation. The body was cremated. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Lesetta Loeck
RICKETTS, Iowa - Lesetta Loeck, 78, of Ricketts died Tuesday at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak.

Sanfern O. Mangold
CHEROKEE, Iowa - Sanfern Ordell "Sam" Mangold, 90, of Cherokee died Wednesday at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee following a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Presbyterian Church in Cherokee. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Meta Winter
SIBLEY, Iowa - Meta Winter, 95, of Sibley died Tuesday at the Country View Manor in Sibley.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Evangelical Church in Sibley. Burial will be prior to the service in Holman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Walton, Roste and Vogel Funeral Home in Sibley. Visitation will resume from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Sister Ruth Kribell
YANKTON, S.D. - Sister Ruth (Helen Leona) Kribell, 86, of Sacred Heart Monastery in Yankton, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at the monastery.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Bishop Marty Chapel. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Monastery Cemetery. There will be a vesper wake service at 7:30 p.m. today at the chapel. Kostel Funeral Home of Yankton is in charge of the arrangements.

Sister Ruth was born May 21, 1911, near Beresford, S.D., the daughter of Thomas and Helen (McIlvenna) Kribell. She graduated from Brule Valley Rural School and Mount Marty High School. She entered Sacred Heart Monastery in 1930 and made profession as Sister Ruth in 1933. In 1950, she completed a bachlor's degree in chemistry at Marymount College in Saline, Kan. and later earned a master's degree in chemistry at Marquette University. With grants from the National Science Foundation, she did post-graduate summer studies in Seattle, Wash. and Berkley, Calif.

She taught elementary parochial school in Glen Ullin, N.D. and Kranzberg, S.D. She taught chemistry at Cedar Catholic in Hartington, Neb., St. Joseph's in York, Neb. Pius X in Lincoln, Neb. and at O'Gorman in Sioux Falls, S.D. She was also a chemistry instructor and department head at Mount Marty College for 10 years. She taught summer sessions in Mount Angel, Ore. and Crookston, Minn. Following her teaching career, she assisted in the monastery business office for five years and for the last 23 years she was an aide and clerk in the pharmacy department of Sacred Heart Hospital.

She was an active board member of the March of Dimes and was involved with the American Heart Association, receiving its state award for activities in Yankton County.

Survivors include her Benedictine sisters; two sisters, Florence and Sister Blanche, both of Yankton; a brother, Joseph of Sturgis, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters.

Memorials may be directed to the Benedictine Health Foundation or the Sister Blanche Kribell Scholarship at Mount Marty College.

Bonnie L. Voss
EMERSON, Neb. - Bonnie L. Voss, 77, of Emerson died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, the the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Neb. following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson, with the Rev. Don Wilken officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today, and with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Emerson.

Mrs. Voss was born Nov. 26, 1920, in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of Morse and Beatrice (Gough) Gorbett.

She married LeRoy Ronnfeldt in June 1941, in Emerson. He died April 7, 1943. She married Leo Voss on Sept. 4, 1945, in Dallas, Texas. The couple lived on a farm near Emerson before moving to the Heritage of Emerson in February 1998.

Survivor include her husband; three daughters, Bonnie Carver of Norfolk, Neb., Joy Mora of Rockville, Md. and Nancy and her husband Gerry MacDonald of Toronto, Ontario Canada; and two grandchildren, Cambrian and Heath Sivertson.

Memorials in her name may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.

Lois A. Borchers
SENEY, Iowa - Lois A. Borchers, 73, of Seney died Wednesday at her residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church E.L.C.A. in Le Mars, Iowa. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Arnold W. Rongstad
SUTHERLAND, Iowa - Arnold W. Rongstad, 81, of Pharr, Texas, formerly of Sutherland and Larrabee, Iowa, died Tuesday at the Columbia Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sutherland United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Cedar Cemetery at Larrabee, with military rites conducted by the Sutherland American Legion Post 152. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will resume from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Coba A. Gruis
SIBLEY, Iowa - Coba A. Gruis, 78, of Sibley died Tuesday at her residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Reformed Church in Sibley. Burial will be in Holman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Andringa Funeral Home in Sibley.

Kay Ann Wagner
ODEBOLT, Iowa - Kay Ann Wagner, 61, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Odebolt, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at the Hospice Cottage in Omaha.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion, S.D., with the Rev. N. Richard Wiekert officiating. Burial will be in Ahlsborg Cemetery, rural Elk Point, S.D. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church in Omaha.

Mrs. Wagner was born Feb. 7, 1937, in Odebolt, the daughter of William A. and Stella (Manning) Buettner. She graduated from Odebolt High School in 1955 and moved to Omaha in 1956.

She married Donald C. Wagner on April 28, 1962, in Omaha. She was employed with Mutual of Omaha for 21 years, retiring in 1977.

She was a member of St. Timothy's Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband; a sister, Helen Peters of Odebolt; a brother and his wife, Donald and Jane Buettner of Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Joan Stickrod of Omaha; a brother-in-law, Carroll Wagner of Palisade, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Minnie Brink
SHELDON, Iowa - Minnie "Dee" Brink, 83, of Sheldon died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. Gary Vande Kamp officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Mrs. Brink was born March 23, 1915, near Archer, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Josiena (Drost) DeVries. She attended country school and graduated from Archer High School. She attended Sheldon Junior College and the Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught school in Maurice, Iowa.

She married Edwin Brink on June 6, 1940, at Archer. The couple lived in the Maurice area before moving to Paullina, Iowa in 1961. While in Paullina, they owned and operated Brink's Hardware Store, retiring in 1975. He died July 1, 1982, in Paullina. She moved to Sheldon in 1987.

She was a member of Bethel Reformed Church.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Robert and Wilma of Sheldon; a daughter and her husband, Ruth and Tom Abeles of Minneapolis, Minn.; four grandchildren, Kari Duffy, Jari, and Katrina Brink and Christopher Abeles; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Joe DeVries of Sheldon.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
