William E. Craig
William E. Craig, 74, of Sioux City died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at a Sioux City care center following a brief illness.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Glenn Schacht, of Riverside Lutheran Church officiating. American Legion Monahan Post 64 will conducted military rites. Berkemier Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Craig was born Dec. 22, 1923, in Dakota City, the son of William and Stella Craig. He moved to Sioux City with his family as a child and attended Sioux City public schools. He served in the U.S Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

He married Mary Roberta Lester on March 13, 1946, in Albuquerque, N.M. The couple made their home in Sioux City.

He was employed with Macks Transfer Company, P.I.E. and Sioux Transportation Company for 45 years as a truck driver.

He was of the Lutheran faith. He was a member of the American Legion Monahan Post 64, Disabled American Veterans Post 54 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1973.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Robert and Lori and Doug and Teresa, all of Portland, Ore.; four daughters, Kathy Williams and Karen Craig, both of Sioux City, Janice Engelkes of Everly, Iowa, and Kimberly Craig; three brothers, Floyd of Shady Cove, Ore., Charles of Gervais, Ore., and Richard of Johnson Creek, Penn.; three sisters, Joan Finch of Washegal, Wash., Stella Madsen of Sioux City and Darlyn Collins of Eugene, Ore.; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Danny and Jeffrey; a brother, James; three sisters, Bernita Craig, Betty Martine and Patricia Lucart; and his parents.

Hartley O. Parker
Hartley O. Parker, 73, of Sioux City died of a heart attack Saturday, April 25, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. E.D. Pappadackis officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Monahan Post 64. Visitation will be from 1 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Parker was born Jan. 13, 1925, in Anthon, Iowa, the son of Alvin F. and Nellie (Dicus) Parker. He moved to Sioux City in the early 1930s.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater with the submarine service.

He married Marjorie M. Turek on March 20, 1946, in Sioux City.

Mr. Parker was employed as a self-employed construction worker, operating Parker Construction, home builders and remodelers.

He was a member of National Homebuilders Association.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Dan and Mary of Sioux City; two daughters and their husbands, Diane and George Beagle and Ruth and John Bottjen, all of Sioux City; two sisters, Marvel Wright and Norma and her husband Neal Byrne, all of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Shelli, Jody, Sherri, Misty, Jennifer and Kelly; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and a brother.

Don R. Leapley
Don Ross Leapley, 70, of Sioux City died Sunday, April 26, 1998, in Sioux City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul G. Sieveking officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Mr. Leapley was born Nov. 5, 1927, in Sioux City, the son of Floyd H. and Alice (Ross) Leapley. He lived in Laurel, Neb. briefly before returning to Sioux City.

He married Betty M. Hoffman on June 27, 1948.

He was employed with Wincharger, then with Home Federal Bank in 1962, which became First Federal, retiring as vice president in November 1992.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he was a past chairman of the congregation, and the Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Vicky and DeWayne Kinney of Lincoln, Neb.; two sons and their wives, Bradley and Dawn D. of O'Fallon, Mo., and Kurt and Margaret A. of Mount Prospect, Ill.; a brother and his wife, Neil and Lois of Onawa, Iowa; six grandchildren, Eric, Chad, Swanna, Don and David Kinney and Michael Leapley; a great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers will be Eric, Chad, Don and David Kinney, Lonnie Stuhr and Keith Hawkins.

Esther Bayles-Truesdell
Esther Bayles-Truesdell, 86, of Sioux City died Saturday, April 25, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Marvin Mueller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Bayles-Truesdell was born July 17, 1911, in Elgin Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of Frederic and Ruby (Albright) Wood.

She graduated from Le Mars High School, Le Mars, Iowa, and attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for three years. She then attended Morningside College, where she received her bachlor of science degree in sociology. She attended the University of South Dakota and received her master's degree in sociology and education in 1958 and her endorsement in guidance and counseling in 1959. She continued graduate work at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo., and Iowa State University in Iowa City, where she completed requirements for an endorsement as a school psychologist in Iowa.

She was employed with the Sioux City School District as a teacher and principal for many years, with 27 years at Longfellow Elementary School. She retired in 1976, and was employed with Job Service of Iowa.

She married W. Wallace Bayles in June 1935 in Vermillion, S.D. He died November 1966. She married Allen Ray Truesdell in March 1977, in Dickenson County. He died December 1981.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Mizpah Shrine 13 Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, where she was a past priestess, supreme deputy and Instructor. She was a member and past Matron of the Rose Croix Chapter 400 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She served as a delegate for the National Education Association and the Iowa State Education Association and served on the Sioux City Education Association Board. She was associated with the American Association of University Women, where she held many offices, and with Alpha Delta Kappa and Delta Kappa Gamma National Honorary Sororities, where she held various offices.

Survivors include four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Wood of Osceola, Iowa, Eunice Wood-Duncanson of Merced, Calif., Adele Wood of Sioux City and Fleta Williams-Stallworth of Dallas, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred, Glenn and Paul Wood; and two sisters, Helen Ericson and Clara May Harker.

Memorials in her name may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association Big Sioux Chapter.

Donald L. Simpson
Donald L. Simpson, 59, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, April 25, 1998, in Roanoke.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. today at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Chapel in Roanoke, with the Rev. Diane Scribner Clevenger officiating. Visitation with the family will follow the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Simpson earned an associate degree in computer science from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He was a former employee of Woodbury County Care Facility in Sioux City. He moved to Roanoke Valley in 1990, where he was employed as a rehabilitation aide at Hegira House.

Survivors include his wife, Mary J. Simpson; a daughter, Megan Marie Simpson of Washington D.C.; a stepdaughter, Audrey Dean Crane of Sioux City; and two grandchildren, Armando and Christian Crane.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Elsie (Chancellor) Simpson; four brothers, John, Charles, William and Father Allen; a sister, Margery, and three siblings in infancy.

Memorials may be directed to the Hegira House in Roanoke, Va.

John M. Mulhall
John M. Mulhall, 56, of Sioux City died Sunday in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Robert J. Luksan
Robert J. Luksan, 73, of Sioux City died Sunday, April 26, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Edward M. Girres, pastor of the Cathedral of the Epiphany, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 6:30 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mr. Luksan was born Sept. 14, 1924, in Sioux City, the son of Oliver and Gertrude (Garrigan) Luksan.

He married Charlene Mahon on Sept. 3, 1955, in Sioux City. She died April 3, 1981, in Sioux City.

He was employed as a general laborer with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and for IBP., retiring in 1986. He moved to Des Moines 18 months ago.

He was a member of the Cathedral of the Epiphany and a former member of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Thomas and Vicki of North Platte, Neb., and Michael and Carol of West Des Moines; a brother, William T. of Golden Valley, Minn.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers will be Bob Thompson, Bob Fleming, Tom Geer, John Tritz and John Keane.

Leona O. Fields
Leona O. Fields, 79, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Sunday at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Patty Bishop
Patty Pilgrim Bishop, 50, of Dale City, Va., formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at Walter Reed Army Medcial Center.

Services and burial were held in Virginia. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux City. There will be no visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the local arrangements.

Milton J. Conway
Milton J. Conway, 78, of Sioux City died Sunday, April 26, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael Catholic Church, with the Rev. Lawrence McCarty officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 9 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Conway was born May 27, 1919, in Westfield, Iowa, the son of William and Camilla (Martin) Conway. He was raised in Westfield and graduated from Westfield High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He moved to Sioux City in 1947.

He married Roberta Horne on March 29, 1948, in Sioux City. She died June 23, 1995, in Sioux City.

He was employed with Swift and Company for 40 years.

He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, American Legion Monahan Post 64, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 54 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Johnson of Sioux City; a sister, Catherine McGillen of Grosse Pointe, Mich.; and three grandchildren, Andrew, Meggan and Joseph.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Martin, John, Raymond and Louis.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Michael and Sean McGillen, Jim and Dennis Conway and Bob and Mike Mycka.
