Agnes (Staniflav) Phister, 58, of Buffalo, N.Y., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, in Buffalo.

Services were held Saturday, April 25, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Buffalo. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Charlotte M. (Strock) Riester, 86, formerly of Sioux City, died of heart failure Friday, April 24, 1998, in Tacoma, Wash.

A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of Mornigside Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with Pastor Kevin Lee officiating. Burial will be in Britton, S.D. Franzen Funeral Home of Britton is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Riester was born Sept. 5, 1911, in Hartington, Neb., the daughter of Frank and Meranda Strock. She attended school in Sioux City and nursing school in Minneapolis, Minn.

She served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a register nurse. She continued in the nursing profession until retiring.

Survivors include a sister, Ruby (Strock) Jensen of Sioux City; six nephews, Carl, Keith, Kenneth and Loiue Jensen of Sioux City, William Strock of Burlington, Wis., and Joseph Strock of Knoxville, Tenn.; a niece, Phillis Bjorkman of Tacoma, Wash.; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee, and a brother, Carl.

Saul N. Ginsburg
Saul N. Ginsburg, 86, formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, April 13, 1998, in Tucson, Ariz., following a lengthy illness.

Burial was in Mount Sinai Section of Forrest Lawn Cemetery at Los Angeles, Calif.

Mr. Ginsburg was born Jan. 4, 1912, in Sioux City.

He was in the fruit and vegetable business for many years in St. Paul, Minn. In 1931 he moved to California, where he was employed in the construction business.

Survivors include three sons; two brothers, Maurice of Minneapolis and Henry of Sioux City; and a sister, Rachel Rosenthal of Kansas City, Mo.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe; and a sister, Sally.

Gerald H. Green
Gerald H. "Jerry" Green, 65, of Sioux City died Sunday, April 26, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.

Private memorial services will be at a later date. The body was cremated. Berkemier Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Green was born March 13, 1933, in Onawa, Iowa, the son of Henry and Nora (Stevens) Green. He moved with his family to Sioux City as a child and attended Sioux City Public Schools.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He married Shirley Zeitler on Dec. 22, 1962, in Dakota City. The couple made their home in Sioux City.

He was employed as a truck driver for various trucking companies.

He was a volunteer for the South Sioux City Animal Control and an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Anthony Green and his wife, Leslie, of Golden Valley, Minn., and Lanny Schultz of Florida; a daughter, Angela Green of Sioux City; three brothers and their wives, Jim and Terri, Bill and Ann and Charles and Carolyn, all of Sioux City; two sisters, Joan Baldwin and Kathleen Boggs, both of Sioux City; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joe; and two sisters, Margaret Rodman and Pauline "Peg" Yanak.

John M. Mulhall
John M. Mulhall, 56, of Sioux City died Sunday, April 26, 1998, in Storm Lake, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas E. Geelan officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mr. Mulhall was born Oct. 30, 1941, in Pittsburg, Penn., the son of John L. and Mary (Manning) Mulhall. He graduated from Sioux City Heelan High School in 1960. He attended St. John's College in Collegeville, Minn., and graduated from the University of Minnesota.

He was employed as a sales representative for a pharmaceutical company.

Survivors include his father of Sioux City; a brother, Mark M. of Yorba Linda, Calif.; a sister and her husband, Martha and Richard Kleiner of Littleton, Colo.; and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Rena Rocklin
Rena Rocklin, 83, of Sioux City died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Mount Sinai Cemetery, with Mr. James Sherman, spiritual leader of Congregation Beth Shalom, officiating. There will be no visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Rocklin was born July 4, 1914, in Chicago, the daughter of Isador and Eva (Greenspann) Marco. She was raised in Chicago and graduated from Hyde Park High School. She attended the University of Chicago and graduated from Northwestern University in Evenston, Ill.

She taught high school in Chicago and worked there as a social worker.

She married Isadore J. Rocklin on Nov. 5, 1939, in Chicago. The couple moved to Sioux City. He died Feb. 26, 1993, in Palm Springs, Calif.

She was employed as a substitute teacher for the Sioux City public schools for several years. She also recorded numerous books for the blind in Iowa.

She was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom.

Survivors include a son and his wife, James and Fern of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Margo and Ross; a sister, Estelle Schafer of
Montgomery, Ala.; a brother-in-law, Sam Shapiro of Sioux City; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dave and Hannah Hurwitz of California; a sister-in-law, Hannah Rocklin of Fairfax, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials in her name may be directed to the American Dialysis Association.

Leona O. Fields
Leona O. Fields, 79, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Sunday, April 26, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Floyd E. Brown officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Fields was born May 24, 1918, in Jefferson City, Mo., the daughter of Harry and Olivia (Street) Smith. She moved with her family to Sioux City in 1923. She had lived in Stockton, Calif. for a brief time before returning to Sioux City in the early 1940s.

She married Richard A. Fields on Sept. 12, 1941, in Sioux City. He died Nov. 19, 1990, in Sioux City.

She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where she was an usher and active in the Missions Group. She also served on the Board of Christian Education at the church. She was a board member at the Sanford Center and a member of the NAACP. She was involved in many other community activties.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Susan Fenceroy-Tillman and James Tillman Sr., of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Danny and Jean and James and Bonnie, all of Sioux City; her mother, Olivia Bolton of Sioux City; four brothers, Harry Smith of Los Angeles, Calif., Joseph Davis and his wife, Julia, of Harbor City, Calif., Arnold Davis and his wife, Jane, of Sioux City and Russell Davis of Fremont, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, James Jr., Jermaine, Christina, Brittany, Lucas and Adam Fields, James Jr. and Erica Tillman, Mischalet Fenceroy, Nichole Gibson and DeAnna and Eric Schenzel; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Pallbearers will be James Tillman Sr., Andrew Pearson, James Fenceroy, Randy Garr, Richard Fulton, Tod Garr, Steve Schmitt and Larry Lauderdale Sr.

Laura G. Eggers
Laura G. Eggers, 78, of Sioux City died Saturday, April 25, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Memorials services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Ronald T. Allin, interim pastor, officiating. The body was cre-mated. There will be no visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Eggers was born May 28, 1919, in Sac City, Iowa, the daughter of William Carl and Barbara Ann (McCrea) Putbrese.

She was raised on the family farm in Sac City. She graduated from Sac City High School and Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she received her elementary teaching certificate.

She married Griffin T. Eggers on Sept. 13, 1942, in Lake View, Iowa. The couple lived in Audubon, Iowa, from 1946 to 1963. They then moved to Fargo, N.D., where they lived from 1963 to 1968. They moved to Sioux City in 1968.

She taught school in Boxholm, Gray, Exira and Audubon, Iowa.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the PEO Chapter EY and the Tri-Delta Sorority. She enjoyed playing bridge and golfing.

Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Dr. Gary and JoEllen of Los Altos, Calif., and Captain Bill and Ann of Vail, Colo.; and two grandchildren, Dana and Garrett Eggers.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Velma Ostrus.

Memorials in her name may be directed to the Board of Deacons, First Presbyterian Church.

Marlon D. Mitchell
MACY, Neb. - Marlon D. "Money" Mitchell, 38, of Macy died Sunday in Macy.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Christine Mitchell residence in Macy, weather premitting; otherwise services will be at the Alfred W. Gilpin Community Center in Macy. Burial will be in Omaha Indian Cemetery. Visitation will be today through Thursday morning at the Christine Mitchell residence. Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Mitchell was born Jan. 29, 1960, in Winnebago, Neb., the son of Casper and Christine (Mitchell) Tyndall. He graduated from school in Macy.

He was employed as a heavy equipment operator for the Omaha Tribe.

He was a member of the Mormon Church and the Native American Church.

Survivors include his mother of Macy; four daughters, Tema Mitchell, Angelia Grant, Corrine Wilkinson and Marnea Robinson, all of Macy; a grandson, Shai Hamilton; seven sisters, Ruth Thomas, Antoinette Baxter, Dawn Robinson, Georgia Webster, Becky and Vicki Tyndall, all of Macy, and Kendra Tyndall of Arizona; and four brothers, Thomas, Troy Sr. and Orrin Mitchell and Tim Grant, all of Macy.

He was preceded in death by his father and two infant sons, Babe and Dale Mitchell.

Shirley Smith Berends

CLIMBING HILL, Iowa - Shirley Mae Smith Berends, 68, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Climbing Hill, died of a heart attack Tuesday, April 14, 1998, in Las Vegas.

Services were held April 18 at Bunker Chapel in Las Vegas, with Pastor John Bagwell officiating. Burial was April 20 in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City.

Mrs. Berends was born June 14, 1929, at Climbing Hill, the daughter of Wesley and Hilda (Boysen Hargens) Smith. She graduated from Climbing Hill High School in 1947.

She married Everett J. Berends Aug. 4, 1957, at Climbing Hill.

She was employed by Iowa Public Service Company in Sioux City until 1959. The couple then was stationed at Williams and Luke Air Force Bases in Arizona and at an Air Force Base on Okinawa before moving to Nellis Air Force Base at Las Vegas in 1965. She was employed in the Transportation Department at Nellis Air Force Base, retiring in March 1995.

Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, James and Teresa Berends of Las Vegas; two brothers, Darrell Smith of Sioux City and Orlan Hargens of Lincoln, Neb., and a sister, Geraldine Jacobson of Austin, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Warren Smith, and a sister, Erma Cooley.

Bobby Gray
ONAWA, Iowa - Robert "Bobby" Steele Gray, 19, of Onawa died Monday near Sloan, Iowa.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Onawa. Burial will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa is in charge of the arrangements.

Richard D. Hayes
LYONS, Neb. - Richard Dean Hayes, 63, of Lyons died Friday, April 24, 1998, at Pender Hospital in Pender, Neb.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 27, at First Presbyterian Church in Lyons, with the Rev. Kirk Erwin officiating. Burial was in Lyons Cemetery. Piper Funeral Home of Lyons was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Hayes was born March 17, 1935, in rural Decatur, Neb., the son of Robert and Dorothy (Kempcke) Hayes. He attended rural School District 20.

He married Colleen McManigal on Feb. 27, 1959, in Homer, Neb.

He was employed as a truck driver. He first worked for Beldon Redding in Lyons and retired from IBP after 24 years.

He was baptized in the Presbyterian faith.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Allen Dean and Jill of Sycamore, Ill., and Ricky Lee and Kim of Spirit Lake, Iowa; a daughter, Kimberly Kay Hayes of Lincoln, Neb.; four grandchildren, Tyler Ann, Jami Elizabeth, Teesha Kalena and Chance-Michael; his mother of Lyons; eight sisters, Betty Peck of Hooper, Neb., Peggy Goetzinger of Boone, Iowa, Marilyn Whitsell of Topeka, Kan., Karen and Bonnie Hayes, both of Lyons, Patty Maxwell of Webster, Wis., Nancy Hayes of Decatur, Neb., and Ginny Hemphill of Staplehurst, Neb.; three brothers, Bob of Dakota City, Russel of Dallas, Texas, and Larry of Lyons; a sister-in-law, Connie Hayes; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Norman; and an infant sibling.

Pallbearers were Mark Sunderman, Michael Rowe, Nicholas and Gary Hayes, Daryle and Duane Lahrs, Kevin and Scott McManigal and Jason Reese.

Stella Verbrugge
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Stella Verbrugge, 88, of Orange City died Sunday, April 26, 1998, at Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Jeff Sajdak officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Mrs. Vebrugge was born March 3, 1910, near Hospers, Iowa, the daughter of Arie and Mattie (Reitsema) Kreykes. She was raised in the Hospers areas.

She married John Hilbert Noteboom on March 8, 1932, in Hospers. The couple farmed in the Alton, Iowa, area. He died Aug. 25, 1961, in Orange City.

She moved into Orange City, where she was employed as a nurse's aid at Heritage House Nursing Home.

She married Nick Verbrugge on June 1, 1976, in Sanborn, Iowa. The couple made their home in Orange City. He died March 13, 1998, in Orange City.

She was a member of Immanuel Christian Reformed Church and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading.

Survivor include a daughter and her husband, Lenora and Forrest Hubers of Orange City; a son, Norvin Noteboom of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Myrna and Henry Koldenhoven of Sanborn and Arlene and Andrew Haarsma of Hartley, Iowa; two stepsons and their wives, Wallace and LaVonne Verbrugge of Sheldon, Iowa, and Harvey and Linda Verbrugge of Sanborn; a stepdaughter-in-law, Velma Verbrugge of Sanborn; six grandchildren, Robert and Jason Hubers, Fonda Hulstein, Anna Zahniser and Heather and Jayme Noteboom; 15 stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 19 stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Hattie Woudstra of Orange City; and a brother-in-law, Elmer Wiersema of Orange City.

She was preceded in death by a stepson, James Verbrugge; a stepdaughter-in-law, Glenda Verbrugge; an infant stepgreat-grandson; three brothers, William, John and Joe Kreykes; and a sister, Jeanetta Wiersema.

Louis A. Toel
LE MARS, Iowa - Louis Anthon Toel, 82, of Le Mars died Monday, April 27, 1998, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Larry Fett officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mr. Toel was born July 9, 1915, in Brunsville, Iowa, the son of Fred and Margaretha (Scheff) Toel. He moved with his family to Hinton, Iowa, as a child. He attended school at Hinton. He began farming at the Martin Muecke farm near Hinton.

He married Louise Beitelspacher on Nov. 9, 1941, in Grant Township. The couple continued to farm near Hinton until 1948, when they moved to a farm near Struble, Iowa. They retired in 1989 and moved to Le Mars. She died Aug. 9, 1993.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and served as a trustee for the Elgin 2 School District. He was active with the Floyd Valley Watershed Association and had been a seed corn salesman for many years. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and woodworking.

Survivors include three sons and their wives, Randall and LaRae, Dennis and Desiree and Wayne and Karen, all of Le Mars; a brother and his wife, Wilbur and Olga of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Carman McNaughton and Kimberly, Michael, Darrick, Ryan and Dawn Toel; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Roger, and a daughter-in-law, Jean Toel.

Pallbearers will be Darrick, Mike, Ryan and David Toel and Leonard and Dean Beitelspacher.

Dr. Donald Dendinger
YANKTON, S.D. - Dr. Donald Charles Dendinger, 75, of Yankton died Monday, April 27, 1998, at his residence.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton, with the Rev. Rodney Farke officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. and a Scripture service at 8 p.m., at Kostel Funeral Home in Yankton.

Dr. Dendinger was born March 6, 1923, in Norfolk, Neb., the son of Frances and Lavina (Beste) Dendinger. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Norfolk and from Creighton University School of Dentistry in 1946.

He married Edna Smith on Feb. 19, 1944, in Omaha, Neb. They moved to Yankton in 1946, where he established his practice.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957, then returned to his practice in Yankton. He retired in 1983, and had attended classes at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D.

He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, the Legion of Mary, the Toastmasters, the Knights of Columbus, where he was a Fouth Degree member and faithful navigator, and the South Dakota Dental Association, where he served as past president. He served as past president of Pierre Fauchard International Academy and on the advisory board of Creighton Dental School and was active in the Creighton Alumni Association.

He served on the South Dakota State Board of Dentistry, Arts Association Board, South Dakota Humanities Board, Community Concert Board, Yankton's Park and Library Boards and the Right to Life.

He was recognized as Yankton's Citizen of the Year in 1985 and received the Governor's Volunteer Award for the Arts and Creighton University's Merit Award. He was also a prison volunteer.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Dr. William and Cyndi of Vermillion; eight daughters, Mary Pat and her husband, Don Guier, and Jeanne and her husband, Phil Schreier, all of Omaha, Kaye and her husband, Steve Myers, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Margaret and her husband, Thomas Holland, of Chamberlain, S.D., Dr. Joan Dendinger of Yucuipa, Calif., Susan and her husband, Larry Krisl, of Littleton, Colo., and Alice Dendinger and Barb Rankin, both of Austin, Texas; 20 grandchildren; and a sister, Monica Kwid of Stanton, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and an infant daughter.

Pallbearers will be Paul and Luke Schreier, Ben Myers, Lance Krisl, Thomas Dendinger and Joseph Holland.

Clara L. Kroll
MAPLETON, Iowa - Clara L. Kroll, 90, of Mapleton died Monday at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township, rural Charter Oak, Iowa. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Blanche Barry
DANBURY, Iowa - Blanche Barry, 87, of Sun City West, Ariz., formerly of Danbury, died Sunday, April 26, 1998, in Peoria, Ariz.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury, with the Rev. LeRoy Suentjens officiating. Burial will be in Danbury Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Armstrong Funeral Home of Danbury and Mapleton, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Barry was born Feb. 6, 1911, in Milbank, S.D., the daughter of Casper and Josephine (Turner) Amsden.

She married Vincent Barry in 1933, in Danbury. The couple lived in Danbury until moving to Kansas City, in 1956. They later moved to Clarinda, Iowa. He died in 1978. She had lived in Sun City West for 22 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Sister Marilyn Barry of Taylor, S.C., and Dr. Suzanne Ellis of Kansas City, Kan.; two sons, Don of Richardson, Texas, and Tim of Peoria, Ariz.; three sisters, Agnes Bloomhall, Dorothy Storm and Delores Youngdahl; a brother, Donald Amsden; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Dorothy Hattendorf
OCHEYEDAN, Iowa - Dorothy Hattendorf, 86, of Spencer, Iowa, formerly of Sibley and Ocheyedan, Iowa, died Monday at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan. Burial will be in Ocheyedan Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Andringa Funeral Home in Sibley.
