George Olsen Jr.
George L. Olsen Jr., 68, of Sioux City died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at his residence following a brief illness.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Fred M. Penner, pastor of Glendale Baptist Church, and the Rev. Dwight Gernand officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Monahan Post 64. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., a Masonic service at 7 p.m. then an Order of the Eastern Star service, all at the funeral home.
Mr. Olsen was born Aug. 18, 1929, in Los Angeles, Calif., the son of George L. and Mary L. (Otacar) Olsen Sr. He moved to Sioux City at the age of 14. He graduated from Leeds High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He married Jeanette M. Olney on May 23, 1952, in Sioux City. He was employed as a printer in Sioux City for 25 years. He was later employed as an insurance manager with Dakota County Bank in South Sioux City for 10 years. He retired in February 1992.
He was a member of Glendale Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, the Triangle Lodge 643, where he was a past Master, the Sioux City Scottish Rite-32 degree KCCH, the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, the Order of the Eastern Star 540 and the Shrine Hospital Dads.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, George "Mike" and his wife Linda of Sioux City and Terry M. of Lakewood, Colo.; a daughter and her husband, Cynthia M. and David Grause of Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Joyce and Bud Rasmussen of Phoenix, Ariz.; his stepmother, Evelyn Dreas of South Sioux City; and four grandchildren, Douglas and Stephanie Olsen, Lynette and Heather Grause.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers will be John and Brent Downs, Larry Manker, Stuart Oliver, Jerry Baldwin and John Meier.
Memorials may be directed to the Abu Bekr Transportation Fund.
Thad W. Stephens
Thad W. Stephens, 29, of Sioux City died Monday, April 6, 1998, in Sioux City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mark Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John Hagberg officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 6 p.m. with the Rev. John Hagberg officiating, at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.
Mr. Stephens was born Jan. 22, 1969, in Sioux City, the son of Robert and Mae (Ashcraft) Stephens.
He married Michelle Oehlerich on Nov. 17, 1989, in Elk Point, S.D. He was employed as a laborer with Stone Container Corporation.
He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and the SAHA Hockey League. He was also a youth hockey and tee-ball coach.
Survivors include his wife; a son Gage of Sioux City; a daughter, Cooper of Sioux City; his parents; two brothers and their wives, Robert Jr. and Ann and Ross Arthur and Jenny, all of Sioux City; paternal grandmother, Ethel Stephens of Sioux City; father and mother-in-law, Don and Kay Oehlerich of Sioux City; and 13 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kaylee, paternal grandfather and maternal grandparents.
Memorials in his name may be directed to either St. Mark Lutheran Church or SAHA Hockey League.
Mary J. Sweeney
Mary J. Sweeney, 87, of South Sioux City died Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Larkin Morningside Funeral Home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Lawrence Ahlers
REMSEN, Iowa - Lawrence Ahlers, 100, of Remsen died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, at the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Thomas Hart officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Mr. Ahlers was born April 25, 1897, in rural Granville, Iowa, the son of William and Rose (Haupert) Ahlers. He was raised in Granville and attended St. Joseph School in Granville. He entered the U.S. Army in 1918, and served in the Medical Corps at Camp Fort Dodge, Iowa. Following his discharge, he attended Nettleton Business School in Sioux Falls, S.D. After graduating, he moved to Oregon and worked until 1925, when he returned to the Granville area and farmed.
He married Olivia Sudtelgte on Feb. 8, 1927, in Remsen. The couple farmed near Granville until 1929, when they moved to a farm near Remsen. They retired and moved into Remsen in 1956. They entered Happy Siesta in 1993. She died Feb. 15, 1996.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Knight of Columbus and the American Legion Post 220. He was a former member of St. Mary's advisory board and the Board of Trustees for Meadow Township for many years.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Ervin and JoAnn of Remsen; three daughters, Mary Ann and her husband Doanld Garvin of Fulda, Minn., Lorraine and her husband Mike Pohlen of Eden Prairie, Minn. and LaDonna Ahlers of Omaha, Neb.; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; a sister, Isabelle Thier of Adrian, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Clara Ahlers of Worthington, Minn.
He was preceded in death by 10 brothers, Henry, John, Joseph, Michael, William Jr., Anton, Rev. Arnold, Benjamin, Albert and Raymond; four sisters, Anna Schuver, Adelaide, as a child, Rose Vortherms and Ida Vortherms; a granddaughter, Mary Pohlen; and a great-grandson.
Pallbearers will be Keith and Ken Ahlers, Jim and Joe Garvin, Bill and Steve Pohlen.
Gunnard J. Carlson
PIERSON, Iowa - Gunnard J. Carlson, 86, of Pierson died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab. Center in Correctionville, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Pierson United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Keith Pals officiating. Burial will be in Grand Meadow Cemetery, Washta, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Earnest-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa.
Mr. Carlson was born May 20, 1911, in Hartford, Conn., the son of John E. and Vendela (Bjorkman) Carlson.
He married Mildred Higginbotham on Jan. 10, 1934, in Onawa, Iowa. He was a life long resident of the Kingsley-Pierson area. The couple lived on the same farm since 1935. He retired from farming in 1981. She died Jan. 25, 1987. He entered the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab. Center in March 1995.
Survivors include four daughters, Marjorie and her husband Roger Irwin of Remsen, Iowa, Marlene and her husband Keith Walker of Cherokee, Iowa, Mary Ellen and her husband Mike Melnarik of Cicero, Ind. and Kay Carlson of Storm Lake, Iowa; two sons and their wives, Bob and Judy of Quimby, Iowa and Jim and Aina of Cincinnati, Ohio; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Stolberg of Fort Worth, Texas; a brother and his wife, Elmer and Marion of Hartford, Conn.; and a sister-in-law, Edna Carlson of Kingsley.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Harry.
Kenneth L. Metcalf
HOLLY SPRINGS, Iowa - Kenneth L. Metcalf, 83, of Holly Springs died unexpectedly Monday, April 6, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Chirsty, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home in Sioux City, with the Rev. Terrie Lillie, pastor of Central Baptist Church in Sioux City, officiating. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery at Holly Springs. Visitation will be from noon to 8:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Metcalf was born July 29, 1914, in Holly Springs, the son of Leonard and Cora (Cox) Metcalf. He gradauted from Holly Springs High School in 1932, where he played baseball and basketball.
He married Geraldine Lillie on Jan. 7, 1937, in Elk Point, S.D. He farmed and drove stock and grain trucks for over 20 years. He was active in sports and participated on town teams.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Dennis and Beverly of Dallas, Texas; three daughters and their husbands, Avalee and Bud Horn of Newport Beach, Calif., Cheryl and Terry VanCleve of Ralston, Neb. and Corene and Milt Aunan of Urbandale, Iowa; a sister, Fern Chilton of Fullerton, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Michelle, Denise, Mike, Tim, Troy, Tamra, Amy, Jana, Kari and Laura; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
