Charles B. Barber
Charles Benjamin Barber, 80, of Port Lavaca, Texas, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, in Port Lavaca.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Richardson Funeral Home in Port Lavaca, with the Rev. David Bush officiating. Burial will be in Olivia Community Cemetery. Visitation was Friday.
Mr. Barber was born June 25, 1918, in Jackson, Neb., the son of Benjamin Barber and Stella (Baney) Barber-Stolzenburg.
He was a retired county employee with Calhoun County Precinct 1.
Survivors include his wife, Faye (Graham) Barber; four daughters, Ronna Chase and Joanne Kunzie, both of Glendale, Ariz., Wendy Rogers and Teresa Garner, both of Port Lavaca; three sons, Charles Lauritsen of Port Lavaca, Michael Lauritsen of Sergeant Bluff and Steven Lauritsen of Alpine, Calif.; a sister, Mary Hamar Forbes of South Sioux City; two brothers, Gerald Barber of Remsen, Iowa, and Edgar Barber of Long Island, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Eunice Hall; and a brother, Clifford Barber.
Pallbearers will be Lefty Saenz, Dennis Williamson, Joe Del Bosque, Joel Gonzales and Chester Williams.
Memorials may be directed to Hospital Welcome Lodge of San Antonio, Texas.
Gussie Bernstein
Gussie Bernstein, 87, of Sioux City died Thursday Aug. 13, 1998, at a Sioux City retirement community following a long illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Sunday at Congregation Beth Shalom with Rabbi Yossi Zylberberg officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Bernstein was born April 3, 1911, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Morris and Rachael (Ellowitz) Rosenberg. She married Samuel Bernstein on Aug. 20, 1930, in Brooklyn. They lived in Brooklyn, Iowa, before moving to Sioux City in 1941. He died Aug. 15, 1997 in Sioux City.
She was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom and was a member of Hadassah and the Women's League of the former Shaare Zion Synagogue, having served as treasurer for both organizations.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Jack and Gail and Norman and Sheila, all of Dakota Dunes; a daughter, Elaine Berlind of Mount Kisco, N.Y.; a brother and his wife, Alex and Belle Rosenberg of Long Island, N.Y.; a sister and her husband, Henrietta and Isadore Friedman of New York; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Betty Rosenberg, Pauline Kashinsky, Jean Rosen, and Lottie Siedman; and a grandson, Matthew.
Memorials in her name may be directed to the Sunrise Manor Alzheimer's Unit or the Big Sioux Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.
David J. Coury
David J. Coury, 82, of Sioux City, died Friday; Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Joe L. DeVries
SHELDON, Iowa - Joe L. DeVries, 91, of Sheldon died Thursday, Aug. 13, 1998, at the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Reformed Church in Sheldon with the Rev. Gordon Bloemendaal officiating. Burial wil be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.
Mr. DeVries was born Aug. 5, 1907, the son of Louis and Josiena (Drost) DeVries. He received his education in country school and later graduated from Archer High School. He graduated from Hope College in Holland, Mich. and received his master's degree from the University of Iowa. He married Marie Grooters on June 23, 1932, in Sheldon, Iowa. The couple lived in Sheldon where he taught math at Sheldon High School and Sheldon Junior College. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his return from the service he operated a gas station and sold cars for several years in Sheldon. He taught at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, for 17 years and served as Dean of the College before his retirement in 1971. He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sheldon and had served on the Consistory and taught Sunday school.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Edgar DeVries and his wife, Phyllis of Sheldon, David DeVries of Lake Benton, Minn., and Donald DeVries and his wife, Ruth of San Jose, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter; three brothers; and four sisters.
Buelah M. Herrick
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa - Buelah Mae Herrick, 81, of Spirit Lake, formerly of Pomeroy, Iowa, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Spirit Lake.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the United Metodist Church in Spirit Lake. Burial will be at 1 p.m. in Union Cemetery in Pomeroy. Turner Funeral Home of Spirit Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Herrick was born June 17, 1917, the daughter of Arch and Frances (Johnson) Jones in Royal, Iowa. She attended grade school in Lincoln Township and graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1935. She then attended Thompson Beauty School. She married Rupert F. Herrick on Aug. 10, 1938, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple lived most of their lives in Pomeroy. During World War II they spent time in Ginger Blue, Mich. and Denver, Colo. They retired to Spirit Lake in 1976. They also had a winter home in Ft. Myers, Fla.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church where she was active in S.A.K. and many church circles. She was heavily involved in Order of the Eastern Star where she held the positions of Worthy Matron, Esther, and State Representative. She enjoyed knitting, fishing, traveling, and doing volunteer work. She especially enjoyed entertaining others.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter and her husband, Sally and Jerry Haas of Spirit Lake; a son and his wife, Rupert L. and Debra Herrick, of Ft. Collins, Colo; seven grandchildren, Tim and Cristi McClelland, Paul McClelland, Dan, Joe, and Mike Herrick, and Chad Linzman; and a great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan, and a sister, Violet Johnson.
Deloris Looft
ARMSTRONG, Iowa - Deloris Looft, 79, of Armstrong died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at her home.
Services were held Friday. Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Homes Inc. of Estherville, Iowa was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Looft was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Swea City, Iowa, the daughter of Michael J. and Martha (Engesser) Kennedy. She received her education in the Armstrong schools, graduating from Armstrong High School in 1937. She married Leon Looft on June 15, 1938, in Armstrong. The couple lived in Armstrong. He died Aug. 27, 1987. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Armstrong.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Gilmour of Falls Church, Va., and Donna and her husband, Peter Groetken, of Sioux City; a son, Tom Looft, and his wife, Judy, of Altoona, Iowa; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a step granddaughter; a step great-grandchild; four brothers and their wives, Donald and Wanda Kennedy of Armstrong, Robert and Peggy Kennedy of Spokane, Wash., Gerald and Liz Kennedy and Wayne and Alyce Kennedy, all of St. Louis; and two sisters, Kathleen Cantlon of Schuyler, Neb., and Marjorie Kennedy of Albuquerque, N.M.
She was preceded in death by a son, William; her parents; a sister, Leah Kennedy; and a brother, Edward.
Clara Wetrosky
LE MARS, Iowa - Clara Wetrosky, 90, of Le Mars, died Thursday at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's American Lutheran Church, ELCA, in Le Mars. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Monday with the family present at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Josephine E. Reifenrath
HARTINGTON, Neb. - Josephine E. Reifenrath, 90, of Hartington died Thursday at Community Pride Care Center in Battle Creek, Neb.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday with a vigil service at 7 p.m. at Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.
Grace Van Maanen
ROCK VALLEY, Iowa - Grace Van Maanen, 79, of Rock Valley died unexpectedly Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at McKennan Hospital at Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley with the Rev. C. Eric Fennema officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the church fellowship hall. Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Van Maanen was born Sept. 24, 1918, in Hull, Iowa, the daughter of Gerrit and Jennie (Boeve) Scholten. She attended school in Hull. She married Roy Van Maanen on Aug. 26, 1937 in Hull. The couple farmed near Doon, Iowa and Inwood, Iowa before retiring to Rock Valley in 1981.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Edwin and Audrey Van Maanen of Kersey, Colo., and Roger and Lori Van Maanen of Inwood; five daughters, Marcia and her husband, Gerry Van Ginkel, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Garlene and her husband, John H. Van Veldhuizen, of Doon, Joy Van Maanen of Rock Valley, Glenda and her husband, Robert Horstman, of Inwood, and Julie and her husband, Frank Boyer, of Hudson, S.D.; 27 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Albert and Henry Scholten; and a sister, Gertrude Vander Sloot.
Memorials may be directed to Hope Haven in Rock Valley.
Eunice P. Mortensen
ALTA, Iowa - Eunice Pauline Mortensen, 71, of Alta, died Thursday at Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Burial will be in the Scandinavian Cemetery in Alta. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home in Alta.
