Jiles F. Barbee Sr.
Jiles F. "Joe" Barbee Sr., 76, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Kretzschmar of Whitfield United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation was Friday.
Mr. Barbee was born Aug. 21, 1921, in Barnett, Mo., the son of Hillery and Lydia (Stark) Barbee.
He married Alvina Smith on Oct. 19, 1940, in Jefferson City, Mo. The couple had lived in Sioux City for 52 years. He was employed with various meat packing companies and retired from Armour and Co. after 27 years. He then purchased the Scandia Tap, retiring at age 62.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as secretary/treasurer of Sioux Quality Credit Union.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Jiles F. "Sonny" Jr., William H. and his wife, Julie, all of Sioux City, Gary M. and his wife, Kristi of Salix, Iowa, and Robert M. and his wife, Sue, of Beecher, Ill.; five daughters, Rose Ann and her husband, Jerry Mayo, Martha M. and her husband, Donn Schultz, and Marjie M. Burke, all of Sioux City, Marie C. and her husband, Kelly Schneider, of Temple, Texas, and Marion F. and her husband, Richard Brouillette of Bartlett, Ill.; a brother, Bill of Witchita, Kan.; six sisters, Pauline Miller of Dinuba, Calif., Bonnie Kempker, Juanita Dinwiddie and Ilene Dinwiddie, all of Eldon, Mo., Grace Rains of Columbia, Mo., and Ila Sweet of Sac, Calif.; 30 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ricky; a daughter, Beverly Barbee; a sister, Della Keith; and a brother, Hillery Jr.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Kevin and Jason Barbee, Richard Brouillette Jr., Kelly Schneider Jr., Gerald L. Mayo Jr. and Peter Moore II.
Bernice A. Zajecka
Bernice A. Zajecka, 75, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Larkin Moringside Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation was Friday.
Mrs. Zajecka was born Sept. 15, 1922, in Sioux City, the daughter of James and Veronica (Greetis) Lukshus (Lukas). She attended Sioux City schools. She married Paul J. Zajecka Jan. 12, 1946, in Chicago, Ill. He died May 31, 1993, in Sioux City. She worked at Armour & Co., Wellers Manufacturing, and IBP, retiring in 1984. She was a former member of St. Casimir Catholic Church. She was active with sewing, crocheting, knitting, and gardening.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Paul and Bonita Zajecka of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Michelle and Russ Uhl of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Charles and Florence Lucas of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Brandi Koetters, Britt Zajecka, and Britni Uhl; and nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Ann.
Pallbearers will be Britt Zajecka, Richard Lucas, Jim Lucas, Jerry Pospeshil, Jim McGinnis, Marty McGinnis, and Richard Zvirgzdinas.
Grace Lauck
Grace Lauck, 96, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, in Sioux City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. today in River View Cemetery, Rock Rapids, Iowa. Visitation was Friday.
Mrs. Lauck was born June 15, 1902, in Brewster, Minn., the daughter of Klaus and Cornelia (Diken) Boomgarden. She was raised in rural Brewster and attended country school.
She married Henry W. Lauck. The couple moved to Lester, Iowa, before moving to Sioux City in 1948. He died in 1969, in Sioux City.
She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a son-in-law, Melvin Claussen and his wife, Barbara, of Sioux City; a grandson, Jeffrey Claussen; two granddaughters, Sheryl Claussen and Sheila McQuerry; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Grace V. Claussen, six brothers and a sister.
Paul V. Carlson
Paul V. Carlson, 84, of Sioux City died Thursday Aug. 20, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lenghty illness.
Services will be at 7 p.m. today with the Rev. Merrill G. Muller, Goodwill Industries, officiating and a Masonic service by Landmark Lodge #103 A.F. and A.M. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Private burial will be at a later date in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Carlson was born Oct. 15, 1913, in Lennox, S.D., the son of Adolph and Lillian (Bell) Carlson. Having lived the majority of his life in Sioux City, he graduated from Central High School in 1933. He married Deloris M. McMillin May 14, 1941, in South Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II as a bomber engineer with the 349th Bomb Squadron, 100th Bomb Group. He was a Prisoner of War in Stalag 17-B from April 1944 to May 1945. He was employed by Wonder Bread for 18 years, and later with the Sather Cookie Co. for 10 years. He most recently was a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal service in Sioux City for 13 years, retiring in 1977.
He was a 50-year member of the Masons - Landmark Lodge #103 A.F. and A.M. He was also a member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War Tri-State Chapter, and The Veterans of Foreign Wars Sergeant Floyd Post #1973.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Gary Carlson of Sioux City; three daughters, Sandra Craig of St. Paul, Minn., Lynn Renshaw of Sioux City, and Lori Carlson of St. Paul Minn.; two sons from a previous marriage, Courtney Carlson and his wife, Rita of Sylmar, Calif., and James Carlson and his wife, Linda of Sioux City; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Leon Carlson.
Marjorie L. Larsen
Marjorie L. Larsen, 91, of Sioux City died Thursday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Private burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Madelon A. Swanson
Madelon A. Swanson, 72, of Sioux City died Thursday at her home after and extended illness.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
David W. Hass
David W. Hass, 58, of Sioux City died Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Morningside Presbyterian Church. A private burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. The body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Laryl Heitritter
HULL, Iowa - Laryl "Joe" Heitritter, 60, of rural Hull died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at his residence.
Graveside services will be at 10:15 a.m. today in Sheridan Township Cemetery near Boyden, Iowa, with the Rev. Matthew Draffen officiating. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. today at First Reformed Church in Boyden with the Rev. Matthew Draffen officiating. Visitation was Friday. Arrangements are under the direction of Vander Ploeg Funeral Home of Boyden.
Mr. Heitritter was born June 12, 1938, in Hull, the son of Lewis and Marie (Bosman) Heitritter. He attended country schools and graduated from Boyden High School in 1955.
He married Sharon Meester on Dec. 26, 1959, in George, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Boyden area until moving to a farm near Hull.
He was a member of First Reformed Church, where he served as an elder. He was a Sheridan Township turstee for Sioux County, Iowa, and served on the board of Boyden Co-op Elevator. He enjoyed golfing.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, Steven and Laura of Boyden, Keith and Tracey of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Joel and Connie of Hull; six grandchildren, Paul, Joey, Emma, Jonathan, Jake and Thomas; and two brothers, Ronald and his wife, Lynn, of Wayzata, Minn., and Merwin of Boyden.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Gerald Hatting
ASHTON, Iowa - Gerlad "Jerry" Hatting, 62, of Ashton died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ashton, with the Rev. Timothy J. Hogan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation was Friday. Arrangements are under the direction of Walton, Roste and Vogel Funeral Home of Ashton.
Mr. Hatting was born Aug. 12, 1936, in Ashton, the son of August and Marie E. (Stoltz) Hatting. He graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic School in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, stationed in Germany for 18 months.
He married Lorna Lechtenberg on Sept. 26, 1959, in Granville, Iowa. The couple made their home near Ashton, where they farmed. He also worked for Ashton Tile Plant and Sheldon Farm Service. He was presently employed at Maintainer in Sheldon, Iowa.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Tim and Sheila of Hospers, Iowa, and Dan and Tammy of Sioux City; three daughters, Kathy and her husband, Wade Guthrie of Houston, Texas, Judy and her husband, Dennis Wallace, of Sheldon and Lori Hatting of Sheldon; eight grandchildren, Kayla, Christopher, Jessica and Marissa Hatting, Jordon and Connor Guthrie, Kelsey and Alexa Wallace; his mother of Sibley, Iowa; a brother and his wife, Jim and Rosie of Ashton; his mother-in-law, Cleo Lechtenberg of Granville; two sisters-in-law, Norma Schuster of Le Mars, Iowa, and Georgia and Donald Becker of Hospers; and five brothers-in-law, Orville Schuster of Le Mars, Jim and his wife, Cari Lechtenberg of Le Mars, Orville and his wife, Mary Pottebaum of Alton, Iowa, Jeff and his wife, Janet Zwagerman of Sibley and Gordon and his wife, Bernice Schnieder of Granville.
He was preceded in death by his father; his father-in-law, Leo Lechtenberg; and a brother-in-law, Daniel Lechtenberg.
Iver R. Johnson
KINGSLEY, Iowa - Iver R. Johnson, 88, of Sioux City, formerly of Grand Meadow and Kingsley area, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at
Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Burial will be in Grand Meadow Cemetery, rural Washta, Iowa, with a Masonic service conducted by the Cosmos Lodge 470 A.F. & A.M. of Kingsley. Visitation was Friday. Earnest-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Johnson was born Aug. 18, 1910, in Manchester, Conn., the son of A.B. and Emma (Carlson) Johnson. He moved to the Grand Meadow Township area as a young child where he lived and farmed for 72 years. He married Genette Larson June, 23, 1941. They lived and farmed in the Grand Meadow and Kingsley area. She died in 1983. He married Vendalyn (Wertz) Santi, Nov. 23, 1984. He then moved to Sioux City.
He was a memeber of the Cosmos Lodge #470 A.F. & A.M., Kingsley, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry. He served as a Past Master of the Kingsley Masonic lodge, Cosmos Lodge #470 A.F. & A.M., Past Worthy Patron of Eastern Star, Kingsley, and Rainbow Dad. He served two terms on the Cherokee County Board of Supervisors, and was a past board member of the Grand Meadow Heritage Center. He was also involved with farm management. He enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Joell and Robert Brightfelt of Newark, Del., and Evonne and Thomas Smith, of Houston, Texas; a grandson, Kyle Smith; a sister, Helen Amundson, of Kansas City, Mo., and John E. Johnson, of North Carolina.
Memorials may be directed to the Iver Johnson Research Fund at the Siouxland Regional Cancer Center in Sioux City.
Elizabeth Nieman
HOMER, Neb. - Elizabeth "Mae" Nieman, 63, of Homer died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at the Pender Nebraska Community Hospital after a long illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Homer with the Rev. Jeanne Dahl officiating. Burial will be in the Omaha Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday with the family present after 7 p.m. at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.
Mrs. Nieman was born Feb. 24, 1935, in Sand Springs, Okla., the daughter of Frank and Edna E. (Sterling) Garrett. She married Marvin L. Nieman on Sept. 20, 1952, in Walthill, Neb. She had been employed with the Winnebago and Homer schools. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Homer.
Survivors include her husband; three sons and their wives, Joe and Su Nieman of Colorado Springs, Colo., David and Wanda Nieman of Vermillion, S.D., and Jerry and Grace Nieman of Divide, Colo.; a daughter, Darla and her husband, Leonard Baier of Rosalie, Neb.; a sister, Evelyn Lindgren of Boise, Idaho; and ten grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Harlan and Verlan Harris, Dennis McKernan, Kevin Arnold, and Rod and Marty Nieman.
Nettie V. Greenleaf
AKRON, Iowa - Nettie V. Greenleaf, 85, of Sioux City, formerly of Dakota City and Akron, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at the Matney Manor in Sioux City following a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron with the Rev. Allen Bidne, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church of Akron officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Dakota City Cemetery in Dakota City. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Monday with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Greenleaf was born Jan. 3, 1913, in Wallenburg, Wis., the daughter of V.W. and Myrtle (Sparks) Vandarwarka. She married Eddie Greenleaf Jan. 1, 1933, in Home, Neb. He died March 24, 1969. They farmed in Dakot County, Neb. and had been lifelong Dakota County residents until she moved to Akron in 1982. She had been a resident at the Matney Westside Manor in Sioux City for the last five years. She was retired from Sioux City Battery where she had worked for many years. She enjoyed crocheting, doll making, and horticulture. She was a Gold Star mother of the Greenleaf-Hanson American Legion Post Auxillary of Dakota City, and Hoshler American Legion Post #186 Auxillary of Akron.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Ed and Irene Greenleaf of Akron, Clarence and Helen Greenleaf of Pahrump, Nev., and Ralph and Sandy Greenleaf of Geneva, Ohio; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Iva Fitzgerald of Morrell, Neb., and Nellie Werp of White Bear Lake, Minn.; three brothers, Victor Vanderwarka of Boone, Iowa, Almond Vandarwarka and his wife, Mary, of Lead, S.D., and Andrew Vandarwarka and his wife, Vern, of California.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, James and Marvin; a daughter, Lydia; and a grandson, Edgar LeRoy, Jr.

Lois Mudder
ALCESTER, S.D. - Lois Mattie Mudder, 80, of Alcester, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, at the Covington Heights Health Care Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Big Springs Baptist Church in rural Alcester. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester
Mrs. Mudder was born May 21, 1918, in Alcester, the daughter of Harry and Mattie (Porter) Keiser. While still an infant, her mother died and she was raised by her mother's sister. She attended the Prospect Hill Grade School and graduated from Alcester High School in 1936. She did domestic work in the Sioux Falls and Alcester areas. She married Allen Mudder on Feb. 3, 1940, in the Peach Lutheran Church Parsonage. The couple began farming in 1944, near Alcester. In 1984, they retired and moved into Alcester. He died in November 1989. She moved to the Sunnycrest Retirement Center in Sioux Falls in 1993.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and later became a member of the Big Springs Baptist Church where she served in several differnt ministries. She also enjoyed serving as a volunteer with the Morningside Manor Auxiliary.
Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Sandra Dennis Dean of Spearfish, S.D., Diane and Anthon Henshaw of Danbury, Conn., and Marcine and Gary Van Zee of Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren, Beth Armstrong, Brian Dean, Boyd Dean, Ben Dean, Kathy Skalick, Kimberly Mundorff, Melanie Van Zee, and Grant and Gregory Van Zee; seven great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Myrna and Donald Anderson, of Alcester; a sister-in-law, Mitzi Keiser of Sioux Falls, and several neices and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Gaylan Keiser.
Laura A. Hamilton
HAWARDEN, Iowa - Laura A. Hamilton, 90, of Hawarden died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawardn with the Rev. Loren Vogler officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Visitation will be Monday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Mrs. Hamilton was born Aug 8, 1908, in Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of Chris and Catherine (Eden) Zachow. She grew up on the family farm near Le Mars, Iowa. She married Carrol Hamilton on Aug. 8, 1927, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple farmed west of Akron, Iowa in Union County, S.D. until 1945 when they moved to a farm north of Hawarden. He died March 21, 1992. She then moved to Hawarden.
Survivors include five sons and their wives, Delbert and Leora of Sioux Falls, S.D., Wayne and Lorraine of Alcester, S.D., Jack and Doris of Sioux Falls, Richard and Janice of Hudson, S.D., and Buck and Pat of Hawarden; a daughter, Angeline and her husband, Philip Van Wyhe of Ireton, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Hamilton of Fort Worth, Texas; a brother, Edward and his wife, Wyona Zachow, of Richland, S.D.; a sister, Ida Fickbohm of Alcester; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Elvin; three sisters, Mollie Larson, Alice Anderson, and Amanda; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.
Albert E. Benson
PENDER, Neb. - Albert Emil Benson, 76, of Pender died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Pender with the Rev. Stanley Kwiecien officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at Munderloh Funeral Home in Pender.
Mr. Benson was born Dec 20, 1921, in rural Wakefield, Neb., the son of Carl and Maria (Heunich) Benson. He graduated from Wakefield High School in 1940. He worked in the wheat fields in 1942 and later that year entered the U.S. Navy. He was a Pharmacist mate 3rd class until 1945. He married Pauline Essmann on April 18, 1948. They lived in Pender. He had a grocery store and worked at an auto dealership. For the last 28 years he had been a rural mail carrier. He was a past mayor of Pender, past president of the Chamber of Commerce, and served on St. Mark's and St. Peter's Church councils.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Bradley and Linda of Wake Forest, N.C.; a step grandson, Stephen; two brothers, Alfred, "Tuffy" Benson of Wakefield and Carl O. Benson of Fresno, Calif.; and a sister, Evelyn Jones of Kansas City, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; and a sister.
Raymond W. Landgraf
EARLY, Iowa - Raymond W. Landgraf, 80, of Ames, Iowa, formerly of Early, died Thursday at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday with a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m. at Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

INWOOD, Iowa - Albert William Klein, 92, of Inwood, died Thursday at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley, Iowa.

MAPLETON, Iowa - Cade Johnson, 17, of Spirit Lake, formerly of Mapleton, died Thursday at Spirit Lake, Iowa as the result of an accident.

DENISON, Iowa - Betty Pieper, 43, of Denison, died Friday at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison.
