William E. Hegstrom

William E. "Bill" Hegstrom, 67, of Broken Arrow, Okla., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, of stomach cancer at his daughter's residence in Broken Arrow.
Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday in Graceland Park Cemetery, with a Masonic service conducted by Landmark Lodge A.F.&A.M. 103 of Sioux City. The Rev. Mary Christopher of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sioux City will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Berkemier Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Mr. Hegstrom was born Feb. 3, 1931, in Sioux City. He lived in Sioux City until moving to Wagonee, Okla., in 1996. He graduated from St. Johns Military School in Salinas, Kan., and Baker University in Kansas.
He was employed with Wackenhut Security in Florida, then owned and operated Heggie's Jitterbug. He also was co-owner and broker of Hegstrom Real Estate Co., with his father. When his father died, he became owner and broker of the real estate company, retiring in 1996.
He also owned Memorial Park Cemetery from 1981 to 1984.
He served in the U.S. Air Force, Crash and Rescue for two years at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine.
He was a past member of Calvary Episcopal and St. Thomas Episcopal Churches in Sioux City and a member of St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Broken Arrow. He was a member of Abu Bekr Shrine, Masonic Marsh River Lodge A.F.&A.M. 102 in Brooks, Maine, American Association of Retired Persons, Elk Club and Eagles Club and served as past president of Keystone Cops in 1984.
Survivors include four sons, William and Steve of Brooks, Maine, Randy of Phoenix, Ariz., and Bruce of Boston, Mass.; a daughter, Amanda Hegstrom Terrebonne of Broken Arrow; three sisters, Jeanette Reekers of Sheldon, Iowa, Arlene Lang of Sacramento, Calif., and Pat Raynor of Dakota City; and 11 grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Dick Slump, Denny Wilde, Ron McLay, Roy Ehrhardt, Robert Morrisey and Paul Andersen.
Margaret A. Fouts
Margaret A. Fouts, 86, of South Sioux City died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dale Jirousek officiating. Burial will be in Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.
Mrs. Fouts was born April 29, 1912, in Dakota City, the daughter of Julius and Louise (Lahrs) Giese.
She married Hurley H. Fouts on Nov. 21, 1936, in South Sioux City. The couple owned and operated the Fout's Super Market in South Sioux City for 25 years. He died July 22, 1995, in South Sioux City.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 301.
Survivors include a stepson, Jack Fouts of Sioux City; a stepdaughter and her husband, JoAnn and Harry Johnson of Marcus, Iowa; two granddaughters, Shari Livingston and Michelle Glasson; three stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and a former daughter-in-law, Cathie Galvin.
She was preceded in death by a son, Richard O. Fouts, four brothers and a sister.
Pallbearers will be John Ream, Robert Giese, Jack Wright, Paul Glasson, Michael Livingston and Clare Galvin.
Memorials in her name may be directed to First Lutheran Church.
Willis Mason
Willis Mason, 45, of Sergeant Bluff died Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today and Thursday at the funeral home.
Martin Swain
Martin Swain, 55, of Seattle, Wash., died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, in Seattle.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery, Holly Springs, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.
Robert K. Moor
Robert Kenneth "Kenny" Moor, 85, of Sioux City died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, in Sioux City.
Services and burial will be at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Mr. Moor was born Oct. 5, 1912, in Sioux City, the son of Robert Arthur and Mabel (Spengler) Moor. He graduated from East High School.
He married Marian Embick on Nov. 3, 1935, in Iowa.
He was employed at Tolerton Warfield as a store manager in one of the Council Oak stores, where he was director of retail accounting. He became the director of accounting for Gateway Foods of Iowa Inc., retiring in the early 1980s.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Marla Jane Moor of Minneapolis, Minn.; two sons, Robert Terry and Richard Jan, both of Sioux City; a sister, Elaine Guggino of Minneola, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Molly Moor; and his nieces.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Deon Taylor.
Helen A. Johnson
Helen A. Johnson, 94, of Sioux City died Tuesday at a Sioux City nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Private burial services will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

The Rev. Patrick L. Kelly, 51, of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of South Sioux City, died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, at a Sioux Falls hospital.
Services were held at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. Burial was in Hills of Rest Memorial Park.

Alvina V. Jones, 73, of St. Paul Park, Minn., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday in West St. Paul.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hope Community Church, Cottage Grove, Minn. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Kok Funeral Home in Cottage Grove.
Henry L. Minton Jr.
Henry Lee Minton Jr., 64, of Superior, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday at a Sioux Falls, S.D., hospital following a lenghty illness.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. The body was cremated. There will be no visitation.
Artie Johnson
Artie Johnson, 85, of Des Moines, formerly of Sioux City, died Monday at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Graceland Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Arrangements are under the direction of Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines.
Marie L. Heath
Marie L. Heath, 92, of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of North Sioux City, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Riverside United Methodist Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Merrill G. Muller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Mrs. Heath was born March 29, 1906, in Anthon, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Lillie (Fixel) Coyler. She was raised in the Anthon area and lived in the Springfield, S.D., area for a while.
She married Harvey E. Heath on Aug. 28, 1924, in Sioux City. She helped him in the operation of their service station. He died Nov. 14, 1986, in Sioux City.
She had lived in Sioux City and North Sioux City the majority of her life. She moved to Sioux Falls in 1996.
She was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church. She enjoyed flowers and crafts.
Survivors include a son, Edward Coyler Sr. of Sergeant Bluff; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Archie, Marvin and H. "Pete" Heath; and a daughter, Lulu (Heath) Loetz.
Franklyn Vogt Sr.
BANCROFT, Neb. - Franklyn Allen Vogt Sr., 51, of Alameda, Calif., formerly of Bancroft, died Friday at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Bancroft Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Bancroft Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Munderloh Funeral Home in Bancroft.
Opal M. Abbott
KINGSLEY, Iowa - Opal M. Abbott, 90, of Kingsley died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Earnest-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley, with the Rev. Michael Gruhn officiating. Graveside services will be at 1:435 p.m. Thursday in Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Abbott was born Feb. 8, 1908, in Mountain Grove, Mo., the daughter of Clarence and Lillie M. (Bosley) Ellington.
She married Ronald B. Abbott on May 26, 1949, in Marysville, Kan. The couple moved to Trenton, Mo. In 1954 they moved to Ponca, Neb.
After retirement in 1974 they traveled before moving to Newberry Springs, Calif., in 1986. They returned to Kingsley in 1997.
Mrs. Abbott entered Kingsley Nursing and Rehab in September 1997.
Survivors include her husband; four sons, William "Bill" of Newberry Springs, Wayne and his wife, Norma, of Kingsley, Jim of Mondamin, Iowa, and Ronnie and his wife, Nancy, of Omaha, Neb.; a brother, Carl Ellington of Trenton, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; nine great-granddchildren; a niece and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lydia "Pat" Acuff Golane and Ruby Farr; two brothers, Ernest and L.W. Ellington; and three grandchildren, Rich, Sandy and Gale Abbott.
Harold W. LaBahn
MERRILL, Iowa - Harold W. LaBahn, 78, of McKinleyville, Calif., formerly of Merrill, Iowa, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pierce Mortuary Chapel in Eureka, Calif. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Eureka. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. LaBahn was born April 12, 1920, in Merrill, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William LaBahn.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 as part of the construction battalion which built Henderson Field on Guadalcanal.
He married Geneva L. Williams on March 30, 1947, in Sioux City. The couple farmed near Merrill for more than 50 years. They moved to McKinleyville in 1994.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kay LaBahn of McKinleyville and Fran MacReynolds of Houston, Texas; a brother, Leroy LaBahn of Hinton, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jeni and Michelle MacReynolds and Stephanie Parmalee; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Amelia LaBahn and Lucille Lehmann; and a brother, Earl.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Humboldt Inc. of Eureka or the charity of choice.
Honsen Davies
CASTANA, Iowa - Honsen Davies, 90, of Castana died Monday at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Castana Community Church of Christ. Burial will be in Center Cemetery. Visitation will after 2 p.m. Thursday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa.
Orleen Waund
SANBORN, Iowa - Orleen Alta Waund, 89, of Sanborn died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Sanborn. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Primghar, Iowa. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at Sanborn Funeral Home.
Mrs. Waund was born Oct. 14, 1908, in Montour, Iowa, the daughter of Willis and Anna (Spindler) Hinegardner. She was raised and educated in Montour.
She attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
She married Dunrith Waund on Jan. 24, 1928, in Montour. The couple farmed near Primghar. He died March 28, 1959, and she then moved to Sanborn. She entered Pleasant View Nursing Home in September 1991.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, WSCS, Area Council on Aging, Farm Bureau Women, Prairie View Auxiliary and the Prairie View board of directors. She began the hot lunch program in Primghar, was a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher and Sunday School superintendent, began the Sanborn Dinner Date and was distribution chairwoman for surplus commodities in Sanborn. She enjoyed gardening and growing flowers.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Dunrith Jr. "Bud" and Joan of Prior Lake, Minn., and William and Emily of Sanborn; a daughter, Sheril Ann Getting of Sanborn; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Arlo Hinegardner of Tama, Iowa, and Oris Hinegardner of Montour.
She was preceded in death by a daughter in infancy, a son-in-law, a brother and a half sister.
The Rev. William Haak
SANBORN, Iowa - The Rev. William Haak, 78, of Sanborn died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon, Iowa.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First Reformed Church in Sanborn. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. today at the Sanborn Funeral Home. There will be a family visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Fellowship Hall at the church.
The Rev. Mr. Haak was born Nov. 5, 1919, in Sodus, N.Y., the son of Jacob and Jennie (Meins) Haak. He was raised in Sodus, graduating from Sodus High School. He attended Hope College and Western Seminary in Holland, Mich.
He became an ordained minister of the Reformed Church of America in 1950.
He married Magdelena Havert on July 12, 1947, in Sodus. They served in Grand, Mich., from 1950 to 1954, Sanborn from 1954 to 1966, Grand Rapids, Mich., from 1966 to 1973, Archer, Iowa, from 1973 to 1981, and Sheldon, Iowa, from 1982 to 1992.
He was a member of First Reformed Church, East Sioux Classis and Men's Service Club. He enjoyed fishing and playing pool.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mary Ann and her husband, Glenn Grooters, of Sanborn and Marilyn Haak of Redlands, Calif.; a son and his wife, Robert and Pam of Spencer, Iowa; six grandchildren, David Grooters, Julie and Korwyn Roos and Matthew, John and Brian Haak; a brother and his wife, Marvin and Dorothy of Kingman, Ariz.; a sister and her husband, Edith and Robert Pettit of Wolcoot, N.Y.; and a brother-in-law, Albert Dobbin of Sodus.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mildred Dobbin and Ruth Haak.
Joyce Douma
SIBLEY, Iowa - Joyce Douma, 65, of Sibley, formerly of Sheldon, Iowa, died Monday at County View Manor in Sibley.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Andringa Funeral Home Chapel in Sibley. Burial will be in Holman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Ardell R. Forney
HOLLY SPRING, Iowa - Ardell R. "Buster" Forney, 75, of Petaluma, Calif., formerly of Holly Springs and Hartington, Neb., died Thursday, July 23, 1998.
Arangements were under the direction of Neptune Society of Northern California.
Mr. Forney was born Feb. 28, 1923, near Holly Springs, the son of Orval Dean and Annabelle (Clift) Forney.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946. His awards and decorations include the Army Occupational Medal, 1944 (Germany) and the World War II Victory Ribbon, 1945.
He was employed as an independent insurance broker, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of Petaluma Lions Club and a past president of Leisure Lake Mobile Home Park Social Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra of Denver, Colo., and Marcene of the Medford, Ore. area; a son, Richard of the Medford area; seven grandchildren; a sister, Mary Alice Hansen of Petaluma; and two brothers, David of Denver and Don of Hornick, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Roy and Bernard; two sisters, Frances Madison and Norma Jean Griggs; and a grandchild.
Gertrude Ernest
SCHLESWIG, Iowa - Gertrude Ernest, 85, of Schleswig died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial will be in Morgan Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig.
Mrs. Ernest was born March 17, 1913, in Ida County, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Clara (Schumann) Backhaus. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
She married Hugo Frederick Ernest on Sept. 28, 1932, in Schleswig. The couple farmed near Schleswig. He died April 3, 1964. She continued to lived on the farm until 1974, when she moved into Schleswig.
She was a member of United Church of Christ, Ladies Guild and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, baking and traveling.
Survivors include four daughters, Norma Jean and her husband, Gerald Lyman, of Grand Junction, Colo., Bernadine and her husband, Paul Kragel, of Schleswig, Marlene Harper of New London, Iowa, and Jolene and her husband, John Hoefling, of Odebolt, Iowa; two sons and their wives, Charles and Traudl of Roxboro, N.C., and Hugo C. Jr. and Cynthia of Grand Junction; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Fern Stier of Schleswig; a brother, Carl Backhaus of Aurelia, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Clara Schwieso of Marana, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Kruse; two brothers, Otto Backhaus and one in infancy; and a grandson, Steven Ernest.
Elwin Wright
PAULLINA, Iowa - Elwin "Bud" Wright, 63, of Paullina, formerly of Correctionville, Iowa, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home in Correctionville, with the Rev. Consorcia A. Sanchez officiating. Burial will be in Correctionville Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Wright was born June 28, 1935, in Correctionville, the son of Elwood and Glennis (Lewis) Wright. He attended country school.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959.
He farmed near Correctionville for many years, where he fed hogs and cattle. He enjoyed fishing and attending auctions. He bought and sold antiques.
Survivors include two daughters, Lori Wright of Colorado and Roberta and her husband, Bart Miller, of Sioux City; two sons, Robert of Cherokee, Iowa, and Lonnie of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Amber, B.J. and Courtney Wright; a sister and her husband, Lois and Don Whitesell of Woodland, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers will be Jerry and Grant Fitch, Dennis and Beaux Sargent, Roland Wonder and Mike Rabe.
James R. Grant
VERMILLION, S.D. - James R. Grant, 63, of Vermillion died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, of complications of cancer at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Vermillion. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. today at Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion. There will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m. at the church.
Mr. Grant was born Dec. 10, 1934, in Yankton, S.D., the son of Henry and Effie (Wagman) Grant. He was raised in Gayville, S.D., and graduated from Gayville High School in 1952.
He married Rhoda Jennings on Nov. 17, 1953, in Yankton. The couple farmed in the Gayville area for 27 years and moved to Vermillion in 1981. He was director of fleet and freight at the University of South Dakota from 1972 until his retirement in 1995. He then worked part time as a car salesman at Quality Motors in Vermillion.
He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, where he served as lector, usher and Eucharistic minister. He was a member of Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed restoring classic cars and was a member of Dakota Cruisers Car Club in Vermillion.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Michael Grant and Gary Jennings, both of Sioux Falls, and Bruce Jennings of Mankato, Minn.; three daughters, Vicky Ganschow of Wakonda, S.D., Jaye Whitte of Sturgis, S.D., and Teresa Grant of Vermillion; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Brian Grant; a sister, Katherine McKissock; and his parents.
Clifford J. Minor
JEFFERSON, S.D. - Clifford J. Minor, 68, of rural Jefferson died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Anderson Funeral Home in Elk Point, S.D., with the Rev. N. Richard Wiekert officiating. Burial will be in Elk Point Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Minor was born Sept. 22, 1929, in Nebraksa City, Neb. He moved to rural Jefferson with his family as a child.
He married Junice Rosenbaum in 1961, in Elk Point. The couple farmed in rural Jefferson and retired in 1983. She died Dec. 30, 1995.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Frank and Wanda of rural Jefferson and Jesse and Michelle of North Sioux City; four grandchildren, Joanie, Natasha, Jessica and Danielle; and a sister, Fern Damrua of Westfield, Iowa.
Margaret C. Koster
CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa - Margaret C. Koster, 68, of Correctionville died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Indian Hills Care Center in Sioux City.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, Iowa, with the Rev. Michael Harman officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery at Midway, Battle Creek, Iowa. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Koster was born March 29, 1930, in Sioux City, the daughter of Harold O. and Constance H. (Thoen) Hartman. She was raised in Sioux City and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Central High School.
She married Walter E. Koster on April 10, 1981, in Sioux City. The couple farmed in the Pierson, Iowa, and Correctionville area and moved into Correctionville in 1985. He died Nov. 4, 1988.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Correctionville and Artist Club in Sioux City.
Surviviors include a sister, Clarice Fischer of Omaha, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, James Walter and Ward William; and a sister.
Tayler L. Hanno
LE MARS, Iowa - Tayler Lawrence Hanno, infant son of Eric and Kim (Waterbury) Hanno of Le Mars, was prematurely born Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars, with the Rev. Richard Ries officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen, Iowa.
Survivors include his parents; three sisters, Ashton, Cassie and Bailey, all at home; maternal grandparents, Floyd and Sharon Waterbury of Akron, Iowa; paternal grandparents, Lawrence and Bev Hanno of Le Mars; and paternal great-grandparents, Bob and Jackie Minten of Alton, Iowa.
