Albert A. Slanis
Albert Anthony Slanis, 70, of Missouri City, Texas, formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, July 23, 1998.
Services were held Monday, July 27, at David Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg, Texas. The Rev. Hugh J. Curran, C.S.B. officiated. Entombment was in the mausoleum in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Rosenberg, Texas.
Mr. Slanis was born Feb. 29, 1928, in Sioux City, the son of Anthony Slanis and Patricia Slanis Dapp. He was a veteran of the Armed Forces and was retired from Phillips Petroleum Co.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie (Emmick) Slanis; a sister, Helen Duggan of Sioux City; five children, Mark D., Bruce A. and Amy Slanis, Renee Slanis Keys and Teresa Slanis Brady; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, Peter Dapp.
Pallbearers were Bruce A. and Mark D. Slanis, Don S. Brady, Gary E. Keys, Richard O. Wilson Jr., Don Emmick, Bill Allen and Harry DeMarest.
Memorials may be directed to Disabled American Veterans.
Alta Tozier
Alta Maxine Tozier, 87, of Montgomery, Ala., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, in Montgomery.
Memorial services for the immediate family were Monday, Aug. 3, at Brooks-Cargile Funeral Home in Montgomery. The body was cremated. Burial will take place in Sioux City at a later date.
Mrs. Tozier was born May 10, 1911, in Sioux City, the daughter of Clarence and Alma (Anderson) Gray.
She married Charles M. Tozier.
She was a lifelong Sioux City resident and was employed with Younkers for many years.
She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Sioux City.
Survivors include a son, William Charles Tozier of Foley, Ala.; a daughter, Evonne Tozier Williams of Montgomery, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Clarence and Byrle Gray of Portland, Ore.; and three sisters, Ione Barnett of Sacramento, Calif., Evelyn Kampe of Lincoln, Neb., and Wilma and her husband, Joe Coe, of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Charlene White; and a sister, Helen McClain.
Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
James P. Kleinheksel
James Pauliere "Paul" Kleinheksel, 89, of Sioux City died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today in Graceland Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Sheryl Ashley of Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Mr. Kleinheksel was born March 11, 1909, in Hospers, Iowa, the son of Herman and Johanna (Leemkuil) Kleinheksel. He graduated from Sioux City Central High School and attended trade school in Chicago.
He owned and operated National Refrigeration.
He married Bernice Cooper on June 4, 1933, in Sioux City.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and Leeds Masonic Temple Triangle Lodge 643.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Gale and Doyle Vickers of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Forrest, Jason and Jill; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert; two brothers, Harry and Orville; and two sisters, Gertrude Arndt and Bernadine Stansbury.
Memorials may be directed to Grace United Methodist Church.
Floyd E. Vondrak
Floyd E. Vondrak, 72, of Petaluma, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, at a Petaluma hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services were Monday, Aug. 3, at St. Joseph's Church in Cotati, Calif. Burial was in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Petaluma. Arrangements were under the direction of Parent-Sorensen Mortuary in Petaluma.
Kenneth H. Farrell
Kenneth H. Farrell, 73, of Sioux City died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at Sunrise Retirement Community following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Tom Lo Van, associate pastor of Morningside Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Farrell was born July 7, 1925, in Sioux City.
He married Shirlee Schumacher on Nov. 20, 1950, in Luverne, Minn.
He was employed with Sioux Tools for 46 years. He also had worked for I.N.D. Supply.
He was a Boy Scout Master for many years and a Friend of Bill W.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Thomas and Susan of rural Sergeant Bluff and Mike and Sharon of Omaha, Neb.; two daughters and their husbands, Terri and Gary Rollheiser of Kansas City, Mo., and Barbara and Joe Gormally of Sioux City; a sister, Judy Bainbridge of South Sioux City; six grandchildren; and a great-aunt.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Brown.
Viola F. Mosher
Viola Fern Jacobsen Mosher, 77, of Sioux City died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Trimble United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kate Bell officiating. Burial will be in Ida Grove Cemetery, Ida Grove, Iowa. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mrs. Mosher was born Jan. 11, 1921, in Ida Grove, the daughter of Roy and Vera (Hanks) Nelson.
She married Martin Jacobsen on Aug. 28, 1938, in Onawa, Iowa. He died Aug. 4, 1970, in Ida Grove.
She married Frank Mosher on June 26, 1985, in Elk Point, S.D. He died July 26, 1985, in Sioux City.
She had lived in Ida Grove for many years and in Chandler, Ariz., for two years. She had lived in Moville, Iowa, for four years and moved to Sioux City 13 years ago.
She was employed with Harrison Green House in Sioux City for several years.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Douglas and Linda Jacobsen of Portland, Ore.; a daughter and her husband, Virginia and Dwayne Hesse of Sioux City; a brother, Harold Nelson of Gladstone, Ore.; a sister and her husband, Etta and Floyd Brock of Auburn, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, Steven, Bryan, Martin, Douglas, Donald and Richard Hesse, Rhonda Dickinsen, Sheri Miller and Rusty, Willie, Penny and Ralph Jacobsen; 31 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Helen and Maize Jacobsen, both of Ida Grove, and Ruth Ward of Lebonon, Tenn.; a special friend, Shelby Harder of Westfield, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and her parents.
Pallbearers will be Steven, Bryan, Martin, Douglas, Donald, Richard and Dustin Hesse and Willie Jacobsen.
Corbin Shuckahosee
Corbin Shuckahosee of Hiawatha, Kan., formerly of Nebraska, died Friday at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kan.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Burial will be in Hiawatha Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Pottawatomie American Legion WE-TA-SE Post 410. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Native American Church services will be 9 p.m. today at the Yvonne Shuckahosee Negonsott residence on the Sac & Fox Reservation.
Frances M. Grabin
Frances M. Grabin, 86, of Sioux City died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at Sterling House in Sioux City following a lengthy illness.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Logan Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Alex Washington officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Mrs. Grabin was born Feb. 11, 1912, in Sioux City, the daughter of Garfield and Ida (Olson) Claydon. She attended Sioux City schools.
She married Kenneth E. Grabin on Feb. 19, 1930. He died Feb. 26, 1977, in Sioux City.
She was a lifelong Sioux City resident.
She was a member of Mayflower Congregational Church and Senior Citizen Center.
Survivors include a niece, Elizabeth Munn of Wilner, Ala.; and two caregivers, Thelma Fetterman of Sioux City and Sandy Fetterman of Elk Point, S.D.
Beatrice J. Newman
Beatrice J. Newman, 74, of Sioux City died Friday, July 31, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Allen D. Call pastor of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Newman was born June 8, 1924, in Sioux City, the daughter of Mike and Mary (Butrous) Haddad.
She married Warren F. Newman on Dec. 21, 1946, in Sioux City. He died March 1, 1988, in Sioux City.
She was a lifelong Sioux City resident.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Gary M. and Pamela of Sioux City; two brothers, Ernest and his wife, Patricia, and Emil Haddad, both of Sioux City; a sister, Genevive Gregg of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Tomi Jo and Samantha Thompson and G. Michael Newman Jr.; and three great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.
Pallbearers will be Jeff, Rodney, Richard, Mike and Bradley Gregg
and Gary Lohse.
Manuel J. Coury

Manuel J. "Manny" Coury, 86, of Sioux City died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas E. Geelan officiating. There will be an honor guard provided by the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus at the service. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 2 to 4 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., a rosary at 7:30 p.m. said by the Third Degree Knights of Columbus, followed by a Chalice service conducted by the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, all at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home. The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 6:30 until after the Chalice service today at the funeral home.
Mr. Coury was born May 4, 1912, in Sioux City, the son of James A. and Barbara (Batal) Coury.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater.
He married Helen V. Hazer on Feb. 23, 1946, in Des Moines. She died April 13, 1979, in Sioux City.
He was employed with Swift and Company for more than 30 years, retiring in 1977.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a former member of St. Joseph Church, where he served as an usher. He was a member of the Epiphany Council 743 Third Degree Knights of Columbus, the Garrigan Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and Holy Name Society. He was an avid sports fan.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Barbara A. and Michael Detlefsen of Slippery Rock, Penn., and Mary K. and Carlos Carrillo of Sioux City; a son, Manuel J. Jr. of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Maria Carrillo and Brad Detlefsen; a brother and his wife, David and Marcella of Sioux City; a sister, Clara Macy of Golden, Colo.; two sisters-in-law, Freda M. Coury of Sioux City and Phyllis Coury of Riverside, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Michael, Edward, Nicholas and Alfred; and a sister, Edna M. Coury.
Pallbearers will be Brad Detlefsen, Maria and Carlos Carrillo, Rick Coury, Raymond Macy and Dennis Madden.
Memorials in his name may be directed to Goodwill Adult Day Care Program and Respite Service or Hospice of Siouxland.
Beatrice L. Perry
PRIMGHAR, Iowa - Beatrice L. Perry, 76, of Primghar died Saturday at Primghar Care Center.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Primghar. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present at 6:30 p.m. and a Scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m. at Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Primghar.
Gladys E. Nielsen
CLEGHORN, Iowa - Gladys E. Nielsen, 79, of Cleghorn died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m., at Cleghorn Presbyterian Church, with Robert Blair officiating. Burial will be in Marcus-Amherst Cemetery, Marcus, Iowa. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa.
Mrs. Nielsen was born Nov. 3, 1918, in Cleghorn, the daughter of John and Edna (Smith) Wilcox. She graduated from Cleghorn High School in 1937.
She married Herbert Johnson in 1937, in Marcus. He died August 1957. She married Paul Nielsen on Nov. 19, 1959, in Cleghorn. She lived on a farm in Sheridan Township, rural Cleghorn.
Mrs. Nielsen was a charter member of Cleghorn Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the church circle and American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Harold B. Johnson and Connie of Cleghorn and Larry D. Johnson and Ruby of Cherokee; five grandsons, Bruce, Keith, Kevin, Kirk and Kerry Johnson; five great-grandchildren; and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lucille Hazen; and a great-granddaughter.
Carl H. Schulz
BLENCOE, Iowa - Carl Howard Schulz, 74, of Blencoe died Sunday at his residence near Blencoe.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, Iowa. Burial will be in Calhoun Cemetery, Magnolia, Iowa. Visitation will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.
Clarence J. Nikolaison
BLENCOE, Iowa - Clarence J. "Butch" Nikolaison, 64, of Blencoe died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Donald R. Ludwick and Shawn Walden, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Blencoe. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service today at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.
Mr. Nikolaison was born Jan. 30, 1934, in rural Blencoe, the son of Clarence L. and Ruby (Cartmill) Nikolaison. He attended school in Blencoe, graduating in 1954.
He lived in the Blencoe area, where he farmed.
He was formerly married to Edna "Todd" Poole. He entered the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting, Iowa, in 1995.
Mr. Nikolaison was a member of First Christian Church and attended Church of Christ in Whiting.
Survivors include two nephews, Tom Kuehl of Des Moines and Steven Kuehl and his wife, Connie, of Phoenix City, Ala.; and a niece and her husband, Kathie and Dale Hagge of Littleton, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Darlene Kuehl; and a brother-in-law, Donald Kuehl Jr.
Donald Singer
LE MARS, Iowa - Donald Singer, 70, of Le Mars died Sunday at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Lillian E. Orr
ONAWA, Iowa - Lillian Elizabeth Orr, 75, of McClelland, Iowa, formerly of Onawa, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at her residence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Donald R. Ludwick officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery, Ute, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.
Mrs. Orr was born July 16, 1923, in Oelwein, Iowa, the daughter of John E. and Ethel M. (Gries) Gray. She moved with her family to a farm near Onawa when she was 7 years old and attended school in Onawa.
She married James Wilder on July 29, 1944, in Onawa. She was a homemaker and seamstress.
She married John L. Orr on Aug. 16, 1975, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple moved to McClelland in 1975.
She was a member of Royal Neighbors of America for 22 years.
Survivors include her husband; four sons, Ronald Wilder and his wife, Norma, of Onawa, David Wilder and his wife, Donna, of Salix, Iowa, Michael Wilder and his wife, Susan, of Onawa and Jim Wilder of Sioux City; five daughters, Eva and her husband, Lynn Parr, of Mapleton, Iowa, Connie Wilder and Rocky Brooks of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Linda Fernandez of Sioux City, Betty and her husband, Jim Kellogg, of Decatur, Neb., and Vivian and her husband, Jeff Vader, of Hebron, Neb.; 25 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and a half sister, Delores Miller of Onawa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Heidi; a great-granddaughter; and three brothers, John, Ronald and Raymond.
Dudley D. De Vries
MAURICE, Iowa - Dudley D. "Dan" De Vries, 88, of Maurice died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Ireton, Iowa, with the Rev. H.H. Schauland officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Township Cemetery, rural Maurice. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City, Iowa.
Mr. De Vries was born Nov. 3, 1909, in rural Maurice, the son of Jelle and Gertrude (Vande Weerd) De Vries. He was raised in Maurice.
He served in the U.S Army during World War II.
He married Clara De Bruin on Feb. 12, 1946, in Maurice. The couple farmed in the Struble, Ireton and Maurice areas. She died Jan. 4, 1986, in Sioux Falls, S.D.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Ireton American Legion Post.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Carol and Roger Kooi of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren, Shane, Robyn and Larry Scott, Kandace Roskamp, Cindi Rossow, Stacy Kranz and Nicholas Kooi; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elsie Rosdail of Amana, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Muriel Scott, and eight brothers and sisters.
Gorden D. Owens
UTE, Iowa - Gorden Delbert Owens, 70, of Ute died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute, with the Rev. Eugene Ernst officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Aaby Post 442 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5605, all of Ute. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute.
Mr. Owens was born Nov. 15, 1927, near Charter Oak, Iowa, the son of Gustav and Esther (Achelbein) Owens. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended country school and St. Paul's Lutheran School in Ute.
He served with the U.S. Army Air Defense Team during World War II and with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he worked for Henry Kunze.
He married Ruth Anderson on March 6, 1955, in Rockwell City, Iowa. He farmed in the Soldier, Iowa, area before purchasing a farm near Ute in 1962. The family moved onto the farm in 1964.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, serving in various offices. He was also a member of American Legion Aaby Post 442 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5605.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Leila and her husband, Don Kuhlmann of Charter Oak and Ramona Pithan of Ute; two sons, Paul and his wife, Colleen, of Scranton, Iowa, and Erich of Ute; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary and her husband, Jim Cunningham, of Hot Spring Village, Ark., and Dona Owens Colyer of Salix, Iowa; three brothers and their wives, Howard and Pat of Palmdale, Calif., Ray and Barb of Hot Spring Village and Robert and Lou Ann of Norfolk, Neb.; a brother-in-law, Howard Uhl of Mapleton, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Marlys Retalic of Miami, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Kurt Gustav; a granddaughter, Stephanie Owens; his parents; his stepmother, Elizabeth (Staugaard) Owens; an infant brother and sister; a sister, Bev Uhl; and a brother-in-law, Edward Colyer Jr.
Harry Wm. Faber
BOYDEN, Iowa - Harry Wm. Faber, 61, of Boyden died Monday at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon, Iowa.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Presbyterian Church in Boyden. Burial will be prior to the service Wednesday in Sheridan Township Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Boyden.
