Sophia S. Kakula
Sophia Sonia Kakula, 100, of Sioux City died Saturday at Matney Morningside Manor.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Marie Vaa
Marie Vaa, 82, of Sioux City died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital after a long illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. Peter Mans officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mrs. Vaa was born Dec. 3, 1915, in Edgerton, Minn., the daughter of Hubert and Nellie (Noteboom) Tott. She married George Vaa on Oct. 18, 1952, in Sioux City. He died in 1967 in Sioux City. She worked at Swift's Packing Co. for over 40 years and then owned and operated a ceramics business for several years.
She was a member of First Christian Reformed Church.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Raymond and Mildred Zachgo of Winchester Va.; three grandchildren, Carl, Gary and Glen; five great-grandchildren; three brothers and their wives, Vernon and Betty Tott and Lester and Marge Tott, all of Sioux City; and Harold and Dorothy Tott of Dubuque, Iowa; and a sister and her husband, Viola and Earl Madsen of Lincoln, Neb.;
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert, William, and Eugene; and three sisters, Nellie Vaugh, Jennie Herbold, and Viola Tott.
Pallbearers will be Tim, Pat, and Mike Tott, Roger McGaffick, and Tim and Tom Madsen.
Francis D. Spain
Francis D. Spain, 80, of Sioux City died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Geelan officiating. The body will be cremated at a later date. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Mr. Spain was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Petersville, Iowa, the son of Daniel and Alice (O'Farrel) Spain. He was raised in the Charlotte, Iowa area, graduated from Charlotte High School in 1936, and lived in Clinton County, Iowa, before moving to Sioux City in 1953. He married Connie Hamblin on March 15, 1945, in Clinton, Iowa. He worked as a route man for Roberts Dairy in Sioux City and owned and operated the Dunes Bar in North Sioux City for many years. He later owned the Paxton Tap in Sioux City, retiring in 1983. The couple had been winter residents of Desert Hot Springs, Calif. for the past 13 years.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a former member of the church's Men's Club. He was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He organized the first chapter of the National Cribbage League in Sioux City.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Michael and his wife, Benita, of San Francisco, Larry of Tucson, Ariz., and Phil and Craig, both of Sioux City; two daughters, Janelle Spain of Sioux City, and Theresa and her husband, Bryan Goodman, of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Zak Spain, Dorian Spain-Lavender and Emily Spain-Lavender; and a sister, Mary Alice Brick of Clinton, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Artie and Joey; and two sisters, Kathryn Spain and Sr. Mary Fleurette, OSF.
Pallbearers will be Jack Walding, Mike Borschuk, Charlie Lanphier, Lee Mingo, Craig Estee, Kurt Estee and Micky McGuire.
LaVerne L. Bowman
LaVerne L. Bowman, 89, of Sioux City died Friday Aug. 7, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home after a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Augustana Lutheran Church with the Rev. Michael Last and Vicar Jim Erdman officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Bethesda Cemetery at Bethesda, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.
Mrs. Bowman was born Dec. 7, 1908, in rural Yorktown, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar P. and Mabel (Freed) Engstrom. She attended rural school in Tarkio Township, Iowa, District 1, and graduated from Essex High School in Essex, Iowa. She married Clifford E. Bowman on Dec. 25, 1936, in Hepburn, Iowa. She attended Iowa State Teachers College Extension in 1938, and attended Morningside College for two years to receive her teaching certificate. She taught school in rural schools in Page County, Iowa, was a substitute teacher in the Sioux City school system during the 1950s and 1960s, and taught at Harriet Ballou New Hope Center until her retirement in 1972.
She was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church where she had been active in various church organizations.
Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, John and Karen Bowman of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; a daughter and her husband, Gwen and John Hart of Le Mars, Iowa; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Virgina Engstrom, of Clarinda, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Bertil Engstrom.
Pallbearers will be Patrick Bowman, Sean Bowman, Leslie Freed, Mike Ellis, John Hart, and Jerry Carlson.
Susan K. Boysen
ARTHUR, Iowa - Susan Kay Boysen, 42, of Arthur died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at Loring Hospital in Sac City, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, Iowa, with the Rev. John Schauer officiating. Burial will be in Hayes Township Cemetery in rural Arthur. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today with the family present from 3 to 8 p.m. at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Miss Boysen was born July 2, 1956, in Ida Grove, the daughter of Hubert and Corlys (Ohl) Boysen. She was baptized in the Lutheran Church in August, 1956. She received her instruction and was confirmed in the church. She attended Special Education classes at Ida Grove and Wall Lake, Iowa, to the age of 21. She then went to Ida Sheltered Industries in Battle Creek, Iowa, until her health began to fail in April 1998.
Survivors include her parents; a brother, Lee Boysen, of Odebolt, Iowa; and many other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, August and Annette Ohl; and her paternal grandparents, Henry and Inez Boysen.
Whelma M. Schmidt
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Whelma Marie Schmidt, 86, of Storm Lake died Friday Aug. 7, 1998, at the Buena Vista County Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with the Rev. Duane Queen officiating. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Omaha, Neb. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Monday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
Mrs. Schmidt was born Oct. 23, 1911, in Battle Creek, Iowa, the daughter of William and Anna (Brosamle) Lampe. She graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1929, and attended business school in Sioux City. She returned to Battle Creek during the Depression and worked in retail until 1934. During that time she was an active member of the Presbyterian Church and participated in choir, Sunday school and other church programs. She married Magnus Hansen on May 27, 1934, in Schleswig, Iowa. The couple lived in Waterloo, Neb. until moving to Omaha in 1944. He died in July 1961.
She worked as an assistant buyer for a ladies fashion store in Omaha and later in the credit department of Sears Roebuck and Company. She married Fred C. Schmidt on Nov. 10, 1963. They traveled extensively and were active members of the Storm Lake Camera Club. He died in 1976. She was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake and enjoyed sharing presentations of her many travel photos with residents of area nursing homes.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Jerry and Barbara Hansen of Clearwater, Fla.; three grandchildren, Chrystal Stickney, Susan Clay, and Diana Hansen; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Wesley Lampe of Petersburg, Va.; a sister, Anna Belle Wacker of Bellevue, Iowa; two stepdaughters, Esther James and Iris Ramsey, both of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; five stepgrandchildren; nine stepgreat-granchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Helen Hagerstrand.
A memorial fund has been established.
Ruth M. Haugen
MOVILLE, Iowa - Ruth Mabel Haugen, 83, of Moville died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center in Kingsley.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Moville United Methodist Church in Moville with the Rev. Harold E. Werley officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at McCulloch Funeral Home in Moville.
Mrs. Haugen was born May 14, 1915, in Moville, the daughter of Rodney and Minnie M. (McElrath) Payne. She lived most of her life in the Moville area, and graduated from Moville High School. She lived for a while in Onawa, Iowa. She married Anton C. "Tony" Haugen on Dec. 1, 1945, in Kansas. The couple lived in Soldier, Iowa until 1951, when they moved back to Moville. She worked for a short time at the R.E.C. and Davy's and Jim's Feed Store in Moville. She also worked part time at the Meadows Golf Course in Moville.
She was a member of the Eastern Star in Moville and the Women's Golf League. She was also an active member of the Moville United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Charles and Susan Haugen of Sioux City, and Stan and Roxann Haugen of Moville; six grandchildren, Jenny Haugen, Jamie Haugen, Leah Knapp, Nick Haugen, Ryan Haugan, and Chris Haugen; a great-grandchild; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jay Payne and John Payne.
Pallbearers will be Jenny Haugen, Jamie Haugen, Leah Knapp, Cole Knapp, Nick Haugen, Jennifer Hans, Ryan Haugen, and Chris Haugen.
Rev. Duane W. Lukes
NORFORK, Neb. - Rev. Duane W. Lukes, 67, of Norfolk died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at St. Joseph's Nursing Home in Norfolk.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Norfolk with Archbishop Elden Francis Curtiss and priests of the Omaha Diocese officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today with a Scripture service and rosary at 7 p.m. at the church. Home for Funerals of Norfolk is in charge of the arrangements.
Rev. Lukes was born April 13, 1931, in Laurel, Neb., the son of William and Theresa (Mauch) Lukes. He graduated from Laurel High School. He then attended Conception Seminary at Conception, Mo. and St. Paul Seminary at St. Paul, Minn. He was ordained on May 11, 1957, in Omaha, Neb. He was assistant pastor at St. Stanislaus Parish in Omaha, St. Wenceslaus Parish in Dodge, Neb., St. Pius X Parish in Omaha, Holy Family Parish in Lindsay, Neb., St. Ann Parish in Omaha, and Sacred Heart Parish in Norfolk. He was pastor at St. William Parish in Niobrara, Neb., St. Edward Parish in St. Edward, Neb., and St. Mary's Parish in Osmond, Neb. Recently, he was chaplain at St. Joseph's Nursing Home and at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.
Survivors include two brothers, Claude of Palo Cedro, CA, and Kenneth of Santa Ana, Ca.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Kathryn M. Wilcox
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Kathryn M. Wilcox, 84, of Ida Grove died Friday at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove with the Rev. Gerald M. Fisch officating. Inurnment will be in the Danbury Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home of Ida Grove is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Wilcox was born Aug. 16, 1913, in Danbury, the daughter of John and Rose (King) Reimer. She attended country school in Danbury. She married Charles Chronister in 1943, in Portland, Ore. He died in 1947. She married Everett Wilcox in 1952. She was employed as a housekeeper at Horn Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Pat Greenburg of Portland, Linda and her husband, Russell Cozad, of The Colony, Texas, and Marcia Danielson of Odebolt, Iowa; two sons and their wives, Charles and Carolyn Chronister of Kansas City, and Leo and Penni Wilcox of Ida Grove; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, John Reimer; a sister, Ann Seuntjens; and a grandson, Bryan Cozad.
Wilma A. Karlson
ONAWA, Iowa - Wilma A. Strider Karlson, 73, of Onawa died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at Burgess Memorial Health Center in Onawa.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa. Burial will be in the Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.
Mrs. Karlson was born Nov. 27, 1924, in Springfield, Ill., the daughter of Willard and Virginia (Brandt) Holman. She graduated from St. Louis High School in St. Louis, Mo. She married Harold F. Strider Feb. 24, 1951, in St. Charles Mo. He died Feb. 9, 1968, in Kansas City. She lived in Auburn, Neb. and Elk Point, S.D. before moving to Onawa in 1960. She married Durward "Karl" Karlson on April 27, 1975, in Onawa. He died Nov. 12, 1986, in Onawa. She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa.
Survivors include three daughters, Pam and her husband, Chuck Thompson, of Ellettsville, Ind., Vicki Bell of Clarkston, Ga., and Jean and her husband, Scott Kendall, of Onawa; seven grandchildren, Brent and Sarah Thompson, Matthew, Amanda, and Brad Alford Bell, and Joseph and Samantha Kendall; a great-grandson; three sisters and their husbands, Jean and William Armstrong, and Marilyn and Al Kuechler, all of St. Louis, and Karen and Duane Dennis of Cedar Hill Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorials have been established in her name at Burgess Memorial Health Center and Faith Lutheran Church.
Clyde Eachen
SPENCER, Iowa - Clyde Eachen, 77, of Spencer, died Saturday at Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church in Spencer. Burial with military graveside services by the American Legion Glen Pedersen Post #1 will be in North Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Monday with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Melvin Conlon
SPENCER, Iowa - Melvin Conlon, 85, of Spencer died Friday at his home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon today with a vigil service at 7 p.m. at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Carl T. Benna
ALBERT CITY, Iowa - Carl T. Benna, 86, of Albert City died Wednesday at Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Albert City. Burial will be in Fairfield Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. today at Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City.
Maxine Whitewing
WINNEBAGO, Neb. - Maxine Jacqueline (Thomas) Whitewing, 87, of Winnebago died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at a Sioux City Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Augustine's Catholic Church with the Rev. Steve Boes officiating. Burial will be in the Winnebago Indian Cemetery. A traditional wake will be today with a rosary at 8 p.m. in the church basement. Winnebago Wake and Burial is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Whitewing was born Jan. 25, 1911, in Winnebago, Neb., the daughter of Henry and Annie (Earth) Thomas. She attended Haskell Indian School in Lawrence, Kan. from 1925 to 1928. She married Solomon Francis Whitewing on Oct. 15, 1940, in Winnebago. She lived in Wood, S.D., Alliance, Neb., and Hershey, Neb, and spent the majority of her life in Winnebago. She was a homemaker for her entire life. She was a member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church and St. Augustine's Altar Society.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Laura Whitewing and Donna Vandall, both of Winnebago; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two grandsons, Franklin and Jeffery; a brother and sister in infancy; five brothers, Fred Walker, Charles Harrison, Reuben Thomas, Ted Thomas and Waldo Thomas; and three sisters, Laura Thomas, Edna Thomas and Mordella Goodshield.
Pallbearers will be Stuart Snake, Scott Snake, Wayne Vandall, Taylor Bass, Charles Bumann and John W. Vandall.
