Thomas Hettinger
Thomas Hettinger, 45, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Richard Sitzmann, chaplain at Marian Health Center, officiating. There will be no visitation.

Mr. Hettinger was born Sept. 8, 1953, in Sioux City, the son of Francis and Iona (Anderson) Hettinger. He attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and graduated from Heelan High School in 1971.

He married Roxane Miller on Feb. 14, 1986, in Sioux City. He was employed as an auto glass installer.

He served as president of Floyd Slow-Pitch Softball Association in the earlier years.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Vanessa Hettinger; a sister and her husband, Lin and Brian Hardenbrook; two brothers and their wives, Richard and Mary and James and Philo; a grandmother, Edna Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Larry.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.

Gertrude Krenek

Gertrude Krenek, 100, of Columbia, Mo., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at Williamsburg Nursing Home in Columbia following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Columbia, with the Rev. John David Baker of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Columbia. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Krenek was born Sept. 12, 1898, in Mound, Texas, the daughter of John and Amanda Hearn. She attended Baylor University and taught school in Waco, Texas.

She married Rudolf F. Krenek on Sept. 12, 1923. He was a veterinarian with the Bureau of Animal Industry and was transferred to Sioux City in 1932. They retired and moved to Columbia in 1953. He died in 1974.

She was a Worthy Matron at Order of the Eastern Star Morningside Chapter 502. She was a member of Riparian, Iota Delphian, Tri Psi, Amphiction Study Clubs, First Baptist Church, Sneed Class, Tuesday Club, Margaret Elwang Circle of Kings Daughters and Federated Garden Club of Missouri, where she was a past president.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Peggy and Alden Noble of Sioux City; a son-in-law, Richard Padgham of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Katherine Holt of Nowata, Okla.; three grandchildren, Carol Padgham Albrecht, Alden Joel Noble and Elizabeth Noble Millard; and a great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elaine Padgham.

Hermenia Horton
Hermenia "Dutch" Horton, 91, of Perham, Minn., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at Perham Memorial Home.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. today at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Graveside services will follow the visitation in Hillside Cemetery, Merrill, Iowa. Minnasota arrangements are under the direction of Karvonen and Son Funeral Home of New York Mills, Minn.

Mrs. Horton was born May 23, 1907, in Sioux City, the daughter of Hermen M. and Anna Marie (Wacheldorf) Brouwer. She graduated from Central High School in 1925. She was employed as a bookkeeper in Sioux City for several years.

She married James "Ted" Horton on May 11, 1940, in Nashua, Iowa. The couple moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she worked as a bank teller. In 1956, they moved to rural Dent, Minn. He died March 26, 1975. She had been a resident of St. James Manor in Perham since August 1990.

Survivors include two sisters, Viola Bornholtz and Helen McNaughton, both of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Brouwer; and two sisters, Christina Taute and Gladys Sieh.

Pallbearers will be Tom Brouwer, Carmen and Von Bornholtz, Tom Horton, Eugene Taute, Kent Hansen and Harlan Woolworth.

Donald L. Gibson
Donald L. Gibson, 71, of Sioux City died Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Evangelical Free Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 8:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Vivian O. Niven
Vivian O. Niven, 79, of Sioux City died Tuesday at her residence following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Westlawn Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Howard D. Paxston
Howard D. Paxston, 65, of Sergeant Bluff died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at Embassey Care Center.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1973. The body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mr. Paxston was born May 31, 1933, in Morovia, Iowa, the son of Kenneth and Fern (Klingsmith) Paxston. He was raised in Centerville, Iowa. He had lived in Missouri and came to Sioux City in 1973.

He married Janina E. Skuya on Feb. 14, 1975, in Sioux City. She died July 11, 1993, in Sioux City. He was employed as a laborer.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne and Kenny, both of Centerville; a daughter, Yvonne D. Paxston of Ottumwa, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Jennie Anderson of Wakefield, Neb.; his father of Missouri; four brothers, Donald of Dallas, Texas, Ivan and Robert, both of Mineral Wells, Texas, and William of Davenport, Iowa; a sister, Shirley Clymers of Bloomfield, Colo.; and three grandchildren, Amber Seat, David and Steven Paxston.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Ruth N. Anderson
Ruth N. Anderson, 92, of East Greenwich, R.I., formerly of Sioux City and Homer, Neb., died Tuesday in East Greenwich.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Gilbert R. Wheelock
Gilbert R. Wheelock, 72, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Third Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Jim Nelson and E.D. Pappadackis officiating. Burial will in Elk Point Cemetery, Elk Point, S.D. Visitation will be 3 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Wheelock was born March 5, 1926, in Elk Point, the son of Orlando and Lorretta (Lemouges) Wheelock. He was raised in Elk Point and attended schools there.

He married Betty Lou Kneebone on June 6, 1948, in Elk Point. The couple moved to Sioux City. He was employed with Swift and Co. for 37 years.

He was a member of Third Presbyterian Church, Men's Club, where he was treasurer, and Third Presbyterian Church Cribbage Players. He served on the board of trustees. He was also a member of Swift Retirees and enjoyed fishing, hunting and bowling.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Dr. Douglas and Marilyn of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Cindy and Roger Johnson of Sioux City; three brothers, Bill of Kentland, Ind., Arlen of Sergeant Bluff and Ron and his wife, Shareil, of Sioux City; five sisters, Elaine Reitz of Sioux City, Shirley Cunningham of Sergeant Bluff, Pat McCarty and Gloria Johnson, both of Milwaukee, Wis., and Vicky and her husband, Larry Jurgenson, of Le Mars, Iowa; and five grandchildren, Lee, Adam and Barry Wheelock, Myles and Ross Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edgar, Barney and Howard "Coke"; and a sister, Viola.

Memorials may be directed to Third Presbyterian Church.

A. Dean Bornhoft
A. Dean Bornhoft, 68, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mark Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John Hagberg officiating. Burial will be in Sioux City at a later date. Visitation will be 2 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Bornhoft was born June 28, 1930, in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Claus Henry and Ella (Thiedemann) Bornhoft. He lived in Westside, Iowa, where he graduated from Westside Consolidated High School in 1948. He moved to Sioux City in 1950.

He married Patsy Stoelk on June 15, 1951, in Iowa. He was employed as a parts manager with Harry Batcheller's Farm Store since the early 1950s.

He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, Eagles Arie 77, American Legion Post 697, Siouxland Barber Shop Quartet and Siouxland Senior Center Quartet.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Cindy Houlihan of Sioux City and Nancy and her husband, Randy Rush, of Sergeant Bluff; a sister, Margaret Wiebers of Westside; four granddaughters, Erin Houlihan, Angela Baker, Rachel Dolezal and Becky Hauser; a great-grandchild; two stepgrandsons, Ryan and Brandon Rush; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Donald; and a sister, Rhita Korn.

Anna Van Steenwyk
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Anna Van Steenwyk, 70, of Artesia, Calif., formerly of Orange City, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at Downey Community Hospital in Downey, Calif.

Services will be at 5 p.m. today at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City, with the Rev. Timothy Ouwinga of First Christian Reformed Church officiating. Private burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Van Steenwyk was born March 14, 1928, in Orange City, the daughter of Jacob and Agnes (De Vries) Huizenga. She was raised in the Orange City area.

She married Ernest John Van Steenwyk and in 1965, they moved to California. She was employed as a nurse's aide in various hospitals. He died Jan. 21, 1991, in Santa Ana, Calif. She had been a resident of Artesia Christian Retirement Home for seven years.

She was a member of Rosewood Christian Reformed Church in Bellflower, Calif., and a former member of First Christian Reformed Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Debra Heinsma of Stanton, Calif., and Cheryl Van Steenwyk of Hinsdale, Ill.; a son and his wife, Scott and Cheryl of Rossmoor, Calif.; three grandchildren, Kent and Todd Heinsma and Lauren Van Steenwyk; two brothers and their wives, Otto and Marge Huizenga of Denver, Colo., and George and Jean Huizenga of Orange City; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Joan and Gerrit Spronk of Edgerton, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four children, Darrel, Dennis and stillborn twins; and a brother, Bernard Huizenga.

Memorials may be directed to Heritage House in Orange City.

Linnea Nygren
LAUREL, Neb. - Ruth Linnea Nygren, 103, of Laurel died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at Hillcrest Care Center in Laurel.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Concordia Lutheran Church in Concord, Neb., with the Rev. Duane Marburger officiating. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery. Visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Schumacher-Hasemann Funeral Home in Laurel.

Mrs. Nygren was born Aug. 31, 1895, in Wayne County, Neb., the daughter of Nels and Selma (Magnuson) Erickson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith. She attended rural school in Wayne County.

She married John Nygren on June 24, 1924, in rural Wayne County. The couple farmed near Laurel until moving to a farm near Concord. They retired and moved to Wayne, Neb., in 1956. He died in 1957. She moved to Norfolk, Neb., in 1960, and entered Hillcrest Care Center in June 1993.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Norfolk and enjoyed crocheting, embroidering and gardening.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Lowell and Pat of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Leora and Robert Hageman of Ithaca, Neb.; a son-in-law, Martin Decker of Boulder, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Hazel, a brother and two sisters.

Virgil V. Jenness
SANBORN, Iowa - Virgil V. Jenness, 76, of Sanborn, formerly of Cherokee County, Iowa, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today, with a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa, with the Rev. Richard R. Dunn officiating. Burial will be in Afton Township Cemetery, rural Cherokee, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars L.A. Wescott Post 2253.

Mr. Jenness was born Dec. 28, 1921, in Archer, Iowa, the son of Francis and Verna (McCorkel) Jenness. He graduated from Washta High School in 1941, and attended Trade School in Omaha, Neb. for six months. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945.

He married Evangalene Johnson on April 24, 1947, in Sioux City. He farmed for many years and also worked for Wilson Foods Corp. in Cherokee for over 17 years, retiring in 1983. He had been a resident of Sanborn for 33 years.

He was a member of United Church of Primghar, American Legion Post 36 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9129, both of Primghar, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Maureen and her husband, Dave Lee, and Darla Jenness, all of Sioux City; a son, Marvin of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three grandchildren, Matthew, Melinda and Joshua Lee; a great-granddaughter; three brothers and their wives, Merritt and Velma of Marcus, Iowa, Howard and Berna of Cherokee and Marlin and Carla of Le Mars, Iowa; three sisters, Ruby and her husband, Lester Webb, of Cherokee, Geraldine Roby of Aurelia, Iowa, and Lois Pflugrad of Post Angeles, Wash.; two sisters-in-law, Armeda Jenness of Kingsley, Iowa, and Marcella Jenness of Primghar; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Oliver and Erwin; a sister, Reta Fuhrman; a brother and sister in infancy; and two brothers-in-law, Paul Roby and August Fuhrman.

Hilda A. Kollbaum
ANTHON, Iowa - Hilda A. Kollbaum, 83, of Anthon died Wednesday at Sunrise Retirement Home in Sioux City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Norma E. Hammer
HOLSTEIN, Iowa - Norma Emma Hammer, 74, of Holstein died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein, with the Rev. Curtis Benson officiating. Burial will be in Holstein Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Barker Funeral Home in Holstein.

Mrs. Hammer was born June 1, 1924, in Holstein, the daughter of Rudolph and Elsie (Weber) Arp. She graduated from Holstein High School in 1941, and attended Commerical Extension School in Omaha, Neb. She was employed with Storm Lake PCA at the branch office in Ida Grove, Iowa, for five years.

She married Lewis A. Hammer on Aug. 31, 1946, in Cherokee, Iowa. The couple farmed for 42 years. He died in February 1998.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Paggy and Don Johannsen of Rickardsville, Iowa, and Jane and Don Breyfogle of Holstein; a son and his fiancee, John and Sherry Knutson of Flandreau, S.D.; three grandsons, Christopher, Matthew and Joseph Johannsen; three sisters, Norine Lorenzen of Holstein, Dorothy and her husband, Lloyd Henderson and Mary and her husband, Delbert Shever, all of Cushing, Iowa; two brothers and their wives, Harold and Sharlotte of Holstein and Harlan and Sandra of Salem, Ore.; two sisters-in-law, Della Zahler of Vancouver, Wash., and Rachel Hammer of Ida Grove; a brother-in-law, Wesley Husted of Battle Creek, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Wilmina Smit
HULL, Iowa - Wilmina Smit, 72, of Hull died Wednesday at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Reformed Church in Hull. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.
