Alice H. Arnold, 76, of Sioux City died Friday at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Covenant Church. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present 7 to 9 p.m. and a prayer service at 8:30 p.m., at Nelson Berger Northside Chapel.

Doris M. Beacom
Doris M. Beacom, 78, of Sioux City died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998 at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998 at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. John Meyer and the Rev. Kathy Wicks officiating. The body was cremated. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Beacom was born Jan. 22, 1920 in Royal, Iowa the daughter of Henry George and Clauden D. (Hagedorn) Suggitt. She attended Sioux City Central High School. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Morningside College in 1973 and her Masters from the University of Iowa in 1981. She was employed as a social worker for the State of Iowa. Prior to that, she operated Chubs Grocery.

She married Swen Anderson June 29, 1938 in Le Mars, Iowa.

She married George Beacom in 1954 in Elk Point, S.D. He died in 1957.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. She helped Gov. Harold Hughes start the program, I.C.A.P. for the State of Iowa. She was a co-founder of Siouxland Council on Alcoholism.

Survivors include three sons and their wives, Wyman and Ethelmaye Anderson of Sioux City and Bill and Linda Anderson and Joseph and Roxann Beacom all of Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter, Karen Anderson of Hawthorne, Calif.; one brother, Arley and his wife Jenice of Sioux City; four grandchildren Cheryl, Debra, Erik and Kristen and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Tom and one daughter, Dorothy Ann Anderson and two sisters Irma Moss and Vivian Hogan.

William R. Curry
William R. Curry, 35, of South Sioux City died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 at his residence.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home with the Rev. Phil Cleigh officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Curry was born April 5, 1963 in Galesburg, Ill., the son of Donald R. and Lillian (Bishop) Curry. He moved to the Siouxland area in 1993.

He married Zoe A. DeVall on Sept. 16, 1995 in Sioux City. He was employed as a meat cutter for Cub Foods and was a T-ball assistant coach at the Floyd Softball Complex.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert and Daniel of Crystal, N.D.; two stepsons, David and Jememy DeVall of South Sioux City; his father of Illinois; his mother, Lillian Crawford of Yuma, Ariz.; two half brothers, Terry Smith and Edward Smith; one sister and one granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be Dan Fralick, Matt Thompson, Victor Samaniego, Steve Hinderman, Gary Blynberg and Dan Lueck.

Lloyd Greenfield
Lloyd Greenfield, 87, former Sioux City resident died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998 at his home in Florissant, Mo.

Services were held Saturday at Dindot-Klusmann Funeral Home in Lennox, S.D. Burial was in the Lennox Cemetery.

Mr. Greenfield was born March 26, 1911 in Lennox. He graduated from Lennox High School in 1929.

He married Caroline Richter on June 27, 1939 in Lennox. They lived in Sioux City where he was employed at Sears and later was in partnership with Warm Air Clinic. They moved to Florissant when he retired.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter and her husband, Cynthia and The Rev. Douglas McGraw of St. Louis, Mo.; two grandchildren; three brothers, Arthur L. of Rapid City, S.D., Dr. Duane L. and Dr. Russell E. both of Sioux Falls, S.D. and one sister, Luella Wieting of Sioux Falls.

John Gordon Graning
John Gordon Graning, 73, formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998 in Lake Cypress Springs, Texas.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Lukes Episcopal Church, 5923 Royal Lane in Dallas, with the Rev. Johnny Cook officiating.

Mr. Graning was born July 28, 1925 in Sioux City. He attended Oklahoma A & M and Morningside College. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He married Molly Clark in 1947. He was associated with Thorpe & Company Jewelers in Sioux City until 1950 when he joined R. Wallace & Sons Silversmiths in Meriden, Conn. He became National Sales Manager for Lenox China- Melamine Division in St. Louis, Mo. in 1962. In 1966, he formed a partnership in Dallas known as James and Graning Manufacturers Representatives.

He was a member of St. Lukes Epsicopal Church in Dallas and a past member of Kiwanis, Toastmasters International and the Housewares Club.

Survivors include his wife; one son and his wife, Gary and Sandra of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter and her husband, Karen and David Sipes of The Colony, Texas; three grandsons, Gary Graning of Lexington, Mo. and David and John Dustin Sipes of The Colony; two great-grandsons; one sister and her husband Janice and Robert Walton of DeForest, Wis. and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to St. Lukes Church, the American Cancer Society or the charity of choice.

Doris O. Jorgensen
Doris O. Jorgensen, 77, of Sioux City died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 at a Sioux City hospital after a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Nathan C. Houfek officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Jorgensen was born Nov. 23, 1921 in Sioux City, the daughter of William and Lucy (Holbrook) LeClair. She graduated from Cathedral High School.

She married Orval D. Jorgensen Sept. 15, 1944 in Sioux City. She worked at Sioux City Battery for 10 years and St. Luke's Regional Medical Center for 12 years, retiring in 1985.

She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband; four sons, Stephen of Sioux City, Rev. Philip and his wife Karmen of Slater, Iowa, John and his wife Mary of Forest City, Iowa and Randy and his wife Mary of Sioux City; two daughters and their husbands, Suzanne and Mark Schmitt of Sergeant Bluff and Jeanne and Bret Fritch of Lakeville, Minn.; four brothers, Albert of Sioux City, William and his wife Delores of Sioux City, Donald of Onawa and Lawrence and his wife Pat of Sioux City; one sister, Cora and her husband Robert Petersen of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Emma Barclay and Luella Fiscus.

Pallbearers will be Christopher L., Christopher M., Joseph and Joshua Jorgensen; Jeff Stanwick and Jerry Stanwick.

Grace Olsen
Grace Olsen, 81, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998.

A memorial service was held Friday in Naples, Fla. There will be a memorial service at Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City next spring.

Mrs. Olsen was born in Korea on Jan. 2, 1917, where her parents were missionaries.

She married Elwood Olsen. They moved to Naples in 1978.

She was an active alumnus of Morningside College. She served on the boards of the Sioux City Public Library, Young Women's Christian Association, Boys and Girls Home Family Services, and Woodbury County Republican Women's organizations.

Survivors include three children, Ty of Chicago, Ill., Le and Chris of Sioux City, and eight grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to HOSPICE of Naples, Naples United Church of Christ or Alzheimers Association of Naples.

Viola M. Schenk
Viola M. Schenk, 75, of Sioux City died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998 at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, in the Calvin Chapel, with the Rev. Don Cameron officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Park Cemetery, with a private family graveside service on Tuesday. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Schenk was born May 27, 1923 in Sioux City, the daughter of August and Amelia (Larsen) Sabo. She was employed at Wincharger Corporation for several years.

She married William Schenk Jr. on June 13, 1940 in Dakota City. He died June 20, 1988 in Emerson, Neb.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a former member of Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include one son, Paul of Pueblo, Colo.; two daughters, Suzanne of Sioux City and Shirley of Yucaipa, Calif.; one sister, Em Sabo of Florida and three grandchildren, Karen, Jason and Kelvin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Brian; one daughter, Cheryl; two brothers, Ray and Carl and one sister, Lil McEntaffer.

Susan H. Smith
Susan H. Smith, 84, of Sioux City died Friday at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home Chapel. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

James Vance Summerlin
James Vance Summerlin, 78, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Services will be held privately by the family. His body was cremated. Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Summerlin was born May 5, 1920 in Durham, N.C. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II.

He married Beverly Seaton in Sioux City in 1944. They made their home in Sioux City. He worked at Knapp and Spencer. His latest employment was at Knoepfler Chevrolet.

He enjoyed football. He took great pride in his gardens and flowers.

Survivors include his wife, four sons, David, Russell, Douglas and Lance; four daughters, Rosemary, Myra, Debborah and Teresa; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Charlotte L. Thayer
Charlotte Lorraine Thayer, 79, of Sioux City died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Morningside Church of Christ with Pastor David B. Haynes officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 3 p.m., at Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Mrs. Thayer was born Sept. 2, 1919 in Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of William Eden and Evelyn (Corona) Cowell. She moved to Sioux City in 1936. She graduated from Central High School in 1936.

She married Frank A. Thayer on July 2, 1936 in Elk Point, S.D. He died Nov. 20, 1982 in Sioux City. She was a housekeeper at Gordon Memorial Hospital. Prior to retirement, she worked at Westwood Convalescent and Rest Home.

She was a member of Morningside Church of Christ, Mended Hearts and Trimble Upper Classmen.
Survivors include four daughters, Kay and her husband Frank Moffatt of Sioux City, Frances Jones of Las Vegas, Nev., Patty and her husband Darwin Sturtevant and Cleo and her husband Carl Peterson all of Sioux City; eight grandchildren, Greg, Evelyn, Wayne, Tommy, Jeff, Jennifer, Danny and Laurie; eight great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two infant brothers.

Sherry L. Thompson
Sherry L. Thompson, 58, of Sioux City died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 at her home after a sudden illness.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Christy-Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. E.D. Pappadackis officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Thompson was born May 3, 1940 in Crofton, Neb., the daughter of Clarence and Florence (Zurcher) Rager. She attended Sioux City schools and graduated from Central High School in 1958.

She married Duane Thompson in Sioux City in 1958. She was employed at Iowa Beef Products for over 32 years.

She was a member of Local 222, United Food and Commercial Workers Union.

Survivors include her mother, Florence White of Sioux City; one son, Steven of Lincoln, Neb.; one brother, Rev. Wayne L. of Canton, S.D. and two grandchildren, Amanda and Randi both of Sioux City and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Esther I. Bailey
Esther I. Bailey, 91, of Sioux City died Saturday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Earl W. Rockwood
Earl W. Rockwood, 86, of Sioux City died Friday; Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Marion E. Warfield
Marion E. Warfield, 96, of Sioux City died Saturday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Ruth Marie Byers
HARTLEY, Iowa - Ruth Marie Byers, 96, of Hartley died Saturday at Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Warner Funeral Home in Hartley. Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation will begin 5 p.m. today, with the family present 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home.

Rose Jane Johnson
MAPLETON, Iowa - Rose Jane Johnson, 81, of Mapleton died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton with the Rev. Bob Fritzmeier officiating. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery in Castana, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Johnson was born Sept. 28, 1917 in Riverside, Neb., the daughter of Harry and Rose (Lamphier) Cady.

She married Everett Johnson in Sioux City on Oct. 24, 1938. She worked at Maple Heights Nursing Home for more than 10 years. He died in 1979.

Survivors include two sons, John and his wife Sandy of Sergeant Bluff and Jack of Mapleton; one daughter-in-law, Betty Weikel of Sergeant Bluff; three brothers, George of Valentine, Neb., Bill of Woodlake, Neb. and Lyle of Passaic, N.J.; one sister, Pearl Smith of Kansas City; five grandchildren, Gary and Chris Weikel, Jeff, Angie and Johnny Johnson and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Charles; four sisters and two brothers.

Elmer Koster
ROYAL, Iowa - Elmer Koster, 68, of Royal died Friday at the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal. Burial will be at Willow Creek Cemetery. Visitation will begin 3 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.

Neleta Ruth Major
SPENCER, Iowa - Neleta Ruth Major, 86, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998 at the Spencer Hospital after a lengthy illness.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998 in the chapel of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.

Mrs. Major was born Oct. 20, 1912 in Burwell, Neb., the daughter of Asa and Beulah (Chambers) Anderson. She received her education in Burwell, graduating in 1930. She graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan College in Lincoln in 1934.

She married the Rev. Everett R. Major on Dec. 25, 1936 in Burwell. They lived in Memphis, Troy and Chelsea, Mich. and Ottumwa, Anamosa, Kingsley, Rock Rapids, Jesop and Onawa, Iowa. She taught school while living in Kingsley and Rock Rapids. They retired in 1973 and moved to Sioux City. He died November 1983. She moved with her daughter to Spencer in 1993.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the PEO in Spencer. She loved baking, crocheting and playing the piano.

Survivors include one son and his wife, Glenn and Nancy of Atlantic, Iowa; two daughters and their husbands, Nora and Richard Biegler of Spencer and Kay and David Dunkelberger of St. Paul, Minn.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one brother, Donald of Burwell.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Asa Jr., and one son, Paul.

Madonna Ryan
MILFORD, Iowa - Madonna Ryan, 74, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford with the Rev. James Bruch officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. in St. Ann's Cemetery in Vail, Iowa.

Mrs. Ryan was born July 27, 1924 at Vail, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Gertrude Maher. She graduated from St. Ann's High School in Vail.

She married Pat Ryan on Sept. 1, 1947. They lived in Omaha until 1970 when they moved to Sioux City where they owned the Sioux City Building Supply. They retired to Lake Okoboji in 1985. He died in October 1992.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Milford.

Survivors include one son and his wife, Jim and Kathy of San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren, Kim, Coleen and Sean; three brothers, Ed of Denison, Gene of Fort Dodge and Jim of Peoria, Ill. and two sisters, Dorothy Hurley and Joann Lelans both of Omaha.

Lillian F. Stone
ARTHUR, Iowa - Lillian F. Stone, 55, of Arthur died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998 at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Arthur United Methodist Church with the Rev. W. Michael Biklen and the Rev. Roslyn Gunnink officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. in the Marathon Cemetery. Visitation will be after noon Monday, with the family present 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.

Mrs. Stone was born Aug. 29, 1943 in Fairmont, Minn., the daughter of Howard and Marjorie (Gregerson) Strayer. She grew up in the Hartley, Iowa area.

She was married to Donald L. Stone on Jan. 7, 1962 in Hartley.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Arthur and the United Methodist Women. Shs and their husbands, Donna Jean and Arnie Jobes of Boise, Idaho, Marjorie and Dr. Terry Baldwin of Muscatine, Iowa, and Judy and George Lange of Lorimor.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl and David Schroeter and one grandchild.

Mabel Thompson
HARRIS, Iowa - Mabel Thompson, 76, of Harris died Friday at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Harris. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 2 to 4 p.m., at the funeral home.
