Gordon Taft
Gordon Taft, 78, of West Liberty, Ohio, formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Green Hills Center in West Liberty.
Services were held Saturday, Dec. 5, at Evergreen Baptist Church in Michigan City, Ohio. Burial was in Posey Chapel Cemetery, LaPorte, Ohio. Arrangements were under the direction of Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel of Michigan City.
Sherry L. Thompson
Sherry L. Thompson, 58, of Sioux City died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at her home following a sudden illness.
Services will be 1 p.m. today at Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. E.D. Pappadackis officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Thompson was born May 3, 1940, in Crofton, Neb., the daughter of Clarence and Florence (Zurcher) Rager. She attended Sioux City schools and graduated from Central High School in 1958.
She married Duane Thompson in 1958 in Sioux City, They later were divorced.
She was employed at Iowa Beef Products for more than 32 years.
She was a member of Local 222, United Food and Commercial Workers Union.
Survivors include her mother, Florence White of Sioux City; a son, Steven of Lincoln, Neb.; a brother, the Rev. Wayne L. Rager of Canton, S.D.; two grandchildren, Amanda and Randi; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father; a sister, Pat Clark; and her longtime companion, Robert Wanderscheid.
Sister Mary Helen
Goebel, O.S.B.
Sister Mary Helen Goebel, O.S.B., 78, of Sioux City died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Spirit Retirement Chapel, with the Rev. Gerald A. Hartz officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Sister Geobel was born June 18, 1920, in Sioux City, the daughter of John and Helen (Gordon) Goebel. She graduated from Cathedral High School in Sioux City.
She entered the Order of Sisters of St. Benedict in 1940 and professed in 1943.
She was employed at St. Vincent Hospital in the dietary department and was the hospital sacristan.
Survivors include a sister, Eleanor Demaru of Las Vegas, Nev.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Torrance Eagle Track
Torrance Lewis Eagle Track, 21, of Sioux City died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in Walthill, Neb., with Elmer Running officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be at the residence of Olive Wood in Walthill. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh Funeral Home in Walthill.
Mr. Eagel Track was born Dec. 5, 1977, in Winnebago, Neb., the son of Patrick and Charlotte (Drapeau) Eagle Track. He attended Sioux City Public Schools.
Following graduation, he was employed in construction.
Survivors include a son, Joshua Torrance Lewis Eagle Track II of Sioux City; his parents of Sioux City; five sisters, Marcia and her husband, Frank Ramirez, Frances DeCora and Cheryl, Theresa and Trisha Eagle Track; a brother, Virgil Stricker; maternal grandmother, Olive Wood of Walthill; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a great-grandmother, Clara (Hallowell) Drapeau; and paternal grandparents, Isaac and Ethel Eagle Track.
Jeffrey Johannes
Jeffrey Johannes, 20, of Sioux City died Monday; Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Emil Lux
HARTLEY, Iowa - Emil Lux, 92, of Hartley died Monday at Primghar Care Center in Primghar, Iowa.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hartley. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Warner Funeral Home in Hartley.
William L. Christensen
LAWTON, Iowa - William L. Christensen, 73, of Lawton died Sunday at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Graceland Park Cemetery. There will be no vistation. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
George A. Wick
SIBLEY, Iowa - George Alvin Wick, 88, of Sibley died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Sibley, with the Rev. Timothy J. Hogan officiating. Burial will be in St. Andrew's Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m., a Catholic Daughters of America rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m., all at Walton, Roste and Vogel Funeral Home in Sibley.
Mr. Wick was born Aug. 18, 1910, in Harlan, Iowa, the son of Stoddard and Mary (Evans) Wick. He graduated from high school as valedictorian in Bigelow, Minn.
He worked in Sibley for Alex Tossini, Walton Furniture and was a self-employed carpet layer.
He married Helen Truckenmiller and they settled in Sibley.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945.
He was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Osceola County Historical Society. He served on the Public Library board and the review committee for Sibley Care Center. He was a volunteer in the Sibley community and enjoyed woodworking, caning chairs and canning vegetables.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Wick of Sibley, Sister Margaret Wick, OSF, of Sioux City and Julie and her husband, Randy Fox, of Papillion, Neb.; four sons and their wives, Jim and Mary of Sioux Falls, S.D., Tom and Judy of Clinton, Iowa, Paul and Nancy of Everly, Iowa, and Steve and Kim of Le Mars, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Stacia, Dan, Virginia, Katy, Joe, Emily and Ray Wick and Jessica and Amy Fox; and three sisters, Marilyn Hall of Mesa, Ariz., Verlee Lansbarkis of Kewanee, Ill., and Avonelle Poppen of Long Beach, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Michael; a brother; and four sisters.
Martha L. Fett
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Martha Lucy Fett, 71, of Storm Lake died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alta, Iowa, with the Rev. Kevin Huss officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
Mrs. Fett was born Feb. 23, 1927, in Lincoln Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Anna (Gerke) Boettcher. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended Zion Lutheran School, rural Storm Lake.
She married Vernon Albert Fett on Jan. 27, 1946, in Storm Lake. The couple farmed in Cherokee County for 40 years. She was employed as a nurse's aid with Kjolhede and Border Nursing Home in Alta and at Methodist Manor, Buena Vista County Hospital and Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake. She retired in 1990.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She served as secretary and treasurer of the PTA at St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover, Iowa. She enjoyed growing flowers and playing cards.
Survivors include a son and his wife, the Rev. Larry and Margaret of Le Mars, Iowa; two sisters, Marie Franzmeier of Storm Lake and Alma Hogrefe of Albert City, Iowa; four grandchildren, April, Jeffrey, Terry and Timothy Fett; a sister-in-law, Alice Cross of Spencer, Iowa; and a brother and sister-in-law, L.D. and Mildred Cook of Mountain Home, Ark.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three brothers-in-law, Tom Cross, Emil Hogrefe and Bill Franzmeier.
Pallbearers will be Gerald Radke, Lloyd Boettcher, Larry Otto, Lynn Johnson, Ronald Hoops and Mike Radke.
Clarence Staum
ELK POINT, S.D. - Clarence Staum, 87, of Elk Point died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Elk Point, with the Rev. Mary Feistner officiating. Burial will be in Elk Point Cemetery. Visitation will be noon to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Anderson Funeral Home in Elk Point.
Mr. Staum was born Oct. 16, 1911, near Elk Point, the son of Casper and Anna (Ulvog) Staum. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
He graduated from Elk Point High School in 1930 and attended National Business Training School in Sioux City.
He was employed at the Princess and Capital Theaters for two years.
He married Yvonne Bosse of Jefferson, S.D., on Aug. 31, 1933. The couple farmed in the Elk Point area for 47 years. Following their retirement, they moved into Elk Point.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he was a trustee, the Rural Richland School Board, Farmers Elevator board, and Union County Farm Bureau, where he served as insurance agent and adjuster. He also helped organize the Dudes and Dolls Square Dance Club in Elk Point. He enjoyed camping and hunting.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Dwayne and Erna of Medford, Ore., and Darmon and Kay of Elk Point; three grandchildren, Julie Moore, David Staum and Teresa Anderson; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Norma Ofstehage of Vermillion, S.D.; and a brother, Lt. Vern Staum, USA (retired) of Marietta, Ga.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Art; a sister, Gladys Eggen; and a great-grandson.
Fernando L. Bernal
PRIMGHAR, Iowa - Fernando L. Bernal, 81, of Primghar died Saturday at Baum-Harmon Hospital in Primghar.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Church of Christ in Primghar. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Primghar.
Cecilia Samson
BANCROFT, Neb. - Cecilia Samson, 100, of Bancroft died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at Pender Care Centre in Pender, Neb.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bancroft, with the Rev. Terry Daberkow officiating. Burial will be in Bancroft Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Munderloh Funeral Home in Bancroft.
Mrs. Samson was born July 22, 1898, near Bancroft, the daughter of Nicolai M. and Rosamaine E. (Diedrichsen) Sorensen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
She married Maurice H. Samson on March 8, 1916. The couple farmed in the Bancroft and Rosalie, Neb., area for many years. She operated the Rosalie Highway Cafe for several years. He died Nov. 16, 1956. She entered Pender Care Centre in April 1995.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, Altar Guild, St. Paul's Quilters, Garden Club, Bridge Club, Friendship Club in Rosalie and Bancroft Senior Center. She taught Sunday School for many years. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and playing her harmonica.
Survivors include four children, Everna Bingham of Dixon, Neb., Vernon and his wife, Fritzie of Evansville, Ind., Glenn and his wife, Joan, of Lusby, Md., and Donald and his wife, Marie, of Walthill, Neb.; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen LaRandeau; an infant grandchild, a great-grandchild, eight brothers, five sisters, and a half sister.
Marvin G. Hansen
EARLY, Iowa - Marvin G. Hansen, 86, of Tahlequah, Okla., formerly of Early, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at Med. Center, Go Ye Village in Tahlequah.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church in Early. Burial will be in Early Union Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be Wednesday evening at Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Early.
Mr. Hansen was born Sept. 16, 1912, near Sherburn, Minn., the son of Carl T. and Alma M.E. Hansen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
He attended country school near Sherburn and Jackson, Minn. He graduated from Odebolt (Iowa) High School in 1930 and attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for two years.
He married Gladyce E. Carlson on July 27, 1936. The couple lived in Odebolt, Ida Grove, Early and Storm Lake, Iowa, Jackson, Minn. and Tahlequah for two years.
He served in the Armed Forces during World War II in the European Theater. Following his discharge, he returned to Sac County, where he became the county assessor until 1949. He was then employed with Early Savings Bank, where he became president in 1967.
He was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Odebolt, Faith Lutheran Church, Early, St. John Lutheran Church, Storm Lake and was a member of First Lutheran Church in Tahlequah. He served as president of Group I in Northwest Iowa and Northwest Iowa Bank Auditors and Comptrollers. He enjoyed golfing and helped organize the Sac County and Country Club.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Dr. Daniel L. and Jane of Tahlequah; and two grandchildren, Dr. Douglas P. Hansen and Heather Hansen Lyell.
Ford W. Joy
CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa - Ford Wellington Joy, 89, of Correctionville died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church in Correctionville, with the Rev. Consorcia Sanchez officiating. Burial will be in Correctionville Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Barker Funeral Home in Correctionville.
Mr. Joy was born Oct. 7, 1909, in Correctionville, the son of Clarence and Nellie (Barnes) Joy. He attended rural schools in the Cushing, Iowa, area.
He married Fern Zupp on Aug. 23, 1944. The couple farmed in the Pierson, Iowa, and Correctionville area, until retiring and moving into Correctionville in 1973. She died in 1982.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and enjoyed playing cards.
Survivors include four daughters, Cheryl and her husband, Merle Hinkhouse, of Thorton, Colo., Connie and her husband, Dick Mead, of Tyler, Texas, Barbara Joy of Correctionville and Glenda and her husband, Mike Bottjen, of West Des Moines; a son, Bryan of Altoona, Fla.; a sister, Wilma Krantz of Cushing; seven grandchildren, Jeff Hinkhouse, Dawn Lavelle, Jason and Janna Mead, Joshua and Jeremiah Bottjen and Christine Bolkema; five great-grandchildren; a former daughter-in-law, Tammy Sobieski of Deland, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Anna Joy of Correctionville and Mildred Joy of Aurelia, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant son; two infant grandsons, Justin and Jory Mead; two brothers, Lee and Loren; four sisters, Elsie Roche, Lola Fitch, Vinnie Foster and Mary Wonder; and a special friend, Eleanor Anderson.
