Murel L. Kleinberg
Murel L. Kleinberg, 91, of South Sioux City died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. John Meyer officiating. Burial will be in City Cemetery, Wynot, Neb. Visitation will be 1 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kleinberg was born Sept. 21, 1907, in Wynot, the daughter of William J. and Ida J. (Hollister) Gowery.

She married John P. Kleinberg on May 14, 1927, in Dakota City. The couple farmed in Dixon County, Neb. for 40 years. He died Oct. 1, 1983, in Sioux City. She moved to South Sioux City in July 1984.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church and the church circle.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty M. Barker of South Sioux City; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons Eric, Darren and Garry Jacobson, Steve and Jesse Olson, Mike and Mark Huggenberger, Brandon and Tom Sands.

Cleo R. Etheridge
Cleo "Coke" Etheridge, 86, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, in Sioux City following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Riverside United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William Cotten officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8:30 p.m. today at Berkemier Funeral Home.

Mr. Etheridge was born Oct. 16, 1912, in Beering, N.D., the son of Drew and Della (Goodwine) Etheridge. He moved to Sioux City with his family in 1918. He attended Sioux City schools. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in the South Pacific and New Guinea.

He was a member of Riverside United Methodudist Church and Disabled American Veteran Chapter 54.

Survivors include a brother, Roy Etheridge of Chesterton, Md.

Pallbearers will be Frank Hewett, Denise Warren, Milton, Robert, Todd and Chuck Powell.

Cornelius Dykstra
Cornelius "Case" Dykstra, 85, of Sioux City died Tuesday at his residence.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Vistiation will be 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Tia E.L. Fletcher
Tia Elizabeth Lee Fletcher, infant daughter of Kevin L. and Shelia J. (Jackson) Fletcher of Sioux City, was stillborn Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Malone A.M.E. Church, with the Rev. John Blackmon officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Survivors include her parents; a brother, K. Anthony Lee Flecther at home; paternal grandmother, Lillian Fletcher of Sioux City; maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Jackson of Houston, Texas; and paternal great-grandmother, Winifred Davis of Sioux City.

Pallbearer will be at Jason and Justin Smith.

Anna Elbaum
Anna Bernstein Elbaum, 89, of Sioux City died Wednesday at a Sioux City nursing home.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Carmel Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Helen L. Gilmore
Helen L. Gilmore, 94, of Sioux City died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:45 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Chapel, with the Rev. Gerald A. Hartz officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Vistiation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at Holy Spirit Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Gilmore was born June 10, 1904, in Webb, Iowa, the daughter of Frank L. and Clara A. (Hagerty) Gowen. She graduated from Spencer (Iowa) High School in 1922. She moved to Sioux City in 1923 and graduated from Morningside College in 1927.

She married Roy Gilmore on Sept. 15, 1934, in South Sioux City. He died June 2, 1965, in Sioux City. She was employed as a social worker with Family Services for 27 years, prior to her association with Easter Seal Society for seven years. She retired in 1977.

She was a member of Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament and enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and Linwood Gowen; a sister, Lucy Derham; and a niece.

Harold Wasson
Harold Wasson, 83, of Sioux City died Wednesday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

William L. Christensen
LAWTON, Iowa - William L. Christensen, 73, of Lawton died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Graceland Park Cemetery, with the Rev. E.D. Pappadackis, retired from Third Presbyterian Church, officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Christensen was born April 7, 1925 in Sioux City, the son of James and Ruth (Gibson) Christensen. He graduated from Lawton High School. He lived in Lawton except for five years that he lived in California, then returned to Lawton.

He married Maurgaret Heath in 1990 in Iowa. He farmed in the Lawton area.

Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, Danny and Ann of Long Beach, Calif., Rodney and Cyndi of Chewelah, Wash., and Tim and Pamela of Buford, Ga.; a daughter and her husband, Roberta and Jim Walker of Moreno Valley, Calif.; two sisters, Elsie Owen of Mountain View, Calif., and Betty Stublarek of Novato, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Harry and James.

Julian Galbraith
NEWELL, Iowa - Julian Galbraith, 94, of Newell died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Newell.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Newell. Burial will be in Newell Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday at Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Newell.

Verda I. Wirtz
SPENCER, Iowa - Verda I. Wirtz, 87, of Spencer died Wednesday at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Warner Funeral Chapel in Spencer. Burial will be at a later date in Dickens Cemetery, Dickens, Iowa. There will be no visitation.

Peter E. Blom
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Peter E. Blom, 85, of Orange City died Wednesday at Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. Burial will be prior to the service in West Lawn Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Richard J. Mahn
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Richard John "Dick" Mahn, 68, of Storm Lake died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, with the Rev. Duane C. Queen officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery, rural Meriden, Iowa, with military rites conducted by Amvets Post 66 of Storm Lake. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Mr. Mahn was born Jan. 9, 1930, in Cherokee, Iowa, the son of William "Skeeter" and Nina (Olson) Mahn. He attended schools in Minnesota and Iowa, graduating from Meriden High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a staff sergeant during the Korean War.

He married E. Ruth Nordstrom on April 6, 1952, in Cherokee. The couple lived in El Paso, Texas, Cherokee and moved to Storm Lake in February 1959. He was a retired U.S.D.A. meat inspector and during his retirement years worked for Buena Vista County.

He was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and deacon. He was a former member of Storm Lake Lions Club and Hi Noon Kiwanis. He was a volunteer driver for Veteran patients needing transportation to Veteran Medical Centers.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Karen and her husband, Mark Wernimont of Sac City, Iowa, Vicki Westergard of Omaha, Neb., Judy and her husband, Brian Hiscocks, of Britt, Iowa, and Lanette and her husband, Tony Stone, of Dakota City; a son and his wife, Richard D. and Teresa of Pflugerville, Texas; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial fund has been established.

Gertrude Nagel
DOON, Iowa - Gertrude (Laackmann) Nagel, 92, of Rock Valley, Iowa, formerly of Doon, died Tuesday at Valley Manor Nursing Home in Rock Valley.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alvord, Iowa. Burial wll be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

William A. Canby
MACY, Neb. - William August Canby formerly of Macy died Monday at Lancaster Manor in Lincoln, Neb.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Alfred W. Gilpin Building in Macy. Burial will be in Omaha Indian Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh Funeral Home of Pender, Neb.

Irene C. Andersen
CHEROKEE, Iowa - Irene C. Andersen, 83, of Cherokee died Wednesday at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Aurelia, Iowa. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Leo Long
MILFORD, Iowa - Lawrence Leo Long, 92, of Milford died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at his residence.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Milford. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Turner Funeral Home in Milford.

Mr. Long was born April 19, 1906, in Milford, the son of Lawrence and Mathilda (Hoffer) Long. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Milford and graduated from Milford High School in 1925.

He married Esther Dorenkamper on Oct. 30, 1934, in Ivanhoe, Minn. He farmed near Milford until retiring and moving into Milford.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and enjoyed football and baseball.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Janice and Donald Charnecki of Fairmont, Minn., and Mavis and Dennis Gruhlke of Fridley, Minn.; a son and his wife, Valgene and LaJean of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Danna Groenewold, Monte Gruhlke, Rochelle Odegaard, Chris Long and Dustin Gruhlke; four great-grandchildren; two stepgrandsons; and two brothers, Charles of California and Roy of Montana.

He was preceded in death by his wife, an infant daughter, four brothers and four sisters.

Gladys Bosley
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Gladys Bosley, 90, of Storm Lake, formerly of Alta, Iowa, died Tuesday at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home in Alta. Burial will be in Elk Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time today, with the family present 1 to 2 p.m., at the funeral home.

John G. Riibe
McCOOK LAKE, S.D. - John George Riibe, 67, of McCook Lake died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, in McCook Lake following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Berkemier Funeral Home in Sioux City, with the Rev. William Cotten of Riverside United Methodist Church officiating. The body was cremated. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Riibe was born Feb. 15, 1931, in Santee, Neb., the son of Minor and Edith (Dooley) Riibe. He moved to Sioux City as a young adult. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, then returned to Sioux City.

He married Melina Charbonneau on July 27, 1957, in South Sioux City. He was employed as a truck driver with Standard Ready Mix and later for Bob Norton Trucking Co., retiring in 1987.

He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Linda Scott of Sioux City; three sons and their wives, Duane and Terry Tripp of Sioux City, Herber "Burt" and Stephanie Tripp of Leavenworth, Kan., and Roger and Jan Tripp of South Sioux City; two sisters, Margie Benson and Ritaann Wynn, both of North Sioux City; a brother, Glen of South Sioux City; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Leona Riibe.

Carlton G. Van Peursem
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Carlton G. Van Peursem, 87, of Orange City died Wednesday at Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Reformed Church in Orange City. Burial will be in Sherman Township Cemetery, near Maurice, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m. and a Masonic service at 8:15 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Francis D. Bertrand
SALIX, Iowa - Francis "Speed" Dooward Bertrand, 63, of Salix died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at his residence.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, with the Rev. Donald Slaven officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Morningside Funeral Home of Sioux City.

Mr. Bertrand was born March 9, 1935, in Salix, the son of Alfred and Bernadette (Dufault) Bertrand. He attended St. Joseph School. He farmed, worked road construction and did carpentry work, most recently for FMC Corp. He retired in June 1998.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include his sons and daughters, William C. of Omaha, Neb., Cynthia and her husband, Gary Flammang, of Smithland, Iowa, Debra S. and her husband, Patrick McCloskey of Elkhorn, Neb., Victoria L. and her husband, Dean Howell, of Elkhorn, Nancy J. and her husband, Daniel Steiner, of Columbus, Neb., Ginger R. Hingst of Wisner, Neb., Clarke A. and his wife, Terri, of Germany, Francis W. of Cornersville, Tenn., and Angela M. Bertrand of Spirit Lake, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; six sisters, Arline Didiuk of Peoria, Ill., Rose Marie Pearson of Bronson, Iowa, Theresa and her husband, Bob Christiansen, of Santa Maria, Calif., Marialayna and her husband, Paul Cuce of Santa Maria, Amelia and her husband, Jim O'Meara, of Lake City, Iowa, and Ruth Mae and her husband, Clarence Larson, of Sioux City; and three brothers, Donald M. and his wife, Marie, Merrill J. and Charles A., all of Sioux City.

He was preceded by his parents; three brothers, Henry, Terrence and Richard; and two sisters, Beverly Knight and Pearle Martinez.
