Ida M. Miller
MACY, Neb. - Ida M. Miller, 66, of Macy died Friday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Alfred Gilpin Building in Macy. Burial will be in the Omaha Indian Cemetery. Visitation will be at Mrs. Miller's home, starting today.
Pearl Hinds
MARTINSBURG, Neb. - Pearl Marie "Nanny" Hinds, 99, of Martinsburg died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield, Neb.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Bressler-Humlicek Funeral Home in Wakefield, with the Rev. Duane Marburger officiating. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery, Allen, Neb.
Mrs. Hinds was born Oct. 19, 1899, in Martinsburg, the daughter of William H. and Elizabeth (Duren) White. She attended rural school.
She married Junious Hinds on March 29, 1937, in Allen, Neb. The couple farmed in the Martinsburg community. He died June 24, 1979. She lived in Martinsburg until entering Matney Manor in South Sioux City in 1987. She entered Wakefield Health Care in 1994.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Allen.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Ardith White of Wakefield and Billie Heggstrom of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Gertie Martin; and four brothers, Ray, George, Warren and Floyd White.
Adrian D. Van Engen
HULL, Iowa - Adrian Dwayne Van Engen, 61, of Hull died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Reformed Church in Hull, with the Rev. Verlyn Boone officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.
Mr. Van Engen was born Oct. 10, 1937, in Sanborn, Iowa, the son of Abraham "Abe" and Dorothy (Vogel) Van Engen. He was raised in Sheldon and served in the Armed Forces during the Vietnam War.
He married Betty Jean Van Otterloo on June 21, 1963, in Hull. The couple made their home in Hull. He was employed at Koyker Manufacturing for many years. He later became a partner in C. & A. Repair, which he now owned and operated.
He was a member of First Reformed Church and American Legion Wegman-Koele Post of Hull. He served as a volunteer fireman in Hull for 30 years and enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Arlan and Vicki of Overland Park, Kan.; a daughter and her husband, Darla and Michael Peterson of Tulsa, Okla.; five grandchildren, Jenna Amundson, Dustin and Hunter Peterson, Jozy and Andra Van Engen; and three brothers, Dale of Sibley, Iowa, and Gerald "Joe" and Leslie, both of Sheldon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Verna Jean Van Der Zwaag.
Bernice L. Pope
EMERSON, Neb. - Bernice L. Pope, 78, of Lincoln, Neb., formerly of Emerson, died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at a hospital in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. to day at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Emerson, with the Rev. Don Wilken officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Emerson. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh Funeral Home in Emerson.
Mrs. Pope was born March 6, 1920, in Emerson, the daughter of Otto and Emily (Stalbaum) Zeisler.
She married W. George Pope on Jan. 17, 1945. They farmed near Emerson until his death in 1981. After his death, she moved into Emerson and in 1998, she moved to Lincoln.
Survivors include a son, Ron and his wife, Helen, of Lincoln; a daughter, Karen and her husband, Marv Flaugh, of Homer, Neb.; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Valerie and Rachel Pope, Lisa Andersen, Lori James, and Lance and Jamie Flaugh; three great-grandchildren; and four brothers and their wives: Darrel and Geraldine Zeisler, Orville and Mildred Zeisler, Arthur and Betty Zeisler and William and MaryAnn Zeisler, all of Emerson.
She was proceeded in death by her parents and two sisters, Elinor Leseberg and Ruby Zeisler.
Debby Hohbach
MATLOCK, Iowa - Debby Hohbach, 16, daughter of David and Gracia Hohbach of Matlock, died Saturday of injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Sheldon, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Reformed Church in Sheldon. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Matlock. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Sheldon Funeral Service of Sheldon.
Linda L. Robinson
LAWTON, Iowa - Linda Lee Robinson, 53, of Lawton died Saturday at Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center in Kingsley, Iowa.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Funeral Home in Moville, Iowa.
Dakota D. Drossel
ANTHON, Iowa - Dakota Darlene Drossel, 78, of Anthon died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at Correctionville (Iowa) Nursing and Rehab Center.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Anthon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kent Kastler officiating. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.
Mrs. Drossel was born July 7, 1920, in Wessington Springs, S.D., the daughter of Sam and Waunita (Sommers) Fry.
She married Lawrence Charrlin on Sept. 14, 1938. The couple lived in Pierre, S.D. until moving to Anthon in 1951. He died in 1954. She married Carey James Drossel in 1955. He died Nov. 28. 1979.
In the 1960s and 1970s, she owned and operated Dakota's Flower Box in Anthon. She also taught art and craft classes.
Survivors include four sons, Larry Charrlin and his wife, Debbie, and David Charrlin, all of Chicago, Ill., Carey Drossel and his wife, Valerie, of Edmonton Alberta, Canada, and Doug Drossel of Anthon; three daughters, Clara Charrlin Lea of Rapid City, S.D., Carolyn Charrlin Cole of Gillette, Wyo., and Jacque Drossel of Anthon; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lloyd Fry of Bellevue, Wash., and Sam Fry of Pleasanton, Calif.; and two sisters, Zelpha Bonta of Los Angeles, Calif., and Beverly Hillmer of Rapids City.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Marvin Fry.
Memorials may be directed to Anthon School District Art Department.
Ernest Van Driessen
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Ernest Van Driessen, 81, of Sioux Center died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at Sioux Center Community Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Lebanon Christian Reformed Church in Lebanon, Iowa, with the Revs. Paul Bakker and James Hoogeveen officiating. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery. Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
Mr. Van Driessen was born June 3, 1917, in Rock Valley, Iowa, the son of Dick and Johanna (Burgers) Van Driessen. He moved with his family to Beaver Creek, Minn., where he attended the area rural school. He later moved with his family to Valley Springs, S.D.
He married Anna Vander Esch on Jan. 29, 1941 in Lebanon. The couple farmed near Ireton, Iowa, for five years and near Hawarden, Iowa for 35 years. They retired and moved to Sioux Center in 1980.
He was a member of Lebanon Christian Reformed Church, where he served as an elder.
Survivors include his wife; five daughters and their husbands, Erlene and Gordon Johnson of Sioux City, Mary Ann and Henry Klarenbeek of Edgerton, Minn., Delores and Garry Zonnefeld of Sioux Center, Lois and the Rev. James Hoogeveen of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Rosa and Gary Schepel of Luverne, Minn.; a son and his wife, Charles and Nola of Hawarden; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Johanna Ackerman of Luverne; and a sister-in-law, Nellie Van Driessen of Volga, S.D.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John; and two sisters, Margaret Top and Jennie Van Roekel.
Pallbearers will be Gregg and Ryan Zonnefeld, Jeff Hoogeveen, Brent Schepel, John Brandt and Ron Van Grootheest.
Ione B. Johnson
PETERSON, Iowa - Ione B. Johnson, 89, of Peterson died Sunday at Buena Vista County Hosptial in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Oakland Cemetery, Peterson. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., at Warner Funeral Home in Peterson.
Melvin Westphal
HARTLEY, Iowa - Melvin Westphal, 85, of Hartley died Friday at Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Hartley. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Jack W. Semsker
Jack W. Semsker, 99, of Sioux City died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Graveside services were held Sunday, Dec. 20, in Mount Sinai Cemetery, with Rabbi Yossi Zylberberg of Congregation Beth Shalom officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Mr. Semsker was born June 6, 1899, in New York City, the son of Samuel and Rebecca (Bernstein) Semsker. He later moved to Washington D.C., where he attended school and graduated from business high school.
He married Bertha Seff, who preceded him in death on Nov. 2, 1995. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1938. He was the owner of Seff Insurance Agency.
He was a member of Iowa Insurance Agents, Sioux City Scottish Rites Bodies, Congregation Beth Shalom and B'nai B'rith. He was a former member of Sioux City Country Club.
Survivors include a sister, Mildred Silverberg of Washington D.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials in his name may be directed to Congregation Beth Shalom or Morningside College Semsker Scholarship Fund.
Pauline S. Pistore
Pauline S. Pistore, 71, of Sioux City died Saturday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Church of Christ in Oto, Iowa. Burial will be in Westfork Township Cemetery, Climbing Hill, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
William W. Broer
William W. "Bill" Broer, 54, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at a Tucson, Ariz. hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday
at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Noel Pet ersen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Siouxland Detachment of the Marine Corps League. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 9 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Broer was born Nov. 11, 1944, in Norfolk, Neb., the son of William H. and Mildred (Tiegen) Broer. He moved with his family to Hinton, Iowa, when he was eight years old. He graduated from Hinton High School in 1963. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1963 to 1966. He served with 155th Division, U.S. Marine Corps Reserves from 1966 to 1969. He then moved to Sioux City and attended Western Iowa Tech Community College. He graduated from Electronics School in May 1971.
He married Linda Archer and later married Janet W. (Wickey) Longwell on July 28, 1985, in Sioux City. He was employed with Electrical Engineering Co. from 1975 to 1985. He owned and operated the Dog House Tavern from 1978 to 1985, when he moved to Phoenix.
He was a member of I.B.E.W. Union Local 231 in Sioux City and Local 640 Electrical Union in Phoenix.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Clinton Broer of Turin, Iowa and Nathan Longwell of Phoenix; three daughters, Teresa and her husband, Lyle Butler, of Onawa, Iowa, Tammy and her husband, Dale Elgert, of Merrill, Iowa, and Bobbie Jo Longwell of Phoenix; three brothers, Allan and his wife, Maria, of Torrance, Calif., Mel of Sioux City and Gene and his wife, Nancy, of Turin; two sisters and their husbands, Gloria and Dennis Julch, of Omaha, Neb., and Donna and Steve Kaiden of Whitehall, Ill.; and six grandchildren, Amanda, Erik, Kristopher, Kiley, Jesse and Lindsey.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers will be Ken and Bob Felix, Kevin Monahan, Steve Lowell, Larry Kunze and Gary Boeshart.
H. Irene Anfinson
H. Irene Anfinson, 92, of Sioux City died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at Casa de Paz following a brief illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dr. John Meyer officia ting. Burial will be in Obert Cemetery, Obert, Neb. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mrs. Anfinson was born April 30, 1906, in Newcastle, Neb., the daughter of Iver and Hannah (Vatting) Birkley. She attended schools in Newcastle and Maskell, Neb. She also attended Wayne State College.
She married Burdette Anfinson on June 10, 1931, in Sioux City. The couple resided in Obert before moving to Yankton, S.D. They moved to Sioux City in 1976. He died April 28, 1978, in Sioux City.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She had previously been a pianist at Zion Lutheran Church in Maskell.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy Beckman of Seattle, Wash., and Norma and her husband, Robert Luse, of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Allen and Bev of Hinton, Iowa, and Don and Gail of Sioux City; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters and a grandson.
Pallbearers will be Steve Luse, Marc, Brad and Marty Anfinson, Scott Raasch and Dwight Birkley.
A memorial fund has been established.
Glen D. Osterholt
Glen D. Osterholt, 53, of Sioux City died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at his sister's residence following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Kevin M. Richter officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 9 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Osterholt was born Jan. 4, 1945, in Sioux City, the son of Ferdinand and Helen C. (Poss) Osterholt. He had attended New Hope Center and W.A.C.O. For the past five years, he has been a resident of Mid-Step Homes.
He attended St. Boniface Catholic Church.
Survivors include four brothers and their wives, Stan and Lorraine, Ed and Connie, Alan and Jackie, all of Sioux City and Howard and Betty of Dakota City; two sisters, Grace and her husband, Art Hawkins and Joyce Nelson, all of Sioux City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Roger; and a sister, Barbara Ricker.
Pallbearers will be Dave Hawkins, Jim, Ronnie, Jerry and Dennis Osterholt, Dale Nelson and Mark Ricker.
Roger D. Kleve
Roger Dean Kleve, 63, of Sioux City died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednes day at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Susan Miller, chaplain of Hospice of Siouxland, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Kleve was born Aug. 22, 1935, in Ashton, Iowa, the son of William A. and Lucille (Eichmann) Kleve.
He married Janene Kay Koopman in January 1955, in Sibley, Iowa. He was employed with the Sibley newspaper and then moved to Onawa, Iowa, where he was employed with the Onawa newspaper. He moved to Sioux City and worked for Gates Rubber Co. for 35 years.
He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed the outdoors and fishing.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, James and Jennifer, Paul and Carrie and Terry and Debbie, all of St. Louis, Mo.; three daughters, Roxanne and her husband, Darwin Kloster, of Mosquette, Texas, Leslie Cotter of St. Louis and Glenda and her husband, Mike Speece, of Sioux City; his mother of Sioux City; four brothers, Larry and his wife, Linda, of Dakota City, Virgil and his wife, Phyllis, of Hubbard, Neb., Doyle and his wife, Peggy, and Ivan, all of Sioux City; four sisters, Mary Ellen Christensen of Kansas City, Kan., Beverly and her husband, Joe Martinez, of Syracuse, N.Y., Joyce Guy and Sheila and her husband, Max Hoffer II, all of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Pallbearer will be Todd, Jeffery, Robert, Nicholas and William Kleve, Travis and Max Hoffer and Davis Christensen.
Merle Chedester
Milo "Merle" Chedester, 70, of Sioux City died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Emory VanGerpen of Westlawn Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Chedester was born April 5, 1928, in Pisgah, Iowa, the son of Milo A. and Malinda (Thies) Chedester. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He married Esther E. Hinkel on Nov. 11, 1953, in Onawa, Iowa. The couple lived in Mapleton, Iowa, before moving to Sioux City in 1957. He began working at Miller-Kidder in 1957 and retired from Knoepfler Chevrolet in 1989, after 32 years.
He played with the Country Candidate Band for about 20 years. He also played with two groups at the Siouxland Senior Center.
He was a member of Sioux City Eagles Club and South Sioux City Legion Club. He enjoyed music, fishing and camping.
Survivors include his wife; two brothers and their wives, Vernon and Catherine and Glen Robert and Julianne, all of Sioux City; four sisters, Izetta Coyle of Pisgah, Ardith Brenner of Sioux City, Lavonne and her husband, Darrell Uhl, of Mapleton and Shirley and her husband, Marlin Gunderson, of Kiron, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Elmer and Levi.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Seeley, Doug Siefker, Randy and Ronne Coyle, Stu Brenner and Pete Siegner.
Emma A. Webb
Emma A. Webb, 91, of Sioux City died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at Harvest Westside Manor.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home, with the Revs. Al Weiss and Jerry Woodwill officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 9 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Miss Webb was born July 22, 1907, in Wakefield, Neb., the daughter of William and Alice (Richards) Webb. She moved to Sioux City in 1928. She was employed as a stenographer at law offices in Sioux City. She also taught school for a few years.
She was a member of First Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Bonnie Bates and Wava F. Farley, both of Sioux City; a brother, Russell Webb of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Woodrow, Marion, Rev. Gerald and Willie Webb.
Kenneth E. Pierson
Kenneth E. Pierson, 50, of Sioux City died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tues day at St. Michael's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Law- rence L. McCarty officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Mr. Pierson was born June 27, 1948, in Sioux City, the son of Kenneth A. and Viola Pierson.
He married Joanne D. Pinney on April 4, 1981, in Elk Point, S.D. He was employed as a truck driver and mechanic. He worked for Fremont Tire Co., Jack Pinney Co. and was co-founder of Joanna Trucking Co. in April 1994.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Kendra at home; a son, Steven at home; a stepson, John Hooks of North Sioux City; two stepdaughters, Dawn Hooks and her fiance, David Hobbs, of Sioux City and Jackie and her husband, Howard Moritz, of Chillicothe, Mo.; his mother of Sioux City; two sisters and their husbands, Jeannie and Dave Sears of Sioux City and Chris and Larry Evans of Gurnee, Ill.; three adopted children and their spouses, Randy and Kadie Pierson of Flint, Mich., Ron and Sue Pierson of Bellevue, Neb., and Jodi and Joe Berthelsen of Olathe, Kan.; his grandchildren; and father and mother-in-law, Jack and Donna Pinney of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Steve.
Pallbearers will be Gary Junge, Larry and Bill Barkley, Frank Froehlich, Dennis Mincer and Dennis Huisman.
Harriett E. Austin
Harriett Elizabeth Austin, 75, of Las Vegas, formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, in Las Vegas.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Graceland Park Cemetery. The body was cremated. There will be no visitation.
Miss Austin was born Jan. 28, 1923, in Summit, N.J., the daughter of Harry Phillips and Pearl (Orcutt) Austin. She was raised in Sioux City.
Survivors include a brother, Walter Phillip Austin of Honolulu, Hawaii; a cousin and his wife, Alton and Lucille Colby of Sioux City, and other cousins.
Almyrta R. Larsen, 82, of Sioux City died Sunday; Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.
