Gladys H. Horner
Gladys Hope Horner of Sioux City died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Countryside Retirement Center in Sioux City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. George Morey officiating. Burial will be in Eden Cemetery, Hudson, S.D. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with a Order of the Eastern Star service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Horner was born in Dakota City, the daughter of William B. and Pansy G. Johnson. She graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1928.
She married Edward E. Horner in September 1938, in Blencoe, Iowa. She was employed as the manager of the millinary department at Bellas Hess for 11 years. The couple managed the Biltmore Motel for several years. He died Dec. 27, 1979, in Texas.
She was a member of Free Methodist Church Leif Erikson Park, a past Matron of Order of the Eastern Star, Eastern Chapter 548, past Queen of Hathor Temple 38, Daughters of the Nile, past president of Shrine Kan-Duettes, past president of Girls of 68', Fortnightly 500 Card Club and Sioux City Womens Club.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law and her husband, Jane and Lawrence Jagodzinski of Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Cain Jagodzinski and Nicole Mordhorst; and a great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a son, Edward Don.
Edward Kratke
Edward Kratke, 92, of South Sioux City died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at Walker Colonial Manor in South Sioux City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Pender, Neb. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.
Mr. Kratke was born Aug. 17, 1906, in rural Pender, the son of Herman and Dora (Stuckenschmidt) Kratke.
He married Alice Barg on May 8, 1943, in Emerson, Neb. The couple farmed near Pender until 1984, when they moved to South Sioux City. She died Feb. 15, 1988.
Survivors include two sons, Randy Kratke of South Sioux City and Chip Schilling and his wife, Susanne, of Bremen, Germany; a sister, Lena Boltz of West Point, Neb.; four grandchildren, Melany Hilton, Jeremy Kratke, Johannes and David Lee Schilling; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty; and a sister, Ellen "Ella" Leimer.
Marie Lorenzen
Marie Lorenzen, 80, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at her residence.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. A.T. Washington officiating. The body was cremated. There will be no visitation.
Mrs. Lorenzen was born Dec. 25, 1917, in Sioux City, the daughter of Alva and Freda (Cassens) Ellsworth. She graduated from East High School in 1936. She was employed as a labor with F.W. Means Laundry.
She married Maurice Lorenzen on Oct. 20, 1938, in Elk Point, S.D.
She was a member of Girls of 68', Siouxland Senior Center and several card clubs.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Judy and Patrick O'Connor and Donette and Marvin Thompson, all of Sioux City; a sister, Joyce Clary of Sergeant Bluff; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Harrison; and three brothers, Harry, Charles and Donald.
Ida L. Farran
Ida L. Farran, 79, of Sioux City died Tuesday at a Sioux City retirement facility.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will be prior to the service in Graceland Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Jerry DeBoer
LE MARS, Iowa - Jerry Wyan DeBoer, 56, of Le Mars died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at his residence.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church E.L.C.A. in Le Mars, with the Revs. Gary Landsness and Timothy Hogan officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mr. DeBoer was born April 29, 1942, in Baraboo, Wis., the son of Bernard and Dorothea (Zenk) DeBoer. He moved with his family to Le Mars, where he graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1960. He served in the U.S. Navy stationed near San Diego, Calif., where he was an instructor for Flight Captain School. Following his discharge, he managed a donkey softball team for two years. He returned to Le Mars and worked in maintenance at Gehlen Catholic High School. He also served in the Iowa National Guard Co. A, 2nd Battalion (Mech) 133.
He married Sally Jo Averman on June 13, 1971, in Pender, Neb. He received his bachelor's degree in industrial arts and history in 1973, from Westmar College. He taught at Woodbury Central High School in Moville, Iowa, for four years. He then did contracting work building grain bins and pouring concrete. In 1987, he began teaching industrial arts at Remsen-St. Mary's School.
He did volunteer computer work for the priest at St. Mary's Catholic Church and enjoyed fishing, softball and glass etching.
Survivors include his wife; his parents of Le Mars; two sisters and their husbands, Bernette and Dennis Clark of Garden City, Kan., and Donna and Steve Jester of Le Mars; a brother and his wife, Jim and Peggy of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother-in-law and his wife, Bill and Ina Averman of Plymouth, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Rev. Arnold and Eliza Zenk.
Fred Spreng
DOW CITY, Iowa - Fred Spreng, 84, of Dow City died Tuesday at Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center, Dunlap, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Dow City. Burial will be in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, Denison, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.
Bertha A. Ritter
DENISON, Iowa - Bertha A. Ritter, 86, of Denison Friday at her residence.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home in Van Dalia, Ill. Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, at Wesleyan Church in Denison. There will be no visitation. Local arrangements are under the direction of Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison.
Lisa A. Stephan
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Lisa Ann Stephan, 32, of Storm Lake died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, with the Rev. Stephen Schulz officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be after noon Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
Mrs. Stephan was born Jan. 29, 1966, in Alta, Iowa, the daughter of Harold H. and Lorraine E. (Otto) Hinkeldey. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Aurelia (Iowa) High School in 1984. She attended Iowa State University and graduated from Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City. She was employed as a secretary with Farm Credit and then Farm Service Agency for nine years.
She married Bryan Stephan on July 25, 1997, in Storm Lake.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Storm Lake Jaycees, Storm Lake Balloon Days Committee and Buena Vista County Hospital Cancer Support Group. She enjoyed biking and the outdoors.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Lexi Moon at home; her parents of Storm Lake; a brother, Jeffrey Hinkeldey of Sac City, Iowa; a sister and her husband, Teresa and Dale Stuhr of Alta; parents-in-law, Roger and Aletha Stephan of Storm Lake; a brother-in-law and his wife, Randy and Rachel Stephan of Storm Lake; three sisters-in-law, Cheri and her husband, Wade Nehring, of Newell, Iowa, Robin and Angie Stephan, both of Storm Lake; six nephews; and four nieces.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Henry and Ella Hinkeldey and Albert and Hazel Otto.
An educational memorial fund for Lexi Moon has been established.
Lyle G. Thomas
DENISON, Iowa - Lyle G. Thomas, 80, of Denison died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Denison, with the Revs. Chrissa and Kenneth H. Ferguson officiating. Burial will be in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 8. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison.
Mr. Thomas was born June 27, 1918, in Spring Valey, Ill., the son of Archibald and Loretta (Goodrick) Thomas. He moved with his family to Boone, Iowa, where he graduated from Boone High School in 1936. He was employed with Boone Nursery. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and U.S. Air Force for 24 years, retiring as a captain in 1964.
He married Jeanne Judge. Following his retirement, the couple moved to Denison, where he was employed as a Boy Scout District executive. She died in 1965. He was then employed with Smith Motor Supply Co. until 1979.
He married Marion (Fink) Vecera on Aug. 19, 1971, in Holly Springs, Miss. The couple made their home in Denison. He entered Eventide Lutheran Home in March 1993.
He was a member of Steamline Royal Rovers International Camping Club, where he served as president and on the board of directors. He was also a member of Rotary Club, Denison Airport Commission, American Legion Post 8, Veterans of Foreign Wars Ninus L. Hunt Post 2504 and First United Methodist Church, where he served as liturgist, greeter and on the ushers committee.
He was active in Scouting for 24 years, serving as assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, assistant District Commissioner, District executive, chairman of the Eagle Scout Board of Review and merit badge counselor. His Scouting awards include Award of Merit, Scouter's Key, Order of the Arrow and lifetime membership.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, James L. and Kathleen of Berlin, Wis.; a daughter and her husband, Virginia and John Hannah of Caldwell, Idaho; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Madeline Kramer of Boone; four stepchildren, John E. Vecera III and his wife, Margaret, of Fremont, Neb., Patty Kingcade of Alexandria, Va., Peggy Cozad of Omaha, Neb., and Cora and her husband, John Letz, of Janesville, Iowa; seven stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Robert Kersbergen
ROCK VALLEY, Iowa - Robert "Bob" Kersbergen, 82, of Rock Valley died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church in Doon, Iowa, with the Rev. Len Garrison officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, with the family present 7 to 9 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m., at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.
Mr. Kersbergen was born Dec. 17, 1915, in Wilmont, Minn., the son of William and Susan (Dreier) Kersbergen. He moved with his family to Doon, where he graduated from Doon High School. He was employed in Doon, until serving in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945.
He married Alice Johnson on April 15, 1942, in Hartington, Neb. The couple farmed near Doon. She died April 27, 1984.
He moved to Rock Valley in late 1984. He married Chrsitina "Chris" Rikkers on May 17, 1986.
He was a member of Doon Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Boys Scouts, Farm Bureau and Sapphire Masonic Lodge 427.
Survivors include his wife; a son, James of Iron Ridge, Wis.; a daughter and her fiancee, Nada Huston and William Boswell of Fairfax, Va.; a stepson, Kenneth Van Dieren of Rochester, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Jeanette Van Grootheest of Rock Valley and Beverly Van Bochove of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three granddaughters; seven stepgrandchildren; and 11 stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and John "Jack".

HULL, Iowa - Della Blankespoor, 87, of Hull died Wednesday at Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hope Christian Reformed Church in Hull. Burial will be prior to the service in Hope Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oolman Funeral Home in Hull. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Doris G. Cameron
ONAWA, Iowa - Doris G. Cameron, 68, of Onawa died Tuesday at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Pearson Funeral Chapel in Onawa. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
James L. Wimer
TEKAMAH, Neb. - James Lowell Wimer, 64, of Tekamah died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair, Neb.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tekamah, with the Rev. Martin P. Conley officiating. Burial will be in Tekamah Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. today at Hamel-Peck-Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
Mr. Wimer was born Aug. 21, 1934, in Lawton, Iowa, the son of Harry and Alice (Wingert) Wimer.
He married Reita Miles on April 19, 1953, in Sioux City. He was employed as a cattle processor.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in West Point, Neb.
Survivors include his wife; four sons and their wives, Bob and Sharon and Russell and Dixie, all of Tekamah, Rodney and Peggy of Mead, Neb., and Rich and Jayne of West Point; two daughters, Regina and her husband, Ed Feiling and Renee Stammer, all of Tekamah; 16 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two sisters, Vera Emerson of Vermillion, S.D., and Vivian Norvell of California; a brother, Wayne of Scribner, Neb.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Harry and Emory in infancy.
Pallbearers will be Jason, Jeremy and Jamie Stammer, Zach, Seth, Sara and Russell Wimer.
Pearl Severson
VERMILLION, S.D. - Pearl Severson, 90, of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Elk Point, S.D. and Vermillion, died Wednesday at Covington Heights Health Care Center in Sioux Falls.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday, with family visitation to follow, at Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls.
Richard F. Beelner
REMSEN, Iowa - Richard F. Beelner, 69, of Remsen died unexpectedly Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Thomas J. Hart and Monsignor Nicholas J. Ruba officiating, assisted by Deacon Allan Weiler. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary at 8 p.m. said by the Catholic Order of Foresters, all at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Mr. Beelner was born Jan. 4, 1929, in rural Remsen, the son of Michael and Dorothy (Greten) Beelner. He was raised in the Remsen area and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School in 1946. He then farmed with his father. He served in the Army National Guard in the late 1940s.
He married Marion Nothem on Jan. 4, 1949, in Remsen. The couple farmed near Remsen until retiring and moving into Remsen in 1982.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters and enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife; six sons, Michael and his wife, Audrey, Richard Jr. and his wife, Deb, and Daniel, all of Remsen, David of Spencer, Iowa, Patrick and his wife, Nora, of Boulder, Colo., and Jeff of Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Ann Beelner of Boulder; 12 grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley Berendes of Remsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Jack Berendes.
Walter Husted
