Roger E. Benson
Roger Eldon Benson, 80, of Sioux City died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, in Sioux City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dickinson Family Funeral Home in La Crosse, Wis., with Elder Jerry Nelson, of Church is Lord Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Mormon-Coulee Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Mr. Benson was born April 26, 1917, in Houston, Minn., the son of Frank and Elsie (Saphner) Benson. He was raised in Houston and moved to La Crosse, where he was employed with Swift and Company. He served in the U.S. Army from July 1942 to Nov. 1945.
He married Sophie Schuirmann on March 24, 1943, in Decorah, Iowa. She died Nov. 14, 1986, in Sioux City. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1966, when he was tranfered with Swift and Company. He retired in 1979.
He was a member of the AFL-CIO in La Crosse and the World War II Veterans Association "Polar Bears."
Survivors include three sons, Gary E. of Sioux City, Roger and his wife Elaine of La Crosse and Wayne and his wife Mona of Esjberg, Denmark; four daughters, Ruby Coady and Linda and her husband Daniel Stremcha, all of La Crosse, Bonnie and her husband Paul Umsted of Harlton, Texas and Sandi and her husband Phil Williams of Sioux City; 24 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mae Schuirmann of Chicago, Ill. and Bertha Wilder of La Crosse; and his special friend, Virginia Lanoie of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Ruth Ann Benson; two brothers; and two sisters.
Pallbearers will be Roger O. and Troy Benson, Adam and Dan Stremcha, Derek Williams and Doug Coady.
Hazel M. Sutton
Hazel Mae Sutton, 84, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, in Sioux City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Sioux City, with Joel Stevenson officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Sutton was born April 17, 1913, in Anthon, Iowa, the daughter of John Earl and Rosa Belle (Blackford) Watkins. She attended Moville, Iowa Public School. She moved to Sioux City in 1930.
She married Merle Sutton in 1932, in Sioux City. He died in 1983, in Sioux City. She was employed with Armour and Company.
She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Survivors include two sisters, Etta Baker of Sioux City and Alta and her husband Jim Gaines of Wheatland, Wyo.; a brother, Verle Watkins of Cape Girardau, Mo.; and a sister-in-law, Stella Sutton of Puyallup, Wash.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Jesse E. Watkins; and a sister, Pearl Watkins.
Lucille E. Rameden
Lucille E. Rameden, 85, of Sioux City died of cancer Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at her residence.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Calvary Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Gerald Kapanka officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Rameden was born Oct. 22, 1912, in St. Helena, Neb., the daughter of William and Edith (Andersen) Schaller. She was raised on a farm in the St. Helena area. She attended schools in St. Helena and Wynot, Neb. She was employed as a nanny in Yankton, S.D. before moving to Sioux City, where she also worked as a nanny.
She married Amen Rameden on Sept. 4, 1940, in Sioux City. He died Nov. 28, 1986, in Sioux City.
She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid and the Bible Study Group. She enjoyed flowers, crossword puzzles and playing Scabble.
Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Nielsen of Spencer, Iowa and Myrna and her husband Jim Jones of Sioux City; a sister, Audrey Georgius of Pateros, Wash.; and three grandchildren, Cindy Alvano, Marcy Schroeder and James Jones Jr.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda; two sisters, Bernice Becker and Irma Bremer; and a brother, Orville Schaller.
Pallbearers will be Jim and James Jones Jr., Tim Alvano, Dr. Joey Schroeder, Dick and Bob Becker.
Rev. Theodore Anderson
Rev. Theodore J. "Ted" Anderson, 77, of Sioux City died Sunday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Julie M. Clemon
Julie Mae Clemon, 26, of Mission Hill, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday of injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Yankton, S.D.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
J.P. Naughton
J.P. "Jim" Naughton, 84, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul-Louis Arts officiating. Cremation will follow the services and a private burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Naughton was born Feb. 20, 1913, in Sioux City, the son of James F. and Mary H. (Oakleaf) Naughton. He graduated from Trinity Prep High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Hazel B. Heglin on Oct. 8, 1959, in Sioux City. He was employed as head of maintenance of the night crew at the County Courthouse for several years and with Younkers until retiring in 1977.
He was a member of Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Polly O'Brien of Westminster, Colo.; a stepson and his wife, Guy and Pat Hempey of Sioux City; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Luella and Ralph Pedersen of Sioux City and Debbie and Dale Hunter of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a brother and his wife, Joseph and Gertrude of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Agatha Kroloff of Sioux City and Inez Fields of South Sioux City; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Frances Hildebrand; and a brother, John.
Darrell M. Baker
Darrell Mae Baker, 81, of Sioux City died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at the Matney Morningside Manor following a lengthy illness.
Private services will be held. Private burial will be in Newcastle City Cemetery at Newcastle, Neb. There will be no visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Baker was born June 10, 1916, in Newcastle, the daughter of Nickolas and Gertrude (Ehle) Schuder. She graduated from Newcastle High School. Following graduation, she moved to Sioux City.
She married Dave Baker on June 20, 1941, in Newcastle. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and fishing.
Survivors include her husband; a brother and his wife, Myrle and Joyce Schuder of Tacoma, Wash.; three sisters, Betty and her husband Donald Parr of Elgin, Ore., Lorraine and her husband Homer Watson of Albany, Ore. and Rita McAnally of Troutdale, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Allen Schuder; and a sister, Rose Bagley.
Minnie M. Gardiner
Minnie M. Gardiner, 97, of Sergeant Bluff died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Ronald T. Allin, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Blair City Cemetery at Blair, Neb. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Gardiner was born April 28, 1900, in Boyd County, Neb., the daughter of Walter and Vida (Melendy) Mixer. She graduated from St. Catherine's Academy in Jackson, Neb. in 1917, and from Fremont College in Fremont, Neb. in 1918. She received her bachlor of arts degree from the Lewis Institute in Chicago, Ill. in 1934.
She married William Gardiner in August 1943, in Chicago. He died in 1978 in Summerfield, Fla. She began teaching in 1917, at country schools in Nebraska and later taught for 25 years in county schools in Illinois. She was a teaching principal. The last nine years of her career, she was superintendent of Pennoyer School, a private school, in Chicago. Following their retirement, the couple moved to Florida, where she resided until 1992. She then moved to Sergeant Bluff to reside with her daughter.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Sioux City and the Eastern Star Chapter 122 in Bellview, Fla.
Survivors include her daughter, Norma Nelson of Sergeant Bluff; a stepson and his wife, William and Mary Gardiner of Naples, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Darryl Nelson, Dianne Dzoba, Ronald, John and Greg Gardiner, Sheldy Harville, Linda Bowman and Myrtle Sparks; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Donald; two brothers, Paul and Seba Mixer; and a sister, Frances Shepherd.
A memorial has been established in her name.
Marcella A. Steeg
Marcella Alice Steeg, 76, of North Sioux City died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Merrill Muller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at Berkemier Funeral Home.
Mrs. Steeg was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Sioux City, the daughter of Alvin and Emma Olmstead. She was raised in Sioux City and attended Sioux City Public Schools.
She married Edward Steeg on May 18, 1943, in Sioux City. The couple made their home in North Sioux City.
She attended Riverside United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Edward Jr. "Butch" and Barbara of Le Mars, Iowa and Gary and Barbara of Elk Point, S.D.; three daughters and their husbands, Valerie and Rick Harshfield of Sioux City, Velta and Robert Hickey of Winner, S.D. and Jackie and Jack Phillips of McCook Lake, S.D.; two brothers, Leonard and Kenneth Olmstead, both of Sioux City; two sisters, Joyce Beardshear and Delores Townsend, both of Sioux City; 22 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Virgil and Richard Olmstead; and three sisters, Thelma Hermann, Marie Sumner and Donabell Henrichsen.
Estella I. Mark
Estella I. Mark, 93, of Escondido, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, in Escondico.
No formal services were held. Telophase Society of Escondido was in charge of the arrangements.
Louisa Chessari, 99, of Sioux City died Monday; Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.
Margaret L. Richardson
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Margaret Laila Richardson, 87, of Storm Lake died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1998, at the Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, Texas following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, with the Rev. Duane Queen, the Rev. Mary Pol and the Rev. Richard Massaro officiating. Burial will be in Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, with the family present from 2:30 to 4 p.m. and from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
Mrs. Richardson was born Nov. 3, 1910, in Malcom, Iowa, the daughter of Hugh and Nola McClure. She attended Malcom schools and Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
She married Clarence C. Richardson on Nov. 20, 1931. She was employed to help him complete theological seminary for the ministry. Since retiring, the couple have wintered in Weslaco.
She was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon, and the P.E.O. Chapter NL.
Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Marvin and Lavon of Storm Lake; a daughter and her husband, Marjorie and Larry Porter of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Tim and Deb Hansen and Kevin and Kimberly Richardson; a stepgrandson, Loren Porter; and four great-grandchildren.
Harlan M. Farb
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Harlan Martin Farb, 74, of Fort Pierce, Fla., formerly of Storm Lake, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Memorial services will be at By-the-Sea United Methodist Church in Vero Beach, Fla. at a later date. Indian River Cremations, Inc. of Vero Beach is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Farb was born Aug. 12, 1923, in Storm Lake. He moved to Fort Pierce in 1984, from Birmingham, Mich. He was a retired sales manager for United Technologies in Detroit, Mich.
He was a member of By-the-Sea United Methodist Church and the Indian River Cremation Society. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Lois (Nelson) Farb; a daughter, Julie Love of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; two sons, Martin of Rye Brook, N.Y. and John of Woodstock, Ga.; a brother, Norman Farb of Villa Park, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Memorials in his name may be directed to By-the-Sea United Methodist Church in Vero Beach.
Eugene Dandy
SCHALLER, Iowa - Eugene Dandy, 67, of Arlington, Texas, formerly of Schaller, Iowa, died Tuesday at Vencor Hospital in Arlington.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller. Burial will be in Schaller Cemetery. There will be a brief visitation prior to the services Thursday at the church. Barker Funeral Home of Holstein, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.
Wallace H. Lutjens
LE MARS, Iowa - Wallace "Wally" H. Lutjens, 83, of Le Mars died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. today at St. John's Lutheran Church E.L.C.A. in Le Mars, with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services today at the church. Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Lutjens was born Oct. 25, 1914, in Hull, Iowa, the son of Louis and Tillie (Roggen) Lutjens. He was raised in Sheldon, Iowa, where he graduated from high school. He was employed with various jobs in retail stores.
He married Marie Rohlfes on Oct. 13, 1937, in Sheldon. He couple moved to Le Mars in 1951, where he opened a furniture store. She died Feb. 7, 1998.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church E.L.C.A.
Survivor include a son and his wife, Kent and Lucy of Berkeley, Ill.; a daughter and her husband, Kathi and Don Skinner of Lake City, Iowa; five granddaughters; and a sister, Betty Jones of Green Valley, Ariz.
Willard Den Hartog
SHELDON, Iowa - Willard Den Hartog, 71, of Sheldon died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Reformed Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. Gary Roozeboom officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.
Mr. Den Hartog was born Dec. 11, 1926, in Sheldon, the son of James and Dena (Geurink) Den Hartog. He was raised on a farm near Sheldon and graduated from Hospers (Iowa) High School. Following graduation, he worked on the farm.
He married Alice Heitmeyer on Feb. 5, 1950, in Sheldon. The couple farmed near Sheldon.
He was a member of First Reformed Church, where he taught Sunday School and catechism, served as a deacon and an elder and was vice president of the consistory. He also participated in the Layman missions and served on the Farmers Co-op Oil, Ritter Farmers Elevator and Sheldon Christian School boards.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Twyla and her husband Marwin Vogel of Sheldon and Denise Den Hartog of Denver, Colo.; a son and his wife, Wayne and Debbie of Sheldon; eight grandchildren, Seth and Sara Vogel, Mark, Jennifer, Amy, Chad, Lacey and Kelsey Den Hartog; three brothers and their wives, Robert and Berdie, Elmer and Joyce and Eugene and Henrietta, all of Sheldon; five sisters, Marian Haack of Primghar, Iowa, Florence and Edna Dykstra, both of Sheldon, Ruth and her husband Charles Ten Clay of Sheldon and Arlene and her husband Jim Ver Mulm of Sanborn, Iowa; and his mother-in-law, Tena Heitmeyer of Sheldon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law; a granddaughter, Rebecca; and three brothers-in-law.
Joseph A. Kemp
LE MARS, Iowa - Joseph "Joe" A. Kemp, 90, of Le Mars died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Jerome Cosgrove officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitiation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m., at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mr. Kemp was born July 22, 1907, in Le Mars, the son of Hubert "Bert" and Margaret (Meis) Kemp. He was raised near Le Mars and attended St. Joseph's Catholic School.
He married Oliva Luken on Jan. 23, 1933, in Le Mars. The couple farmed in the Le Mars-Oyens, Iowa area. They retired in 1972, and moved into Le Mars, where he was employed part-time with Wells Blue Bunny for several years.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society and an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus Trinity Council 1466. He enjoyed woodworking, playing cards and pitching horseshoes.
Survivors include his wife; three sisters, Josephine Holzman and Leona and her husband Ben Ruhland, all of Le Mars and Irene Phillips of Remsen, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Angeline Koopman, Frances Kellen and Celeste Scharrer; and two brothers, Lawrence in infancy and Al Kemp.
Harriet Zorgdrager
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa - Harriet Zorgdrager, 73, of Rock Rapids died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at the Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital in Rock Rapids following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, with the Rev. William DeYoung and the Rev. Dennis Nicholson officiating. Burial will be at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday in Pleasantview Cemetery at Little Rock, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.
Mrs. Zorgdrager was born Nov. 30, 1924, near Newkirk, Iowa, the daughter of Henry P. and Anna Marie (Scholten) Langstraat. She attended Township 3 School and Newkirk Community School, graduating valedictorian in 1942. While in school, she did office work for the superintendent and accompanied the music for the school and church. She received her teaching certificate and taught in Sioux and O'Brien Counties.
She married Elmer Zorgdrager on Feb. 17, 1944, in Carmel, Iowa. The couple lived on a farm in Hospers, Iowa before moving to Lake Wilson, Minn. They also farmed in Heron Lake, Minn. before moving to Little Rock. While in Little Rock, she was employed as a cook in several restaurants and then as a bookkeeper with the Sibley (Iowa) Gazette and Tribune. In 1970, she was employed as a secretary with the Farm Bureau Office in Rock Rapids, until retiring in 1992. They moved to Rock Rapids in 1978. She also gave piano and organ lessons for many years. He died Dec. 28, 1995. She entered the Lyon Manor Care Center in Rock Rapids.
She was a member of First Reformed Church, where she was the organist.
Survivors inlcude a son, Allen of Sibley; two daughters and their husbands, Phyllis and Rod Borer of Little Rock and Loretta and Glenn South of Fort Worth, Texas; a grandson, Mike Gerken; a stepgranddaughter, Heidi Borer; three sisters, Anna Rensink and Johanna Den Hartog, both of Sheldon, Iowa and Nellie Langstraat of Des Moines; a brother, Herman Langstraat of Orange City, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Alice Langstraat of Hospers and Trace Langstraat of Lyndon, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Peter and Lester Langstraat.
Lillian Delutri
MERRILL, Iowa - Lillian Delutri, 101, of Merrill died Sunday at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Home in Le Mars, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Assumption Catholic Church in Merrill. Burial will be in Assumption Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Wednesday, with a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Feuerstein Funeral Home of Le Mars is in charge of the arrangements.
Jule D. Bohlken
HARTINGTON, Neb. - Jule Dean Bohlken, 75, of Hartington died Sunday at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Visitaiton will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with rosaries at 2 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.
Mildred D. Nelson
PRIMGHAR, Iowa - Mildred D. Nelson, 73, of Primghar died Sunday at her residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Primghar. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Primghar.
Minnie Smid
GEORGE, Iowa - Minnie Smid, 87, of George died Monday at the MPC Hospital in Rock Rapids, Iowa.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lyon County First Presbyterian Church in rural George. Burial will be in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Bolin Funeral Home in George.
