Rose B. Ross
Rose Brown Ross, 81, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Traditional wake services began Sunday, Feb. 15, and will run until 2 p.m. today at the Winnebago (Neb.) Tribal Mortuary. Burial will be in Winnebago Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Stanford Whitewater Sr. and family are in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Ross was born April 28, 1916, in Winnebago, the daughter of William Brown and Agnes Marie Johnson. She attended Winnebago Public School.
She married Leonard Whitewater Jr. The couple moved to Cozad, Neb., returning to Winnebago in 1942. They moved to Sioux City in 1943.
She married Joseph J. Ross. He died in August 1978. She was employed with Cudahys, Mook's Cafe and Tri-State Produce in her earlier years. She then was a homemaker.
She was a member of Native American Church, the Wall Street Mission Church of All Nations, the Salvation Army Citadel and the Wall Street Mission American Indian Club, which later became the Sioux City American Indian Center. She served as Home League chaplain for the Citadel Corp. from 1960 to 1980.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Edith and Frank Casaday and Wanda and Marco Enamorado, all of Sioux City; two sons, Antone Ross of Sioux City and Christopher Ross of Florida; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Duncan Rave Jr.; her parents; a sister, Josephine Crow; and two brothers, Herman Brown Sr. and Alton Raisewing.
Zerline Baron
Zerline Lillian Baron, 84, of Sioux City died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Congregation Beth Shalom, with James Sherman, spiritual leader, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Baron was born May 19, 1913, in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of Abraham and Lena (Newman) Somberg. She graduated from Omaha Central High School and received her degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo.
She had been a resident of Sioux City for 53 years.
She married Ephraim William Baron on Jan. 11, 1942, in Omaha. He died Nov. 5, 1964, in Sioux City.
She was employed as an agent for Lincoln National Life Insurance Company for more than 30 years. She received the "Agent of the Year" Award on several occasions. She retired in 1995.
She was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom, formerly Shaare Zion Synagogue. She was a member of the Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Shalom, the Women's League of Shaare Zion and the Hadassah. She was a member and former board member of the American Cancer Society and an active member in the P.T.A.
Survivors include a son, Bernard David of Boston, Mass., and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Frank and Sandi Baron of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by a son, Alan Joseph; two brothers, Harry and Louis Somberg; and two sisters, Sarah Chesen-Sirkin and Ruth Krantz.
Memorials in her name may be directed to either the American Cancer Society or Congregation Beth Shalom.
Margaret DuBois
Margaret (Wood) DuBois, 73, of Sioux City died Sunday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Larkin Northside Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Bernice Thomas-Cliff
Bernice "Bea" Thomas-Cliff, 86, of Sioux City died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harry Walker, of Bethel Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Thomas-Cliff was born Feb. 14, 1912, in Elkton, S.D., the daughter of Charles and Marie (Vick) Lang. She had been a resident of Sioux City since the 1950s.
She married Paul Thomas in the mid 1940s. She had became engaged to Donald Cliff in 1980.
She was employed with Swift Packing Plant, Bud's Lounge, Bea's Lounge in Salix, Iowa, and the Jungle Lounge.
She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the Eagles Club.
Survivors include her care givers, Dorothy (Cearley) and Gus Theros, William Cearly and John Cearley, all of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by numerous brothers and sisters,
Pallbearers will be John Baryo, Jerry Buehler, William Cearley, Farrell Cliff, Dennis Harper and Rick Jones.
AlRoy C. Hawkinson
AlRoy C. Hawkinson, 74, of South Sioux City died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. George Morey, pastor of Leif Erikson Park Free Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery at South Sioux City, with military rites conducted by American Legion Monahan Post 64. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Hawkinson was born July 22, 1923, in Sioux City, the son of Alfred and Emma (Lamb) Hawkinson. He graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1941.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in England and France. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal.
He married Jeanne D. Persinger on Aug. 17, 1946, in South Sioux City. The couple lived in Omaha, Neb., for 20 years before returning to South Sioux City. She died Sept. 17, 1994, in Sioux City.
He was employed with Ideal Concrete Block in Omaha for 16 years. He was an over the road truck driver from 1963 to 1975. He then worked for Rouse Service Company in Dakota City from 1975 until retiring in 1988.
Survivors include two sons, Patrick and his wife, Glenda, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Robert of Omaha; a daughter and her husband, Sandra and Darwin Giffrow of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Linda Hawkinson of Colorado Springs; a brother and his wife, Ralph and Joyce of Lakeland, Fla.; two sisters, Delores Donlin of Escondido, Calif., and Donna and her husband, Les Thurk, of Gully, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Kim, Christine, Claire, Erik, Patrick and Christopher Hawkinson, J.D. Campbell, Tracy Gantner and Jim and Beth Giffrow; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mike; a brother, Richard; and a sister, Harriet.
Pallbearers will be Joe Gantner, Jim Giffrow, J.D. Campbell, Rick Hawkinson, Terry Burgess and Tom Welsh.

SAC CITY, Iowa - Marvin E. Hansen, 80, of Sac City died Friday in Texas.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Sac City. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m., at Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.
Irven T. Lorenzen
ANTHON, Iowa - Irven T. Lorenzen, 85, of Anthon died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, with the Rev. Roger Maize officiating. Private burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Mr. Lorenzen was born June 5, 1912, near Castana, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Caroline (Hass) Lorenzen.
He married Helen Buck on April 12, 1933, in Onawa, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Castana area and later moved to Anthon. He retired in 1978 and moved into Anthon. He entered the Morningside Care Center in October 1996.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Duane and Lucy of Belvedere, Ill.; two daughters and their husbands, Donna and Charles Watt of Ida Grove and Joyce and Tom Oertel of Boydton, Va.; two sisters, Ella McClatchey of Manilla, Iowa, and Elsie Lutes of Marshalltown, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
he was preceded in death by two brothers, Arnold and Otto, and a sister, Anna McClatchey.

Sara G. Peter
ELK POINT, S.D. - Sara "Sally" G. Peter, 93, of Elk Point died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Anderson Funeral Home in Elk Point, with the Rev. N. Richard Wickert officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery at Sioux City. Visitation will begin at noon today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Peter was born March 3, 1904, in Sioux City, the daughter of Frank T. and Kate (Jenkins) Wilson.
She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City, in 1923. She studied music at Kaiser School of Music in Morningside College in Sioux City.
She married Leonard Peter on Dec. 8, 1923, in Sioux City. The couple farmed near Thorton, Iowa, for eight years. They moved to Sioux City, where they owned and operated Peters Grocery Store for four years. They moved to a farm near Jefferson, S.D., before moving to Elk Point in 1949.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elk Point, the P.E.O. Chapter A, the Women's Wednesday Club and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter and her husband, Dorothy and Virgil Barrett of Elk Point; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, James Robert Barrett, a brother and a sister.
Bessie Van Drunen
SIBLEY, Iowa - Bessie Van Drunen, 88, of Sibley died Sunday at Osceola Community Hospital in Sibely.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Sibley. Burial will be in Worthington City Cemetery at Worthington, Minn. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at Andringa Funeral Home in Sibley.
Florence J. Kaeberle
VERMILLION, S.D. - Florence Jean Kaeberle, 90, of Vermillion died Thursday at Dakota Medical Hospital in Vermillion.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bergen Lutheran Church in Meckling, S.D. Burial will be in Meckling City Cemetery. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a Rebekah service, at Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion.
Bertha Westerveld
SHELDON, Iowa - Bertha Westerveld, 95, of Sheldon died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. Randy Bergsma officiating. Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at Sheldon Funeral Service.
Mrs. Westerveld was born Dec. 12, 1902, in Horstermark, Germany, the daughter of Adam and Louisa (During) Kopatz. She was raised in Germany and the Netherlands and attended school in Germany. She came to the United States in March 1928.
She married Theodore Westerveld on March 12, 1928, in Boyden, Iowa. The couple had lived and farmed near Boyden, Orange City and Sheldon, Iowa. In 1978 they moved to Sheldon. She entered the Sheldon Nursing Home in 1982. Mr. Westerveld died Jan. 31, 1995.
She was a member of Immanuel Christian Reformed Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Dena Hibma of Edgerton, Minn., and Arlene Westerveld of Sheldon; two sons and their wives, Willard and Mertie of Edina, Minn., and Gerald and Norma of Peoria, Ill.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Maria Smid of Assen, Netherlands.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers, an infant daughter, three granddaughters, a great-granddaughter and a son-in-law.
Pallbearers will be Dane, Danelle, Daryl and Roger Hibma and Gerald and Willard Westerveld.
Marie C. Kunzie
WALTHILL, Neb. - Marie Collins Kunzie, 87, of Walthill died Sunday at Pender (Neb.) Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Walthill. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Munderloh Funeral Home in Walthill.
John G. Schmidt
HAWARDEN, Iowa - John G. Schmidt, 93, of Hawarden died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Hass Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at American Lutheran Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Timothy Solberg officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Mr. Schmidt was born Feb. 23, 1904, near Akron, Iowa, the son of John F. and Mathilda (Wurl) Schmidt.
He married Hilda Frerichs on June 15, 1927, near Akron. The couple farmed near Craig, Iowa, before retiring and moving to Hawarden in September 1974. She died May 8, 1992.
He was a member of American Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Donald and Marlys of Hawarden; a daughter and her husband, Derith and Calvin Robertson of Akron; a sister, Tillie Erks of Akron; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Elmer; four sisters, Hilda Andresen, Mina Rounds, Ella Frerichs and Emma Molzen; and two half sisters, Hannah Wuebben and Christina Kallsen.
Edna O. Andersen
HARTINGTON, Neb. - Edna Olive Andersen, 92, of Hartington died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at Hartington Nursing Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartington, with the Rev. Paul Reimers officiating. Burial will be in Hartington City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.
Mrs. Andersen was born Feb. 7, 1906, in Lyons, Neb., the daughter of Charles Clarence and Margaret Jane (Powell) Joslin. She moved with her family to the Coleridge, Neb., area in 1908, and near Hartington in 1917.
She married Christian P. Andersen on July 3, 1924, in Vermillion, S.D. The couple farmed near Hartington. She entered Hartington Nursing Center in April 1997.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the WLCA.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Duane and Mary of Vermillion; three daughters, Marguerite Stage of Laurel, Neb., Nancy and her husband, Garrett Van Surksum, of Sioux City and Beverly Andersen of Omaha, Neb.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marie and her husband, Bernard O'Garu, of Omaha and Ruth Puntney of Randolph, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Donald; three sisters; and four brothers.
Pallbearers will be Randy, David and Roger Stage, Chris Andersen, Rod Van Surksum Randy Westoff, Ron Johnson and Justin Brodersen.
Edna M. Smith
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Edna M. Smith, 97, of Ida Grove died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, with the Rev. Andrew Currao and the Rev. John Schauer officiating. Burial will be in Ferguson Cemetery at Lake View, Iowa. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Mrs. Smith was born Dec. 9, 1900, in Hooper, Neb., the daughter of George S. and Jennie (Jones) Horner. She attended school in Hooper and moved to Kilgore, when she was 18.
She married William J. Smith on April 14, 1925, in Valentine, Neb. The couple lived in Kilgore and later moved to Crookston, Neb., and then to Valentine. During World War II, they lived in Hastings, Neb.,and later returned to Valentine. In 1948, they moved to Omaha, where she was employed with the Chamber of Commerce until 1961. They then moved to Lake View in 1967 and to Ida Grove in 1976.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and playing cards.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Ohlmann of Ida Grove and Bonnie and her husband, Ray Bubke, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, William G.; a brother, George B. Horner; four sisters, Ione Horner, Pearl Philamalee, Norma Hart and Floma Shangreaux; a son-in-law, George Ohlmann; and a great-granddaughter.
Robert Walsh
LE MARS, Iowa - Robert Walsh, 72, of Le Mars died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Jerome Cosgrove officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. and a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mr. Walsh was born June 9, 1925, in Santa Barbara, Calif., the son of Cecil and Edna (Raber) Walsh. In 1930, he moved with his family to Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 1943.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1946. His awards and decorations include the Presidential Commendation for the Battle of the Coral Sea. Following his discharge, he attended Western Union College in Le Mars.
He married Mary Rita Sieverding on April 7, 1947, in Le Mars. The couple owned and operated Sieverding-Walsh Hardware Store for many years. He retired in 1986. The couple traveled and spent time at their home in Okoboji. They returned to Le Mars in 1977.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, American Legion Wasmar Post 241, where he was past commander, the Golden Kernels Drum and Bugle Corps, where he was past president, the World War II Last Man's Club and the Elks Club.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Vicky Walsh of Boulder, Colo., Barbara and her husband, Tim Weatherly, of Jacksonville, Ill., and Jo Ann Walsh of Encinitas, Calif.; a son, Mike of Le Mars; seven grandchildren, Sean Walsh Sackett, Heather, Breanne, Crystal and Robbie Walsh and Danika and Tessa Weatherly; a brother and his wife, Charles and Dolores of Escondido, Calif.; five brothers-in-law, Bud Sieverding and his wife, Mary, of Marshalltown, Iowa, Roger Sieverding of International Falls, Minn., Harry Sieverding and his wife, Annette, of Madisonville, La., Earl Sieverding of Ocala, Fla., and Tom Sieverding aboard the "Alyce"; and a sister-in-law, DiAnn Stevens of International Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Carsten Godbersen, 93, of Ida Grove, Iowa died Monday; Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home of Ida Grove.
