Lucile M. Christenson
Lucile M. Christenson, 81, of Sioux City died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Kretzschamar, pastor at Whitfield United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Christenson was born June 28, 1916, in Sioux City, the daughter of Arthur and Lizzie (Burwick) Miller. She graduated from Sergeant Bluff High School. She was employed with Interbake Foods for many years.
She was a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church and the Baker's Union.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Howard and Marty Wilshire of New Hampton, Iowa; a daughter, Jean Dawdy of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Robert E. and Gayle Miller of Katy, Texas; three sisters-in-law, Maxine, Vera and Joyce Miller, all of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur and Merle Miller; and an infant daughter, Doris.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jim, Jeff, Darrin and Tony Dawdy and Brian Wilshire.
Beulah A. Harrison
Beula A. Harrison, 94, of South Sioux City, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at a South Sioux City Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Tomlinson pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Dakota City cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today with the family present after 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Harrison was born Nov. 19, 1903, the daughter of Charles H. and Cora E. (Sargents) Foster in Caney, Kan. She married Elmer B. Harrison on July 19, 1938 in South Sioux City. He died Jan. 16, 1971 in Hathorne, Calif. She lived in California from 1962 until 1972 when she returned to South Sioux City.
She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in South Sioux City.
Survivors include three step-daughters, Donna Lane of Dakota City, Naomi and her husband, Vern Sailor of South Sioux City, and Twila DeLapp of Las Vegas, Nev.; one nephew; five step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; and 17 step-great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Wesley DeLapp and Harold Lane; a sister, Treva Twohig; and three step-grandchildren.

Richard Nurre
Richard Carl Nurre, 75, of Sioux City died Friday at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be at noon Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Eva M. Arnold
Eva M. Arnold, 84, of South Sioux City, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at her home after a brief illness.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul United Methodist Church in South Sioux City with the Rev. Terry Tomlinson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. Monday with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.
Mrs. Arnold was born July 11, 1913, the daughter of John N. and Mabel (Riley) Sterling, in Soldier, Iowa. She married Elwin "Skeet" McKernan May 8, 1932. He died February 10, 1953. She then married Edwin H. Arnold on Dec. 27, 1958, in South Sioux City.
She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and the Naomi Circle, the V.F.W. Auxiliary and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband; five sons and their wives, James and Joann McKernan of Concord, Neb., Richard and Sandy McKernan of Phoenix, Ariz., Robert and Karen McKernan of Marshalltown, Iowa, Dennis and Diane McKernan of Sioux City, and Kevin and Shelly Arnold of Sioux City; four daughters, Ellen and her husband Gerald Perdue of South Sioux City, Elaine Williams of Apache Junction, Ariz., Patricia and her husband Terry Kampfe of South Sioux City, and Veronica Grijalba of Dakota City; 33 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Roy, Harry, Raymond, and Orrie; two sisters, Etta Sterling and Edna Garrett; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Joshua L. Arnold, William H. Grijalba, Terry E. Kampfe, Elwin E. McKernan, Roger W. McKernan, and Russell W. McKernan.
Rev. Arthur Beumler
Rev. Arthur K. Beumler, Jr., 64, of Sioux City, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Morningside Presbytrian Church in Sioux City with the Rev. Roger D. Graf and Rev. Richard P. Massaro officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. Monday with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. at Christy, Smith & Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Rev. Beumler was born April 15, 1933, the son of Dr. Arthur K. and Mildred (Chandler) Beumler, M.D., in Portsmouth, Ohio. He was raised and educated in South Webster, Ohio, graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1954, and from Yale Divinity School in 1957. He married Joyce Anne Mills on Dec. 29, 1956 in Lakewood, Ohio. The couple lived in Livonia, Mich. from 1957 to 1976 where he was the associate pastor of Rosedale Gardens United Presbyterian Church. In 1976 they moved to Sioux City where he served as pastor of Morningside Presbyterian Church until 1995.
He was one of the co-founders of Livonia Citizens for Better Human Relations. He was also one of the co-founders of Interfaith Resources in Sioux City. He was moderator of Presbytery of Prospect Hill, past president of Sioux City Ministerial Association, and a member of the Sioux City Chapter of the American Inter-Professional Institute. He was also active and was honored as a volunteer of KWIT public radio station since its inception.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, Dr. James and Heidi Hudnut-Beumler of Decatur, Ga., Steve and Melissa of Omaha, Neb., and John and Allison of Sioux City; and his mother, Mildred Beumler of South Webster, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his father.

Ervin H. Hinkley
Ervin H. Hinkley, 83, of Sioux City died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Morningside Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Roger D. Graf officiating. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. today with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Christy, Smith & Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Mr. Hinkley was born Dec. 15 1914, the son of Harold and Katherine (Woodrig) Hinkley, in Sioux City. He graduated from East High School in 1934. He married Helen Steen on Feb. 15, 1937 in Los Angeles, Calif. She died May 6, 1991, in Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II from 1942 to 1946. He married Frances Holcomb on Feb. 20, 1993. A lifetime resident of Sioux City, he worked for Western Newspaper Union, and D.W. Verstegan Printing Company. In 1953 he joined Record Printing Company and was employed there until his retirement in 1978.
He was a member of Morningside Presbyterian Church, the American Legion Post, and Dakota Dunes Country Club.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Pam Scofield of Sioux City; a step-son, James Holcomb of Johnston; and a step-daughter, Ginger Soelberg of Johnston; five step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Clifford and Raymond.
Memorials may be directed to Morningside Presbyterian Church.
Mary Toothman
Mary Elda Toothman, 97, of Sioux City, died Thursday in Sioux City.
Burial will be in Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colo.
Mrs. Toothman was born on Dec. 15, 1900, the daughter of William Mustard and Bertha (Berkley) Mustard, in Onawa, Iowa. She married Paul Toothman in Aurora, Colo. He died in September 1975. She lived for many years in California, and moved to Sioux City in 1990. She was a homemaker and member of the American Legion Auxillary of California.
Survivors include two nephews, Don Lawrenson and Wayne Lawrenson; and three nieces, Pat Door of San Bernadino, Calif., Betty Dunham of Onawa, Iowa, and Eileen Flannery of Sioux City and four cousins.
Joseph E. Pleiss
Joseph E. "Joe" Pleiss, 78,of Sioux City died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at his residence following a brief illness.
Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Nativity with Monsignor Michael D. Sernett officiating.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. and the family present from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Meyer Brother Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Pleiss was born Jan. 14, 1920, the son of Philip and Elizabeth (Schinker) Pleiss, in Omaha, Neb. He married Dorothy M. Vilim on June 8, 1940, in Omaha. He lived in Omaha until moving to Sioux City 44 years ago. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 41 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of the Church of the Nativity and the church's Men's Club.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Karen and Robert Keegan of Bronson, Iowa, and Janice and Mike Keegan of Lawton, Iowa; a sister and her husband, Marie and John Halblieb of Omaha; eight grandchildren, Kathy Walker, Carol Schoonover, Rob Keegan, Tom Keegan, Sarah Keegan, Liz Brockhaus, Lynette Pease and Pat Keegan; and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Joe Pleiss, Jr.; six brothers and two sisters.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
Dorothy C. Ryan
Dorothy C. Ryan, 90, of Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at her residence.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Graceland Park Cemetery Chapel with the Rev. Arthur Bell, interim pastor of First Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. There will be no visitation. Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Miss Ryan was born July 19, 1907, the daughter of John and Jessie (Foulk) Ryan, in Sioux City. She graduated from Nebraska State Teachers College. A lifelong Sioux City resident, she was a teacher in the Sioux City School system at Smith School from 1928 to 1964 and at West Junior High School from 1964 until her retirement in 1972.
She was an active member and former president of the Sioux City Retired Educators. She was also a member of Literary Outlook Club and Alpha Delta Kappa Spriety. She was an avid bridge player and was a volunteer at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center for many years.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Sue Tiller of Orange, Calif., Steve Tiller and Larry Tiller, both of Houston, Texas, Tom Tiller of Germantown, Ohio, Denny Tiller of New Orleans, La., Rick Tiller of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Peggy Tiller of Palm Harbor, Fla.; and two cousins.
She was preceded in death by a brother, William; and a sister, Marguerite Tiller.
Paul C. Riedesel
Paul C. Riedesel, 70, of Sioux City died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at his residence following a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Convenant Church with the Rev. Karen Styers officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Riedesel was born March 16, 1927, the son of Benjamin and Muriel (Byerly) Riedesel, in Carroll, Iowa. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Lois R. Patterson on Aug. 15, 1956, in Sioux City. He was a lifelong resident of Sioux City and was owner and manager of Siouxland Lock & Key Company for 51 years.
He was a 13 year volunteer facilitator for Marian Health Center Addiction Unit. He was president of 12th St. group of Alcoholics Anonymous for 10 years. He was treasurer of the Hawkeye Club for two years.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John and his wife Christine of Sioux City and Ron of Sioux City; a brother, Don Riedesel and his wife Eva of Sioux City; a sister, Laura Smith of Sioux City; and seven grandchildren, Christopher, Tony, Jordan, Ann, Michael, Zachary, and Tori.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael; and a grandson, Benjamin.
Pallbearers will be Dean Teska, Jeff Pratt, William Smith, Gary Bracht, Gerald Melham, and Robert Peters.
Pat Cline
Pat Cline, 89, of Sioux City, formerly of Aurelia, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Congregational Church of Christ in Aurelia with lay pastor Bruce Rapp officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Aurelia. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Monday with the family present from 2 to 3 at the Wharton-Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia.
Mr. Cline was born Dec. 3, 1908, the son of James Walter and Lucy (Gann) Cline, near Charity, Mo. He married Marie Streed on May 6, 1933. They farmed near Aurelia for many years. The couple moved into town in 1966. He worked for the Cherokee County Parks Department and the Pleasant Hill Cemetery before retiring. He enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Survivors include two sons, J.P. and his wife, Shirley Cline, of Charleston, S.C., and Jack Cline of Westminster, Colo.; a daughter, Mary Jane and her husband, George Seubert of Bronson, Iowa; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; and two half-brothers, Leslie Dale Cline of Gladstone, Mo., and Larry John Cline of Marshfield, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a grandson; two great-grandsons; and all of his brothers and sisters.
Harold R. Martin
Harold R. Martin, 87, of Sioux City, died Friday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 2 to 6 p.m. with the family present from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.
Margaret L. Huth
Margaret L. Huth, 75, of Sioux City died Wednesday at a Sioux City nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until service time at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Pearl E. McLang
Pearl E. McLang, 91, formerly of Sioux City died died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, in Omaha, Neb. following a brief illness.
Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. McLang was born Feb. 10, 1906, near Smithland, Iowa, the daughter of Geroge and Clarisa May (Gibbs) McNary.
She married Arthur McLang in January 1927, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple operated apartment houses in Sioux City for many years, before moving to Climbing Hill, Iowa. He died in 1953. She returned to Sioux City and was employed with the Sioux City school system until retiring.
Survivors include a son, Edwin of Whiting, Iowa; two granddaughters, Teressa McLang and Debra Copeland; two sisters, Ethel Legg of California and Ida Welch of Texas; a brother, Marvin McNary of Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, three sisters and four brothers.
A.J. Spray
A.J. "Cy" Spray, 74, of Antelope Valley, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, in Palmdale, Calif.
Memorial services will be held in Glendale, Calif., by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Saturday, Feb. 7. Memorial services will be held in Sioux City at a later date.
Mr. Spray was born March 3, 1923, in White Butte, S.D., the son of John William and Rose Spray. He served in the Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the Dec. 7, 1941 attack. He also served on various submarines during World War II.
He returned to Sioux City in 1947, and was employed as a stage manager at the Municipal Auditorium. In 1975, he moved to Glendale, where he was employed with various production companies and TV networks as a stage hand. He retired in 1978, and moved to Antelope Valley.
He was a member and past chaplain of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3552 and the American Legion Post 771. He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and a 17 year AA member.
Survivors include a son, Frank of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Allison Taggart and Mike and A.J. Spray; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Howard of Lake Andes, S.D. and Dave of Springdale, Ark.; and three sisters, Louetta Scott of Rosewell, N.M., Gertrude Barrett and Charlene Gentile, both of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by two wives, Leone "Pat" Spray in 1979 and Janet Spray in 1996; a brother, Leroy "Bud"; and his parents.
Orville S. L. Nagel
WORTHINGTON, Minn. - Orville S. L. Nagel, 59, of Worthington died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Roste Funeral Chapel in Rock Rapids, Iowa. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
Mr. Nagel was born April 15, 1938 in Southgate Calif. He grew up on a farm southwest of Rock Rapids. He attended country school and enjoyed playing piano and accordian, and was in the band. He graduated from Rock Rapids High School in 1956. He was in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960. He married Jacoba Van Holland in 1966 in Rock Valley. He worked on electronic aircraft for Dynalectron Corp. of Fort Worth, Texas from 1960 to 1973, traveling to many states and countries during this time. He moved to Larchwood, Iowa where he drove truck. He moved to Worthington in 1980 and retired in 1985 following a truck accident.
Survivors include a son, Carl of Worthington; his mother, Vernette Nagel of Le Mars, Iowa; two sisters and their husbands, Mary Jane and Leslie Van Berkum of Le Mars, and Janice and John Spyksma of Rock Rapids; nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts.
He was preceded in death by his father, Orville H. Nagel.
A. Darline Richardson
STORM LAKE, Iowa - A. Darline Richarson, 75, of Storm Lake died Saturday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be all day Tuesday with the family present from 2:30 to 4 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
Dena Jacobs
LE MARS, Iowa - Dena Jacobs, 84, of Le Mars died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church, Preston Township, with the Rev. William Kallestad officiating. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mrs. Jacobs was born July 10, 1913, in rural Preston Township, the daughter of Gerhard and Meta (Martfeld) Wilken. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended country school.
She married Gerhard Jacobs on Oct. 9, 1930, in Preston Township. The couple farmed for many years and then moved to Le Mars in 1964. She was employed with Brentwood Good Samaritan Center for 12 years, retiring in 1980.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, St. John Lutheran Circle and sung in the choir. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and playing cards.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Orlan and Karen of Le Mars and Stanley and LeJoyce of Akron; a daughter and her husband, Margaret and Dave Sitzmann of Le Mars; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Freida McAnich of Le Mars.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Kate Siebens, Hannah Grasz, Margaret Wilken, Edna Wilken and Minnie Gabel; and two brothers, John "Jack" and Art Wilken.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Shane, Kelly, Jamie, Scott and Kevin Jacobs and Zachary Sitzmann.
Edmund A. Anderson
HINTON, Iowa - Edmund A. Anderson, 84, of Hinton, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home following a short illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Gerald Kapanka officiating. Military graveside services by American Legion Casper Post #477 of Hinton will be held in Rademacher Cemetery in rural Hinton. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. with Rev. Glen Rachuy officiating, at the Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Anderson was born Dec. 1, 1913, the son of Carl and Lottie (Asplund) Anderson, in rural Plymouth County. He married Erma A. Ludwig on Aug. 16, 1941, in Dakota City, Neb. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a lifelong Plymouth County farmer and resident.
He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church where he served on several church boards. He was a member of American Legion Casper Post #477 of Hinton and the Plymouth County Zoning Board. He also served on Plymouth County ASCS.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Jim and his wife, Lorraine of rural Hinton; two sisters, Ethelyn Cain of Sioux City, and Annabelle Johnson of Carroll, Iowa; six grandchildren, Dawn, Debbie, Russ, Brad, Kurt, and Annette; five great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joann Lampe, a brother, Raymond; and two sisters, Helen Hilton and Ceclia Hoffman.
Pallbearers will be Doyle Struve, Greg Toliver, Russ Anderson, Brad Anderson, Kurt Anderson, and Randy Riley.
Florence Wright
PIERSON, Iowa - Florence Geraldine Wright, 86, of Pierson died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Church of Christ in Correctionville, Iowa with the Rev. Elmer Hodge officiating. Burial will be in Correctionville Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home in Correctionville.
Mrs. Wright was born April 15, 1911, the daughter of Frank and Sadie (Mahin) Keller, in Kingsley, Iowa. She graduated from Hinton High School in Hinton, Iowa and then moved with her family to Correctionville. She married Melvin Wright on Sept. 28, 1931, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple farmed between Cushing and Correctionville until 1955 when they moved to farm south of Pierson. In 1977, the couple moved into Pierson. She was employed at the Locker in Kingsley and later in restaurants there and in Pierson. She enjoyed gardening and raising chickens. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles and reading.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Larry and his wife, Patty, of Sioux City, and Steve and his wife, Oliva of Grinnell; a daughter, Cleone and her husband, Ron Perkins, of Pierson; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Francis Fullerton.
Doris Kraai
HULL, Iowa - Doris Kraai, 79, of Hull, Iowa, died Friday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the American Reformed Church in Hull. Interment will be prior to the service at Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Monday with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.
Lawrence Fletcher
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Lawrence Fletcher, 74, of Ida Grove, died Friday at a Sioux City hospital.
