Scott B. Blades
Scott Bradley Blades, 38, of Ankeny, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines of Lou Gehrig's disease.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery at Sioux City. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Ankeny Funeral Home. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
Mr. Blades was born in Sioux City, the son of Jack and DeLores Blades. He graduated from Washington High School in 1977, and Des Moines Area Community College in 1980. He was employed as a purchasing agent with Capitol Sanitary Supply.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ankeny.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda of Ankeny; three children, Stephanie, Tiffany and Ryan, all at home; his parents of Cherokee; two sisters, Starla Cason of South Sioux City and Sheryl and her husband Tim Wilcox of Sioux City; and his maternal grandmother, Viola Bornholtz of Sioux City.
Memorials may be directed to either the Ankeny Sports Complex or First United Methodist Church.
Magdalene D. Staber
Magdalene "Maggie" D. Staber, 67, of Rancho Viejo, Texas, formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Rancho Viejo.
Services will be at 9 p.m. today at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Rancho Viejo, with the Rev. Tom Pincelli officiating. Burial will be in Mont. Meta Memorial Park. Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home of Harlingen, Texas is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Staber was born Nov. 25, 1930, in Sioux City, the daughter of Paul and Mabel Bitsos. She lived in Sioux City until 1981, when she moved to Rancho Viejo. She enjoyed nature and birds.
Survivors include her husband, Ted Staber of Rancho Viejo; two daughters and their husbands, Kathryn and Ken Trachte of Baton Rouge, La. and Teresa Hamilton and Brian Smelker of Lafayette, La.; a son and his wife, John and Patty of Edwards, Colo.; two sisters, Marie Woods of Donna, Texas and Mary Stevens of Sioux City; a brother, Louie Bitsos of Sacremento, Calif.; five grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jared Staber, Lisa Renfroe, Brian Trachte and Richard Hamilton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Tony Bitsos.
Pallbearers will be Richard Hamilton, Jared Staber, Brian Trachte, Philip Right and Ben Kelb.
Memorials may be directed to the Bird Rescue in care of the funeral home in Harlingen, Texas.
Archie C. Shrader
Archie C. Shrader, 87, of Sioux City died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Ronald T. Allin, interim pastor at First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Monahan Post 64. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 3 to 5 p.m. and a prayer service at 4:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Shrader was born Dec. 24, 1910, in Suprise, Neb., the son of George A. and Carrie (Jennings) Shrader. He graduated from Rising City (Neb.) High School in 1928. He moved to Sioux City in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 in the South Pacific.
He married Mary D. Dierkes on June 1, 1946, in Sioux City. She died July 11, 1983, in Sioux City. He married Mary C. DeJong on Nov. 14, 1984, in Elk Point, S.D. He was employed with Blue Bunny and Fairmont Foods. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 29 years as a clerk.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the American Postal Workers and the Sioux City Eagles Club.
Survivors include his wife; a brother and his wife, Richard "Dick" and Jeny of Rising City, Neb.; two sisters, Bette Shrader and Polly and her husband Gerald Woodruff, all of Bellevue, Neb.; and two stepsons, Richard and Robert DeJong.
He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Pallbearers will be Lloyd and Kenneth DeJong, Don Munro, Roger Anderson, Robert Olsen and Jerry Coyle.
Memorials in his name may be directed to the American Cancer Society in Sioux City.
Belva M. Mickey

Belva M. Mickey, 95, of Sioux City died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Whitfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard E. Kretzschmar officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Wednesday until service time at the church. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Mickey was born April 4, 1902, in Wolbach, Neb., the daughter of Albert and Ada (Davis) Moss. She was a graduate of the Ward Academy of South Dakota. She moved with her family from Hamill, S.D. to Sioux City in 1923.
She married Lyle C. Mickey on Sept. 6, 1924, in Sioux City. He died June 8, 1985, in Sioux City. She retired from J.C. Penney Company after 30 years of employment.
She was a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was a painter and artist.
Survivors include a son and his wife, James "Jack" F. and LeeAnn of Azusa, Calif.; two daughters and their husbands, Joanne and Howard Graves of Sioux City and Betty and Avery Stickels of St. Paul, Minn.; five grandchildren, James and Cameron Mickey, Stacy Courtney, Steven Stickels and Kathryn Rosenthal; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Perry, Albert and James; and two sisters, Irene and Evelyn.
Pallbearers will be Tyson Jeppesen, Steven Stickels, Charles Solomon, Donald Mathews, Joe Moss and Harold Bradford Jr.
Laverne E. Suffield
Laverne E. Suffield, 75, of Sioux City died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at the Countryside Retirement Home following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Bruch officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Berkemier Funeral Home. Visitation will resume at 6 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church.
Mrs. Suffield was born Sept. 5, 1922, in Sioux City, the daughter of Ted and Lucille (Klucking) Colt. She graduated from Central High School in 1940 and attended Nettleton Business College. She was employed as a bookkeeper with Ted's Cafe for several years.
She married William D. Suffield on Oct. 24, 1945, in Long Beach, Calif. The couple made their home in Sioux City. He died May 26, 1993. She then managed Suffield Properties Inc.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Thomas and Lynn of Cedar Park, Texas; three daughters and their husbands, Margaret and Nick Millard of Sioux City, Barbara and Oris Glass of Fremont, Neb. and Melania and Randy Lundgren of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Evelyn Plueger of Sioux City; and 11 grandchildren, Martin, Michelle and Mark Millard, Oliver, Jared and Garrett Glass, Rami, Jill and Wade Suffield, William and Eleanor Lundgren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Mickey Colt.
Pallbearers will be Martin and Mark Millard, Jared, Oliver and Garrett Glass, Wade Suffield and William Lundgren.

Robert B. Carson Jr., 55, of Sioux City died Sunday.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Bernadine C. Conner
ANTHON, Iowa - Bernadine C. Conner, 74, of Anthon died Sunday at her residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury, Iowa. Burial will be in Danbury Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday, with a rosary said by the Rosary Society at 3:30 p.m. and a vigil wake service at 6:30 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa. Visitation will resume after 9 a.m. Thursday until service time at the church.
Blanche E. Johnston
ONAWA, Iowa - Blanche E. Johnston, 94, of Onawa, formerly of Turin, Iowa, died Monday at the Onawa hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Turin. Burial will be in Belvidere Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a Eastern Star service at 7:30 p.m., at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.
Geraldine Hinrichs
LAWTON, Iowa - Geraldine "Jerre" Hinrichs, 78, of Lawton died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at the Valley Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville, Iowa, with the Rev. Michael Kroona officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery at Lawton. Visitation with the family will be from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today at the McCulloch Funeral Home in Moville.
Mrs. Hinrichs was born July 17, 1919, in Woodbury County, Iowa, the daughter of Oliver and Alma Lea (Shipley) Horsley. She graduated from East High School in 1937.
She married Wayne Hinrichs on July 8, 1939, in Dakota City. The couple had resided in the Lawton area since 1939, where she was a homemaker.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Meadows Golf Club. She enjoyed golfing, fishing and crafts.
Survivors include her husband; three daughters and their husbands, Zoralea and Tom Crowl of Wilsall, Mont., Joane and Everett Hinrichs of Manson, Iowa and Sandy and Bob Wang of Omaha, Neb.; a son and his wife, Mike and Sheryl of Chesapeake, Va.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Elsie and Walter Stamper of Queensbury, N.Y.; a brother, Lee Horsley of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers will be John and Jack Crowl, Amy Ward, Wayne and Josh Hinrichs and Justin Wang.
Diane E. Fischer
MERRILL, Iowa - Diane Elizabeth Fischer, 38, of Merrill died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at her residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Le Mars, Iowa, with the Rev. Fred Malone officiating. Burial will be in Stanton Township Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with the prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mrs. Fischer was born March 2, 1959, in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of Dale and Donna (Crow) Holtz. She graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 1977.
She married Keith Fischer on Nov. 22, 1992, in Merrill. She was employed with Dean's, K-Products in Orange City, Iowa, Casey's Store in Merrill and served as secertary for the Presbyterian United Church of Christ for three years.
She was a member of Merrill United Methodist Church, where she served as the Sunday School superintendent and Sunday School teacher. She was a lay speaker in the church and sang in the choir. She headed the youth group and assisted her husband as financial secertary of the church.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Marie and Miranda, both at home; her parents of Merrill; two brothers, Dale of Le Mars and Dustin of Merrill; a sister, Darla Carter of Sioux City; her father-in-law, Marvin Fischer of Le Mars; and 13 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents and a mother-in-law.
Lawrence J. Fletcher
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Lawrence J. "Larry" Fletcher, 74, of Ida Grove died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove, with the Rev. John Schauer officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Fletcher was born May 28, 1923, in Sapulpa, Okla., the son of Heber J. and Rosa (Lawson) Fletcher. He was raised and educated in Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Navy, then worked in the shipyards in Oregon. He lived in Hawaii for two years before returning to Oklahoma, where he was a welder.
He married Mary Lou Hastings on June 23, 1946, in Wichita, Kan. The couple lived in Oklahoma for 15 years before moving to Waterloo, Iowa and then Ida Grove. He was employed as an engineer with Gomaco, retiring in 1988. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Cynthia Lou and Edward Bailey of Kansas City, Mo.; a granddaughter, Amber Jean Bailey; and a sister and her husband, Margie and John Soloc of Durand, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Susan Ruth Fletcher; and a sister, Lorene King.
Anthony E. Pottebaum
ALTON, Iowa - Anthony E. "Tony" Pottebaum, 61, of Alton died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with a rosary at 3 p.m. said by the St. Mary's Rosary Society, a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary at 8 p.m. said by the Catholic Order of Foresters, at the church. Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Pottebaum was born July 7, 1936, in rural Alton, the son of Anton and Anna (Pick) Pottebaum. He was raised in the Alton area and attended St. Mary's Academy in Alton. He was then a farm laborer in the Granville and Alton area. He served in the U.S. Army for four years and was then employed at the Alton Premium Feed. In 1960, he went into farming for himself.
He married Janet Gergen on Aug. 29, 1961, in Granville, Iowa. The couple continued farming near Alton and in 1963, they moved to a farm near Hospers, Iowa. In 1967, they moved to their farm near Alton.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the church choir, the Catholic Order of Foresters, a past commissoner for 12 years and an alternate commissioner for the Sioux County Soil Conservation Board and a past dealer for Cargill Seed for many years.
Survivors include his wife; six daughters, Deb and her husband, Mark Van Roekel of Waterloo, Iowa, Margie and her husband Scott Simonson of Sioux Center, Iowa, Sherry and her husband Tom Powers and Chris Pottebaum, all of Sioux City, Jean and her husband Jeff Shrum of Eagan, Minn. and Carla Pottebaum and her fiance Jay Franzmier of Waverly, Iowa; five sons, Larry and his wife Shelly of Marion, Iowa, Gary and Danny and his wife Renae, all of Alton, Darrell and his wife Susan of Indianola, Iowa and Rick and his wife Bonnie Sue of England; 12 grandchildren; five sisters, Tarsella and her husband Milo Probst and Florence Thole, all of Alton, Berdella and her huband Herb Schueller of Primghar, Iowa, Mary Ann and her husband Art Walker of Clermont, Fla. and Donna Rae and her husband Kenneth Krogman of Ashton, Iowa; six brothers and their wives, Ivan and Clare of Granville, Eugene and Eny of Rock Valley, Iowa, Howard and Doris and Orville and Mary Ann, all of Alton, Arlin and Marlene of Hospers and Ike and Carol of Le Mars; and a brother-in-law, Ambrose Block of Hospers.
He was preceded in death by parents and a sister, Bernice Block.

Patricia Reintsma
SHELDON, Iowa - Patricia Reintsma, 62, of Sheldon died Sunday at the McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church in Sheldon. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery at Sanborn, Iowa. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Sheldon Funeral Service.
Denman F. Dean
SLOAN, Iowa - Denman F. Dean, 85, of Sloan died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at the Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Wood Funeral Home in Sloan, with the Rev. Emery Killian officiating. Burial will be in Hite Cemetery near Whiting, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Dean was born Dec. 26, 1912, in Shelton, Neb., the son of Bert C. and Edna (Laugh) Dean. He graduated from Shelton High School in 1932. He was employed as a gandy with the Union Pacific Railroad for a couple of years, before he moved to Iowa and started farming. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. He returned to farming in the Whiting area.
He married Helen Fitzgerald on Oct. 1, 1945, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple moved to Sloan in November 1958 and continued to farm. He retired in 1990 and moved into Sloan in 1996.
He was a member of Emery-Johnson American Legion Post 481 in Whiting and the Whiting Rifle Club. He enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, James of Whiting, Mike and his wife Chris of Salix, Iowa and Greg and his wife Gwyn of Sloan; three daughters and their husbands, Bev and Ronnie Copple of Salix, Chris and Mike Williams of Runnels, Iowa and Denise and Bob Lestor of Bloomington, Minn.; two sisters, Opal Deen of Onawa and Alta and her husband Wes Kensinger of Grand Island, Neb.; 12 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carol Sue; a sister, Nora Waite; a brother, Ervin; and two infant brothers.
Adwilda I. Blanchard
JEFFERSON, S.D. - Adwilda Irene Blanchard, 97, of Jefferson died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson, with the Rev. Andrew Swietochowski officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Berkemier Funeral Home. Visitation will resume at 3 p.m. Wednesday, with a rosary at 7 p.m. followed by a scriptural wake service, at the church.
Mrs. Blanchard was born Aug. 25, 1900, in Salix, Iowa, the daughter of Vetal and Corrine (Lamoreux) LaCroix. She was raised in Salix and attended St. Joseph School.
She married Victor Blanchard on May 21, 1919, in Salix. The couple made their home in Jefferson, where they farmed for 55 years. They moved into Jefferson when they retired. He died Nov. 2, 1976.
She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
Survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Corrine and Virgil Mollet, Vedeane and Douglas Colt and Danielle and Paul Irwin, all of Jefferson and Sonia and Leighton Chicoine of Le Mars, Iowa; two sons and their wives, Clifford and Betty of Parker, S.D. and Vic and Salli and Milpitas, Calif.; four sisters, Eva LaCroix of Jefferson, Amelia Tone of Sioux City, Jeanette Cook of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Yvonne Sirois of Long Beach, Calif.; four brothers, Peter and Edward of Sioux City, Phillip of Sergeant Bluff and Rene of Issaquah, Wash.; 38 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren; and 36 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Roger; three brothers, Fred, Francis and Ernest; a sister, Marie Trudeau; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; and two great-great-granddaughters.
Esther T. Williams
HOLSTEIN, Iowa - Esther T. Williams, 74, of Holstein died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Center in Holstein.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein, with the Rev. Curtis Benson officiating. Burial will be in Holstein Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Dessel-Schmidt American Legion Post 225. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the fmaily present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Barker Funeral Home in Holstein.
Mrs. Williams was born April 27, 1923, in Rice Lake, Wis., the daughter of Amos Marshall and Lettie Mae (Myers) Taft. She graduated from high school and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
She married Wayne Williams on Nov. 30, 1947, in Holstein. He died in 1985. She was a homemaker and co-owner of the M.E. Craft Boutique. She was also employed with Bye and Bye Printing, Travel Craft and was a bookkeeper for Williams Lumber in Holstein. She was a bus driver for the Galva-Holstein Community School.
She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, the American Legion and Holstein Golf and Country Club. She was an honorary life member of the Band Mothers Organization, now known as the Galva-Holstein Music Parents. She was active in Cub Scouts and served as a den mother.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Richard and Janalee and Roy and Jeannie, all of Holstein; six grandchildren, Wayne Alan, Ronald, Trisha, Jeffrey and Joseph Williams and Tara Heeren; a sister, Helen Lane of Nixa, Mo.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Mary and Ron Stanton of Galva, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Harry, Clarence, Wilbur, Roy and Henry; and a sister, Marion Erickson.
Randall C. "Randy" Nelson, 27, of Merrill, Iowa died Sunday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
