Lester H. Lazere
Lester H. Lazere, 103, of Sioux City, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Westwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Mr. James Sherman, spiritual leader, officiating. Burial will be in Mr. Carmel Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Mr. Lazere was born Aug. 2, 1918, the son of Moris and Sarah (Kaplan) Lazariowich, in Sioux City. A lifelong Sioux City resident, he graduated from Central High School and later from the University of Nebraska with a degree in pharmacy. Together with his brother, he owned and operated Lazere Pharmacy for 17 years. He also worked at other drug stores including Thompson Drug.
He was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom, Landmark Masonic Lodge #103 A.F. & A.M., the Sioux City Consistory and the Municipal Band.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Brenda and Lyman Burgess of West Bloomfield, Mich., and Janet and Bernard Keiser of Highwood, Ill.; his former wife, Leah Lazere of Skokie, Ill.; and four grandchildren, Jamie and Joshua Burgess, and Ian and Ross Keiser.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steven J. Lazere; and a brother, Bernard.
Henry J. Sponder
Henry J. "Pete" Sponder, 71, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 2, 1998 in Harlingen, Texas.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul-Louis Arts officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military graveside services by V.F.W. Sergeant Floyd Post #1973. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. Friday with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Sponder was born April 7, 1926, the son of Joseph and Mary (Laska) Sponder, in Sioux City. He married Wilma A. Beekley on Aug. 21, 1949, in Sioux City. He lived the majority of his life in Sioux City, but resided for five years in Worthington, Minn. He was employed with Armour & Co. for over 30 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
During the 1940s and 1950s, he was an avid softball player, participating on a number of city teams and winning many tournaments including the 1949 and 1952 State Championships. He also played in the National tournament in 1952. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and V.F.W. Shull Post #850. He was a frequent bowler in earlier years and was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Greater Siouxland Golf Association.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry ad his wife, Linda of Le Mars, Iowa; a daughter, Linda and her husband, Jim Lemek of Ft. Madison, Iowa; six grandchildren, Lisa, Jenny and Chris Lemek, and Amy, Lindsey, and Katie Sponder; two brothers and their wives, Leo and Helen and Stanley and Betty, all of Sioux City; two sisters, Josie and her husband, Dean Prather, and Annie Sponder, all of Sioux City; three sisters-in-law, Bernice, Florence and Edna Sponder; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Roman, Steve, John, Chuck and Joe; and a sister, Pauline Ostrihonsky.
Pallbearers will be Frank Ostrihonsky, Ed and Tom Sponder, Johnny Klaschen, Mike Prather, and John Sponder.
Bernice Johnson
Bernice Rector Johnson, 103, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in Sioux City.
There will be no services or visitation. Inurnment will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Mrs. Rector was born on March 3, 1894, the daughter of Frederick and Bertha Rector, in Kalamazoo. She also lived in Rock Island, Ill., and Grand Rapids, Mich., before moving to Sioux City in 1961. She attended Rock Island public schools and a business college in Rock Island. She married Louis Krause in 1915 in Hokie, Ark. He died in 1960 in Grand Rapids, Mich. She married William Johnson in 1962 in Sioux City. He died in 1977 in Sioux City. While living in Kalamazoo, she worked as a furniture upholsterer.
She was a member of Easter Star Signet Chapter 350 of Grand Rapids.
Survivors include a nephew and his wife, Andrew and Ireene Johnson of Merritt Island, Fla.; and two nieces, Marian Dickenson of Las Vegas, Nev., and Marian Pock of Tuscon, Ariz.
Olive M. Sample
Olive M. "Dolly" Sample, 77 of Sioux City died Tuesday, Feb., 3, 1998 at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Riverside Lutheran Church with the Rev. Glenn Schacht officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Berkemier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Miss. Sample was born Feb. 20, 1920, the daughter of Chester and Bertha Petit, in Merrill, Iowa. She was raised in Merrill, graduating from Merrill High School. She moved to Sioux City in 1940. She was employed at Wincharger Corp. for a number of years and was later employed as a cook at the Shuffle Inn for 16 years.
She was a memeber of Riverside Lutheran Church and South Sioux City Senior Citizens.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Russell and Eva of Jefferson, S.D., Ronnie and Robin of Muskogee, Okla, and Steve and Julie of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Ellen and Ron Bridgett of Sioux City; three sisters, Lucille Holmquist of Palisades, Minn., Jean Steinkoenig of Lady of the Lake, Fla., and Iva Amick of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Chester, Ira, and Bob Petit; and two sisters, Violet Bassett and Helen Stoneking.
Seth Hamilton
Seth Hamilton, 74, of Sioux City died Thursday, Feb. 1998 at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Riverside United Methodist Church with the Rev. Merril Muller officiating. Entombment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with flag presentation by Commander Emil Rasmussen, V.F.W. Post 915, Elk Point. Visitation will be 3 to 8:30 p.m. Friday with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Berkemier Funeral Home.
Mr. Hamilton was born Apirl 25, 1923, the son of Charles and Ruby (Doyle) Hamilton, in Hammon, Okla. They moved to Sacramento, Calif. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then returned to California. He married Lorraine Bockelman on March 30, 1946, in Reno, Nev. They made their home in Sacramento until 1948 when they moved to Sioux City. She died on Dec. 4, 1983. He married Betty Shelton on April 24, 1996, in Elk Point, S.D. He was employed at Sioux Tools for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was a metal detector salesman and enthusiast for many years. He had been active in Boy Scouts in Sioux City.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 54, and International Asociation of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Edward and Connie of Sioux City, Steven and Pam of Yankton, S.D.; two brothrs, Lloyd and Richard, both of California; two grandchildren, Heather Hamilton and Alicia Anderson; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Frank.
Winfield G. Shea
Winfield G. "Jimmy" Shea, 95, of Sioux City died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at a Sioux City retirement home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Presbyterian Church with Rev. Roger Graf officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. Friday with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. and a Masonic service by Landmark Lodge #103 A.F. & A.M. at 7:30 p.m. at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.
Mr. Shea was born June 11, 1902, the son of James and Philomena (Maurer) Shea, in Sioux City. He was a hardware salesman with Sioux City Iron Company for 47 years, retiring in 1970. He married Alice Fear in Sioux City. The couple were Girl Scout volunteers. She died Aug. 2, 1996, in Sioux City.
He was a member of Morningside Presbyterian Church. He was also a member and past master of Landmark Lodge #103 A.F. & A.M., Sioux City York Rite Bodies, and Abu Bekr Shrine Temple. He was active in the Scottish Rite Bodies where he was a 33rd degree Mason. He was a past patron of Rose Croix Chapter #40 O.E.S., was a De Molay Dad of the Jamison Chapter, and was a member and past president of the Engineers Club.
Survivors include a son, Gene and his wife, Karen of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a daughter Eilene and her husband, Robert Head, of New Brighton, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert and a sister, Phyllis Blackburn.
Matthew F. Girard
Matthew F. Girard, 28, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert J. Schimmer officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Girard was born March 14, 1969, in Sioux City, the son of Maynard M. and Dona M. (Wood) Girard. He graduated from West High School. He was studying to be an appraiser. He was serving his apprenticeship at Davenport Realty.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a volunteer with the Knights of Columbus, working toward his membership. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter.
Survivors include his mother of Sioux City; a daughter, Tanisha Marie Girard of Sioux City; three brothers, Mark, Martin and Maris Girard, all of Sioux City; and his paternal grandparents, Harvey and Odella Girard of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his father and maternal grandparents.
Pallbearers will include Martin Girard, Mark Girard, Maris Girard, Harvey Girard, Joel Foix, Chris Petersen, and Alex Bender.
Virginia Gallagher, 82, of Sioux City died Thursday; Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Orville E. Brickson
ALTA, Iowa Orville E. Brickson, 88, of Alta died Wednesday at Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home in Alta. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Michael J. Donahue
LE MARS, Iowa - Michael James Donahue, 59, of Le Mars died Wednesday Feb. 4, 1998, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. Burial will be in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be at 8 a.m. today with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Donahue was born Sept. 16, 1938, the son of Vincent and Lucretia (Taft) Donahue, in Sioux Falls. He attended Emerson Elementary School in Sioux Falls. He graduated from high school in Viborg, S.D. in 1956. He then attended the University of South Dakota, receiving his bachelor's degree in human physiology and psychology in 1960. In 1961 he received his teaching certificate and in 1962, his master of science in guidance counseling and psychology. He worked as a lobbyist for the handicapped during the Kennedy Administration.
He married Georgiana Puthoff in August of 1963, in Sioux Falls. The couple moved to Spencer, Iowa where he taught in the school district. He was the director of special education for Area AEA #6 in Marshalltown, Iowa until 1973. He then was the state superintendent for Redfield State Hospital, Redfield, S.D. He later taught early childhood education at the college level in Framingham, Mass.
He married Reba Carlon on Dec. 31, 1982, in Marshalltown. The moved to Sioux Falls where, beginning in 1984, he served as the director of special education at Worthington Public School District #518. The couple had recently moved to Le Mars.
He was a pioneer in work with handicapped children, having developed many innovative programs. He was an avid gardner, master furniture builder and wood carver.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael J. II and his wife, Doretta, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two daughters, Maria and her husband, Aaron, Arp, of Seattle, Wash.; and Lisa Donahue of Ames, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Angela and her husband, Dan Barnes of Marshalltown, Iowa; a stepson, Shawn Carlon of Waterloo, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Lou Bethke of Sioux Falls.
Virgil M. Sitzmann
KINGLSEY, Iowa - Virgil M. Sitzman, 79, of Kingsley, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Kingsley with the Rev. James Fangman officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Friday with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7 p.m. at the church. The Earnest-Michaelson Funeral Home of Kingsley is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Sitzmann was born Aug. 5, 1918, the son of Frank and Kristine (Ruhland) Sitzmann, in Lincoln Township, rural Kingsley. He grew up in the Kingsley area. He married Rosemary Rolfes on Nov. 29, 1944, in Merrill, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Kingsley area until he retired in 1984.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Dennis and Dorothy, and Darrell and Vicki, all of Kingsley; three daughters, Kay Brust of Aurora, Colo., Rose Ann and her husband, Dennis Pine, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Pam and her husband, Dallas Zellmer of Moville, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph and Emmett both of Kingsley; and five sisters, Erma Dressler of Dubuque, Iowa, Madonna and her husband, Victor Albino, of Eugene, Ore., Fern and her husband, Don Beaver of Dubuque, Iowa, Edna Krogman of Le Mars, and Elta Marie and her husband, Merle Baxter, of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Vincent, Roman, and Cecil, and a sister, Florence Kemp.
Erwin E. Jenness
KINGSLEY, Iowa - Erwin E. Jenness, 79, of Kingsley died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998 at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehabilitaion Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kingsley United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Crosswhite officiating. Burial will be in Cherokee Memory Gardens in Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Friday with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Earnest and Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley.
Mr. Jenness was born Oct. 4, 1918, the son of F. Roy and Verna (Mc Corkel) Jenness, near Quimby, Iowa. He lived in Quimby and Archer, Iowa before moving to Washta, Iowa where he graduated from Washta High School. He worked for area farmers in O'Brien County for a number of years. He married Armeda Hudson on Oct. 4, 1948, in Strasburg, Ill. They lived in Pierson where he worked for 30 years for the Pierson Co-op Elevator. After retirement, the couple moved to Kingsley. He has been a resident of the Correctionville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the last year and a half.
He was a member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, David and Melinda of Des Moines, Iowa, Roy and Eugenia of Chula Vista, Calif., and Lloyd and Tami of Moville, Iowa; three daughters, Nancy and her husband, Doug Baker, of Colby, Kan., Verna Smith of Clarinda, Iowa, and Lisa and her husband, Scott Elgert, of Sioux City; a mother-in-law Berte and her husband, Louis Hudson, of Shelbyville, Ill.; three sisters, Geraldine Roby of Cherokee, Ruby and her husband, Lester Webb of Cherokee, and Lois Pflugrad of Port Angeles, Wash.; four brothers and their wives, Virgil and Evangeline of Sanborn, Iowa, Merritt and Velma of Marcus, Iowa; Howard and Berna of Cherokee, and Marlin and Carla of Le Mars, Iowa; and 16 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Reta Fuhrman; a brother, Oliver; and a brother-in-law, Paul Roby.
Eric Crumbaugh
AURELIA, Iowa - Eric Crumbaugh, 12-year-old son of William Crumbaugh of Aurelia and Holly Jeppesen of Sandy, Utah, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, from injuries sustained in a traffic accident near Aurelia.
Services will be a 2 p.m. Sunday at the Aurelia High School gymnasium with lay pastor, Bruce Rapp officiating. Burial will be Tuesday in Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Wharton-Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia.
Eric Crumbaugh was born Aug. 6, 1985, the son of William Roy and Holly (Nelson) Crumbaugh, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a seventh grader in the Aurelia Community School. He enjoyed flying with his father, fishing, and wrestling. He also was an avid Utah Jazz fan.
Survivors include his father; his mother; his step-father, Jeff Jeppesen of Sandy; a sister, Crystal Lynn Crumbaugh of Sandy; a brother, William Cody Crumbaugh of Aurelia; a maternal grandmother, Marian Nelson of Salt Lake City; a maternal grandfather, Blaine and his wife, Jane Nelson, of Las Vegas, Nev.; two aunts; an uncle; and many cousins.
Raymond L. Smith
NIOBRARA, Neb. - Raymond L. Smith, 70, of Niobrara, formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the W.F.L.A. Community Hall in Niobrara with Rev. Shawn Gothard, Loy Wright, and Larry Dean officiating. Burial will be in Ponca Tribal Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday. Brockhaus Funeral Home of Verdigree, Neb. is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Smith was born Oct. 4, 1927, the son of Raymond and Mae Smith, Sr., in Sioux City. He married Esther Anne Hills on May 18, 1956, in Sioux City. He lived in Niobrara until 1939 and then lived in California, Washington, and Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Navy for seven years and was later self-employed as an auto dealer.
He was active in the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska.
Survivors include six sons, David of Minnesota, Jeffrey of Washington, Les of Oregon, and Gary, Tim and Troy of Iowa; four daughters, Brenda Koenig of Minnesota, Lynn Kriska of Missouri, Debbie Teten, and Joni Smith of Nebraska; and a brother Bill Smith of Pendleton, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a son Jim; a granddaughter, April; and two sisters, Mary Lou Sowell and Dorla Jean Schultz.
Henry Harmelink
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Henry Harmelink, 90, of Orange City died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Steven Vander Molen officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Mr. Harmelink was born June 27, 1907, the son of Gerrit and Jennie (Wagenaar) Harmelink, in Hospers, Iowa. He was raised in the Newkirk area. He married Etta De Vries on Feb. 13, 1935, in Orange City. The couple lived four years in Newkirk and four years in Orange City, as well as farming in Hospers, prior to retiring in 1978. She died Oct. 21, 1992, in Sioux City. On Sept. 19, 1996 he became a resident of the Heritage House.
He was a member of First Reformed Church. During retirement he enjoyed gardening and selling produce at the Farmers Market in Orange City. He was also a regular visitor at the Senior Citizens Center in Orange City.
Survivors include seven children, Jennie and her husband, Jim Smit, of Sheldon, Iowa; Gary and his wife, Norma, of Oakdale, Calif., Gloria and her husband, Randy Patterson, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Rosetta and her husband, Gary Lauterbach, of Humboldt, Iowa, Helen and her husband Dave Huitink, of Orange City, Barbara Van Veldhuizen of Las Vegas, Nev., and Karen and her husband, Kevin Vanden Brink, of Orange City; 19 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter Lois Postma; a son-in-law, Jerold Postma; a great-grandson; four brothers, Charlie, Joe, Simon, and Cornie; and four sisters, Gertrude Post, Susan Van Tubergen, Dorthea Harmelink, and Minnie Wiechers.
Vera J. Elsen
LE MARS, Iowa - Vera J. Elsen, 85, of Le Mars died Wednesday at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Le Mars. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Hazel E. Olson
VERMILLION, S.D - Hazel E. Olson, 76, of Vermillion died Wednesday at her home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery in rural Vermillion. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion.

SPENCER, Iowa - Ingreete Mulder, 84, of Spencer died Thursday at Longhouse Residence in Spencer.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Warner Chapel in Spencer. There will be no visitation.
