Lester H. Lazere
Lester H. Lazere, 79, of Sioux City, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Westwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Services were Friday.
Mr. Lazere was born Aug. 2, 1918, the son of Moris and Sarah (Kaplan) Lazariowich, in Sioux City. A lifelong Sioux City resident, he graduated from Central High School and later from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Pharmacy. Together with his brother, he owned and operated Lazere Pharmacy for 17 years. He also worked at other drug stores including Thompson Drug.
He was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom, Landmark Masonic Lodge #103 A.F. & A.M., the Sioux City Consistory and the Municipal Band.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Brenda and Lyman Burgess of West Bloomfield, Mich., and Janet and Bernard Keiser of Highwood, Ill.; his former wife, Leah Lazere of Skokie, Ill.; and four grandchildren, Jamie and Joshua Burgess, and Ian and Ross Keiser.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steven J. Lazere; and a brother, Bernard.
Henry J. Sponder
Henry J. "Pete" Sponder, 71, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 2, 1998 in Harlingen, Texas.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Francis Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul-Louis Arts officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military graveside services by V.F.W. Sergeant Floyd Post #1973. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Sponder was born April 7, 1926, the son of Joseph and Mary (Laska) Sponder, in Sioux City. He married Wilma A. Beekley on Aug. 21, 1949, in Sioux City. He lived the majority of his life in Sioux City, but resided for five years in Worthington, Minn. He was employed with Armour & Co. for over 30 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
During the 1940s and 1950s, he was an avid softball player, participating on a number of city teams and winning many tournaments including the 1949 and 1952 State Championships. He also played in the National tournament in 1952. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and V.F.W. Shull Post #850. He was a frequent bowler in earlier years and was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Greater Siouxland Golf Association.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry ad his wife, Kathy of Le Mars, Iowa; a daughter, Linda and her husband, Jim Lemek of Ft. Madison, Iowa; six grandchildren, Lisa, Jenny and Chris Lemek, and Amy, Lindsey, and Katie Sponder; two brothers and their wives, Leo and Helen and Stanley and Betty, all of Sioux City; two sisters, Josie and her husband, Dean Prather, and Annie Sponder, all of Sioux City; three sisters-in-law, Bernice, Florence and Edna Sponder; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Roman, Steve, John, Chuck and Joe; and a sister, Pauline Ostrihonsky.
Pallbearers will be Frank Ostrihonsky, Ed and Tom Sponder, Johnny Klaschen, Mike Prather, and John Sponder.
Virginia E. Gallagher
Virginia E. Gallagher, 82, of Sioux City died Thursday at a Sioux City care center following a brief illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Augustana Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Joe Devine, 81, of Sioux City, died Friday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Edward R. Wagner, 89, of Blue Springs, Mo., formerly of Sioux City, died Friday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Erwin E. Jenness
KINGSLEY, Iowa - Erwin E. Jenness, 79, of Kingsley died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998 at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehabilitaion Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Kingsley United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Crosswhite officiating. Burial will be in Cherokee Memory Gardens in Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation was Friday.
Mr. Jenness was born Oct. 4, 1918, the son of F. Roy and Verna (Mc Corkel) Jenness, near Quimby, Iowa. He lived in Quimby and Archer, Iowa before moving to Washta, Iowa where he graduated from Washta High School. He worked for area farmers in O'Brien County for a number of years. He married Armeda Hudson on Oct. 4, 1948, in Strasburg, Ill. They lived in Pierson where he worked for 30 years for the Pierson Co-op Elevator. After retirement, the couple moved to Kingsley. He has been a resident of the Correctionville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the last year and a half.
He was a member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, David and Melinda of Des Moines, Iowa, Roy and Eugenia of Chula Vista, Calif., and Lloyd and Tami of Moville, Iowa; three daughters, Nancy and her husband, Doug Baker, of Colby, Kan., Verna Smith of Clarinda, Iowa, and Lisa and her husband, Scott Elgert, of Sioux City; a mother-in-law, Berte Hudson, of Shelbyville, Ill.; three sisters, Geraldine Roby of Cherokee, Ruby and her husband, Lester Webb of Cherokee, and Lois Pflugrad of Port Angeles, Wash.; four brothers and their wives, Virgil and Evangeline of Sanborn, Iowa, Merritt and Velma of Marcus, Iowa; Howard and Berna of Cherokee, and Marlin and Carla of Le Mars, Iowa; and 16 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Reta Fuhrman; a brother, Oliver; and a brother-in-law, Paul Roby.
J.R. Cody
GAYVILLE, S.D. - J.R. "Jack" Cody, 80, of Gayville died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, in Lahaina Maui, Hawaii.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church in Yankton, S.D. with the Rev. James Bream officiating.
Mr. Cody was born Aug. 15, 1917, the son of Thomas Joseph and Emily (Kuhl) Cody, in Sioux City. He attended Blessed Sacrament School and Trinity High School in Sioux City, where he earned All City Honors in football.
He married Harriet Alden in 1939. He worked for International Harvester Co. for 34 years. He moved to Yankton in 1957.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic parish and a lifetime member of Duck's Unlimited.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Jim and his wife, Judy, of Vermillion, S.D., Dr. Thomas and his wife, Stella of San Antonio, Texas, Michael and his wife, Mary Dell, Patrick and his wife, Denise, and Nickolas, all of Yankton; two daughters, Rita and her husband, John Marshal, of Reno, Nev., and Julie and her husband, Jerry Wenner, of Park City, Utah; a brother, Thomas of Tomahawk, Wis.; three sisters, Mary Jane of Le Mars, Iowa, Kathleen of Remsen, Iowa, and Jean Anne of Oconomowoc, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William.

ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Jack Ver Steeg, 90, of Orange City died Friday at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Don Den Hartog officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Michael Anderson
AKRON, Iowa - Michael Eric Anderson, 41, of Boise, Idaho, formerly of Akron, died unexpectedly Wednesday, in rural Elmore County, Idaho.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron. Burial will be held at a later date. Visitation will be at 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

HARTINGTON, Neb. - George Roumpf, 89, of Hartington died Thursday at Hartington Nursing Center in Hartington.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hartington. Burial will be in Hartington City Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.
Dora McDermott
ANTHON, Iowa - Dora McDermott, 81, of Anthon died Thursday at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church of Anthon with the Rev. Kent Kastler officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.
Nellie Richter
PAULLINA, Iowa - Nellie Emma Richter, 93, of Paullina, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina with the Rev. Steven Hayden officiating. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Paullina.
Mrs. Richter was born May 15, 1904, the daughter of Asmus and Emma (Riechers) Jurgensen, near Calumet, Iowa. She was baptized on July 17, 1904, and confirmed on June 12, 1920, at Zion Calumet. She attended rural school. She married Walter Richter on Oct. 8, 1924, in Calumet. They farmed in the Paullina area.
She was a longtime member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Paullina. She enjoyed farm work, outside activities, plants, bowling, and participating in Senior Citizen activities.
Survivors include a daughter, Alice Mae and her husband, Donald Carnahan, of Worthington, Minn.; two sons, Les and his wife, Deanie, of Granville, Iowa, and Bob and his wife, Rita, of Paullina; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Viola Davis of Spirit Lake, Iowa; and several other relatives.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Harvey; five sisters, Katie Wiese, Hilda Rehder, Clara, Martha Langholz Graesing, and Myrtle Carlson.

CASTANA, Iowa - Elaine Helen Amunson, 74, of Castana, formerly of Soldier, Iowa, died Thursday at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier with Rev. Paul E. Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church. Pearson Funeral Home in Soldier is in charge of the arrangements.
Earl Buse
ARCHER, Iowa - Earl Buse, 84, of rural Archer died Thursday at the Baum-Harmon Hospital in Primghar.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Primghar.
Charles Stanek
LYONS, Neb. - Charles Richard Stanek, 84, of Lyons died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at his home in Lyons.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lyons with Rev. David LaPlante and Rev. Joe Dorcey officiating. Burial will be in Lyons Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Piper Funeral Home in Lyons and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a parish rosary at 7 p.m. at the church with Rev. James Kramper, pastor of St. John's Catholic Church of Pender, Neb. officiating. Visitation will also be after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church.
Mr. Stanek was born Nov. 21, 1913, the son of Jerome and Veronica (Hudec) Stanek, near Walthill, Neb. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Walthill and graduated from Walthill High School in 1931. He became chief clerk at the Soil Conservation Service in Walthill in 1936, continuing in that job until 1944. He married Rosellen Dorcey on Dec. 30, 1936, at St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Homer, Neb. In 1944, the couple moved to Lyons where they farmed for many years. The couple became members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lyons.
He had many interests including farming, and mechanical tasks. He enjoyed polka music and played the clarinet and accordion.
Survivors include his wife; their children, Rita Stanek of West Palm Beach, Fla., Charlene and her husband, Bud Kinning, of Pender, Neb., William and his wife, Julie, of Omaha, Neb., Rosemary and her husband, Jerry Jaspersen, of Oakland, Neb., Margaret McKenzie of Lyons, Daniel and his wife, Debbie, of Ohiowa, Neb., and Michael of Des Moines, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Easton of Alexandria, Va., Della Fritts of Lyons, and Mildred and her husband, Dr. Boyd Merrick, of Carroll, Iowa; a brother, Millard of Grant, Neb.; a sister-in-law, Alice Stanek of Kirksville, Mo.; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Jerome; and two sisters, Agnes Stanek and May Stewart.
Mabel C. Hilker
BATTLE CREEK, Iowa - Mabel C. Hilker, 95, of Battle Creek, formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday at the Willowdale Care Center in Battle Creek.
There will be no services or visitation; the body was donated to the University of Iowa Medical School. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Miss Hilker was born Dec. 28, 1902, the daughter of William and Caroline (Koening) Hilker, in Ida County, Iowa. She was raised in Ida Grove and graduated from Ida Grove High School after which she taught in the Ida County rural schools for five years.
She graduated from the former Methodist School on Nursing and then from Morningside College with a Bachelors Degree in Science. She later attended the University of Iowa and the University of Minnesota Public Health School. She served as a visiting nurse in public health in Sioux City for eight years and was a school nurse for the Sioux City Community School District for 25 years, retiring in 1968.
She was a member of First Christian Church where she had been a Sunday school teacher, was active in the Women's Fellowship, and served on the church board of directors. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, St. Luke's Alumni Association, Morningside College Alumni Association, Ida Grove Rebekah Lodge for nearly 60 years, and the Retired Teachers Association. She was also a life member of the Iowa Education Association. While employed, she was an active member of the American Nurses Association and the National School Health Association.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Virgil Wilcox
ALLEN, Neb. - Virgil Wilcox, 84, of Allen died Thursday at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield.
Services will be at 7 p.m. today at Bressler-Humlicek Funeral Home in Wakefield. Burial will be in Arlington, Wash. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
