William V. Striegel
William V. Striegel, 68, of Minneapolis, Minn., formerly of Sioux City died Friday in Minneapolis following a stroke.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Minneapolis. Further services are pending.
Rose A. Davis
Rose A. Davis, 99, of Fresno, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday in Fresno following a long illness.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church in Sioux City, following a private burial in Pierson, Iowa. There will be no visitation. The Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is handling arrangements.
Clem W. Plummer
Clem W. Plummer, 72, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday.
Services are being handled by the Blount, Curry & Roel Funeral Home in Tampa, Fla.
Gladys B. Ericson
Gladys B. Ericson, 92, of Lakewood, Colo., died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1997, at Julia Temple Center in Englewood, Colo.
No services were held. The body was cremated.
Mrs. Ericson was born March 25, 1905, in Oakland, Neb. She graduated high school in Wakefield, Neb., and worked as an elementary school teacher in Lusk, Wyo., for several years.
She married Harlow H. Graham on Oct. 9, 1925. The couple resided in Allen and Cedar Bluffs, Neb., and Sioux City. He died Aug. 12, 1977.
She married G. Homer Ericson on May 9, 1981. The couple resided in Sioux City for several years before moving to Lakewood.
Survivors include her husband; a son, James H. Graham of Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Jean E. Jensen of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Florence McCray of Martin, S.D.; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to the Julia Temple Center, 3401 S. Lafayette St., Englewood, Colo., 80110, or to a charity of choice.
Vickie L. White, 46, of Sioux City died Friday; Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
James R. Buel
ELK POINT, S.D. - James R. Buel, 54, of rural Elk Point died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at his residence following a sudden illness.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at the Evangelical Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Clyde O. Pritchett officiating. Private burial services will be at McCook Cememtery. The body has been cremated, there will be no visitation. The Berkemier Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Mr. Buel was born March 17, 1943, in McIntosh, S.D., the son of Carlisle and Evelyn (Snodgrass) Buel. He was raised in McIntosh and graduated from McIntosh High School. He attended trade school in Fargo, N.D.
He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Following military service he return to McIntosh.
He married Marlene (Linda) Picotte on Jan. 21, 1966, in Yankton, S.D. The couple made their home in McIntosh until 1977, when they moved to Whitwood, S.D. In 1979, they moved to Sturgis, S.D., and to rural Elk Point in 1987.
He was employed by Bellerud Transport Co.
He attended Evangelical Church.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Barbara and her husband, William Geyer of Beresford, S.D., and Kerensa Buel at home; two sons, Robert Buel of Waterloo, Iowa, and David Buel at home; two sisters, Virginia Wilcox of Dickinson, N.D., and Carolyn Olson of Fergus Falls, Minn.; his mother, Evelyn Buel of McIntosh; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Larry and John Buel.
Anna M. Skow
HORNICK, Iowa - Anna M. Skow, 96, of Hornick died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1997, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa, with the Rev. Shirley Textor and the Rev. Louis Aitken officiating. Burial will be in Grant Township Cemetery in rural Rodney, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Skow was born Jan. 9, 1901, in Hjorring, Denmark, the daughter of Nels Peter and Ansine (Madsen) Jensen. In August of 1920, she came to the United States. She worked on area farms in the Whiting, Iowa area learning about American lifestyle and cooking.
She married Elmer Skow on Feb. 28, 1921, in Onawa. The couple lived in Homer, Neb. for their first year of marriage. The next 76 years they lived in Hornick. He died Nov. 2, 1967.
She was proud of her Danish heritage and made several trips to her homeland. She had two sisters and three brothers that also immigrated to the U.S.
Survivors include a daughter, Carrie Johnston of Smithland, Iowa; two sons, Glen and his wife, Dorothy of Hornick and John, who lived with his mother in Hornick; a sister, Inger Johannsen of Denmark; a sister-in-law, Hilda Hansen of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Margaret Ann Maynard, Melvin Johnston, Earl Johnston, Dawn Claus, Carol Luber, Joe Skow, and Marilyn Longlee; 18 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Lorraine Mae Schumann
LAWTON, Iowa - Lorraine Mae Schumann, 74, of Lawton died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at her sister's home in Odebolt, Iowa, of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.
Joint funeral services will be held
for Mrs. Schumann and Harold and Frances Weifenbach at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt, with the Rev. Albert Buelow officiating. The body of Mrs. Schumann will be cremated and burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery in Lawton at a later date. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Odebolt. A memorial service for Mrs. Schumann will be at 5 p.m. Monday, with the family present after 4:30 p.m., at Bethel Lutheran Church in Lawton, with the Rev. Bruce Jackson officiating.
Mrs. Schumann was born Dec. 28, 1923, in Battle Creek, Iowa, the daughter of Otto and Lina (Hobert) Schumann, Jr. She received her education in Battle Creek, and later earned her GED. She made her home in Ventura, Calif., for several years where she was employed as a custodian for the Government Center. She returned to Iowa where she lived five years in Sioux City and then moved to Lawton.
She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Lawton. She was also a member of the Garden Club, Senior Citizens, Great Grannies Band in Lawton, and the Legion Auxiliary in Odebolt. She served as a volunteer at St. Lukes Hospital in Sioux City.
Survivors include two daughters, Lonna and her husband, John Miller of Lawton, and Davett Benson of Lawton and her special friend, Richard Riemenschneider of Pierson, Iowa; two sons, Terry Albers and his wife, Kay of Kuna, Idaho, and Rick Albers of San Luis Obispo, Calif.;nine grandchildren, Tracy Kunkel, Tiffany Miller, Shane Miller, Ryan Albers, Rebecca Albers, Joshua Albers, Nicole Benson, Denett Ruring and Kim Terry; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Roberta Hall of Farnhamville, Iowa, and Alice Meyer of Schleswig, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Leonard Schumann.
Frances Weifenbach
ODEBOLT, Iowa - Frances Roberta Carolina (Schumann) Weifenbach, 81, of Odebolt died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at her residence of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.
Joint funeral services will be held for Mrs. Weifenbach, her husband, Harold, and her sister, Lorraine Schumann, at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt, with the Rev. Albert Buelow officiating. Burial will be in Odebolt Cemetery. Visitation, with the casket closed, will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Mrs. Weifenbach was born Oct. 21, 1916, in Ida County, Iowa, the daughter of Otto and Lina (Hobert) Schumann, Jr. She was baptized and confirmed a Lutheran.
She married Harold Weifenbach on March 10, 1936, in Battle Creek, Iowa.
She was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt, where she taught Sunday School for many years, and was a member of Ladies Aid.
She enjoyed embroidering, flowers, pinochle, writing letters, and quilting for the church.
Survivors include a daughter, Colleen Nuetzman of Wall Lake, Iowa; three sons and their wives, Kenneth and Sandy of Bella Vista, Ark., Keith and Pam of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Kevin and Chris of Newell, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alice Meyer of Schleswig, and Roberta Hall of Farnhamville, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Leonard Schumann.
Harold Weifenbach
ODEBOLT, Iowa - Harold Wilhelm Weifenbach, 83, of Odebolt died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at his residence of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.
Joint funeral services for Mr. Weifenbach, his wife, Frances, and his sister-in-law, Lorraine Schumann, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt, with the Rev. Mr. Weifenbach was born Oct. 16, 1914, in Ida County, Iowa, the son of Henry and Margaret (Young) Weifenbach. He was baptized and confirmed Lutheran.
He married Frances R. Schumann on March 10, 1936, in Battle Creek, Iowa.
He farmed until 1973, then worked for Noble Popcorn Farms in Sac City. He was a groundskeeper at Sac County Country Club, then at Spring Lake Country Club at Odebolt until his retirement.
He was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt, where over the years he held several offices and served on the church council.
He enjoyed playing pinochle, gardening, and watching sporting events.
Survivors include a daughter, Colleen Nuetzman of Wall Lake, Iowa; three sons and their wives, Kenneth and Sandy of Bella Vista, Ark., Keith and Pam of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Kevin and Chris of Newell, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Louise Larsen of Sweet Home, Ore.; and a brother and his wife, Lester and Betty of Schleswig.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Edwin.
Ronald W. Jones
CARROLL, Iowa - Ronald W. Jones, 53, a resident of New Hope Village in Carroll died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Carroll Manor Nursing Home in Carroll.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of Christ in Carroll, with the Rev. Scott Weber officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll.
Mr. Jones was born Oct. 10, 1944, in Evansville, Ind., the son of Robert F. and Garnet P. (Hilbert) Jones. He spent most of his lifetime in Sioux City, and became a resident of New Hope Village in 1980.
He was a member of the Church of Christ of Carroll.
Survivors include a brother and his wife, Robert A. and Phyllis Jones of LaVernia, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers will be Kim Tiefenthaler, Duane Wright, Louis Ferguson, Frank O'Tool, Phil Roos and Mike Toma.
Frank G. Novak
PENDER, Neb. - Frank G. Novak, 96, longtime Pender resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Dayton's Bluff Community Care Center in St. Paul, Minn., where he had been a resident for three weeks.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Cornerstone Assembly of God Church in Pender, where he was last of the charter members. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. The Munderloh Funeral Home of Pender is handling arrangements.
Mr. Novak was born Aug. 7, 1910, on a farm west of West Point, Neb., the son of Ferdinand and Jennie (Reeson) Novak, Sr. At age seven he moved with his family to a farm southeast of Pender where he lived and farmed until 1963, when he moved to Pender.
He married Verla M. Hastie on Aug. 11, 1932, at Perry, Iowa. She died Dec. 28, 1978.
He left the Pender area in 1990, and since 1992, had made his home with his daughter and her family in St. Paul, Minn.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Gene and Ruth of Columbus, Neb., Ken and Cheryl of Scappoose, Ore., and Don and Sharon of Lubbock, Texas; three daughters and their husbands, Delores and Gene Wandersee of St. Paul, Minn., Ruth and Herman Meyer of Socorro, N.M., and Bette and Leonard Kivett of Olathe, Kan.; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Johanna Muhs of Stanton, Neb.
Wilbur "Bill" Winans
HARTLEY, Iowa - Wilbur "Bill" Winans, 93, of Hartley died Friday at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Sanborn Funeral Home in Sanborn, Iowa. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery in Sanborn. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Fern Rice
CONCORD, Neb. - Fern Rice, 82, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of the Concord area, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Evangelical Free Church in Concord, with the Rev. Robert Brenner officiating. Private burial will be in Concord Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Schumacher Funeral Home in Wayne, Neb.
Mrs. Rice was born Jan. 1, 1916, on a farm in Dakota County, Neb., the daughter of Herman and Eva (Bigelow) Hurley. She attended rural school east of Carroll, Neb.
She married Ray Rice on April 24, 1936. The couple moved to South Sioux City in 1976 until 1991, when she moved to Colorado. In 1994, she moved to Harrisonville, Mo.
Survivors include two sons, Clyde and his wife, Joyce of Freeman, Mo., and Dale Rice of Arvada, Colo.; a brother, James Hurley of Sioux City; and three sisters, Bonnie Fuoss of Wayne, Neb., and Eva Kennedy and Jane Myers of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother; three sisters; and a great-grandchild.
Bob Dickinson
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa - Bob Dickinson, 89, of Spirit Lake died Thursday at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Spirit Lake.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Burial will be in St. Margaret's Catholic Cemetery in Spirit Lake. Visitation will be after 2:30 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Donald "Don" Spotts
BATTLE CREEK, Iowa - Don Spotts, 69, of Battle Creek died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Private family memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove, Iowa. There will be no visitation.
Survivors include his wife, Norma; two sons and their wives, Randy and Grace of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Barry and Alicia of Westby, Wis.; nine grandchildren; and three sisters, Inez Maxwell of Medford, Ore., Rachel and her husband, Edwin Hammer, and Beverlyn and her husband, James Schumacher, all of Ida Grove.
