Robert E. Knowles
Robert E. Knowles, 65, of Sioux City died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday at Christy, Smith & Hockenberry Funeral Chapel, with Elder James Mosley and Deacon George Naylor, both of the Tabernacle C.O.G.I.C., officiating. There was no visitation.
Mr. Knowles was born July 30, 1932, in Sioux City the son of John and Agnes (Carlberg) Knowles. He attended Leeds High School.
He married Betty Harding on Sept. 15, 1951, in Sioux City.
He was employed at Wilson Trailer for over 25 years and then at Gordon Recovery Center until his health began to fail.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Billie Jo Knowles, Robin and her husband, Doug Buryanek, all of Sioux City, and Roxanne and her husband, Patrick Pearson of Dakota City; three sons, Joe and his wife, Mary of Dayton, Nev., John and his wife, Rochelle, and Scott, all of Sioux City; 12 grandchildren, Chantalle Galbraith, Mande, Trevor, Christie, Jennifer, Tracy, Chandra, Collin John, Aliesha, Anthony and Austin Knowles and Richard Theeler; two great-grandchildren; and a brother and his wife, John and Jean Knowles of Littleton, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Claudio Perez
Claudio Perez, 53, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 8, 1988, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with Elder Jose Loza, of Jehovah's Witnesses - West Congregation, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Perez was born Jan. 14, 1944, in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Refugio H. and Maria L. (Longoria) Perez.
He married Graciela Valdez on April 27, 1969, in Loredo, Texas. The couple moved to Sioux City in November 1988. He was an auto machanic by trade and currently employed with Meyer Pallets, Inc. in South Sioux City.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jose M. and Jesus H., both of Sioux City; three daughters, Maria and her husband Jose Ramirez, Claudia Perez and Graciela and her husband Victor Rivas, all of Sioux City; six grandchildren; seven brothers, Jose, Jose L. and Roberto Perez, all of Laredo, Refugio H. Jr., Javier, Luis E. and Juan D.D., all of Houston, Texas; and three sisters, Maria L. Garcia, Maria D.S.J. Garza and Maria C. Perez, all of Laredo.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Judge Rodney R. Smith
Judge Rodney R. Smith (Ret.), 73, of Homer, Neb., formerly of South Sioux City, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Dale Jirousek, pastor of First Lutheran Church, and the Rev. Robert W. Battey, his brother-in-law, officiating. Private graveside services will be in Omaha Valley Cemetery at Homer. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.
Judge Smith was born April 22, 1924, in Homer, the son of Malcom R. and Olive (Leamer) Smith. He attended the University of Nebraska from 1942 to 1943, Doane College from 1943 to 1944 and University of Notre Dame, for naval officier training. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy stationed in the South Pacific during World War II, where he commanded a landing craft. He graduated third in his class from the University of South Dakota Law School in 1950.
He married Beverly Battey on June 24, 1948, in Lincoln, Neb. He began practicing law in South Sioux City in 1950. He was later joined by his father, Malcom, and Wayne E. Boyd. For a brief period his son, Bruce, joined the Smith and Boyd Law Firm. He was appointed to the Nebraska Constitutional Revision Committee of the Nebraska Supreme Court in 1970. In 1988, he left Smith and Boyd Law Firm following his appointment by then Nebraska Governor Orr to the 8th Judical Bar County Judgeship. He lived in South Sioux City for almost 51 years, before retiring in May 1995, and re turning to Homer.
He was a member of the American Legion Buckland Post 97 of Homer, the Disabled American Veteran, the Masonic Temple Omadi Lodge 5, the Abu Bekr Shrine, the Scottish Rite, the Phi Delta Theta (social fraternity) and the Phi Delta Phi (legal fratnerity). He was also a member of the Nebraska Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He was a past member of the Sahibs and Flying Fez of the Abu Bekr Shrine.
He was the South Sioux City School Board attorney for many years. He received the Aksarben Good Neighbor Award in 1963. He was one of the founders and directors of the Dakota County Bank, the South Sioux City Development Corporation and the Atokad Racing Association. He was a County Commissioner for Dakota County and a co-chairman of the building committee for First Lutheran Church. He was a past president of the South Sioux City Kiwanis and the South Sioux City Chamber of Commerce. He was a private pilot for 30 years and enjoyed football and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Bruce and his wife Joni of Sioux City, Steve and his wife Becky of Iowa City, Iowa and Lee of Venice, Calif.; a brother and his wife, Larry and Jacqui of Roscoe, Ill.; a sister, Shirley Smith of South Sioux City; six grandsons, Greg, Eric, Alex, Neil, Mac and Bennett Smith; and a step-granddaughter, Malorie Mercural.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be directed to the Abu Bekr Transportation Fund.
Loren L. Spates
Loren Leroy Spates, 71, of Sergeant Bluff died Sunday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Community United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with Masonic service at 7 p.m. at Christy, Smith & Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Bernard Berens
DUNLAP, Iowa - Bernard Berens, 79, of Dunlap died Sunday at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Dunlap. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. today at Fouts Funeral Home in Dunlap.
Kandace J. Burnight
JEFFERSON, S.D. - Kandace Jane Burnight, 44, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Jefferson, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998.
Services were held Monday at Larkin's Funeral Home in Omaha. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Ms. Burnight was born Sept. 3, 1953, in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Elsie (Johnson) Burnight. She was raised in Jefferson, S.D. She attended St. Peter's Grade School and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1971.
She married Bob Croft in Omaha. The couple later divorced. She made her home in Omaha, where she was employed with Professional Research Consultants.
She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson. She enjoyed the outdoors and traveling.
Survivors include her mother of Jefferson; four sisters, Pat Pomerico of Huron, S.D., Judy Streeter of McCook Lake, Debby McKay of North Sioux City and Roben Jefferson of Eugene, Ore.; a brother, Sam Burnight of Smithland, Iowa; her ex-husband of Omaha; three children, Brian Croft of Harlan, Iowa, Mandy Croft of York, Neb. and Seth Croft of Lincoln, Neb.; her mate, Bob McGarry of Omaha; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and a granddaughter.

Gertrude De Jager
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Gertrude De Jager, 86, of Sioux Center died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at the Sioux Center Community Health Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Carmel Reformed Church in Carmel, Iowa, with the Rev. Brad Langstraat officiating. Burial will be in Carmel Cemetery. Visitation will be after 8 a.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
Mrs. De Jager was born March 14, 1911, in Carmel, the daughter of Albert and Agnes (Kuyper) Moss. She attended rural school.
She married Martin De Jager on Aug. 12, 1933. The couple lived in Sioux City, Ireton, Belflower, Calif., Middleburg, Iowa and near Carmel. He died in 1967. She entered the Sioux Center Community Health Center in 1995.
She was a member of Carmel Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday School and Catechism and held offices in the ladies aid circles and guild. She served on the board of the World Home Bible League. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and flower arranging.
Survivors include a son, Marvin of Rock Rapids, Iowa and spouse Jennie of Alvord, Iowa; five daughters, Lavonne and her husband Bill Riphagen of Sioux Center, Darlene and her husband John Van Holland of Rock Valley, Iowa, Elaine and her husband Harvey Kragt of Colfax, Wash., Dianne Winters of Sheldon, Iowa and Gloria and her husband Jay Jackson of Zion, Ill.; a sister, Tracy DeJong of Sioux Center; 30 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel; four brothers, Neal, Marvin, John and Edward; a granddaughter, Carol Van Holland; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jim Riphagen, Doug Van Holland, Steve Winters, Greg De Jager, Jason Jackson and Dave Van Holland.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Helen Eckerman, 85, of Cedar Rapids died Sunday at the Cedar Manor in Cedar Rapids.

ALTA, Iowa - Justus Gustafson, 99, of Alta died Monday at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City, Iowa.

MAY CITY, Iowa - Harold Harms, 79, of May City died Sunday at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, Iowa.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in May City. Burial will be in Harrison Township Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Arthur W. Kirchoff Post 288 of Hartley. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Warner-Baumgarten Funeral Home in Hartley.

PENDER, Neb. - Dean Hastings, 71, of Yutan, Neb., formerly of Pender died Monday at a Lincoln, Neb. hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church in Pender. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Pender. Visitation will resume with a spiritual wake service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Reuben E. Hunter
SLOAN, Iowa - Reuben Eugene Hunter, 73, formerly of Sloan died Dec. 30, 1997, in Baldwin Park, Calif.
Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Covina, Calif., on Jan. 6, 1998.
Mr. Hunter was born June 22, 1924, in Albaton, Iowa, the son of Reuben and Edith (Gerking) Hunter. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a gunner's mate on Merchant Marine ships in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters.
He married Virginia Louise Camp on June 21, 1957, in Las Vegas, Nev. He was employed with Mack Trucks for 30 years, retiring in 1986.
Survivors include his wife; a stepdaughter, Shirley Watt of Michigan; a son, Darrell of Baldwin Park; six brothers, Donald, Kendall and George of Sloan, Roger of Sioux City, David of Stanton, Calif. and Lowell of Falls Church, Va.; and a sister, Virginia Hackett of Bartlesville, Okla.
Pallbearers were his brothers.
Edward J. Kading
IRETON, Iowa - Edward John Kading, 92, of Ireton died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital in Orange City, Iowa.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Ireton, with the Rev. Loren Vogler officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Dean Shelly of Ireton United Methodist Church officiating, at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Ireton.
Mr. Kading was born April 20, 1905, in Casey, Iowa, the son of Edward and Albertina (Storck) Kading. He moved with his family to Ireton in 1914, where he attended rural school.
He married Erlene Parrott on Aug. 28, 1939, in Sioux City. He farmed and feed livestock in the Ireton area until retiring in 1979.
He was active in church and community affairs.
Survivors include his wife, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Margurete Heidbrink and Edna Vander Hamm; and two brothers, Martin and Paul Kading.

ARNOLDS PARK, Iowa - Glen Dale Knight, 77, of Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of Arnolds Park, died Monday at the Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Nolan Funeral Home in Colorado Springs. Burial will be private.

UTE, Iowa - Erwin "Dick" Knutzen, 91, of Ute died Monday at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa.

PRIMGHAR, Iowa - Raymond H. Kruse, 82, of Primghar died Sunday at his home.

REMSEN, Iowa - Vernon Schiltz, 82, of Remsen died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Timothy Johnson of Remsen and the Rev. Terry Roder of Carroll, Iowa officiating. Burial will be in Grant Township Cemetery at Rodney, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary at 8 p.m. said by the Catholic Order of Foresters, at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen,
Mr. Schiltz was born April 19, 1915, in rural Remsen, the son of John and Susan (Treinen) Schiltz. He was raised and educated in the Remsen area, then engaged in farming with his parents.
He married Darlene Marsh on June 10, 1958, in Sioux City. The couple made their home on the family farm near Remsen. She died July 18, 1983.
He was a member of St, Mary's Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Luxemburger Brotherhood. He was an avid card player.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn of Remsen and her fiance Merlyn Tucker of Boone, Iowa; a grandson, Robert; three sisters, Rose Mary Forkenbrock of Junction City, Kan., Armella and her husband Larry Kurth of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Kathleen Pick of Remsen; a brother and his wife, Cletus and Marjorie of Remsen; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Norman and Betty Treinen of Remsen and Clyde and Hazel Means of Marcus, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Callista Konz, Mathilda Treinen, Clarinda Holt, Loretta George and Norma Means.
Pallbearers will be Bill Forkenbrock, Jim Holt, Gaylen Marsh, Todd Pick, Jeff Schiltz and Alan Weinbrandt.
Betty Snyder
GRANVILLE, Iowa - Betty Snyder, 73, of Granville died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital in Orange City, Iowa.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown, Iowa, with the Rev. Steven J. Hayden officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen, Iowa. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. Thursday until service time at the church.
Mrs. Snyder was born April 30, 1924, in Homer, Neb., the daughter of William and Mathilda (Larsen) O'Dell. She was raised in Homer and graduated from Homer High School in 1942. She served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in San Diego, Calif. and Pearl Harbor, from 1944 to 1946.
She married Eugene J. Pelchat Sr. on April 8, 1946, in Amherst, Mass. The couple lived in Amherst and Sioux City. She married Rodney Snyder on Nov. 6, 1971, in Sioux City. They made their home in Alton, Iowa and in 1972, moved to Granville. She entered the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City in July 1996.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary of Granville.
Survivors include her husband; three sons and their wives, Eugene "Joe" and Dianna Pelchat Jr. of Sergeant Bluff, William and Jeannie Pelchat of Sioux City and Tim and Phyllis Snyder of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Robert Hudelson of South Sioux City and Debra and Dennis Vortherms of Granville; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother in infancy, Donald O'Dell; and three sisters, Doris Morgan, Darlene Shreve and Dorothy Winters.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy and Robert Hudelson Jr., Troy and William Pelchat Jr., Chad and James Vortherms.
Jean Tangney
SPENCER, Iowa - Jean (Maurer) Tangney, 96, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, formerly of Spencer, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at the Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spirit Lake, with the Rev. Albert O. Grendler officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Spencer. Turner Funeral Home of Spirit Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Tangney was born Feb. 22, 1901, in Spencer, the daughter of Joseph and Alice (Rote) Maurer. She graduated from Spencer High School in 1919.
She married Earl Joseph Tangney on June 14, 1934, in Clinton, Iowa. The couple owned and operated the Tangney Hotel in Spencer for many years. She also operated the Jean Maurer Gift Shop, located at the Tangney Hotel and The Inn in Okoboji, Iowa for over 27 years. She moved to her cottage on Dixon Beach, in Okoboji, in 1961. He died in 1961.
Survivors include a son, Michael of Okoboji; a daughter, Mary Margaret Lainson of Iowa City, Iowa; three grandchildren, David, Michael and Beth Lainson; and two great-grandchildren.
Leona M. Ullrich
SALIX, Iowa - Leona M. Ullrich, 82, of Salix died Monday at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be at Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., with Scripture service at 7 p.m., at the church. Wood Funeral Home of Sloan is in charge of arrangements.

DENISON, Iowa - Henry Willer, 88, of Denison died Monday at Manilla Manor in Manilla, Iowa.
