Merle L. Cooley
Merle L. Cooley, 81, of South Sioux City died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at a Ponca, Neb., nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Dakota City Cemetery, with the Rev. Terry Graham officiating. There will be no visitation. Becker-Hunt Funeral Home of South Sioux City is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Cooley was born May 28, 1916, in South Sioux City, the son of Edward L. and Jennie R. (Little) Cooley.
He married Mildred A. Wilson on Nov. 10, 1945, in Sioux City. She died Nov. 10, 1981, in South Sioux City.
He was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad and later for 12 years by Johnson Biscuit before retiring.
He was a member of the Gospel Lighthouse.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Esther and Earl Messerschmidt of Dakota City; and two grandsons, Mike and Todd Mallett.
Maria E. Mayorga
Maria E. Mayorga, 52, of South Sioux City died Monday at an Omaha hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City. Burial will be in St. Michael Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a scriptural service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Becker-Hunt Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Michael Pakeltis
Michael Pakeltis, 82, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, in Sioux City.
There will be no services or visitation. The body has been cremated. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Pakeltis was born May 28, 1915, in Sioux City, the son of Matthew T. and Rose (Pacunas) Pakeltis. He graduated from East High School in 1933, where he was a member of the football team.
He married Ruby V. Rathbun on Oct. 1, 1939, in Sioux City.
He was a professional commercial and portrait photographer. He owned and operated Pakeltis Studio for 40 years, first in the Morningside area, then in the Commerce Building. He then worked for Sioux Tools for nine years, retiring in July 1977.
He was a charter member of the Exchange Club and a former member of the Moose Lodge and the Morningside Kwanis Club. He was awarded many state fair ribbons for his craft work.
Survivors include his wife and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl, and a sister, Emma Horton.
Maria Perez
Maria Guadalupe Perez de Salazar, 56, of Sioux City died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Visitation was Monday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Gaudalajara, Mexico.
Mrs. Perez was born Dec. 18, 1941, in Talpa, Jalisco, Mexico. She moved to Sioux City in 1993.
She married David Salazar in 1995, in Elk Point, S.D.
She was a member of the Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband; four sons, Jose Luis Perez of Mexico, Jose Gerardo Perez and Jose Perez Perez, both of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jose Roman Perez of Los Angeles; five daughters, Maria Socorro Perez and Martha Patricia Perez, both of Mexico, Maria Guadalupe Perez and Arcelia Perez, both of Sioux City, and Beatriz Perez of Los Angeles; her mother, Celia Fregoso Perez of Mexico; two brothers; and three sisters.
Loren L. Spates
Loren L. Spates, 71, of Sergeant Bluff died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff with Dr. Paul Samuelson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will be today from 3 to 9 p.m., with Masonic services at 7 p.m., at Christy, Smith & Hockenberry Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Mr. Spates was born Sept. 15, 1926,in Carthage, Mo., the son of Frank and Almyra (Jones) Spates.
He was raised in Dubuque, Iowa, where he attended Public School and Dubuque High School. He moved to Waterloo, Iowa, where he resided for several years before moving to Sioux City in 1962.
He received a college degree through a work-study program with IPS. He moved to Sergeant Bluff in 1990.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, in the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters, and during the Korean Conflict.
He married Dorothy Halaska Jan. 31, 1947, in Waterloo. She died March 8, 1996, in Sioux City.
Mr. Spates worked for Carnation Dairy in Waterloo for six years and then for IPS in Waterloo until he was transferred to Sioux City in 1962 to help build the Port Neal power plant. He was the systems dispatcher for IPS for 32 years, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of Community United Methodist Church and was active on all church boards and committees. He had been active in Triangle Masonic Lodge 643 A.F.& A.M., the Sioux City Consistory and Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, where he was past president of the Oriental Band. He had been a scoutmaster for 17 years and was a merit badge counselor. He had umpired Babe Ruth and Little League Baseball games and was a volunteer at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center and the Ronald McDonald House.
Survivors include a son, Jeff and his wife, Susan, of Sioux City; three daughters and their husbands, Julie and Fritz Burow of Sioux City, Sue and Dennis Henke of Fort Collins, Colo., and Lisa and Larry Franco of Sergeant Bluff; a brother, Chuck and his wife, Barbara, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister in infancy; a brother, LaVerne; and a great-granddaughter.
Pallbearers will be Andy Spates, Chris Keil, Adam Spates, Don Wood, Charlie Woodford and Chad Menefee.
Memorials may be directed to the Transportation Fund for Shriners Hospitals.

Laura M. Yeager, 80, of Sioux City died Monday at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

DENISON, Iowa - Milton Childress, 91, of Denison died Monday at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Denison. Burial will be in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.
Gladyce Cram
AURELIA, Iowa - Gladyce Carolyn Cram, 85, of Aurelia died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, at Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Aurelia, with Pastor Jack Weida and Mr. Bruce Rapp officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Wharton-Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia.
Mrs. Cram was born March 14, 1912, in Aurelia, the daughter of Henry R. and LuEllen (Dice) Stutz. She graduated from Aurelia High School in 1930.
She married Ervil D. Rapp Oct. 21, 1932, in Aurelia. He died Sept. 29, 1988. She married Duane Cram Feb. 2, 1990.
She was employed in the Aurelia School lunchroom and as a beautician.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the church circle and the Pythian Sisters. She enjoyed playing pinochle, golfing and sewing.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Dayton Hunter of Rockford, Ill., and Joleen and Jerry Bruce of Aurelia; three sons and their wives, Kenneth and Merna Rapp of Phoenix, Ariz., Darrell and Roberta Rapp of St. Cloud, Minn., and Terry and Susan Rapp of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three stepdauhgters and their husbands, Jackie and William Stutz of Flagstaff, Ariz., Lona and Michael Lease of Ingelwood, Colo., and Patricia and Phillip Spencer of Merdian, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles Wesley, Irwin, Henry and Glenn; two sisters, Cathryn Silvernale and Jean White; and three infant grandchildren.

DENISON, Iowa - Berdine Ehrichs, 78, of Denison died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha.

Edna Emry
EMERSON, Neb. - Edna Thedora Laverna Emry, 95, of Emerson, formerly of Allen, Neb., died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Neb..
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bressler-Humlicek Funeral Chapel in Wakefield, Neb., with the Rev. Richie White officiating. Burial will be in Springbank Friends Cemetery at Allen. Vistation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. led by the Rev. Nancy Tomlinson, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Emry was born Dec. 27, 1902, near Wakefield, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Evans) Woodward. She attended the local school and Wayne Normal College.
She married Ralph Emry on Jan. 14, 1921, in South Sioux City. The couple farmed near Allen until retiring in 1968, and moving into Allen. He died Oct. 5, 1980. She moved to Emerson in February 1991, to the Peg Benck's Home.
She was a member of Springbank Friends Church. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and cross-stitching.
Survivors include three sons, Fay of South Sioux City, Norris of Allen and Warren and his wife, JoAnne, of Belvidere, Ill.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two daughters-in-law, Bonnie and Elva.
Laura L. Greve
PENDER, Neb. - Laura Lily Greve, 88, of Pender died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Pender Community Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Pender, with Pastor Stanley Kwiecien officiating. Burial will be in St. Mark's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Pender.
Mrs. Greve was born March 27, 1909, near West Point, Neb., the daughter of Wenzel and Lily (Petz) Sila. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended School District 36 in Cuming County in Nebraska.
She was employed at various homes in the area.
She married Gustav Greve on March 12, 1941, in West Point. The couple farmed near Pender until 1991, when they moved into Pender. She entered the Pender Care Center four years ago.
She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Pioneer Senior Center. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and raising flowers.
Survivors include her husband; three sons and their wives, Dennis and Pat of Scottsbluff, Neb., Glenn and Julie of Helena, Mont., and Ronnie and Nancy of Pender; eight grandchildren; a brother, Virgil; and two sisters, Marjorie Kubik and Myra Parr.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, five brothers and two sisters.

SHELDON, Iowa - A. Muriel Haht, 76, of Sheldon died Monday at Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.
Corrinne M. Hanson
DENISON, Iowa - Corrinne Mae Hanson, 90, of Denison, formerly of Soldier, Iowa, died Monday at Jenny Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Soldier Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Pearson Funeral Home in Soldier.
Dean Hastings
PENDER, Neb. - John Dean Hastings, 71, of Yutan, Neb., formerly of Pender, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Brian Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, Neb.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church in Pender, with the Rev. Charles Townsend and the Rev. James Kramper officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Pender. There will be a spiritual wake service today at 7 p.m. at the church.
Mr. Hastings born on June 30, 1926, in North Bend, Neb., the son of Jess and Evangeline (Malloy) Hastings. He moved with his family to Pender as a child, where he graduated from Pender High School in 1944.
He married Florence Meier on October 26, 1946, in Pender. They moved to Colorado, where he worked with heavy equipment. He was involved in the initial construction of Vail, Colo. They returned to Pender, where he did heavy equipment construction until he retired. In 1988, the couple moved to Yutan. He enjoyed hunting and the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Jane LeAnn Schroer and her husband, Ron, of Austin, Texas, and Mary Hastings of Yutan; four sons, Tom and his wife, Patty, of Gretna, Neb., Josef of Niobrara, Neb., Michael and his wife, Suzy, of Pender,and Ed and his wife, Patty, of Ralston, Neb.; and 15 grandchildren
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Norman Jensen
DIXON, Neb. - Norman Jensen, 67, of Dixon died Monday at Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Neb.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Dixon. Burial will be in St. Anne's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Schumacher Funeral Home in Laurel, Neb. There will be a vigil service at 7 p.m. today at the church.

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa - Merlin Kopp, 72, of Spirit Lake died Sunday at his residence.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spirit Lake. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be after 6:30 p.m. today, with a parish scripture service at 7 p.m., at the Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake.

IDA GROVE, Iowa - Ferdinand John "Fred" Krenk, 87, of Ida Grove died Monday at Morningside Rehabilitation and Care Center in Ida Grove.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m. and a Scripture service at 8 p.m., at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Raymond H. Kruse
PRIMGHAR, Iowa - Raymond H. Kruse, 82, of Primghar died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Church of Primghar, with the Rev. Richard Dunn officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Aurelia, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Primghar.
Mr. Kruse was born May 26, 1915, near Aurelia, the son of Gust and Emma (Betcher) Kruse. He moved with his family into Aurelia as a child and graduated from Aurelia High School in 1933.
Following his graduation, he worked in the grocery business in Aurelia.
He married Ethel Johnson on Sept. 10, 1939, in Aurelia. In 1943, the couple moved to Sioux City, where he managed the Council Oak Grocery Store. They returned to Aurelia in 1947, and he operated the Kruse Grocery Store until 1960, when he started Kruse Produce.
Mrs. Kruse died in November 1973.
He married Joyce Schmitt on Nov. 25, 1977, in Primghar.
He was employed as a salesman with Electrolux until his retirement.
He was a member of United Church of Primghar and was active on the O'Brien County Fair Board. While living in Aurelia, he drove the school bus for 27 years and was a volunteer on the Aurelia Fire Department. He was a trumpet player with the Little German Band and directed the Aurelia Summer Band. He enjoyed bowling, fishing and pitching horse shoes.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Tom and his wife, Judy, of Cherokee, Iowa, Don and his wife, Jean, of Gowrie, Iowa, and Roger of Crofton, Md.; two stepsons and their wives, Kylon and Kathryn Schmitt of Winterset, Iowa, and Kevin and Tressie Schmitt of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a daughter and her husband, Jan and Ron Cuthrell of Tucson, Ariz.; a stepdaughter and her husband, Joy and Dan Meyer of Chandler, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Lori Howe, Tim Cuthrell and Scott and Stacy Kruse; eight stepgrandchildren, Sarah, Megann, Will, Greg, Sheldon and Staci Schmitt and Todd and Katie Meyer; a great-grandson; and a sister, Ruby Christensen of Aurelia.
Genevieve V. Roach
JEFFERSON, S.D. - Genevieve V. Roach, 81, of Jefferson died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Prairie Estates Care Center at Elk Point, S.D.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson, with the Rev. Andrew Swietochowski officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Berkemier Funeral Home in Sioux City. Visitation will resume at 3 p.m. Thursday, with a rosary at 7 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the church.
Mrs. Roach was born March 30, 1916, in Jefferson, the daughter of Ovilla and Adel (Rubida) Bernard. She was raised in Jefferson and attended Jefferson schools.
She married Forrest C. Roach on June 3, 1936, in Jefferson. The couple made their home in Jefferson. He died Nov. 28, 1997.
She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and was an officer and active in the St. Peter's Altar Society and the St. Peter's Mothers Club. She was also a member of the Jefferson Senior Citizens and the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Barbara Jean and Eugene Burke of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sons, Larry and his wife, Carol, of Des Moines, Marty of Lincoln, Neb. and David and his wife, Janet, of Sioux City; a sister, Lucille Mulvihill of Sioux City; three sisters-in-law, Alice McMahon of Elkton, S.D., Mary Roach of Brookings, S.D., and Evelyn Bernard of Jefferson; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Bernard, and a sister, Jeanette La Croix.
Delbert D. Saxen
ANTHON, Iowa - Delbert D. Saxon, 61, of Bonsall, Calif., formerly of Anthon, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997, of asbestos lung cancer.
Memorial services were held at Riverview Evangelical Free Church in Bonsall. Burial was in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
Leona Ullrich
SALIX, Iowa - Leona May Ullrich, 82, of Salix died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m., at the church. Wood Funeral Home of Sloan, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Ullrich was born May 27, 1915, in Mapleton, Iowa, the daughter of Charles M. and Edith A. (Scholes) Jackson. She graduated from Mapleton High School.
On Jan. 17, 1947, she married Raymond M. Ullrich. The couple had farmed near Salix since 1950. She worked as a housekeeper for John Abraham and later was a self-employed seamstress in Oto, Iowa, and Salix, retiring in 1975.
Mr. Ullrich died July 23, 1979, in Omaha.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church at Salix, the Ladies Society, and the Rosary Society.
Survivors include three brothers, Lyle Jackson of Atlantic, Iowa, Russel Jackson of Sioux City and Robert Jackson and his wife, Heide, of Bellevue, Neb.; two sisters, Velma Kunkel of Salix, Iowa, and Marjorie and her husband, Howard Kovarna, of Merrill, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gilbert Wayne Jackson and Lloyd Allen Jackson, and a sister, Dorothy Marine Wallace.
Marion L. Thomas, 96, of Vermillion, S.D. died Tuesday; Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home of Vermillion.
