Ernest E. LaCroix
Ernest E. LaCroix, 78, of Lecerne, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, Salix, Iowa, and Jefferson, S.D., died Sunday at his son's residence in Roseville, Calif., following a brief illness.
Memorial services will be Saturday at Reichert's Funeral Chapel in Citrus Heights, Calif., and at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery at Jefferson.
Christine A. Macfarlane
Christine A. Macfarlane, 96, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, at Sunrise Retirement Community following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterain Church, with the Rev. Ronald R. Allin officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Mrs. Macfarlane was born March 18, 1901, in Sioux City, the daughter of Louis and Mary (Reid) Lambert. She attended Sioux City schools, graduating from Central High School in 1920.
She married Joseph A. Macfarlane on Sept. 27, 1930, in Vermillion, S.D. He died in 1963, in Sioux City.
She was employed as a secretary with the Sioux City Public Library from 1925 to 1933 and from 1963 until her retirement in 1971. The couple owned and operated the Macfarlane Donut Shop in downtown Sioux City from 1951 to 1963.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was a former deacon, the Sioux City Women's Club, the St. Luke's Auxiliary, the Sioux City Republican Women's Club and the former Sunrise Manor Guild.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Peter G. and Carla of Sioux City and Thomas L. and Lois of Green Valley, Ariz.; a daughter and her husband, Martha and Richard Wikert of Fremont, Neb.; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Oliver Lambert.
Memorials in her name may be directed to either First Presbyterian Church, Hospice of Siouxland or the Sunrise Retirement Community.
Loren L. Spates
Loren L. Spates, 71, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff with Dr. Paul Samuelson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Christy, Smith & Hockenberry Funeral Home of Sioux City is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Spates was born Sept. 15, 1926,in Carthage, Mo., the son of Frank and Almyra (Jones) Spates. He was raised in Dubuque, Iowa, where he attended Public School and Dubuque High School. He moved to Waterloo, Iowa, where he resided for several years before moving to Sioux City in 1962. He received a college degree through a work-study program with IPS. He moved to Sergeant Bluff in 1990.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, in the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters, and during the Korean Conflict.
He married Dorothy Halaska Jan. 31, 1947, in Waterloo. She died March 8, 1996 in Sioux City.
He worked for Carnation Dairy in Waterloo for six years and then for IPS in Waterloo until he was transferred to Sioux City in 1962 to help build the Port Neal power plant. He was the systems dispatcher for IPS for 32 years, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of Community United Methodist Church and was active on all church boards and committees. He had been active in Triangle Masonic Lodge 643 A.F.&A.M., the Sioux City Consistory and Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, where he was past president of the Oriental Band. He had been a scoutmaster for 17 years and was a merit badge counselor. He had umpired Babe Ruth and Little League Baseball games and was a volunteer at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center and The Ronald McDonald House.
Survivors include a son, Jeff and his wife, Susan, of Sioux City; three daughters and their husbands, Julie and Fritz Burow of Sioux City, Sue and Dennis Henke of Fort Collins, Colo., and Lisa and Larry Franco of Sergeant Bluff; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Chuck and his wife, Barbara, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister in infancy; a brother, LaVerne; and a great-granddaughter.
Pallbearers will be Andy Spates, Chris Keil, Adam Spates, Don Wood, Charlie Woodford and Chad Menefee.
Memorials may be directed to the Transportation Fund for Shriners Hospitals.
Warren R. Stienstra
Warren R. Stienstra, 73, of Sioux City died Tuesday at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church. Burial will be at a later date in Logan Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Florence Vander Weil
Florence E. Vander Weil, 88, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, at her daughter's residence in Sioux City following a brief illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dr. John Meyer and the Rev. Kathy Wicks officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home.
Mrs. Vander Weil was born Aug. 18, 1909, in Lawler, Iowa, the daughter of Ernst and Emma (Woolsdorf) Block. She attended school in Sanborn, Iowa.
She married Paul Vander Weil on Oct. 15, 1927, in Sheldon, Iowa. He died in August 1962, in Sioux City.
She had been a resident of Sioux City for 60 years. She was employed with St. Joseph Hospital from 1950 to 1973.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was a Cub Scout leader and den mother for several years.
Survivors include four sons and their wives, Cecil and Dorothy Vander Weil, Paul and Marlene Vander Wiel and Robert and Suzanne Vander Weil, all of Sioux City, and Richard and Janice Vander Weil of Spokane, Wash.; a daughter, Elaine Davis of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Robert and Mary Block of Mason City, Iowa; two sisters, Amy Marinelle and her husband, Marlin, and Edna Dolphin, all of Sanborn; 14 grandchildren, Terry Jessen, Greg, Wayne, Nancy, Elisabeth, Lora, Brent and Stacy Vander Weil, Linda Patterson, Russell Davis, Lora Henkowski, Ann Vander Wiel-Wilde and Steven and David Vander Wiel; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Steven and David Vander Wiel, Brent, Greg and Wayne Vander Weil and Chad Patterson.
Memorials in her name may be directed to either Hospice of Siouxland or Trinity Lutheran Church.
Laura M. Yeager
Laura M. Yeager, 80, of Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel, with Dr. John P. Hantla Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Yeager was born Jan. 21, 1917, in Sioux City, the daughter of William E. and Palma S. (Olson) Carlson. She graduated from Lawton (Iowa) High School and the National Business College.
She married William "Stan" Yeager on Aug. 17, 1941, in Lawton.
She was employed as a secretary with Goodwill Industries, retiring in 1976.
She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron and the Vesper Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Akron. She was a 4-H leader and was active in the Senior Center in Akron until moving to Sioux City.
Survivors include her husband; a son, William C. of Le Mars, Iowa; two daughters, Beverly Brown of Sioux City and Palma "Polly" L. and her husband, Keith Simkins, of Battle Creek, Iowa; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; and five step great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother and sister.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.

KIRON, Iowa - Wallace N. Bergren, 85, of Kiron died Monday at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron. Burial will be in Kiron Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa.
Ruth H. Carlson
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Ruth H. (Patterson) Carlson, 95, of Storm Lake died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Home in Newell, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Garfield Township Cemetery at rural Lytton, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
Corrinne M. Hanson
SOLDIER, Iowa - Corrinne Mae Hanson, 90, of Denison, Iowa, formerly of Soldier, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Soldier Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul E. Anderson and Pastor Paul Fohs officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Pearson Funeral Home in Soldier.
Mrs. Hanson was born Aug. 18, 1907, in Burbank, S.D., the daughter of Wallace L. and Emma O. (Russell) Cusick.
She attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D., and Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, S.D. She taught school in South Dakota before teaching at Soldier Elementary School from 1934 to 1936. She taught at Mondamin, Iowa, from 1936 to 1938 and at East Monona Elementary in Soldier from 1963 to 1971.
She married Orvan J. Hanson on Aug. 25, 1938, in Burbank. The couple farmed near Soldier until retiring in 1971. They wintered in Mesa, Ariz., from 1975 to 1985. They entered the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison in July 1985. He died Feb. 10, 1987, in Denison.
She was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday School. She was a 4-H leader and a member of the Farm Bureau Women. She was presently attending Redeemer Lutheran Church in Denison.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Cheryl and Jon Hallquist of Atlantic, Iowa; two sons and their wives, Orvan Jerry and Barbara of Miami, Okla., and Phillip and Erika of Abilene, Kan.; seven grandchildren, Corinne Srsen, Rainer, Phyllis, Jessica and Leland Hanson and Jason and Jay Hallquist; two step-grandchildren, DeAnn Ballard and Denise Jenkins; two great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Dorothy and Larry Herron of Williamsburg, Va.; and two brothers, Burdette Cusick of Mira Loma, Calif., and Harold Cusick of Mesa, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by a sister, LaVern Macy, and four brothers, Frank, Lee, Glenn and Lawrence.
Alfred Kast
HARTINGTON, Neb. - Alfred Kast, 76, of Hartington died Wednesday at Hartington Nursing Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, with a rosary at 2 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.
Johnny Keltz
SPENCER, Iowa - Johnny Keltz, 68, of Spencer died Tuesday at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Warner Chapel in Spencer. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Friday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Ida Klave
LE MARS, Iowa - Ida Klave, 86, of Le Mars died Wednesday at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery at Grant Township, rural Le Mars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Merlin J. Kopp
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa - Merlin John Kopp, 72, of Spirit Lake died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at his residence.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spirit Lake, with the Rev. Albert O. Grendler officiating. Turner Funeral Home of Spirit Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Kopp was born July 19, 1925, in Primghar, Iowa, the son of Francis and Clementine (Karhoff) Kopp. He graduated from Trinity High School in Sioux City.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1944 to 1946.
He married Benita Fae Kinard on Nov. 28, 1946, in Sioux City.
He was employed as a regional director for Allied Van Lines, supervising operation for 14 western states, while living in southern California. In 1974, they moved to Omaha, where he assumed management responsibilities for Allied's central operations. He retired in 1986 after 30 years with Allied and moved to the Iowa Great Lakes.
Survivors include his wife; six sons, Bradford of Mannheim, Germany, Gregory of Thousand Oak, Calif., Christoper of Jacksonville, Fla., and Karl, Kurt and Brian, all of Omaha; two daughters, Sharon of Oxnard, Calif., and Sandra of Charlotte, N.C.; and 13 grandchildren.
Fred Krenk
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Ferdinand John "Fred" Krenk, 87, of Ida Grove died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Morningside Rehab and Care Center in Ida Grove.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, with the Rev. Gerald Fisch officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., a rosary at 7:30 p.m. said by the Knights of Columbus and a Scripture service at 8 p.m., at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Mr. Krenk was born Dec. 6, 1910, in Dwight, Neb., the son of John F. and Catherine (Shorney) Krenk.
He married Helen Rose Barcel on April 29, 1941, in Abbey, Neb. The couple made their home in Ida Grove in 1943, where he farmed until retiring in 1984.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus in Storm Lake, Iowa. He was a 4-H leader for more than 40 years and a Boy Scout leader.
Survivors include his wife; five sons and their wives, Fred R. and Juella "Jo" of Wayne, Neb., John R. and Rachel and Bernard P. "Bernie" and Carol "Loni," all of Ida Grove, Gerald L. "Jerry" and Carol of Schoolcraft, Mich., and Benedict J. "Benny" and Colleen of Garden Grove, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Tille Fisher of Utica, Neb., and Kate Sedlock of Seward, Neb.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Emil and John; a sister, Helen Brammer; and an infant granddaughter.
Margaret McCorkindale
ODEBOLT, Iowa - Margaret M. McCorkindale, 91, of Sac City, Iowa, formerly of Odebolt, died Wednesday in Sac City.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church in Sac City. Burial will be in Odebolt Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.
Arthur Reimers
BOYDEN, Iowa - Arthur Reimers, 83, of Concord, Calif., formerly of Boyden, died Saturday at his residence.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at United Presbyterian Church in Boyden. Burial will be in Sheridan Township Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Boyden.
Clarence W. Ronell
ELK POINT, S.D. - Clarence W. Ronell, 94, of Spink, S.D., died Monday in Yucca Valley, Calif., following a lengthy illness.
Services will be Saturday in Yucca Valley.
Rebecca K. Springer
MACY, Neb. - Rebecca K. Springer, 47, of Milwaukee, Wis., formerly of Macy, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at St. Francis Hospital in Milwaukee.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Alfred W. Gilpin Community Building in Macy, with Valentine Parker Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Omaha Indian Cemetery. Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
Ms. Springer was born Nov. 1, 1950, in Winnebago, Neb., the daughter of Eugene and Cordelia (Porter) Springer. She was raised in Macy and attneded Flandreau Indian High School. She had lived in Milwaukee since she was 18 years old.
She attended Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Survivors include a daughter, Danine Springer of Milwaukee; a son, Gene Aubuchon III of Milwaukee; four sisters, Penny Springer of Independence, Mo., Marcia Tyndall of Walthill, Neb., Christine Saunsoci of Macy and Rhonda Springer of Granite Falls, Mont.; four brothers, Ronnie Springer of Omaha, Darryll and John Miller, both of Macy, and Harold Springer of Decatur, Neb.; two uncles; an aunt; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ruth Ann; and a grandmother, Lizzie Springer.
Marion L. Thomas
VERMILLION, S.D. - Marion L. Thomas, 96, of Vermillion died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, at Dakota Medical Center in Vermillion.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Vermillion, with the Rev. Elmer "Sandy" Aakre officiating. Burial will be in Bluff View Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church. Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home of Vermillion is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Thomas was born Oct. 6, 1901, in Neillsville, Wis., the daughter of Myron and Etta (Sweetland) Jacobs. She attended rural school near Neillsville and graduated from high school in Woodstock, Ill.
She married Alva Thomas on Sept. 24, 1927, in Chicago. The couple moved to Vermillion in July 1976. He died Aug. 23, 1976.
She was employed by the Mars Candy Company on the assembly line.
She was a member of Vermillion Senior Citizens Center and attended First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son and his wife, John and Loretta of Vermillion; a daughter and her husband, Maralyn and James Seward of Cleveland, Ohio; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Amy Wiegand
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Amelia L. "Amy" Wiegand, 84, of Storm Lake died Monday at Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake following a lengthy illness.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Private family burial will be today in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. Fratzke Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

LAWTON, Iowa - Lucille M. Zenor, 91, of Lawton died Wednesday at a Sioux City nursing home.
