Leonhard E. Baak
Leonhard E. Baak, 88, of Sioux City died Saturday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Trysil Bethesda Cemetery at Farwell, Minn. Visitation will be from 3 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Charlene A. Blackstone
Charlene A. Balckstone of Sioux City died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Elwood Rieke officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today, with the family present from 4 to 5 p.m., at the Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Mrs. Blackstone was born in Spinks, S.D., the daughter of Andy and Lise (Larson) Abrahamson. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Elk Point, S.D. High School and the National Business College.
She married Byron D. Blackstone on Jan. 27, 1955, in Sioux City. The couple worked at the Blackstone Sunset Plaza Hardware Store. He died Dec. 9, 1982. She owned the Blackstone Leeds Hardware Store until her retirement.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Mrs. Samuel Locklin of Atlanta, Ga.; a stepgrandson, Gregory L. Smith Jr.; a sister, Dorothy A. Robinson of Sioux City; three brothers, Norman of Spinks, Lewis of Sacremento, Calif. and Leo of Brandon, S.D.; and several nieces and nephews.
Sophie J. Cimino
Sophie J. Cimino, 84, of South Sioux City died Saturday at a South Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Michael Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.
Beulah A. Eidsmoe
Beulah A. Eidsmoe, 92, of Sioux City died Friday at a Sioux City care center.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Beresford, S.D. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Dennis E. Foster
Dennis E. Foster, 57, of Marshall, Wis., formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998 at a Madison, Wis. hospital.
A family memorial service was held Saturday at Hart-Vick Funeral Home in Marshall, with Rev. Paul Anderson officiating. A memorial service will also be held Monday at Northwestern United Methodist Church in Mellette, S.D.
Mr. Foster was born Sept. 22, 1940 in Sioux Falls, S.D., the son of Floyd and Evelyn (Burt) Foster. He was raised in Sioux City.
He married Mary Salzman on Dec. 18, 1965. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1959 to 1963. He had lived in Mellette, S.D., prior to moving to Marshall in June 1997.
He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts in South Dakota and was a life member of the National Rifle Association. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Tami Cason of Sioux City; one son, Dennis of Mellette; 2 grandsons, Jeremy and Jason Cason; one great granddaughter; his mother of Aberdeen, S.D.; and many aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Memorials to the American Heart Association would be appreciated.
Kenneth B. Fox
Kenneth B. Fox, 41, of South Sioux City died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, near Emerson, Neb. of injuries suffered in an auto accident.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Ross Burkhalter officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home. The body will then be taken to the church for visitation until 8:30 p.m., with a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m.
Mr. Fox was born Oct. 16, 1956, in Sioux City, the son of Alfred W. and Peggy (Spring) Fox. He attended St. Michael School in Sioux City and graduated from Heelan High School in 1974. He graduated from Briar Cliff College in 1984, with a degree in business and psychology.
He married LeeAnn Bates on Oct. 26, 1979, in Sioux City. He was employed with the City of Sioux City for nine years, then with the City of South Sioux City as a water and sewer superintendent for nine years. He was currently employed as the water and sewer superintiendent for the City of Wayne, Neb.
He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Grady and a daughter, Katie, both at home; his mother of Leeds; three brothers and their wives, James and Val of Sioux City, Don and Didi of Olathe, Kan. and Bill and Pam of Skokie, Ill.; two sisters, Mary Anderson and Ruth and her husband Jim Lesline, all of Sioux City; and 21 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, his grandparents and a nephew.
Pallbearers will be Chris and Greg Fox, Tommy, Danny and Jeff Anderson, Jimmy Lesline Jr., Brad and Brent Bates, and Bobby Loggins.
Daniel A. Lewis
Daniel Alan Lewis, 19, of Pickens, S.C. died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, in Pickens of injuries suffered in an auto accident.
Services were held Thursday, Jan. 15, at Gap Hill Baptist Church in Pickens, with Dr. Boyce Whitman officiating. Burial was in the Gap Hill Cemetery. Dillard Memorial Funeral Home of Pickens was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Lewis was born Oct. 28, 1978, in Bad Tolz, Germany, the son of Lynn Lewis and Barbara (Barrett) Summerall. He graduated from Pickens High School in 1996, and was in his second year at the Tri-County Technical College. He was employed with Boots Holder Builders.
He was a member of Gap Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his father and his wife, Lynn and Gail Lewis of Sioux City; his mother and her husband, Barbara and Stan C. Summerall of Pickens; a brother, Curtis Summerall of Pickens; four half brothers, Paul, Benjamin, Charles and Jacob, all of Sioux City; and his grandparents, Clarette Barrett of Pickens, Charles T. Summerall of Easley, S.C., and Edward and Lavonne Lewis of Sioux City.
Robert H. McCord
Robert H. "Bob" McCord, 84, of Sioux City died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at his residence following a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Westminister Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Richard Francis officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m. conducted by the Golden Rule Masonic Lodge 236 A.F. & A.M. of Allen, Neb., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Mr. McCord was born June 20, 1913, in Cherokee, the son of Howard and Inez (Hubbard) McCord. He was raised in Cherokee and graduated from Wilson High School in 1934. Following graduation, he was employed at the lumberyard in Cherokee.
He married Mildred P. Patrick on Dec. 7, 1935, in Cherokee. He served in the Civil Service from 1942 to 1945. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1945, until moving to Allen, Neb. in 1954. They returned to Sioux City in 1989. He was employed with Miller-Kidder Chevorlet Company in Sioux City. He then purchased a car dealership in Allen and owned his own garage for 25 years. He retired in 1977.
He had been the mayor of Allen for 10 years and held other town offices. He was a member of the Allen Fire Department for 25 years, the Golden Rule Masonic Lodge 236 A.F. & A.M., where he was a past Master and held other offices, and the Order of the Eastern Star, where he was a past Worthy Patron and held other offices.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Garold and Marlene of Aloha, Ore.; two daughters and their husbands, Karan and Gerald McMannis of Omaha, Neb. and Patricia and Richard Wyant of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Glen and Annabelle of Auburn, Calif.; a sister, Charlene Leake of Hemet, Calif.; a brother-in-law and his wife, R.A. Patrick Jr. and Joan of Los Molinos, Calif.; and two sisters-in-law, Julia Patrick of Marcus, Iowa and Ruth Stieneke of Washta, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille and LuIda.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons and nephews.
Ann Marie Peters
Ann Marie Peters, 94, of Sioux City died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at the Sunrise Retirement Community following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. George P. Zehnder officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mrs. Peters was born June 3, 1903, in Webster City, Iowa, the daughter of Emil and Marie Louise (Block) Wurch. She attended school in Webster City.
She married Adolph H. Peters on Sept. 25, 1926, in Webster City. The couple lived in Waterloo, Iowa and then Freeport, Ill., before moving to Sioux City in 1940. He died Feb. 9, 1987, in Sioux City.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Women's League and the 55 Plus Club all of the church. She was also a member of the Sioux City Women's Club.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Donald and Darlene of Homewood, Ill.; two daughters, Betty Beyer of Sioux City and Carolyn and her husband Leslie Schmeckpeper of Pender, Neb.; a brother, Ed Wurch of Webster City; seven grandchildren, Kathryn Murray, Sherri Kuczynski, Steven Peters, Susan Moy, Robert, Scott and Kurt Schmeckpeper; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters, and a son-in-law, Bob Beyer.
Pallbearers will be Robert, Scott, Kurt and Alan Schmeckpeper, Steven and Douglas Peters.
Memorials in her name may be directed to either St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hospice of Siouxland or the Sunrise Retirement Community.
Clarence O. Saline
Clarence O. Saline, 81 of Sioux City died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. James Nelson, of Third Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. E.D. Pappadackis officiating, at the funeral home.
Mr. Saline was born July 31, 1916, in Ironwood, Mich., the son of Carl and Sadie (Vik) Saline Sr. He graduated from Ironwood High School in 1934. He served in the U.S. Army as a corporal in the Engineers Corps, during World War II.
He married Corrine Strandburg on Feb. 15, 1946, in Dakota City. He was employed with Sioux Tools for 37 years, retiring in 1980. He was also employed with Dividend Gas for 27 years.
He was a former member of Third Presbyterian Church, the Scandinavian Society, the Moose Lodge and the Eagles. He enjoyed pool, bowling and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ronald of Sioux City and Larry and his wife Judy of Schleswig, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Barbara and Ed Stuart of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Jr. and a grandson.
Richard J. Walding
Richard J. "Dick" Walding, 72, of Sioux City died Friday at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Violet M. Brouillette
WESTFIELD, Iowa - Violet Marie Brouillette, 83, of Westfield died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at the Hass Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron, Iowa, with the Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery at Jefferson, S.D. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Brouillette was born May 27, 1914, in Albert Lea, Minn., the daughter of Theodore and Susanna (Jackson) Counter.
She married Delphis Brouillette on June 24, 1930, in Tripp County, S.D. The couple lived in Jefferson for several years before moving to rural Westfield. He died March 8, 1961. She enjoyed gardening and animals.
Survivors include two sons, Peter of Inwood, Iowa and Richard and his wife Mary of Bartlett, Ill.; four daughters and their husbands, Violet and Carl Husk of Westfield, Ellen and Arnold March of Hawarden, Elsie and Vernon Voss of Clear Lake, Calif. and Sally and Ronald Peters of Cherokee, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Floyd and Albert of Sioux City, Vernon of Houston, Texas and William of Green Castle, Ind.
She was preceded in death by a son, David Joseph; a grandson, Michael Voss; a great-great-grandson; and four brothers, Napoleon, Anthon, Theodore and Earl.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Steven Husk, Don and Dan March, Bill Voss, Richard and Paul Brouillette, Jay, Todd and Marc Peters.
Lester J. Schnieders
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Lester J. Schnieders, 80, of Storm Lake, formerly of Mallard, Iowa, died Friday at his residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be today, with a Legion of Mary rosary at 3:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
Edward Schnurr
HOSPERS, Iowa - Edward Schnurr, 76, of Hospers died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital in Orange City, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hospers, with his son Monsignor Dennis M. Schnurr officiating and with Bishop Lawrence D. Soens and Bishop Daniel DeNardo in attendance. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Schnurr was born July 18, 1921, in rural Granville, Iowa, the son of Herman and Emma (Niichel) Schnurr. He was raised near Granville and attended both rural school and St. Joseph's Catholic School in Granville. He moved with his family to Hospers, where he attended St. Anthony's Catholic School. He then farmed with his parents.
He married Eleanor Jungers on Nov. 18, 1942, in Hospers. The couple lived near Hospers, where they farmed until 1945. He was employed with Jungers Elevator, Wounstra Meats, Wounstra Packing Plant and then managed the Kerr McGee gas station in Hospers until 1979, when he went into semi-retirement. He continued to do small engine repair.
He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, where he mowed the church grounds for many years. He enjoyed small engine repairs.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Delores and her husband Marv Schultes of Hastings, Neb., Carolyn and her husband Larry Arens of Remsen and Irene Brant of Hospers; three sons, Richard and his wife Judy of Hospers, Monsignor Dennis M. of Washington D.C. and Mike of Alton, Iowa; his mother of Fulda, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six sisters, Helen Land of Lakewood, Calif., Blanche Eich of Sheldon, Iowa, Mildred and her husband Pete Thom of Phoenix, Ariz., Irene Cullin of Des Moines, Mary and her husband James Ahlers of Fulda, Minn. and Bertill and her husband Bob Nepper of Le Sueur, Minn.; and three brothers, Bernard of Excelsior, Minn. Donald and his wife Mildred and Gerald, all of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Lucille Joanning.
Pallbearers will be Bryan and Ken Arens, Dan and Kevin Barnes, Keith Schnurr, Michael and Thomas Schultes.
