Leonhard E. Baak
Leonhard E. Baak, 88, of Sioux City died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul G. Sieveking officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Trysil Bethesda Cemetery at Farwell, Minn., with military rites conducted by the Gust F. Holden American Legion Post 253. Visitation will be from 3 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Mr. Baak was born May 20, 1909, in Ricketts, Iowa, the son of William F. and Clara (Wendt) Baak. He was raised in Ricketts and graduated from Ute (Iowa) High School in 1927. He operated the Ricketts Grocery Store. He graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, where he received his teaching degree.
He married Odella Solheim on Aug. 8, 1953, in Eagle Bend, Minn. He taught school in Shelby, S.D. for two years. He was then principal in Harmony, Minn., for a few years. He received his master's degree from Colorado College and University of South Dakota. In 1953, he received his doctorate from the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo.
He was a language instructor at St. Olaf College for five years, then became the head of the language department at Emporia College in Emporia, Kan. He taught at the Graduate College at Colorado College from 1955 to 1963, in the summer months. In 1960, he moved to Sioux City and became the chairman of Modern Language Division at Morningside College and head of the German department and taught German language. He retired in 1974, but continued teaching some until 1982. He was a volunteer teacher at Lutheran High School in North Sioux City for two years and tutored in his home.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife and two cousins and their families.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence.
Beulah A. Eidsmoe
Beulah Ann Eidsmoe, 92, of Sioux City died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at her residence.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William Steward officiating. Private family burial will be in Beresford, S.D. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Mrs. Eidsmoe was born April 1, 1905, in Arlington, Ill. She moved with her family to Howard, S.D. and later to Presho, S.D., where she graduated from high school in 1922. She attended Southwestern State Normal College and taught rural school near Presho for two years. In 1924, she attended Yankton College Conservatory of Music, participating in various musical organizations, including choir and college glee club. She was employed as the director of public school music in Woonsocket, S.D.
She married Russell M. Eidsmoe on Nov. 25, 1926. The couple had lived in Hetland, Volga and Yankton, S.D., before moving to Sioux City in 1947.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Women's Society of Christian Service, the P.E.O. Chapter DX, the Wimodeusis Study Club, the Goodwill Auxiliary, the Alpha Lamda Delta, the Morningside College Women's Club, the Sioux City Women's Club, the A.A.U.W., the Y.W.C.A., the Siouxland Senior Center and the Sioux City Country Club. She enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Robert and Leone of Sioux City and Rio Verde, Ariz. and John and Marlene of Montgomery, Ala.; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Orr, Eric, David, Kirsten and Justin Eidsmoe; two great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, William and Lily Hoffert of Albuquerque, N.M.; and three sisters, Mae Kelly of Rapid City, S.D., Adeline Scollard of Spokane, Wash. and Valeria and her husband Sheldon Coe of Vero Beach, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Nora Crawford.

Daniel A. Lewis
Daniel Alan Lewis, 19, of Pickens, S.C. died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, in Pickens of injuries suffered in an auto accident.
Services were held Thursday, Jan. 15, at Gap Hill Baptist Church in Pickens, with Dr. Boyce Whitman officiating. Burial was in the Gap Hill Cemetery. Dillard Memorial Funeral Home of Pickens was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Lewis was born Oct. 28, 1978, in Bad Tolz, Germany, the son of Lynn Lewis and Debra (Barrett) Summerall. He graduated from Pickens High School in 1996, and was in his second year at the Tri-County Technical College. He was employed with Boots Holder Builders.
He was a member of Gap Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his father and his wife, Lynn and Gail Lewis of Sioux City; his mother and her husband, Debra and Stan C. Summerall of Pickens; a brother, Curtis Summerall of Pickens; four half brothers, Paul, Benjamin, Charles and Jacob, all of Sioux City; and his grandparents, Clarette Barrett of Pickens, Charles T. Summerall of Easley, S.C., and Edward and Lavonne Lewis of Sioux City.
Clarence O. Saline
Clarence O. Saline, 81 of Sioux City died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. James Nelson, of Third Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. E.D. Pappadackis officiating, at the funeral home.
Mr. Saline was born July 31, 1916, in Ironwood, Mich., the son of Carl and Sadie (Vik) Saline Sr. He graduated from Ironwood High School in 1934. He served in the U.S. Army as a corporal in the Engineers Corps, during World War II.
He married Corrine Strandburg on Feb. 15, 1946, in Dakota City. He was employed with Sioux Tools for 37 years, retiring in 1980. He was also employed with Dividend Gas for 27 years.
He was a former member of Third Presbyterian Church, the Scandinavian Society, the Moose Lodge and the Eagles. He enjoyed pool, bowling and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ronald Saline of Sioux City and Larry Strandburgand his wife Judy of Schleswig, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Barbara and Ed Stuart of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Jr. and a grandson, Jason Saline.
Pallbearers will be Quent Strandburg, Bill Rasmussen, Chuck Estochen, Leroy Bell, Loren Bush and Gary Jones.
Richard Satterfield
Richard T. Satterfield, M.D., 66, of Sioux City died Saturday at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home. Burial will in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Vinal P. Smith
Vinal Perrin Smith, 77, of Sioux City died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at the Indian Hills Care Center following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mike Pappadackis officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Graceland Park Cemetery at Madison, S.D. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Smith was born March 4, 1920, in Moody County, S.D., the son of John Wark and Ruby Leorna (Perrin) Smith. He gradauted from high school in Brookings, S.D.
He married Ethel Swedeland in 1939. He farmed in the Brookings area until 1950, then lived in several different area's until 1977, when he moved to Sioux City.
He was a member of the Frateranl Order of the Eagles.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Bradley and Paula of Albuquerque, N.M. and Derrell and Sue of Tolleson, Ariz.; a daughter-in-law, Janet Smith of Kankakee, Ill.; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Joe Young of Lovespark, Ill.; two brothers and their wives, Donald and Marilyn L. of Sioux City and Vernon and Vivian J. of National City, Calif.; and numerous grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Charles and Roger; and a brother, Robert W.
Richard J. Walding
Richard J. "Dick" Walding, 72, of Sioux City died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Lawrence L. McCarty officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Mr. Walding was born Dec. 27, 1925, in Sioux City, the son of John R. and Loretta M. (O'Shonessy) Walding. He gradauted from Trinity High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 and from 1950 to 1951. He also served in the Navy Reserves from 1946 to 1950.
He married Evelyn M. Ballard on Sept. 8, 1948, in Sioux City. He was employed as a carman with The Great Northern and the Burlington Northern Railroad for 40 years.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, the Disabled American Veteran Chapter 54, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Northwest Iowa Woodcarvers and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and was a Boy Scout leader. He went to the Philmont Scout Ranch a few times as a Scout counselor. He enjoyed photography and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Donna and Dan Nelson and Joyce and Pat Gastro, all of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Leo and Pam of Phoenix, Ariz. and Vince and Sue of Portage, Ind.; two sisters and their husbands, Mary Jean and George Duzik of Sioux City and Margaret and Les Closner of Des Moines; two brothers and their wives, Jack and Arlene and Ed and Claire, all of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Theresa Walding.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Carl, Ben and Jennifer Nelson, Angie, Shannon and Kimberly Gastro, Nick and Amanda Walding.

BATTLE CREEK, Iowa - Louis Derr, 96, of Battle Creek died Saturday at Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Maple Valley American Legion Post 364. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Battle Creek. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

GEORGE, Iowa - Fred H.F. Duin, 77, of George died Saturday at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zoar Presbyterian Church in rural George. Burial will be in Zoar Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Bolin Funeral Home in George.

LITTLE ROCK, Iowa - Gordon Schaa, 82, of Little Rock died unexpectedly Sunday at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Ashton, Iowa. Burial will be in Gilman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Walton, Roste and Vogel Funeral Home in Sibley.
Mason R. Skewis
SHELDON, Iowa - Mason R. Skewis, 85, of Sheldon died Saturday at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Sheldon. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Sheldon Funeral Service.
Hilda Tigges
PETERSON, Iowa - Hilda Tigges, 94, of Peterson died Saturday in Spencer, Iowa.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Congregational Church in Peterson. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the Warner Funeral Home in Peterson.
Geneva Vanden Bosch
ROCK VALLEY, Iowa - Geneva Jean Vanden Bosch, 64, of rural Rock Valley died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at the Sioux Center, Iowa Community Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley, with the Rev. Jelmer Groenewold and the Rev. John B. Hulst officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.
Mrs. Vanden Bosch was born June 7, 1933, near Ireton, Iowa, the daughter of George and Celia (Vanden Berg) Vande Kamp. She graduated from Ireton Christian School and was a live-in caretaker for families with small children in the Ireton area.
She married Leonard J. Vanden Bosch on Oct. 21, 1954, in Ireton. The couple lived in Ocheyedan, Iowa, until moving to their farm near Rock Valley in 1960. She helped out on the farm and was the farm secretary.
She was a charter member of Trinity Christian Reformed Church and the Share Our Faith Society.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Leon and Laurie and Loren and Terri, all of Rock Valley; two daughters and their husbands, Nancy and Ken Zevenbergen of Phoenix, Ariz. and Marlys and Gary Moget of Sioux Center; six brothers and their wives, Gerrit and Priscilla, Hilbert and Loraine, Marvin and Harriet and Alan and Marlene, all of Rock Valley, George and Darla of Hull, Iowa and Vernon and Leona of Orange City, Iowa; four sisters and their husbands, Winnifred and Alfred De Jong and Ceclia and Marvin Ten Napel, all of Ireton, Geri and John Van Holland of Rock Valley and Norma and Nelson Nikkel of Sully, Iowa; and 11 grandchildren, Jennifer, Tessa, Bret, Ashley and Joshua Vanden Bosch, Malinda, Grant, Sarah and Brian Zevenbergen, Melissa and Matthew Moget.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
