Harry G. Ahrens
Harry G. Ahrens, 68, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Monday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Sophie J. Cimino
Sophie J. Cimino, 84, of South Sioux City died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at a South Sioux City nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael Catholic Church, with the Rev. David Liewer officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.
Mrs. Cimino was born May 27, 1913, in Poland. She married John J. Cimino on Nov. 28, 1932, in Dakota City. She was employed with Armour and Company and Cudahay's Packing Planets for many years and also as a sales clerk with Woolco. He died April 12, 1980, in Sioux City.
She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the Ladies Auxiliary Eagles 2492 in South Sioux City.
Survivors include a son and his wife, John and Mary "Haahr" of South Sioux City; a daughter, Mary Jo Dye of Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Stella Sokolowski, Bernice Hildebrandt and Gladys Blades.
Pallbearers will be Chad and Steve Cimino, Jens Bossow, Troy Plummer, Shane Cain and Jerome Hansen.
Marie B. Holmes
Marie B. Holmes, 81, of Sioux City, formerly of South Sioux City, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at her daughter's residence following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Holmes was born Dec. 9, 1916, in Manda, N.D., the daughter of William R. and Elizabeth "Bessie" (Monson) Brown.
She married Frank Holmes in September 1940, in Omaha, Neb. He died Jan. 24, 1947, in Sioux City. She was employed as a housekeeper and in child care.
She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and a former member of the Altar Society.
Survivors include two sons, Fred Smith of Downing, Calif. and Frank and his wife Mary Beth Holmes of South Sioux City; four daughters, Patricia Cordell of Mesa, Ariz., Sarah Jane Rasmussen, Rosemarie and her husband William Lepore of Houston, Texas and Phyllis and her husband Paul Hass of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, John and LaVaune Brown of Tacoma, Wash.; three sisters, Gladys Halzworth of Everett, Wash., Gilda and her husband Jack Osborn of Washington and Geneva and her husband Lee Jahnke of Seattle, Wash.; 25 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Vivon Travland; a sister, Delores Milligan; and a grandson, Todd Keihl.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Tim and Erik Holmes, Steve Hass, Corwin Bauerly, Chuck Anderson and Pat Dirks.
Pearl E. McLang
Pearl E. McLang, 91, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday in Omaha.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Max Robertson
Max Lea Robertson, 73, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Wednes day at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 2126 Court St., Sioux City.
Mr. Robertson was born Jan. 23, 1925, in Nenzel, Neb., the son of Perry and Alida Robertson. He was raised in Crookston, Neb. and moved to Sioux City 41 years ago.
He was employed with Sioux City Transit Lines and the City of Sioux City as a city maintance worker for nine and a half years.
He served in the U.S. Army as a medic. He enjoyed raising flowers and fishing.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Terry J. and Belinda of Sioux City; a stepdaughter, Vinda Smith of Thourton, Colo.; a stepson and his wife, Fred J. and Meg Lange III of Sioux City; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his ex-wife and a grandson.
Richard Satterfield
Richard Theodore Satterfield, M.D., 66, of Sioux City, formerly of Springfield, Neb., died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Terry Cain officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Dr. Satterfield was born Feb. 19, 1931, in Springfield, the son of George Daniel and Mary Elvira (Darling) Satterfield. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1948 and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1953, with a bachlor of education degree. He taught science in Aurora, Neb.
He served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant for two years and in the Army Reserves for four years attaining the rank of captain. While in the reserves, he attended the University of Nebraska College of Medicine and graduated in 1960, with a doctor of medicine degree.
He married Mary Beth Shreffler on Dec. 26, 1959, in Lincoln, Neb. He completed his internship at the San Bernardino County Hospital, then served as a staff physician at the Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino, Calif. from 1961 to 1962. He was a family physician in Sargent, Neb. from 1962 to 1964.
He completed a residency in psychiatry with a fellowship in Child Psychiatry at the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute in Omaha, Neb. from 1964 to 1968. He then worked as a staff physician at the Norfolk Regional Center in Norfolk, Neb. from 1968 to 1969.
In 1969, he moved to Sioux City, where he served as the first medical director for the Siouxland Mental Health Center, until 1972, when he started a private practice. That year he became board certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Along with his private duties, he represented Sioux City as a member of the Iowa Foundation for Medical Care from 1976 to 1984. He also served as medical director for Woodbury Homestead Inc. from 1987 to 1996 and served on the medical staff of both Marian Health Center and St. Luke's Regional Medical Center.
He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Iowa Medical Society, the Woodbury Medical Society, the Iowa Psychiatric Society, where he was secretary/treasurer and president, and the American Psychiatric Association and became a Fellow in 1979.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jeff of Los Angeles, Calif. and Mark and his wife Debra of Jonesboro, Ariz.; two daughters, Cindy and her husband Tom Lane of Sioux City and Suzanne of DeKalb, Ill.; a grandson, John; a brother and his wife, Benjamin and Margherita of Santa Barbara, Calif.; three sisters, Alice and her husband William Bev Scholefield of Malibu, Calif., Betty Jean Lefteruk of Playa Del Rey, Calif. and Jeannette and her husband David Miller of Elgin, Ill.; 10 nephews; and 12 nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, George D. Jr., Donald F. and Alfred in infacy; and three sisters, Ruby Frankenberg, Ruth Satterfield and Mary Pear Satterfield in childhood.
Memorials in his name may be directed to the Siouxland Regional Cancer Center Foundation.
Florence Thatcher
Florence Thatcher, 95, of Sioux City died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, in Sioux City.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Central Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Brygger Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 9 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Mrs. Thatcher was born Oct. 13, 1902, in Holstein, Iowa, the daughter of Benjamin and Lillian (Wintrode) Freeman. She graduated from Kingsley, Iowa High School.
She married LeRoy Thatcher on June 5, 1925, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple lived in the Sioux City area and California, retiring to Sioux City in 1970. He died April 12, 1981, in Sioux City.
She was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Duane and Helen of Sioux City; three daughters, Ruth Ann Campbell of Iowa City, Iowa, Joan and her husband Robert Stein of Louisville, Ky. and Janet and her husband James Cutler of Genoa Bay, Vancouver Island, British Columbia; two sisters, Gladys Harvey of Cherokee, Iowa and Blanche Wilson of Yorba Linda, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, including Sheryl Gripps; 21 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters and four grandchildren.
Memorials in her name may be directed to either Missions at Central Baptist Church, Casa X-Mas Fund at Wesley United Methodist Church or Hospice of Siouxland.
John "Kermit" Kersting, 87, of Merrill, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City died Sunday; Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home.
Eva L. Armstrong
PONCA, Neb. - Eva L. Armstrong, 85, of Ponca died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Ponca, with the Rev. Richard Hinkle officiating. Burial will be in Silver Ridge Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca. Visitation will resume at 6:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church.
Mrs. Armstrong was born July 21, 1912, in rural Ponca, the daughter of Samuel and Louise (Schram) Dickey. She attended Sunnyside School and graduated from Newcastle, Neb. High School in 1929. She attended Wayne State College and received her teaching certificate. She taught rural school in Dixon County for six years.
She married Carl Armstrong on June 6, 1935, in Newcastle. The couple farmed in the Silver Creek Township area for 49 years. They moved into Ponca in 1984. She was still involved in the farm operation.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Sunshine Club, the P.E.O. Caahpter DG, the Ponca Historical Society, the Friends of the Library, the Better Ponca Foundation, the Ponca Senior Center, the Presbyterian Women and was a former 4-H leader. She enjoyed gardening, quilting and knitting.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Howard and his wife Fran of Gaylord, Minn., David of Ponca and Gregory and his wife Angela of Evergreen, Colo.; five daughters, Nancy Dunn and Kathryn Armstrong, both of Omaha, Margaret and her husband Walt Fiegel and Jane and her husband Stan Wilke, all of Sioux City and Linda and her husband Mark Krueger of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister, Rose Garner of McCook Lake, S.D.; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Crandall and Fern Tuttle; and four brothers, Dean, Sam, Ray and Roy.
Louis Derr
BATTLE CREEK, Iowa - Louis Derr, 96, of Battle Creek died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek, with the Rev. Benjamin Ray officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Maple Valley American Legion Post 364. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Battle Creek. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
Mr. Derr was born Dec. 24, 1901, in Battle Creek, the son of Louis and Lena (Meyer) Derr. He studies engineering at Iowa State University and was employed with Woolworth's before returning to Battle Creek in the 1930s.
He began a 60-year career in the printing and newspaper business. He was a linotype operator with the Battle Creek Times and did bindery work for the Pioneer Record in Ida Grove, Iowa, where he continued to work until the age of 92, when the paper was discontinued. He invented several improvements for newspaper printing and mailing. He was also a projectionist at the Luna Theater for many years, assisted in a laundromat business for a time and was an area clock repairman. He entered Willow Dale Care Center in November 1997.
He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, stationed in the Pacific Theater, from 1942 to 1945.
Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Watkins of Battle Creek; three nephews, Paul Osborn, Duane and Roger Schnidt; and three nieces, Mildred Hunt, Karen Vogt and Rosemary Albers.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eunice Osborn and Enid Schmidt.
Ella Drake
SUTHERLAND, Iowa - Ella Drake, 96, of Sutherland died Sunday at the Millie's Rest Home in Sutherland.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Sutherland. Burial will be in Waterman Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Warner Funeral Home in Sutherland.
Deborah Frideres
DENISON, Iowa - Deborah Frideres, 48, of Denison died Sunday at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Neb.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Burial will be in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Marie Aletta Grotenhuis, 92, of Orange City died Sunday at the Long Term Care Facility of the Orange City Municipal Hospital.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Newkirk Reformed Church in Newkirk, Iowa. Burial will be in Newkirk Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

OCHEYEDAN, Iowa - Jacoba "Cubby" Harberts, 61, of Ocheyedan died Sunday at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Christian Reformed Church in Ocheyedan. Burial will be in Ocheyedan Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Andringa Funeral Chapel in Ocheyedan.
Mary Kroon
SHELDON, Iowa - Mary Kroon, 87, of Sheldon, formerly of Boyden, Iowa, died Saturday at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Reformed Church in Boyden. Burial will be prior the the service in Sheridan Township Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.
Ernest E. LaCroix
JEFFERSON, S.D. - Ernest E. LaCroix, 78, of Lucerne, Calif., formerly of Jefferson, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at his son's residence in Roseville, Calif. following a brief illness.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson. Memorial services were also held Saturday, Jan. 17, at Reichert's Funeral Chapel in Citrus Heights, Calif. Private burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery in Jefferson.
Mr. LaCroix was born Oct. 11, 1919, in Salix, Iowa, the son of Vetal and Corrine LaCroix. He was raised in the Salix area and Jefferson.
He married Darlene Allard on Jan. 15, 1942, in Sacramento, Calif. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, stationed in the Aleutian Islands for a time. He was employed as a carpenter/builder in the area and built his last home at the age of 75. The couple moved to Lucerne in 1989.
He was a member of Queen of the Rosary Catholic Church in Lucerne and the Sioux City Carpenters Union 948 since 1951.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, James and his wife Nancy of Roseville, Jerry of Forest Knolles, Calif. and Russel and his wife Rae Anne of Orangeville, Calif.; two daughters, Corrine and her husband Bernard Rourke of Dakota City and Susan of San Geronimo, Calif.; four brothers, Rene of Washington, Pete and Edward, both of Sioux City and Phillip of Sergeant Bluff; five sisters, Adwilda Blanchard and Amelia Tone, both of Sioux City, Eva LaCroix of Jefferson, Jeanette Cook of Omaha, Neb. and Yvonne Sirois of Lon Beach, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
Marlin Maranell
SANBORN, Iowa - Marlin Maranell, 73, of Sanborn died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sanborn, with the Rev. Kenneth Funke officiating. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Roseland Cemetery. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Sanborn Funeral Home.
Mr. Maranell was born Sept. 15, 1924, in Gaza, Iowa, the son of George Cecil and Ella (Parcaut) Maranell. He received his education in Archer, Iowa.
He married Amy Block on Aug. 16, 1944, in Dakota City. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. The couple farmed in the Archer area before moving to Sanborn, where he drove truck and worked road construction.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the American Legion in Hartley, Iowa, the Spencer, Iowa Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veteran. He enjoyed fishing and repairing small motors.
Survivors include his wife; four sons and their wives, Montie and Marie of Carlisle, Iowa, Mike and Patricia of Omaha, Neb., Robert and Terri and Richard and Janet, all of Sanborn; four daughters, Linda and her husband Cork Rozeboom of Sanborn, Sharon Small of Spencer, Iowa, Donna and her husband Don Olson of Sioux City and Ronda and her husband Gary Vondra of Freemont, Neb.; a son-in-law, Robert Mouw of Sheldon, Iowa; 27 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Don of Tecumseh, Okla.; and three sisters, Dorothy Farnsworth of Sheldon, Ruth Farnsworth of Sanborn and June Baker of Renton, Wash.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Mouw; a grandson, Robert Mouw; a great-granddaughter; two sister, Joyce and Violet; and a brother, Melvin.
Pallbearers will be Paul and Mike Rozeboom, Matt Schott, Scott Mouw, Aaron Olson, Cody Maranell and Chris Van Beek.
Harold Nelsen
HOMER, Neb. - Harold Nelsen, 87, of Homer died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Homer, with the Rev. Jeanne Dahl officiating. Burial will be in Omaha Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. today at the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home. Visitation will resume from 4 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church.
Mr. Nelsen was born Aug. 13, 1910, in rural Hubbard, Neb., the son of Rasus and Olga (Fredricksen) Nelsen.
He married Joyce L. Martin on July 3, 1931, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple farmed in Dakota and Thurston County until 1952. He then was employed at Farmer's Lumber and Supply and was the sexton at Omaha Valley Cemetery for many years. She died July 19, 1982, in Sioux City. He then married Bernice (Patterson) Schudt on Oct. 8, 1983, in Emerson, Neb.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and a former Mason.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Richard and Mary of Homer and Tim and Linda of Warner Robins, Ga.; a stepson and his wife, Ronald and Charlene Schudt of Washington; three daughters, Glenda and her husband Donald Potter of Pender, Neb., Janice Byroad and Sharon and her husband Keith Rose, all of Homer; a stepdaughter and her husband, Karla and Larry Daum of Emerson; three sisters, Vivian Mogensen of South Sioux City, Vera and her husband Donald Belt of Dakota City and Margaret and her husband Milford Rewinkel of Homer; 13 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-granchildren.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Brian and Shawn Nelsen, Rick Rose, Mike and Brent Byroad and Ray Potter.

DENISON, Iowa - Loren Seils, 70, of Denison died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Neb.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township. Burial will be in Crawford Height Memory Gardens at Denison. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.
Tony Tierney
MAPLETON, Iowa - Anthony Wayne Tierney, 21, of Fremont, Neb., formerly of Mapleton, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, in a hunting accident near his grandparent's farm near Mapleton.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Al McCoy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Mr. Tierney was born April 24, 1976, in Omaha, Neb., the son of Jerry L. and Sharon (Schleis) Tierney. He moved with his family to Mapleton in 1976. He attended Maple Valley School and graduated in 1995. He was employed with Flanigan Brothers during high school and was currently employed with Valmont Industries in Valley, Neb. He lived with his sister in Fremont.
Survivors include his parents of Mapleton; a sister, Christine Cook of Fremont; four brothers, Jerry Jr. and Daniel and his wife Laurie, all of Mapleton, Jeffrey and his wife Liana of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. and James of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his grandmother, Loretta C. Schleis of Mapleton; four nieces; and seven nephews.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Lawrence Schleis; and his paternal grandparents, Francis and Willisene Tierney.
Marie Woodward
LE MARS, Iowa - Marie Woodward, 97, of Le Mars died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the Rev. Leonard Waller, of Church of the Nazarene, and the Rev. Lynn Potter, of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Cemetery at Pierson, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Woodward was born June 24, 1900, in Pierson, the daughter of Ole and Alice (Petersen) Foss. She graduated from Pierson High School.
She married Leslie Woodward on Sept. 10, 1919, in Pierson. The couple lived in the Pierson and Kingsley, Iowa area until 1964, when they moved to Le Mars. He died March 29, 1970. She entered the Plymouth Manor in November 1989.
She was a member of Church of the Nazarene, where she enjoyed the church activities.
Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Dorothy and the Rev. Robert Weathers and Wanda and Donald Herbold, all of Olathe, Kan. and Lillian and Verl Kehrberg of Le Mars; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Dean, four sisters and a brother.
