Debra M. Broyhill
Debra M. Broyhill, 38, of Sioux City died Monday, 26, 1998, in Sioux City.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Berka, pastor at St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Ms. Broyhill was born April 28, 1959, in Sioux City, the dauhgter of Lawrence L. Broyhill and Carole M. (Leighty) Holtzen. She attended Sioux City schools and graduated from North High School in 1977.
She was employed with Metz Bakery in South Sioux City for 13 years. She enjoyed working with her hands.
Survivors include her father and his wife, Lawrence and Pamela Broyhill of Hemet, Calif.; her mother of Sioux City; two daughters, Heather and Sarah Crilly, both of Sioux City; five brothers, Duane Broyhill and his wife, Mary, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Raymond Broyhill and his wife, Melissa, of San Antonio, Texas, Kevin Broyhill and his wife, Lenora, of Denver, Colo., and Bud Holtzen and his wife, Christine, and Rodney Holtzen, all of Sioux City; two sisters, Ruth and Darlene Holtzen, both of Sioux City; and her paternal grandmother, Fern Broyhill of South Sioux City.
Ronald D. Dodd
Ronald D. Dodd, 76, of Lincoln, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Warren Swartz officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Dodd was a retired insurance salesman with Bankers Life of Nebraska and a public speaker.
He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, the Craftsman Lodge A.F.&A.M., the Scottish Rite of Lincoln, the York Rite Bodies of Lincoln, the Sesostris Shrine, where he was a charter member of the Sesostris Shrine Clowns, and the Elk Lodge 80 B.P.O.E. He was a former state athletics commissioner for boxing and a past patron of the Starcraft Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Ronell and Bob Nemecek of Kearney, Neb.; two grandsons, Branden and Bryson Memecek; a brother and his wife, Lowell and Connie Dodd of Crete, Neb.; four sisters-in-law, Eva and her husband, Byron Bacon, of California, LaVon and her husband, Marvin Johnson, of Verdigre, Neb., and Beulah Clyde and Maxine Spangler, both of O'Neill, Neb.; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Vernon and Bonnie Spangler of California and Clayton and Wanda Nelson of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be directed to either the Sesostris Shrine Transportation Fund or the Elks Childrens Fund.
Madelyn J. Freeman
Madelyn Joan Freeman, 3-day old daughter of Michael and Mary Freeman of Sergeant Bluff, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at the University of Nebraska Hospital in Omaha, Neb.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Larkin Morningside Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul-Louis Arts, pastor at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Madelyn was born Jan. 23, 1998, in Sioux City.
Survivors include her parents; two sisters, Stacey Lynn and Rebecca Rae; her twin brother, Jacob Michael Freeman; maternal grandparents, Larry and Joan Oehler of Coralville, Iowa; paternal grandparents, Ray and Judy Freeman of Johnston, Iowa, and Sally and Herb Munsell of Oskaloosa, Iowa; paternal great-grandfather, Phil Wake of Oskaloosa; and several aunts and uncles.
Memorials in her name may be directed to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center.
Evelyn L. Hult
Evelyn L. Hult, 78, of Weslaco, Texas, formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, in Weslaco following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. A.T. Washington officiating. Burial will be in Bluffview Cemetery at Vermillion, S.D. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hult was born July 6, 1919, in Dow City, Iowa, the daughter of Taves and Leola (Carbaugh) Brinkman.
She married Eugene G. Hult on Dec. 16, 1935, in Canton, S.D. The couple farmed in the Cartage and Vermillion, S.D., area for many years.
She was employed with Zenith Radio Corporation in Sioux City and with Newberry's Department Store in New York City.
She was a member of the Siouxland Senior Center.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Edwin of Utah; two brothers, Robert Brinkman of Spokane, Wash., and Richard Brinkman of Orem, Utah; a sister, Lois Klauzer of Willows, Calif.; five grandchildren, David and Kathy Hult and Michael, James and Donald McVay; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Leona McVay; and five brothers, Raymond, Donald, Garland, David and Steve.
Florence G. Johnson
Florence G. Johnson, 97, formerly of Sioux City died Tuesday at her residence in Lexington, Ky.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
John W. Karr Sr.
John Wilbur Karr Sr., 71, of Alamo, Texas, formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997, at his residence in Alamo.
There were no services. Burial will be in Nebraska at a later date. Skinner Silva Funeral Home of Pharr, Texas, was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Karr was born Jan. 20, 1926, in Sioux City.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He moved to Texas in 1972, from Sioux City.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Josephine Karr of Alamo; two daughters, Katherine Kitterman of Nebraska and Leslie Ann Zammit of New York; a son, John Jr. of New York; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Edward Kobes
Edward Kobes, 83, of Sioux City died Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home. Private family burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday until service time at the funeral home.
Henry LeMaster
Henry LeMaster, 82, of Lincoln, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Indian Hills Community Church in Lincoln, with the Rev. Eddie Masters officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home.
Mr. LeMasters was born in Sioux City.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a retired sales representative with Coastal Corporation.
He was a member of Indian Hills Community Church.
Survivors include his wife, Verna, of Lincoln; three daughters and their husbands, Carol and Kevin Tozier of Colorado Springs, Colo., Carlee and Gerald Anderson of Topeka, Kan., and Kathy and Larry Burt of Springfield, Mo.; two brothers and their wives, Chuck and Clarice LeMaster of Sioux City and Jack and Gladys LeMaster of Capiastrano, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Randy and Matt Woolridge, Allison Tozier, Jeff, Jared and Josh Anderson and Brianna and Emily Burt; and four great-grandchildren.
Regene L. Osborne
Regene L. Osborne, 49, of Sioux City died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Morningside Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hinton, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.
Anna M. Porter
Anna Mary Porter, 87, of Sioux City died Tuesday at Matney Westside Manor following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery at Holly Springs, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.
Muriel L. Riedesel
Muriel L. Riedesel, 100, of Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at Indian Hills Nursing Home.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at
Whitfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Kretzschmar officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Riedesel was born Oct. 11, 1897, in Dedham, Iowa, the daughter of Monroe and Laura (Quint) Byerly.
She was raised on a farm near Swan Lake in Carroll County, Iowa. She moved with her family to Carroll, Iowa in 1914, and graduated from Carroll High School in 1917.
She was employed as a pianist at silent movies with the Carroll Theater and with the medical clinic in Carroll.
She married Benjamin H. Riedesel in July 1918. The couple made their home in Carroll until 1931, when they moved to Sioux City. He died January 1969.
She was a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a pianist in the primary department for more than 20 years. She was active in all activities of the church. She was an 83-year member of the Eastern Star in Carroll.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Don W. and Eva and Paul and Lois, all of Sioux City; a daughter, Laura Smith of Sioux City; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl; a brother, John; and a son-in-law, Don Smith.
Pallbearers will be Ronald, John and Christopher Riedesel, Jason Berg, David Bogue and Rodney Lundy.
Memorials in her name may be directed to Whitfield United Methodist Church.
Lois M. Scott
Lois M. Scott, 77, of Sioux City died Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be in 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church. There will be no visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Eugene A. Sweum
Eugene A. Sweum, 86, of South Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Evangelical Church, with the Rev. Clyde Pritchett officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.
Mr. Sweum was born Sept. 8, 1911, in Sioux City, the son of Emil and Inga M. (Knutson) Sweum.
He married Lucile Steward on May 21, 1939, in Sioux City. She died May 17, 1996, in South Sioux City.
He was employed as a construction superintendent for Chris Hansen Construction Company before retiring.
He was a member of Evangelical Church, Morningside Masonic Temple 615 and the Abu-Bekr Shrine.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Mary Ann and Delmer Steele of Merrill, Iowa; a son and his wife, Louis and Jan of Yuma, Ariz.; a sister, Irene Hickey of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Howard.
Edward Van Donselaar
Edward H. Van Donselaar, 53, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Dan Doran, pastor at First Evangelical Free Church, officiating. Burial will be at a later date. There will be no visitation.
Mr. Van Donselaar was born March 7, 1944, in Sioux City, the son of Lowell P. and Elaine E. (Lindsey) Van Donselaar.
He was employed as a foreman with IBP at one time.
Survivors include his mother of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Michael and Dee of Lincoln, Neb., and Jeffrey and Deborah of Kansas City, Mo.; three daughters, Lauri Van Donselaar of Maitland, Fla., Cindy Van Donselaar of Orlando, Fla., and Jennifer Van Donselaar of Illinois; two brothers and their wives, James and Christine of Sioux City and Thomas and Pat of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Eileen P. Wingert
Eileen P. Wingert, 80, of Sioux City died Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Sherman W. Young
Sherman Walter "Bud" Young, 75, of Martinsville, Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Martinsville, with the Rev. Thomas Herndon officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Cross Creek Cemetery at Fayetteville, N.C. McKee-Stone Funeral Service of Martinsville is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Young was born July 31, 1922, of Osseo, Wis., the son of Frank Walter and Louise (Anderson) Young.
He served in the U.S Army during World War II, with the 14th Army Division, 48th Tank Division under General Patton. He also served during the Korean War.
He was employed as a manager of Layfayette Ford in Fayetteville for 20 years. He moved to High Pount, N.C., in 1975, where he was employed with Triad Lincoln-Mercury until 1993, when he retired to Martinsville.
He was president of the Military Affairs Committee and served on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce and the Methodist College and was vice president of Highland Country Club, all in Fayetteville. He was also the chairman of the Auto Show in Fayetteville. In Martinsville, he was the founder of the annual Bud Young Golf Tournament and a member of Dick Hensley Prayer Group and the Hazel's Morning Coffee Group.
Survivors include his wife, Anne (Franck) Young; two daughters, Nancy Young of Cary, N.C., and Mary Anne Young of High Point, N.C.; and three sisters, Marjorie Carter, Sarah Alice Fink and Kathleen Plummer, all of Sioux City.
Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association or Hospice of Memorial Hospital, all of Martinsville.
Benjamin J. Aldrich
WALTHILL, Neb. - Benjamin Jacob Aldrich, son of Dixie Aldrich of Walthill, was stillborn Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Winnebago, Neb. Burial will be in Omaha Indian Cemetery at Macy, Neb. Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
Aubrey Barclay
ODEBOLT, Iowa - Aubrey "Red" Barclay, 75, of Odebolt died Wednesday at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Presbyterian Church in Odebolt. Burial will be in Odebolt Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Odebolt American Legion. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday at the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Ella J. Glade
AKRON, Iowa - Ella Johanna Glade, 93, of Akron, formerly of Ocheyedan, Iowa, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at Akron Convalescent Care Center following a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan, with the Rev. Robert C. Trueblood officiating. Burial will be in Ocheyedan Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
Mrs. Glade was born Sept. 21, 1904, in Nashua, Minn., the daughter of Edward and Mary (Gielow) Bremer.
She married Erwin O. Glade on June 22, 1929, in Nashua. The couple lived in Ocheyedan until 1982, when they moved to Akron. He died Sept. 12, 1987.
She was a member of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan and was active in Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. She enjoyed playing cards.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Frederick and Carol of Hastings, Minn., and the Rev. Eugene and Pat and Joel and Carol, all of Mankato, Minn.; a daughter and her husband, Karen and Ronald Schroeder of Akron; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Gordon; three brothers, August, Clarence and Gilbert Bremer; and three sisters, Clara Kath, Minnie and Agnes Toelle.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Beth Rust, Rhonda Oetken, Robert and Thomas Schroeder, Christopher, Dana, Nathan, Aaron, Cayla and Rosa Glade, Kimberly Nelson, Cara Lane and Jenna Griebel.

LARCHWOOD, Iowa - Alma Grotewold, 84, of Larchwood died Wednesday at Fellowship Village in Inwood, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Church of Christ in Larchwood. Burial will be in Larchwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Roste Funeral Home in Larchwood.
Helen Hamilton
DENISON, Iowa - Helen Hamilton, 72, of Denison died Monday at Hampton Nursing Home in Hampton, Iowa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial will be in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Howard Mandernach
ODEBOLT, Iowa - Howard Earl John Mandernach, 88, of Odebolt died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Odebolt, with the Rev. Lanny Carlson officiating. Burial will be in Odebolt Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Mr. Mandernach was born June 24, 1909, in Clinton Township, Sac County, Iowa, the son of Albert and Lena (Hoefling) Mandernach. He was baptized at the German Reformed Church, rural Odebolt. He attended country school and Odebolt High School.
He married Louise Brucker on Dec. 6, 1934. He farmed near Odebolt. After retiring, the couple moved into Odebolt, where he continued to help on the farm.
He was a member of Odebolt United Methodist Church and served on the town council and the Odebolt Development Corporation.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Audrey and David Bettin of Odebolt and Virginia and Charles Branson of Fairfield, Calif.; three grandchildren, Jay and Tal Bettin and Dena Upson; eight great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Florence Herrig of Odebolt; a sister-in-law, Rebecca Mandernach of Odebolt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, LuAnn; an infant grandson, Chad Howard Grienke; a sister, Mildred Iversen; two brothers, Glen and Floyd; two brothers-in-law, Harry Iversen and Albert Herrig; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Mandernach.
Jim Rosendahl
SPENCER, Iowa - Jim Rosendahl, 80, of Spencer died Tuesday at his residence.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Spencer. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery at Peterson, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today, at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Goldie M. Shipley
UTE, Iowa - Goldie Mildred Shipley, 93, of Ute died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christian Church in Ute, with the Rev. Mark Smeltzer officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute.
Mrs. Shipley was born Aug. 16, 1904, near Ute, the daughter of Stephen and Ida Jane (Wheeler) Thompson. She graduated from Ute High School in 1921.
She married Floyd Shipley on July 15, 1922, in Lake View, Iowa. He died March 9, 1987.
She was employed at Manning Drug for several years and also did baby-sitting.
She was a member of Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School and was an organist, the Ladies Aid, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Federated Women's Club, the Republican Women and the Rural Mail Carriers Auxiliary. She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Hanson of Ute; three sons and their wives, Glenn and Barb of Orange, Calif., Ned and Marcia of Omaha, Neb., and Eugene and Birdie of San Jose, Calif.; a brother and his wife, Howard and Norma Thompson of Smithland, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, four brothers and a great-granddaughter.
Harry M. Yarnes
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa - Harry Marks Yarnes, 75, of Spirit Lake died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake, with the Rev. James Stiles officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.
Mr. Yarnes was born Jan. 20, 1923, in Spirit Lake, the son of Harry and Cora Yarnes. He gradauted from Spirit Lake High School.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a bomber pilot and was a prisoner of war in Germany in 1943. He returned to Spirit Lake and, with his brother-in-law, purchased his father's road construction business. He later bought out his brother-in-law, and renamed the business Yarnes Construction Company. He retired in 1980.
He married Mary Ann Wassmath 24 years ago. The couple purchased an acreage in Montevideo, Minn.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening and dogs.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Ted Yarnes of Sioux City, Todd Yarnes of Sequim, Wash., and Jeff Lewis of Falls Church, Va.; a daughter, Marcy Savage of Spirit Lake; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Verla Yager of Denver, Colo.; a brother, Dick of Whittier, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Tim Yarnes; a daughter, J.J. Bailey; his parents; two sisters, Golda and Evadne; and a brother, Gerald.
