Swen Lars Anderson
Swen Lars Anderson, 90, of Hudson, Fla., formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at
Augustana Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Michael Last officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visit ation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Mr. Anderson was born Aug. 10, 1907, near Norberg in the province of Vastmanland, Sweden, the son of Anders and Jenny Andersson.
He immigrated to Beresford, S.D., in 1926, and moved to Sioux City in 1929, where he was employed with Smith Electric. In the early 1930s he and other partners founded the Scandinavian Bakery.
He married Ruth Johnson on June 27, 1936, in Sioux City.
In the 1940s, he became a partner in Smith Electric, which became known as All Power Inc. in 1955. All Power Inc. later became known as Fabricators and Industrial Diversified Inc.
He was a co-founder of the Scandinavian Club, now known as the Scandinavian Societies.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Gary and Judy of Richmond, Va.; two daughters, Linnea Anderson of Chicago and Lisa Lines and her husband, Dennis, of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Greg Anderson and Holly Lines; a sister, Gulli Johnson of Avesta, Sweden; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be directed to Augustana Lutheran Church.
Ramona J. Burnett
Ramona J. Burnett, 93, of Waterloo, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, in Waterloo following a sudden illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Sioux City, with Elder Al Curtis and Elder David Loy officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Mrs. Burnett was born Oct. 6, 1904, in Lamoni, Iowa, the daughter of Max and Anna (Willis) Booth. She was raised in Lamoni and graduated from Graceland College in Lamoni.
She married C.E. Burnett on Feb. 13, 1925, in Lamoni. The couple lived in Conesville, Iowa, before moving to Sioux City in 1929.
She taught school in Magnolia and Conesville. She received her bachlor of arts degree from Morningside College. She then taught in Salix, Iowa, and at Washington Elementary School in Sioux City.
Mr. Burnett died Jan. 22, 1972, in Sioux City.
She was a member of Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held memberships in other church, community and educational organizations.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Milo and Marilyn of Sioux City; two daughters, Jean and her husband, Al Curtis, of Boulder, Colo., and Elaine Perry of Waterloo; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Vurl R. Judson.
Amy M. Cropley
Amy Marie (Rygh) Cropley, 95, of Seattle, Wash., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997, in Seattle.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday
at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home in Sioux City, with Dr. Kenneth Peterson, pastor of St. James United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Floyd Cemetery. Visitation will be a half hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Cropley was born Aug. 3, 1902, in Sioux City, the daughter of Daniel and Olava (Malmin) Knudson. She attended Central High School.
She married Jack O. Rygh on June 18, 1921, in Elk Point, S.D. He died in 1962 in Sioux City.
She operated the Coffee Shop at the City Hall in Sioux City in the mid 1960s.
She moved to Seattle in 1966.
She married Robert Cropley on Jan. 20, 1966, in Seattle.
She was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include her husband of Seattle; two sons and their wives, Don and Beth Rygh of Minneapolis and John and Jacquie Rygh of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Jana and Bob Rol of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother and sister.
Dannie J. Derby
Dannie J. Derby, 53, of McCook Lake died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Bruch officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., a Masonic service at 6:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Mr. Derby was born May 12, 1944, in Sioux City. He graduated from Heelan High School in 1962.
He served in the Iowa National Guard with the 113th Infantry and was called to active duty to serve in the Vietnam War.
He married Jennie Bartek on April 28, 1972, in Sioux City.
He owned and operated several business in Siouxland.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the North Riverside Masonic Lodge 662.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Cory of Jefferson, S.D.; three daughters, Amie, Emma and Patty Derby, all of McCook Lake; a brother and his wife, Raymond and Janice of Spirit Lake, Iowa; his mother, Josephine Derby of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Dannie Jr. and Jasmine Derby; and two aunts.
Pallbearers will be Dick Harper, Steve and Mike Bartek, Kevin Kirwan, Greg Dunn, Kelly Rooney, Mike Trudell and Brad Moore.
Memorials in his name may be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Mildred M. Keil
Mildred M. Keil, 86, of Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at a South Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m.
today at First Christian Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visit ation will be one hour prior to the service today at the church. Nelson-Berger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Keil was born Sept. 2, 1911, in Castana, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd and Ora (Simpson) Polly.
She married S. Gifford Keil on Aug. 14, 1938, in Canton, S.D. He died June 15, 1983.
She was employed as a music teacher with the South Sioux City Public Schools before teaching third grade at Crescent Park Elementary School. She also gave private organ and piano lessons at her home.
She was a member of First Christian Church, where she was an elder and active in Christian Women's Fellowship and the choir. She was an organist for Whitfield United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church and First Christian Church. She was a member of the Organist Guild and the Sioux City Chorus for many years. She was a volunteer at the St. Luke's Gift Shop. She enjoyed traveling and participated in Elder Hostel activities.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Priscilla and Dave Alfredson of Sioux City and Sharlene and Roger Johnson of Sergeant Bluff; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Myrtle Larson of South Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger and Vern Polly.
Pallbearers will be Ken Bolton, Robert P. Donaghu, Wayne L. Masters, Marvin Smith, Steven L. Stroh and Vernon C. Watkins.

Edwin Nelson
Edwin Nelson, 54, of Blair, Neb., formerly a Siouxland resident, died Friday in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services were held Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at the Campbell-Aman Funeral Home in Blair.
Paul W. Porepp
Paul W. Porepp, 70, of Des Moines, formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, in Fountain Hills, Ariz., of a cardiac arrest.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery at West Des Moines. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Porepp was born April 18, 1927, in Sioux City, the son of Henry William and Sophia F. (Suter) Porepp. He had lived in Sioux City for 30 years before moving to Des Moines.
He had served in the U.S. Air Force.
He was employed as a communications supervisor for U.S. West in Des Moines, retiring in 1986.
Mr. Porepp was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church and the Telephone Pioneers of America and was an Iowa Lutheran Hospital volunteer.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn M. Porepp; a daughter, Julie Bennett of Grimes, Iowa; two sons, David of Adel, Iowa, and Randall of Grimes; two sisters, Lois Pearson and Ruth Quandt, both of Sioux City; and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to Mount Olive Lutheran Church.
Kenneth Rogers II
Kenneth E. Rogers II, 46, of Sioux City died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at
Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Rasmussen officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Rogers was born May 11, 1951, in Des Moines, the son of Kenneth E. and Betty M. (Clark) Rogers.
He married Carol Roost on June 1, 1970, in South Sioux City.
He was employed as a dry wall installer with his father. He also was a country musician.
Survivors include his mother and her husband, Betty M. and Roger Yepma of Sioux City; his father of Des Moines; a son, Kenneth III of Minneapolis; three daughters, Ginger, Candace and Wendy, all of Minneapolis; six grandchildren; five brothers, Dale E. Rogers of Sioux City, Wayne Hibbs of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Elliot Hibbs of Chandler, Ariz., William Titus of Omaha and Michael Clark of Des Moines; three sisters, Connie Myers, Janice Lynn Jones and Jody Lee Pollard, all of Sioux City; three nephews; and a niece.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Beulah Webb
Beulah Webb, 102, founder and first executive director of the Siouxland Senior Center, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at Matney Westside Manor.
Services will be at 10 a.m. to day at St. Boniface Catholic Church. The Rev. Marvin J. Boes will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Webb was born Jan. 27, 1895, in Omaha, the daughter of Jackson and Nancy (Walden) Williams.
She married Charles E. Webb in June 1922. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1924. He died in December 1968.
She first became active in community affairs in 1927, when she organized the Hour of Pleasure Club, which promoted civic, cultural and educational activities and the development of a well-rounded social life.
She also was a founder of the Booker T. Washington Club and served on the board when it became the Sanford Community Center. She also served on the boards of the Mary Treglia Community House, Red Cross, YWCA and Girl Scouts. She was a charter member of the Wall Street Mission, associate director of the Sioux City USO during World War II and served as president of the Woodbury County Council on Aging.
In 1971, she was named by Iowa Gov. Robert Ray to the White House Commission on Aging and was assigned to the commission's housing committee.
She was the recipient of many honors and awards, including the Rotary Club's Service Above Self Award, the Kiwanis Club's Outstanding Citizenship Award, the Governor's Leadership Award, Briar Cliff College's Community Service Award and the Women of Excellence Award sponsored by Women Aware. She was named Iowa's Outstanding Senior Citizen at the 1974 Iowa State Fair and was inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame in August 1997.
She was a member of the Eureka Temple 314 of the Elks Lodge.
Survivors include a daughter, Leah Bryson of Sioux City; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Thelma Warner; a son-in-law, Harold Bryson; and a grandchild, Cynthia.
Memorials may be directed to
either the Senior Citizens Center or the Sandford Center.

Carl G. Ahrendt
LE MARS, Iowa - Carl G. Ahrendt, 86, of Le Mars died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church in rural Le Mars, with the Rev. Peter Boe officiating. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 8 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mr. Ahrendt was born June 26, 1911, in rural Le Mars, the son of Fredrick and Gesche (Cramer) Ahrendt. He was raised in the Grant Township area.
He married Kathryn Marienau on Dec. 12, 1934, in Grant Township. The couple farmed in Grant Township until retiring in 1984 and moving into Le Mars.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Shirley and her husband, Norman Lang, and Roxanne Ahlrich, all of Le Mars; a son, Marlowe of Le Mars; five grandchildren, Darci Athens, Gina Lang, Erin London and Troy and Cori Ahlrich; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Bennie of Le Mars; and two sisters, Marie Renken and Rieka Otto, both of Le Mars.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Henry Ahrendt; and two sister, Amanda Renken and Emma Ahrendt.
Aaliyah R. Babcock
ODEBOLT, Iowa - Aaliyah Renae Babcock, 7-month-old daughter of Laurie Babcock of Sioux City, formerly of Odebolt, died Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt. Burial will be in St. Martin's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Marie DeJager
ROCK VALLEY, Iowa - Kathryn Julia Marie DeJager, 93, of Rock Valley died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Reformed Church in Rock Valley, with the Rev. Harlan DeJong officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.
Mrs. DeJager was born Dec. 15, 1904, in Perkins, Iowa, the daughter of William and Kathryn Elizabeth (Nieuwenhof) Schouten. Her family lived at Perkins, Sioux Center, Rock Valley and Ireton, Iowa, where she graduated from Ireton High School.
She married Andrew DeJager on Jan. 2, 1925, in Luverne, Minn. The couple lived in Ireton and the Rock Valley area, where they were involved in trucking and farming. They retired and moved into Rock Valley in 1968. He died May 14, 1981. She entered the Valley Manor in Rock Valley in July 1995.
She was a member of First Reformed Church and the Ladies Aid Circle.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Vern and Josephine of Rock Valley and Andrew Jr. and Barbara of Yankton, S.D.; two daughters and their husbands, Phyllis and Clifford Van Berkum of Swea City, Iowa, and Wilma and Arthur Gerritson of Rock Valley; a sister, Esther Postma of Orange City, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Grace Schouten of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Cooper; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two brothers.
M. Helen Pearson
ALBERT CITY, Iowa - M. Helen Pearson, 87, of Albert City Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, in Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at United Methodist Church in Marathon, Iowa. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Alta, Iowa.
Henry W. Tammen
CRAIG, Iowa - Henry William Tammen, 88, of Craig died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars, Iowa.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig, with the Rev. Douglas Dowling officiating. Burial will be in St. John Evangelical Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mr. Tammen was born March 1, 1909, in Grant Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of Tony and Anna (Ludwigs) Tammen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran faith. He attended country school in Grant Township.
He married Emma Pageler on Oct. 19, 1932, in Craig. The couple farmed in Craig and Johnson townships for several years. He retired in 1968, and moved to Craig, where he worked for the town of Craig plowing snow and mowing grass until 1981. He entered Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in 1985. Mrs. Tammen died May 5, 1986.
He was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Joan and Melvin Plueger of Le Mars; a granddaughter, Laurie Schweitzberger; and two sisters-in-law, Lily Tammen of Merrill, Iowa, and Viola Tammen of Dell Rapids, S.D.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, George, Edward and Elmer Tammen; and a sister-in-law, Nora Tammen.
Pallbearers will be William Renken, Joe De Young, Larry Oltmanns, Stan Pageler, Gail Clausen and Lowell Hillrichs.
Fred Van Schepen
HULL, Iowa - Fred Van Schepen, 84, of Hull died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Hope Christian Reformed Church in Hull, with the Rev. Aldon Kuiper officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.
Mr. Van Schepen was born Jan. 7, 1913, in Ireton, Iowa, the son of Chris and Johanna (Wynia) Van Schepen. He moved with his family to Hull as a child.
He married Minnie Hubers on June 9, 1938, in Hull. The couple lived in Hull, where he operated Van's Implement for many years, retiring in 1983. He entered Pleasant Acres in December 1994.
He was a member of Hope Christian Reformed Church, where he served as an elder on the consistory. He also was a member of the Hull City Council and the Hull Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Creston "Tess" and Betty and Tim and Joy, all of Hull, and Bruce and Val of Orange City; two daughters and their husbands, Janice and Gil Blankespoor of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Marlys and Bob De Jong of Orange City; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Clarence of Columbus, Ohio, and Donald and Melvin, both of Hull; and a sister, Suzanna Vande Weerd of Rock Rapids, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Louis.
