Genevieve L. "Gen" Hanna
Genevieve L. "Gen" Hanna, 86, of Sioux City died Friday, July 10, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Evangelical Free Church with the Rev. Dan Doran officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Hanna was born Jan. 2, 1912, in White Lake, S.D., the daughter of Charles L. and Margaret B. (Hagman) Peck. She graduated from Central High School. She married James Hanna on Aug. 29, 1943, in Sioux City. She lived in Sioux City most of her life.

She worked as a dental assistant and a seamstress. She was employed for the Elks Club in the food service area and then went to work as a department manager for the Katz Drug Store. Most recently, Mrs. Hanna worked as a sales clerk at Sears.

She was a member of the First Evangelical Free Church. She enjoyed crocheting afghans and making doll clothes. She collected dolls and hats.

Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Monte and Marlis Asbra of Anaheim, Calif., and Rodney and Gatha Asbra of Eaton, Colo.; three brothers and their wives, Archie and Darlene Peck and Loren and Jean Peck, all of Sioux City,, and Roger and Leta Peck of Windsor, Colo.; two sisters and their husbands, June and Bob Young of Sioux City and Norma and Frank Johnson of Kansas City; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Peck, and a sister, Gladys Butler.

Memorials may be sent in her name to the First Evangelical Free Church.

Elaine L. Van Dyke
Elaine Louise Van Dyke, 85, of Sioux City died Friday, July 10, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home with Monsignor Frank J. Brady and the Rev. Marvin Mueller officiating. Private burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Van Dyke was born on Feb. 8, 1913, the daughter of Guy and Naomi (Terwilliger) Andrews. She graduated from Central High School and attended Milwaukee Downer College. She married John William Van Dyke on June 10, 1939, in Sioux City. He died July 1, 1981, in Sioux City.

She was a lifelong resident of Sioux City. She was on the board of the YWCA, the Mary Elizabeth Day Care Center and Crippled Children's Board. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Junior League, Questors and American Girls.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Tom and Kathy Van Dyke of Sioux City and John and Mary Van Dyke of San Francisco, and four grandchildren, Jason and Jeff Van Dyke and Bill and Jane Van Dyke.

Memorials may be sent in her name to the Big Sioux Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

Jerry Lee Borschuk
Jerry Lee Borschuk, 64, of Sioux City died Friday, July 10, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a short illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the Rev. A. T. Washington officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mr. Borschuk was born Feb. 16, 1934, in Sioux City, the son of Michael and Elizabeth (Humza) Borschuk. He graduated from Central High School in 1952 and served in the U.S. Navy in Germany.

For many years, he worked as a printer at The Sioux City Journal. For the past four years, he was employed by KCAU-TV, Channel 9. He played softball and umpired and referred softball and basketball games for many years.

Survivors include one son, Douglas of Omaha; two brothers and their wives, Michael and Lo Borschuk and Phillip and Ida Borschuk, all of Sioux City; two sisters and their husbands, Alyce and Bill Wecker and Betty and Darwin Tapper, all of Sioux City; several nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Carmen Groth of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Cornelius "C. T." Schmitt
Cornelius "C. T." Schmitt, 59, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Thursday, July 9, 1998, in Sioux City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home with the Revs. David Rockhoff and Louis Sievert officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Schmitt was born April 3, 1939, in Detroit, the son of Sylvester and Clara Schmitt. He married Ardis Grosenheider on Dec. 19, 1959, in Long Beach, Calif. He grew up in Chicago and has lived most of his adult life in Sioux City.

He worked in sales and mostly recently was employed by Bennett Vending Co.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. He served in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dan and his wife, DeAnna, Schmitt, Tim and his wife, Laura, Schmitt, and Greg Schmitt, all of Sioux City, and eight grandchildren, Tiffany, Jeremiah and Kassandra Schmitt, Taylor and Kaitlin Forsling and Truman, Ashley and Dallas Schmitt.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Florence Bennington
Florence Bennington, 98, of Sioux City died Friday at a Sioux City nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Logan Park Cemetery with the Rev. Kathy Wicks of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Eldon V. "Al" Hoelscher
Eldon V. "Al" Hoelscher, 82, of Sioux City died Saturday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

SPC Jeremy Ray Combs
SPC Jeremy Ray Combs of Sioux City died Sunday, July 5, 1998, as the result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident while stationed in Germany.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Phyllis Y. Platt
Phyllis Y. Platt of Sioux City died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sheryl Ashley officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Mrs. Platt was born in Nemaha, Iowa, the daughter of Chauncey and Maude (Marquess) Hicks. She graduated from Nemaha High School. She married Robert Platt on June 17, 1940, in Nashua, Iowa. He died Aug. 21, 1986.

Mrs. Platt was a homemaker. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son and his wife, Graig R. and Virginia, of Winnepeg, Manitoba; one daughter and her husband, Sandra and Barry Backhaus, of Sioux City; five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Dean Hicks.

Lena M. Swain
SOLDIER, Iowa - Lena M. Swain, 90, of Soldier died Friday, July 10, 1998, at a nursing home in Mapleton, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Soldier Lutheran Church with the Rev. Paul Anderson officiating. Burial will be at the Soldier Lutheran Cemetery in Soldier. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. this evening at the Pearson Funeral Home in Soldier, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.

Mrs. Swain was born May 5, 1908, in Fort Scott, Kan., the daughter of Fred and Jennie Hamlin. She attended several schools, graduating from Buena Vista College in 1929 with a double major in music and French. She taught music in Soldier for two years prior to her marriage. She married Roy Swain on June 1, 1931. They lived on a farm in Soldier most of their lives. He died in 1973.

Survivors include two sons, Terry Swain and Richard Swain, both of Soldier; four daughters, Kay and her husband, Ken Harfst, of Webster City, Iowa; Nancy Swain of Omaha; Sandra Tillson of Denver, and Kathy and her husband, Dennis Kennedy, of Council Bluffs; a daughter in law and her husband, Carol and Frank Hewitt of Sioux City; one sister and her husband, Elsie and Dr. L. D. Apperson, of DeKalb, Ill.; one brother and his wife, Dr. Richard and Joan Hamlin, of Bonita Springs, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Louise Hamlin of Mineral Pointe, Wis.; 12 grandchildren: Monty, Lonny, Jill and Bruce West; Karin, Kent and Kyle Harfst; Tanya, Tracy and Tami Tillson, and Lara and Gail Kennedy; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Gordon in infancy and Larry; a daughter-in-law, JoAnn Swain, and two brothers.

Memorials may be directed to the Soldier South Church.

Mrs. Jake (Shirley) Weber
WISNER, Neb. - Mrs. Jake (Shirley) Weber, 64, of Wisner died Friday, July 10, 1998, at a hospital in Norfolk, Neb.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church of Christ in Wisner with the Rev. Scott Evans officiating. Burial will be in the Wisner Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Kuzelka Funeral Home in Wisner and will continue Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the service at the church.

Mrs. Weber was born Sept. 15, 1933, in Winside, Neb., to James and Emma (Dinklage) Maben. She attended Wayne County Rural School District 24 and graduated as the class valedictorian from Wayne High School in 1950. She attended business school in Omaha for one year. She married Charles "Jake" Weber on Aug. 10, 1968, in Omaha.

She has lived in Wayne, Omaha, West Point and Wisner.

She has been employed at Coryell Auto Co. and Wayne Public Power in Wayne and for Peete, Marwich and Mitchell in Omaha. She had been president of Louis Dinklage Inc. since 1986.

Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Norman and Beverly Maben of Papillion, Neb., and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son in infancy.

Edwin F. Walling
ANTHON, Iowa - Edwin F. Walling, 80, of Alexander, Ark., formerly of Anthon, Iowa, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at his home in Alexander of natural causes.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with the Rev. David Hogan officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Anthon. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a vigil wake at 7 p.m. followed by the Rosary at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Mr. Walling was born Oct. 31, 1917, in Anthon, the son of Charles and Clara (Diamond) Walling. He married Priscilla Yvonne Stansberry on May 20, 1942, in Sioux City.

He worked as a foreman at Georgia Pacific Paper Mill. He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Little Rock, Ark.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, James of Des Moines, Alan of Clive, Iowa, Brian of Snellville, Ga., and Michael of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Caroyle Kmak of Wisconsin Dells, Wis., and Claudia Randall of Bryant, Ark.; two sisters, Carolyn Curtin of Anthon and Cecilla Mead of Oto; 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one son, Edwin Lloyd; three brothers, Cyril, Maurice and Beryl; one sister and one brother in infancy, and two great-grandchildren.

Phyllis Geiger
ALLEN, Neb. - Phyllis Geiger, 73, of Allen died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at a care center in Wakefield, Neb.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church of Allen with the Rev. Bill Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery in Allen. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Bressler-Humlicek Funeral Home in Wakefield.

Mrs. Geiger was born Dec. 30, 1924, in Laurel, Neb., the daughter of Ben and Floma (Langford) Dyson. She graduated from Allen High School. She married Voyl C. "Barney" Geiger Aug. 18, 1946, at Allen. The couple farmed south of Allen.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Allen. She was involved with the Women's Church Society, the Chatter-Sew Club and the Friendly Few Club.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter and her husband, Sandra and Richard Cobb of Sioux City; two sons, Jerry and his wife, Linda, Geiger of Sioux City and Charles Geiger of Wayne, Neb.; one brother and his wife, Dale and Dorothy Dyson of Fremont, Neb.; two sisters, Valliere Hubbard of Fremont and Velma Schwing of Reno, Neb.; seven grandchildren: Brian, Kevin and Mark Cobb and Aaron, Brent, Trish and Tara Geiger, and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Regina Hardy.

Edna Massey
SPENCER, Iowa - Edna Massey, 91, of Spencer died Saturday at a nursing home in Spencer.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer with the Rev. Tom Reagan officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.

Robert Mingus
DICKENS, Iowa - Robert Mingus, 73, of Dickens died Thursday at a hospital in Spencer, Iowa.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Warner Chapel in Spencer with the Rev. David Doraisingh officiating. Burial will be in Logan Township Cemetery in Gilbert Grove, Iowa. Visitation was held Saturday and will continue today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.

Elizabeth Nester
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa - Elizabeth Nester, 86, of Rock Rapids died Friday at a care center in Rock Rapids.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Apostolic Christian Church in Lester, Iowa. Burial will be in the Apostolic Christian Cemetery in Lester. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Apostolic Christian Church Fellowship Building, with the family present from 2:30 to 4 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.

Dorothy Huisenga
WALL LAKE, Iowa - Dorothy Huisenga, 81, of Wall Lake died Friday at a hospital in Lake City, Iowa.
Services will be private. The body will be cremated. There will be no visitation. A fellowship luncheon will be held in her memory at 2 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church in Denison. Huebner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edward Struble
CASTANA, Iowa - Edward Struble, 96, of Castana died Thursday at a care center in Onawa, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Castana Community Church in Castana with the Rev. Linda Boggs officiating. Burial will be in the Kennebec Cemetery in Castana. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Helen L. Hoops
HARTLEY, Iowa - Mrs. Helen L. Hoops, 81, of Hartley died Friday at a hospital in Spencer, Iowa.
