Vera E. Miller
Vera E. Miller, 80, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at her residence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Third Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. James Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Mrs. Miller was born Oct. 4, 1917, in Sioux City, the daughter of Frank and Susie (Graves) Bridges.

She married Arthur B. Miller on Oct. 31, 1936, in Sioux City. He died April 27, 1981.

She was a retired inventory clerk and purchasing agent.

She was a member of Third Presbyterian Church, the International Society of Poems and the Royal Neighbors of America Camp 6674. She was listed in Who's Who in Poetry and received the Gold and Silver Award in 1988, 1989 and 1990.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Steven C. and Judith of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Steven, Brett, Bart and Stefenie Miller; four stepgrandchildren, Deborah McGrory and Thomas, Christine and Jeffrey Donahue; a stepgreat-grandchild; and a brother and his wife, Frank and Carol Bridges of Austin, Minn.

She was preceded death by a great-grandson.

Memorials in her name may be directed to Third Presbyterian Church.

Mickey VanDeventer
Mickey M. VanDeventer, 71, of Sioux City died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
There will be no services. Private family graveside services will be Friday. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. VanDe-venter was born Sept. 12, 1926, in Superior, Neb., the daughter of Charles and Jerusha (VanHeussen) Kahley.

She married Richard L. VanDeventer on March 17, 1946, in Omaha, Neb. He died Oct. 7, 1979, in Sioux City.

She was employed with J.C. Penney from 1979 to 1983, and with Siouxland Cablecom from 1984 to 1986. She then worked at Pioneer Tele-Technology and Dialamerica Marketing, retiring in 1995.

She had been active in the Republican Party for many years.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Rick and Nancy of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Ronnie and Suzanne of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Kaley and Bill Donnelly of Mukilteo, Wash.; a brother and his wife, Col. (ret.) Donald and Nadine Kahley of Las Vegas; a sister, Jan Calame of Omaha, Neb.; and 12 grandchildren, Michael, Jennifer, Kimberly, Cynthia, Kristine, Pamela, Rachel, April, Thomas, Audrey and Zachary VanDeventer and Amanda Donnelly.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Lt. Col. Thomas Kahley; and a sister-in-law, Audrey Kahley.

Glory A. Fletcher
Glory A. Fletcher, 65, of South Sioux City, formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, July 13, 1998, at the Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Episco-pal Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. W. Verdery Kerr officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Robert Rassmussen, pastor of The Church On The Way, all at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Fletcher was born Feb. 20, 1933, in Sioux City, the daughter of Archie and Isabel (Coburn) Jackson. She was a long-time Sioux City resident.

She married Michael F.D. Miller in 1951, in Sioux City. She later married Thomas C. Fletcher in 1961, in Las Vegas.

She was employed as a hostess for many years at Archie's Waeside (founded by her father) in Le Mars, Iowa. She then worked as a home health aide for St. Luke's Regional Medical Center from 1987 to 1995.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Nancy and Mike Mitchell of Sioux City; her mother, Isabel Brant of South Sioux City; a brother, Timothy E. Lester of Sioux City; four sisters, Valerie L. Rand of Le Mars, Sharon R. Strohm of Castana, Iowa, Carol Sue and her husband, Edward Holdcroft, of Kingsley, Iowa, and Rhoda J. LaScala of Sioux City; two half sisters, Pigeon and her husband, Dan Heuertz, of Le Mars and Marilyn Jackson of Edina, Minn.; four grandchildren, Kory L., Kristian M., Casey J. and Carrie A. Mitchell; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Pallbearers will be Kim Frazier, Bob Rand, Jim Luense, Mike, Kory, Kristine and Casey Mitchell and Alan Luense.

Memorials in her name may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.

Rosie Bales
Rosie Bales, 71, of Sioux City died Tuesday at her residence following a brief illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Dorthy L. Carter
Dorthy Lucille Carter, 71, of Sioux City died Monday, July 13, 1998, in Sioux City.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John Hagberg officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8:30 p.m. today at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Mrs. Carter was born June 8, 1927, in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Henry Frank and Julia Agnes (Patterson) Gaede. She moved with her family to Waterloo, Iowa, where she attended school.

She married William Carter on Nov. 23, 1946, in Waterloo. The couple moved to Peoria, Ill., then to Charles City, Iowa. In 1967 they moved to Sioux City.

She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and the Parent Teacher Association. She taught Sunday School and was a confirmation instructor with her church, and a Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed sewing, crafts and gardening.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Pat Barrett of Lawrenceville, Ga., and JoLaine and Steve Noreen and JoAnne and Wayne Steckelberg, all of Sioux City; two sisters and their husbands, Norma and Frances Olmstead of Waterloo and Darlis and William Whitaker of Evansdale, Iowa; two brothers and their wives, Vern and Dorothy Gaede of Waterloo and Darrell and Barbara Gaede of Evansdale; and four grandchildren, Bryan and Bryce Noreen and Mindy and Todd Steckelberg.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Myron and Warren Gaede; and a sister, Thelma Youngblut.

Pallbearers will be Jack Dalke, Conrad Erickson, Deane Gisel, Todd Steckelberg and Bryan and Bryce Noreen.

Memorials may be directed to St. Mark Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.

John G. Rickwa

John G. Rickwa, 55, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, died of cancer Saturday, July 11, 1998, in Omaha.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Martha Anderson, of Rustin Avenue United Methodist Church, officiating. There will be no visitation.

Mr. Rickwa was born Sept. 26, 1942, in Sioux City, the son of Tony F. and Joyce L. (Rowley) Rickwa. He graduated from East High School in 1961.

He entered the U.S. Navy and served in Vietnam aboard the USS Midway, retiring in 1981. His awards and decorations include National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Battle "E" Award, Navy Expeditionary Medal, three Good Conduct Awards, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with the FMF device, Navy Unit Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Gallantry Cross, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Civil Actions, Meritorious Unit Commendation and Presidential Unit Citation.

He returned to San Diego, Calif., and was employed at the Veterans Hospital. He later moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., and worked at the Veterans Hospital and then the Veterans Hospital in Omaha, retiring in 1995.

Survivors include his parents of Sioux City; two sisters and their husbands, Stella and Gary Switzer and JoAnn and Mike Wilcox, all of Sioux City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth MacTavish Minor
Ruth Marie MacTavish Minor, 81, of Sioux City died Monday at a South Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at noon Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Margie M. Veach, 77, of Sioux City died Tuesday; Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Donna R. Ferris, 67, of Sioux City died Tuesday; Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home.

Jeanette M. Smit, 88, of Sioux City died Tuesday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Delbert K. Schwien
PRIMGHAR, Iowa - Delbert K. Schwien, 69, of Primghar died Monday, July 13, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at American Reformed Church in Primghar, with the Rev. Mark Volkers officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Hartley, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post of Hartley. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 9 p.m., at the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Primghar.

Mr. Schwien was born Dec. 7, 1928, in Primghar, the son of Charles and Laura (Trojahn) Schwien.

He attended country school and moved with his family into Hartley in 1941. He graduated from Hartley High School in 1947.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953.

He married Margaret Foley on June 11, 1955, in Sanborn, Iowa. The couple made their home in Hartley, where he owned and operated the Uptown Dairy, both in Hartley and Primghar. He later joined Wells Blue Bunny until 1980. She died June 11, 1982, in Sioux City.

He then worked for Farmers Co-op Elevator, the city of Hartley and as a custodian of the Hartley-Melvin High School in Hartley, retiring in December 1990.

He married Gloria DeKok on July 10, 1987, in Primghar. The couple made their home on a farm near Primghar, until moving into Primghar in February 1993.

He was a member of American Reformed Church, Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club and the American Legion of Hartley. He was a charter member of the Hartley Lions Club and a former member of the Hartley Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and training dogs.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Michael and Charlene of Hartley; a daughter, Lynelle Schwien of Rock Valley, Iowa; five stepsons and their wives, Jeffrey and Jean Anliker of Bowie, Md., Kenneth and Jeri Jae DeKok of Kearney, Neb., Jay and Juanita Anliker of Primghar, Ronald and Sherri DeKok of Le Mars, Iowa, and Roger and Karen DeKok of Owatonna, Minn.; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Glenda and Dean Parrish of Cherokee, Iowa, and Jo Lynn and William Jackes of Le Mars; two grandchildren; 17 stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Elmer of Mountain View, Mo.; and two sisters, Viola Smith of Pebble Beach, Calif., and Leona Mathisen of Salinas, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Henry, Harold and Melvin.

Brandon M. Schau
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Brandon Michael Schau, 17, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of Ida Grove, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Ida Grove Horn Memorial Hospital of injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Ida County.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, with the Rev. Michael Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will be in Oak Shade Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Murdoch Funeral Home in Marion. Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.

Brandon was born June 24, 1981, in Ida Grove, the son of Michael and Beth (Ludwig) Schau.

He was a junior at Marion High School, where he participated in basketball, studyed journalism and worked on the school newspaper and yearbook. He was employed with Fareway and Menards.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was active in DARE and TATOO.

Survivors include his mother, Beth, and her fiance, Ron Kleinmeyer; three brothers, Cole, Zeth and Kyle, all at home; his father and his special friend, Michael and Judy Clark of Ida Grove; two half sisters, Meagan Patnode and Jordan Schau; a half brother, Jeremy Schau; grandparents, Mary Jean Ludwig of Indianola, Iowa, Paula Schau of Ida Grove and Herb and LuVerna Kleinmeyer of Williamsburg, Iowa; and great-grandparents, Henry and Viola Schau of Ida Grove.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Michael Ludwig and Marlyn Schau.

Memorials in his name may be directed to Marion High School.

LINN GROVE, Iowa - Arthadale Zieman, 77, of Linn Grove died Tuesday at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Royal, Iowa. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Peterson, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.

SPENCER, Iowa - George Kenneth Sperry, 91, of Spencer died Monday at Northshire Residence in Spencer.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines. There will be no vistation. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of the arrangements.

William H. Holtgrew
WINSIDE, Neb. - William H. "Bill" Holtgrew, 72, of Winside died Monday at his residence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Winside. Burial will be in Pleasantview Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at Schumacher Funeral Home in Winside.

QUIMBY, Iowa - William R. "Bill" Clark, 46, of Spencer, Iowa, formerly of Quimby, died Monday at Spencer Municipal Hospital of complications following surgery.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, with a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Burial will be in Quimby Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Urban M. Lease
GALVA, Iowa - Urban Morey Lease, 91, of Worthington, Minn., died Monday at Worthington Regional Hospital.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Galva Methodist Church. Burial will be in Galva Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Benson Funeral Home of Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
