Margie M. Veach
Margie May Veach, 77, of Sioux City died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Leo Kostizen and the Rev. George Zehnder officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.
Mrs. Veach was born May 5, 1921, in Sioux City, the daughter of Omer Foster and Tillie (Frank) Foster-Reed. She graduated from East High School in 1939.
She married Austin H. Veach on June 3, 1939, in Sioux City. He died February 1975. She was employed with Lutheran and Methodist Hospitals in Sioux City, the Hawkeye Club and as the program coordinator and choir director for the Siouxland Senior Center for over 15 years.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where she was the choir director, Sunday School teacher and active in the womens circles, Quota Club, Sweet Adelines, Sioux City Treble Cleff, Sioux City Women's Chorus, and the Sioux City Symphony
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy and her husband, Perry Bochmann, of Sioux City, and Norma Amundsen of Minneapolis, Minn.; a son and his wife, Richard A. and Clara J. of Omaha, Neb.; a brother, Robert Reed of Omaha; a sister, Merlene Powers of Kansas City, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers will be Tim, Joel and Nathan Veach, Luke Bochmann, Andrew Amundsen and Matt Reed.
Charity R. Cain
Charity Rae Cain, 21, of Chicago, formerly of South Sioux City, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 14, 1998, in Chicago.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Dale Jirousek officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Walthill, Neb. Visitation will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 8 p.m., at the church. Becker-Hunt Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Ms. Cain was born March 2, 1977, in Sioux City, the daughter of John A. and Sheila R. (Rensch) Cain. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended school in Walthill and South Sioux City. She moved to Milwaukee, Wis., and recently moved to Chicago.
Survivors include her father and stepmother, John and Michelle Cain of South Sioux City; her mother, Sheila Alexopoulos of Milwaukee; a brother, Cody Cain of South Sioux City; a sister, Christina Alexopoulos of Athens, Greece; two stepbrothers, Mason and Michael Barnett, both of South Sioux City; a stepsister, Meagon Barnett of South Sioux City; grandparents, Lloyd and Joy Davis of South Sioux City, Betty and Ray Pence of Sioux City, and William M. Rensch of Rapid City, S.D.; a great-grandmother, Bernice Sweisberger of South Sioux City; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Dustin Davis, Derek Frese, Travis and Troy Potts, Donald Stand and Nick Pearson.
Jeanette M. Smit
Jeanette M. Smit, 88, of Sioux City died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert Condon officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary service, all at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Miss Smit was born June 10, 1910, in Buffalo, N.Y., the daughter of Gerritt and Jeanette (McCann) Smit. She moved with her family to Sioux City. She attended St. Boniface Grade School and graduated from Central High School and Iowa State University.
She was employed with Conservation Bond and Mortgage and then as a loan secretary for Home Federal Savings and Loan.
She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church.
Survivors inlcude two nephews and their wives, Jan and Teresa Smit of Colfax, Wis., and Steve and Rose Smit of Collierville, Tenn.; and six grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by a twin sister, Jean; and a brother, Gerald.
Pallbearers will be her grandnieces and grandnephews, Jennifer, Jean, Maria, Gregory, Adam and Timothy Smit.
Herbert B. Poe
Herbert Berne Poe, 72, of Banning, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Kaiser Fountain Hospital in Riverside, Calif.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Weaver Mortuary Chapel in Beaumont, Calif. Private family burial services will be at a later date.
Mr. Poe was born March 22, 1926, in Omaha, Neb. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was employed as a salesman with Continental Baking Co. for 42 years. He had lived in Fountain Valley, Calif., before moving to Banning nine years ago.
He was a member of United Methodist Church, Banning, Masonic Tyrian Lodge 508, Sioux City, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, S.J., U.S.A. and Al Malaikah Shrine Temple, Los Angeles.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth E. Poe; a son, Jeff L. of Port Orchard, Wash.; three daughters, Gail J. Harmon and Janet A. Vrdenburgh, both of Long Beach, Calif., and Susan C. Peterson of Fairfax, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to Shriners Hospital for Children in Los Angeles.
Bernard W. Mercer
Bernard W. Mercer, 81, of Sioux City died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Larkin Northside Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kathryn H. Wicks, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Private family graveside services will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Mr. Mercer was born July 31, 1916, in Chelsea, Iowa, the son of Glen and Agnes (Anderly) Mercer. He graduated from Chelsea High School. He was a co-owner of a grocery store in Chelsea.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the South Pacific. Following his discharge, he moved to Sioux City.
He married Gladys Stoewer on Oct. 17, 1943, in Sioux Falls, S.D. He was employed in construction with Holtze Construction Co. and later as a building supervisor for James M. Duffy, Architect. After his retirement, the couple moved to Wahpeton, Iowa, and recently returned to Sioux City.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Sioux City and St. Joseph Catholic Church, Milford, Iowa. He was also a member of Carpenter's Union and American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Bernita and Glenn Mannes of Yankton, S.D., and Vicki and Rick Wollman of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Brent and Sarah Mannes and Jason Wollman; and a sister and her husband, Kathleen and Ray Harden of Tama, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Lyle.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
Marvin Monk, 71, of Sioux City died Thursday; Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Bette J. Holland
LE MARS, Iowa - Bette Jean (Wick) Holland, 75, of Cleghorn, Iowa, formerly of Le Mars, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at her residence.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Methodist Church in Le Mars. Private family burial services will be at a later date.
Mrs. Holland was born Nov. 15, 1922, in Sioux City, the daughter of Robert and Helen Wick. She lived with her family in Tyndall, S.D., for 14 to 15 years, before moving with her family to Le Mars. She graduated from high school in Le Mars and attended one year of college. She served in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator aboard blimps on the west coast during World War II. Following her discharge, she returned to Western Union College in Le Mars, graduating in 1947.
She married Bailus "Dutch" Holland on Oct. 2, 1946. She taught school in the Remsen-Union school district for many years and worked for many years at Nemmers Plumbing. The couple supervised the Willow Creek campground in Le Mars for many years. They wintered in Scottsdale, Ariz., for 22 years.
She was a member of Cleghorn Presbyterian Church and Glass and Garden in Scottsdale. She was also a member of Order of the Eastern Star. She was active in the church and enjoyed camping, playing cards and bingo.
Survivors include her husband; four daughters and their husbands, Bonny Jean and Kiyo Yamashita of Japan, Barbara Jo and Kevin Kuhnes of Cleghorn, Bobette Joann and Keizo Yamada of Le Mars, and Beverly Jane and Yanko Zecevic of Valdez, Alaska; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Barbara and Ray Korff of Le Mars; two aunts; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Bonny Hammer; two brothers-in-law, Richard Hammer and Paul Holland; and a niece.
Marjorie Agar
SIBLEY, Iowa - Marjorie Agar, 62, of Sibley died Wednesday at the Country View Manor in Sibley.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Sibley. Burial will be in Holman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Walton, Roste and Vogel Funeral Home in Sibley.
W. James Eriksen
HUBBARD, Neb. - W. James Eriksen, 74, of Hubbard died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, in Pappillion, Neb., following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Jeanne Dahl, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hubbard, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 1 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Eriksen was born Oct. 31, 1923, in Jackson, Neb., the son of Victor and Essie (Francisco) Eriksen. He graduated from Hubbard High School.
He married Elsie R. Dempsey on June 9, 1943, in Ponca, Neb. She died May 19, 1994, in Sioux City. He was a long time businessman, owner and operator in Hubbard.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Nebraska State and Dakota County Democratic Party and a former board member of Atokad Park. He enjoyed fishing and horse racing.
Survivors include four sons, Jim and his wife, Judy, of Yuma, Ariz., Darrell and his wife, Genene, of Omaha, Neb., Ron and his wife, Trish, of Yuma and Tracy of Omaha; three daughters, Sally Morgan and her special friend, Bob Mycka, of Dakota Dunes, Connie and her husband, Rob Lamp, of Pappillion and Gayle and her husband, Steve Carper, of Lincoln, Neb.; two brothers and their wives, Charles and Norma of Hubbard and Ralph and Dorothy of Jackson; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leo and Francis; and a sister, Iva Todd.
Pallbearers will be Brent, Doug, Terry and Gary Eriksen, Mike Morgan, Rick Nearman and Travis Norris.
Carl G. Jaeschke
HINTON, Iowa - Carl G. Jaeschke, 64, of Hinton died of cancer Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at a Sergeant Bluff nursing home.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with Sister Maryls Becker, chaplain at Marian Health Center, officiating. The body was donated to the Nebraska Anatomical Board. There will be no visitation.
Mr. Jaeschke was born Sept. 7, 1933, in Reading Township, Lohrville, Iowa, the son of August and Helen (Fromm) Jaeschke. He graduated from Lohrville High School.
He married Ursula Ashcraft on Aug. 5, 1989, in Sioux City. He moved from Manson, Iowa to Hinton in 1989. He was employed as an engineer with Illinois Central Railroad for 42 years.
He was a member of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Division 114. He enjoyed hunting, traveling in Germany and studying German history.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ronnie and his wife, Sharon, of Summer, Iowa, and Alan of Fort Dodge, Iowa; three daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Kim Kolesar of Fort Dodge, Leisa and Jerry Bailey of Manhatten, Kan., and Colleen and Pat Harrington of Pomeroy, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Kelly Anbach of Bensenville, Ill.; two sisters, Berniece Nowack of Pocahontas, Iowa, and Frieda Burkett of Canby, Ore.; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

DENISON, Iowa - Vicki Jo Anderson, 46, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Denison, died Wednesday.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Denison Baptist Church. There will be no visitation. Huebner Funeral Home of Denison is in charge of the arrangements.

WALTHILL, Iowa - Helen Morgan, 76, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Walthill, died Wednesday at the Florence Heights Nursing Center in Omaha.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Winnebago, Neb. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Walthill. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. today, with a rosary at 7 p.m., at the Winnebago Tribal Mortuary. Winnebago Wake and Burial Program is in charge of the arrangements.

SCHALLER, Iowa - Marian E. Ehrp, 80, of Schaller died Wednesday at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center in Odebolt, Iowa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Barker Funeral Home in Alta, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Storm Lake, Iowa. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
