Helen J. Stowers
Helen J. Stowers, 92, of Sioux City died Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

LaVena K. Wendehl
LaVena K. "Dee" Wendehl, 68, of Sioux City died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at her residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert J. Schimmer officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. and a Legion of Mary rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mrs. Wendehl was born Sept. 17, 1929, in Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of Henry P. and Josephine K. (Munsch) Bauerly. She graduated from Leeds High School in 1947.

She married Alfred Edwin Wendehl on Nov. 1, 1947, in Elk Point, S.D. He died Jan. 4, 1974, in Sioux City.

The couple owned and operated Al & Dee's, near St. Vincent's Hospital. Then they operated Al & Dee's Midway Bar, on W. 7th St., for 19 years. In 1982, she worked for the Sioux City School System, retiring in 1993.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and was a volunteer for Lutheran Social Services and the Senior Help Mate program.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Steven and Sandy of Des Moines; three daughters, Sandra and her husband, Eugene Sullivan, of Omaha, Neb., Shelia and her husband, Russell Stusse, of Pierce, Neb., and Sue Copeland of South Sioux City; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Arnold of Castro Valley, Calif., and Melvin of Sioux City; and two sisters, Shirley Bruns of Marysville, Wash., and Lorretta Von Tersch of Elm Springs, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, a sister and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Kayla Copeland, Ryan, Shannon and Korey Stusse, Jessica and Joshua Sullivan, Zachary, Alexander and Lauren Wendehl.

Memorials in her name may be directed to Siouxland Regional Cancer Center and Hospice of Siouxland.

Margaret S. Brennan
Margaret S. Brennan, 90, of Monmouth, Ill., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, July 23, 1998, at the Community Medical Center in Monmouth.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Immacualte Conception Catholic Church in Monmouth, with the Rev. Ron Enderlin officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be after noon today, with the family present 7 ot 8 p.m., at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Brennan was born June 18, 1908, in Sioux City, the daughter of Owen and Molly Smith. She was raised in Sioux City, graduating from Cathedral High School. She married Michael J. Brennan.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Michael and Florence of Monmouth; five grandchildren, Kevin, Mike and Francis Brennan, Diane Germann and Cathy Brennan-Betar; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas; a great-granddaughter; and two sisters.

Memorials may be directed to Immaculate Conception School in Monmouth.

Roman J. Noecker
HARTINGTON, Neb. - Roman J. Noecker, 81, of Hartington died Thursday at the Hartington Nursing Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington. Burial will be in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Bow Valley, Neb. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a rosary at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 8 p.m., at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.

Frank J. Bernard
ANTHON, Iowa - Francis Joseph Bernard, 82, of Anthon died Monday, July 20, 1998, at the Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center at Kingsley, Iowa.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with the Rev. David Hogan officiating. Burial will be in Mount St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion McNiff Post 389 of Anthon. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 7 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Mr. Bernard was born March 31, 1916, near Anthon, the son of James and Josephine (Umhoeffer) Bernard. He was raised in the Anthon area and attended St. Joseph Catholic School, graduating from Anthon Public High School in 1934. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, for two years.

He farmed on the family farm, until entering the Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center in March 1998.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and American Legion McNiff Post 389. He enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include two sisters, Mildred M. and her husband, David Macken, of Rochester, Minn., and Joan Barnes of Hot Springs, Ark.; a sister-in-law, Marguerite Bernard of Anthon; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters.

Norman Schroeder
ODEBOLT, Iowa - Norman Schroeder, 72, of Odebolt died Thursday, July 23, 1998, at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt. Burial will be in Odebolt City Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt.

Mr. Schroeder was born Feb. 18, 1926, near Arcadia, Iowa, the son of Frank and Louise (Aschinger) Schroeder. He attended St. Martin's Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Odebolt High School in 1944.

He married Ardis Elaine Stehr on Oct. 1, 1947, in Odebolt. The couple farmed near Odebolt until October 1979, when they moved into Odebolt. She died Feb. 7, 1997.

He was a member of St. Martin's Catholic Church. He enjoyed sports and raising and training quarterhorses.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Kent and Kim and Rick and Kris, all of Odebolt; five daughters and their husbands, Sheryl and Gene Diersen and Joan and Larry Hoagland, all of Odebolt, Susan and Allan Erickson of Omaha, Neb., Jane and Fred Johnson of Mapleton, Iowa, and Lori and Jim Mostek of Washington, Iowa; 24 grandchildren, Tamra, Thad and Ryan Diersen, Jamie and Andrew Erickson, Thane, Dena, Holly, Cade, Sari and Jacey Johnson, Scott and Todd Hoagland, Kyle, Keith, Korey, Seth, Katie, Kara, Tyler and Kallie Schroeder, and Kelly, Kathy and Robert Mostek; three brothers and their wives, H.F. "Gus" and Lillian and Clayton and Mary, all of Wall Lake, Iowa, and Darrell "Speed" and Thelma of Odebolt; and two sisters, Nona Mae O'Connor of Sac City, Iowa, and Marge and her husband, Dale Albrecht, of Wall Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Tina L. McDermott
OTO, Iowa - Tina Lea McDermott, 40, of Oto died of multiple sclerosis Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at the Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto, with the Rev. Edmund Tiedeman officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, Iowa.

Ms. McDermott was born Sept. 25, 1957, in Sioux City, the daughter of Thomas L. and Ila (Lillie) McDermott. She was raised in Oto and graduated from Anthon-Oto High School in 1975.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary Henry McKenna Post 651 of Oto.

Survivors include two children, Pete and Maggie McDermott of Oto; her parents of Oto; a sister and her husband, Susie and Larry Douglas of Oto; three brothers, Tony and his wife, Gabby, of Sioux City, Joseph and Cinda Kruse of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., and Patrick and his wife, Debbie, of Mankato, Minn.;her maternal grandmother, Rozella "Babe" Lillie of Oto; three nieces; and four nephews.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Leo and Loretta McDermott; and her maternal grandfather, Harold Lillie.

Carolyn L. Gardert
IRETON, Iowa - Carolyn L. Gradert, 55, of Ireton died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ireton, with the Rev. John Doolittle officiating. Burial will be in Peace Lutheran Cemetery, rural Sioux Center, Iowa. Visitation will be noon to 5 p.m. today at Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Ireton. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. today at the church.

Mrs. Gardert was born March 18, 1943, in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Donald Larkin and Evelyn Pauline (McGinty) Warner. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and graduated from East High School in Sioux City.

She married Richard Gardert on March 3, 1963, in Pipestone, Minn. The couple farmed in the Ireton area. He died Oct. 6, 1993.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Richard Jr. and Autumn and Jody and Linda, all of Ireton; a daughter, Crystal Renee Gradert of Rock Valley, Iowa; her mother of Redfield, Iowa; three brothers, Gary Warner of Cottage Grove, Minn., Eugene Warner and Donald Larkin Warner Jr., both of McCook Lake, S.D.; two sisters, Helen Dickson of Redfield and Barbara Norman of Landers, Wyo.; and two grandchildren, Richard III and Cheyenne.

She was preceded in death by her father; and three brothers, Richard Donald, Steven James and Robert Lee Warner.

Edna L. Prior
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Edna Lorraine (Boughton) Prior, 91, of Ida Grove died Tuesday at the Morningside Rehab and Care Center in Ida Grove.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. Burial will be in Ida Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Charles "Chuck" Porter, 62, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Thursday; Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Odebolt.
